Chapter 29
(Air Force Base) 8 months later
"So Sally, did you win the bet?" Relena asked amused as she lay on a hospital bed in the med wing of the base. Her belly very visible as she sat up facing Sally's direction. "I always win…" Sally replied typing away on the ultrasound machine keys. "You knew it was a boy Sally, how did Duo take his loss? Relena asked. "He's still adamant that it's a girl. He doesn't take losing quite lightly. Hilde had betted that it was a boy only to against Duo's choice. Heero on the other hand said it was a girl. You should have seen his reaction when that balloon popped blue powder. It was completely priceless!" Sally continued as she squinted her eyes on the screen. Relena softly hummed to herself as she listened to the heartbeat of her son. "It's almost time to meet you..." she said quietly rubbing her belly.
"Well everything looks good Relena. Just waiting on him now to make his big entrance." Sally said helping Relena up from the bed preparing to leave. "Heero must be excited." Sally said as she ushered Relena out onto the med wing hallway. "Once our son is born into this world, Heero would have another life to protect. Most especially his son. What scares me is that so much has transpired within a year. Heero will have his hands full with me and our baby boy." Relena said placing a hand on the top of her belly. "Well Dr. Yuy, Heero has only known one thing and that is war. His mindset has always been battle and triumph. You coming into his life balanced everything. Making him more human Relena. He's the captain of the most elite squadron, you've still got a lot to know about him." Sally said putting an arm around Relena's shoulder. "Dr. Yuy, Huh? I guess that name still has sink in. I can't begin to explain how happy we are. I just can't help fight the feeling that something bad is headed our way." Relena said reaching the elevator. Sally gave her a brief smile. Somewhat of an assurance that all is well.
Pressing the down button Relena waited until the doors opened. As they did she was surprised to see her husband in his flight suit. "Everything okay?" Heero asked as Sally and Relena entered. He immediately held his wife's hand in his. "Baby is doing well. We are just waiting for him now." Relena replied. The elevator doors opened slowly and they exited to make their way onto the parking lot. They bid Sally goodbye as they reached their car. "Relena, I have some things to take care of. I'll meet you later at home." Heero said softly as he ushered his wife to the driver's seat. "Is everything alright Heero? Has something happened?" Relena asked worriedly. "Don't worry about anything. Everything is okay. I'll call as soon as I'm headed home. Drive safe." Heero said as he kissed his wife on the forehead. Nodding her head slowly, Relena smiled at him sweetly and slowly left the parking lot to head home. Heero watched as his wife drive away. As soon as she was no longer in view he turned around with an angry look amongst his facial features. His brow furrowed and frown on his face as he headed to the command center in a hastily manner.
"Doctor Yuy went home?" Sally asked with arms folded. Heero just gave a brief nod and they headed to the command center together. As they made their way down the halls, Heero anticipated on what reports would be given once they made it through the metal doors. He was given a tip two months ago that the mastermind in the attack almost nine months ago was to strike again. Should that person strike any time soon, Relena would be in danger as well as their son. He kept thinking of ways to keep Relena in the dark. He didn't want to deceiver her, he knew that she trusted him completely. Now was just not the time to tell her, but eventually he would. As they entered, Sally headed to speak with lieutenant colonel Une. He made his way to his squadron whom were waiting for him patiently. He took a seat next Duo. No words were said. They just waited.
(New Port City) Heero & Relena's home
As Relena parked her car in the garage she hesitated in getting off. Something kept tugging at her heart that something was wrong. A few minutes had passed and she shook her head slowly. 'I'm sure it's nothing. If there was something wrong Heero would have told me.' She said to herself. Grabbing her bag Relena went inside her home and began to prepare for dinner. After changing into more comfortable clothing, Relena made her way into the kitchen. Bending forward slightly she opened the cabinet door ease. A sudden dull pain on her lower back caused her to pause and stand straight. She inhaled and exhaled sharply. Finding the closest chair to her she sat down hoping the pain would somehow go away. Relena didn't realize how long she had been sitting down. 'Maybe, we can order take out instead. Heero loves Japanese food. I'll take a little break, I don't think I should be moving around so much.' She thought to herself and headed back upstairs to retrieve her phone and place an order. 'Now where did I put my bag?' she asked herself brushing off the idling pain on her back. Finding it had fallen off her small chaise in her walk in closet. Relena aimed at picking up her bag when a strange heavy feeling came over her. She dropped to her knees and blinked a few times. Her vision becoming more and more impaired. With whatever strength she had, her attempt to get her bag to call for help failed. '"Heero…" she whispers. She suddenly began to fall slowly to her right side, her eyes clouding dark as she finally collapses on her soft carpet floor.
(Air Force Base)
Heero sat with his complete focus on the monitor before him. An interview with Sergeant Mills had Heero dripping the edge of his chair. He wanted to torture the man being interrogated for answers about the attack, the torture of an agent and what his head of command had in store for them. Mills had stared at his interrogators with a cynical smile displayed on his face. "Do you honestly think I would give up my commander's location? I knew all your plans as I sat in the same command center with those doctors and scientists. There will be no negotiation. You will only get one great message from Commander Treize. 'I will meet Captain Heero Yuy on the battlefield soon, he shall bring his beautiful doctor with him. She is after all his downfall.' Mills had quoted. "Captain Yuy is a significant pilot, granted he will have jealous competitors. What does Dr. Peacecraft have to do with your commander's plans?" asked Rhodes the lead investigator. Facing the man across from him brought a chilling atmosphere. "I heard she married the captain. He has no clue what's headed their way. Gundam Squadron will meet their match as well. Be on the look out, it maybe tomorrow or next year. We'll surprise you. He's waiting patiently to tear you all apart!" Mills screams and he begins to laugh. "You will face the judge and you'll be charged from your crimes. You were a spy from his plans. That's enough for you to be locked away. Is that what you want? You need to tell us, why? Captain has never met your commander. You yourself have met Dr. Peacecraft." Rhodes questioned. "She had the audacity to speak freely to me as she wished on our first meeting. Making a fool out of me. She had this coming. She should know her place. She had irritated me to the bone, I want her dead." Mills clearly stated. "I won't answer anymore questions." Mills finally said and stood up from his chair. He smiled at the lead investigator. Unsure of what that meant, he shook it aside and agreed there was a mental issue of this man.
