Day 34: Nonsense

Nonsense. It was a word Luna had heard all her life. A word tossed at her scathingly by fellow students and impatiently by teachers. A word countless critics had used to describe the articles her father wrote.

Most of the time, Luna didn't let the sneers bother her. If anything, she felt sorry for those who were so close-minded they couldn't imagine anything they hadn't seen for themselves. Still, she did wish she could find at least one person besides her father who didn't roll their eyes when she mentioned nargles or crumple-horned snorcacks.

She was sitting in the lobby of St. Mungos, waiting for her father -who was being treated for an injury he had received on their latest quest to find the crumple horned snorcack- and reading the latest addition of the Quibbler, when a voice spoke up from nearby in a jeering tone she was well used to, "The Quibbler? Why would you read such nonsense?"

Luna looked up with a frown, but before she could say anything, another voice broke in, "I don't think it's nonsense."

She turned toward the new voice to find a young man a few years older than herself smiling at her, "Just because we don't have hard evidence of something doesn't mean it doesn't exist," he continued, "Who knows how many creatures there are in the world that we haven't discovered yet? We discover new species all the time."

Luna smiled at him, "Yes, that's exactly what most people don't seem to understand."

Before she could say anything more, the rude wizard who had first jeered at her magazine spoke up again, scowling at the other man, "You really believe there's a crumply-horn snortack out there somewhere?" he asked dubiously.

"Crumple-horned snorcack," Luna corrected with a slight smile.

"I believe it's possible," the other wizard answered calmly, "Like I said, there's still a lot out there we haven't discovered yet."

The rude wizard sniffed, "Well, what do you know about it anyway?"

"I'm a magizoologist, so more than you, I would imagine," The answer was given calmly, with a slight smile. Then, apparently deciding the conversation was quite over, the magizoologist turned back to Luna and gave her a smile, "I'm Rolf. Rolf Scamander."

"Luna Lovegood," she responded, "I think you were a few years ahead of me at Hogwarts."

Rolf nodded, "I was. Anyway, I'm sorry that man was so rude to you."

Luna smiled, "Oh, it doesn't bother me. That's how most people react, you know. They all think it's nonsense."

"Well, not me," Rolf echoed his earlier words.

"No, not you," Luna smiled dreamily; she rather liked this Rolf Scamander, "You're different."

Rolf grinned back at her, "You're different too. I like different."

Luna's kind a hard character to write, but I love her. As always, I appreciate any and all reviews.