"Lieutenant Colonel Une, this was a live interview with Sergeant Mills. It would seem that this interview did not supply much intel as we had hoped. I leave the rest to you and your staff." Rhodes said before ending the live feed.
Slowly turning to face her team Lieutenant Colonel Une tried to collect her thoughts. Her point of vision was at the captain of Gundam Squadron. She watched as he let his emotions show. Heero had his eyes glued to the blank screen, but not noticing the four men who also hadn't moved their attention away from the screen. Heero looked as if he could kill, the blood boiling through his veins would irrupt anytime soon. "What's out plan?" Heero finally asked. It had been close to two hours since he had seen Relena depart from the base. All he could think of was her and their son. "Captain, this a personal attack on you and your team. Mills has stated that you, your wife and Gundam Squadron pilot's are his targets. You must advise your wife of the recent interview. She may have an idea as to what should be done. She has molded herself from a doctor to a secretary of defense advisor and to your wife. She can give her input as we strategize our defense." Lt. Col. Une said as she walked over to another table to join her staff. "I don't plan on telling her…" Heero said coldly. "You can't hide this for long captain. You must tell her." Lt. Col. Une replied and turned her back. "You're not going to tell Relena? She deserves to know Heero." Duo said as he stared at the back of Heero's head. "She will be giving birth soon. This will only harm her health. I'll figure this out somehow. We have to protect her." Heero said as he got up from his seat. "Just as I was targeted, we are all pawns in this mastermind's game." Heero said as he faced his fellow pilots and decided to leave.
His fellow pilots did nothing with his comment. They let it sink in before following after him. Heero let the wind brush against his body as he leaned on his motorcycle. He kept his hands in his pockets. Before he could fish out his phone to give Relena a call he was interrupted with sound of footsteps. He knew that his fellow comrades wouldn't allow Relena and the baby to go unprotected. They also had themselves to worry about. "Hilde departed the command room as soon as she heard Relena was a target. I'm sure she went to check on Relena." Heero said facing Duo. "We have to plan Heero, we need to be ready." Duo said with a strict tone. "We won't go down with out a fight." Wufei said as he extended his hand for Heero to take. They shook hands and Wufei departed with a brief nod. "Heero, you and Katherine are the only family I have. Hmm… my nephew will be here soon. We must protect this generation. I too won't go down with giving my all." Trowa said as he also extended his hand for Heero to take. "I will inform our fellow alliance. We will build a strong force." Quatre said as he slightly jabbed Heero's shoulder. Duo and Heero were left to gather their thoughts, but the sound of Duo's cellphone took them out of their trance.
(New Port City) Heero & Relena's home
Hilde left shortly after Mills interview. She had been calling Relena several times but no answer. Punching in the house code Hilde made her way inside pathway to the front door. She knocked more than once but no answer. Looking up at the balcony she saw that the bedroom window were open. She checked her bag for the spare key, but couldn't locate it. Hilde made her way to the garage and checked if Relena left her doors unlocked. Reaching under the fender of Relena's car she felt the plastic end and tugged it out from it's secret place. "Yes!" she exclaimed. Running back to the front door she inserted the house key and entered the home. An unfamiliar feeling swept over her. "Relena? Relena?" Hilde called out throughout the house. Finally she decide to head up to the couple's bedroom. The door was already opened but no sign of her best friend. Something seemed to pull her to the walk in closet to her left. "Light's on" Hilde said as she stepped in. "Aaahhhh! Relena! Relena!" Hilde shouts out as she sees her best friend lying lifeless on the carpet floor. Grabbing Relena into her arms she tried to wake her. She checks for a pulse but it's faint. Hilde began to panic and worry. She needed to save Relena and the baby. Grabbing her phone she called Duo. Her voice frantic and shaking. "Duo! Help Relena's unconscious and not responding. Quick! I'm at their house."
(Air force Base)
Heero heard everything that Hilde had said and immediately left the base as quick as his motorcycle can take him. Duo also mounted his motorcycle and left the base not too far from Heero. "You have to be okay Relena. We're coming!" Duo said as he maneuvered on the street. Heero was close to home but it felt as if his destination was getting farther and farther. "Hang on Relena. I'm almost there." Heero said as he made the last turn onto their street. Red lights had emanated their street. An ambulance waited in front of their home. He finally made it home and immediately went inside hoping his wife and son were okay. "Heero!" Hilde shouted when she saw him appear at the doorway. "Let's take her to the hospital. Her pulse is very faint." Said the emergency medical technician. Heero picked up his wife in arms and lead them down to the ambulance. As he laid his wife on the stretcher he kissed her softly on the forehead. Heero sat inside the ambulance holding his wife's frail hand. Hilde and Duo watched as the ambulance pulled away from the house. Praying silently Duo held Hilde in his arms letting her tears soak his uniform. "Heero… Relena…"
