It was the weekend.

It had been two days since Piper had seen or talked to Alex. They had texted back and forth briefly, but nothing serious. They both seemed to be doing their own thing at the moment.

Piper was trying to figure out how she was going to function over the next few hours. It was Polly's baby shower today. She didn't know how she was going to get through it without wanting to cry. Her little girl had been on her mind lately and she couldn't shake the pain away.

"You look nice," spoke Larry from behind her.

Piper turned her head and glanced over at her husband. She didn't say anything in reply as she continued to hold his eye for a moment longer before looking away.

"Hey," he whispered, enclosing the space between them. He immediately wrapped his arms around Piper's waist. "We'll get through this. Together."

Polly's baby shower was co-ed. Larry was attending it with Piper. He knew this baby thing was hard on her still. He knew that his wife was still grieving deeply over the little soul they had lost too soon. He felt the same way too sometimes. However, he knew that one of them had to be the stronger one, to push past all of it and move forward. And that's what he's been trying to do. Move past all the pain. However, Piper, he knew, was still very much behind him on that front.

Again, Piper was silent. She didn't have the energy to talk. She was afraid if she opened her mouth, she would cry. She didn't want to cry or think about anything. She wanted to numb herself off from everything and everyone today.

Larry held her close, planting a trail of soft kisses along her shoulder.

Alex stood by the living room window looking out. She watched as the front door across the street opened and the couple emerged.

She studied them. They looked like they were going somewhere important, she noted by how they were dressed. Piper in a red dress with yellow flowers on it and Larry in a pale blue button up shirt and navy shorts.

Alex's eyes bore into Piper as she walked slowly behind Larry. She couldn't quite read her face, she was too far away. However, she didn't look too happy, Alex noted. Larry was saying something to her which Piper just shook her head at. The brunette wondered where they were going. She hadn't talked much to Piper over the last couple of days. Not that they usually check in with each other.

Alex had been feeling a little funny ever since that day at the movies. She was afraid of the strong feelings she was harvesting suddenly for the blonde. She planned on keeping her distance for a few more days, until she could figure something out or at least make sense of what she wanted from all this. It wasn't like she could easily tell Piper her feelings without getting her heart stomped on.

Alex continued to watch the couple as they got into their car and drove away, disappearing down the street.

The brunette sighed before turning away from the window. Her heart felt heavy suddenly as she moved throughout the house.

She was supposed to be leaving soon herself. Wren's bus was going to be coming in soon. After some major arm twisting, Alex had finally agreed to let her girlfriend come up and stay for the weekend.

Before, Alex had needed a distraction from Wren, but now it seemed like Alex needed Wren as a distraction from Piper.

It was funny how life worked out sometimes.

She wasn't looking forward to the weekend. She knew that Wren would want to go out and explore every spot in town, where Alex just wanted to stay hidden in the house all weekend. She wasn't ashamed of Wren. Despite how annoying and young she acted at times, she really was a hot piece of ass. A piece of ass that Alex had loved to flaunt around the city, showing off her new play thing. But now, Wren's shininess had rubbed off.

Alex was afraid, almost embarrassed to be seen with Wren in town. She knew that Wren wouldn't make a good impression. Not that she ever cared before what people thought of her girlfriends, especially the people in this town.

It was more like she was afraid of what she would see through her own eyes.

Piper cradled a flute of mimosa in her right hand as she ran her left hand through her hair. She was trying to steady herself. She'd already had two glasses and they hadn't even been there an hour yet.

She could feel Larry's concerned eyes on her from across the room, but she ignored him. She knew he was worried about her, but she didn't want to address it. She hadn't wanted to come here today in the first place.

She didn't care if it was her best friend's baby shower and that her mother would be in attendance. She'd begged Larry to drag her out of town for the weekend. But he had insisted that they would go. That she would regret it if she didn't come.

Piper thought that was a load of bullshit. It wasn't like it was a fucking wedding or anything. It was just a fucking baby shower. The baby wasn't even here to enjoy it. This was just a stupid party for the parents. A party she didn't want to have anything to do with. She didn't have the energy for all this. For the cuties decorations around the room and backyard. For the pile of presents. For the stupid guessing games and so on. It all made her want to puke.

Piper stood on the outskirts of the party, leaning against the backyard fence. She'd said her hellos to Polly and Pete and a few of their other friends. She'd already done her duty, she thought.

"Piper," spoke Carol Chapman as she spotted her daughter. "There you are."

"Here I am mother," stated Piper sarcastically back. She eyed her mother for a second, swinging her arms out before tipping the flute back against her lips.

"Piper, must you be drinking. It's not even noon yet," commented Carol judgmentally at her daughter.

"It's half juice," replied Piper as she finished off the glass. And it was true. She was hardly buzzed. There was more orange juice than champagne in the glass.

"I don't care. It's not very becoming for a woman your age," continued Carol, ignoring her daughter's comment.

Piper just looked at her mother coldly. She didn't want to discuss her drinking habits. "Whatever," murmured Piper. She then crossed her arms over her chest like a teenage sulking. Her eyes continued to bore into her mother's, waiting for her to say what she really came over to tell her.

"Piper must you be so childish," sighed Carol after a deafening silence had passed.

"Childish?"

"I know you're upset about Polly having a baby…Larry told me you didn't want to come today." began Carol. "But must you sulk like a child. I raised you better. The miscarriage was over a year ago now. You must really move on from it, all."

Piper felt the tears in her eyes, but she blinked them away. She was more angry than sad over what her mother had just said. Why couldn't her mother be supportive of her for once? Why did everything have to seem like a fucking battle?

"What's going to happen when you get pregnant again?" pushed Carol out of curiosity. "You can't keep on mourning this child. It's not healthy."

Piper really wished people would stop telling her how to grieve for her child. Or how if she magically got pregnant that all the pain would go away. She highly doubted that. She was pretty sure if she got pregnant again, that the pain would be ten times worse than what it was now. She couldn't just replace one child with another. It didn't work like that, she thought.

"It's good to see you too mother." Piper then pushed past her mother and headed back into the house. She needed another mimosa or something a little stronger this time.

"BABE!"

Alex immediately looked up and squinted underneath the harsh rays of sunlight. She knew that voice. She didn't say anything as the sounds of heels clicking against pavement assaulted her ears.

Wren's hips swade back and forth as she approached Alex. Her honey brown hair was down and curled. She smiled broadly as she pushed the giant sunglasses she was wearing off of her face and into her hair.

"Hi," whispered Alex, smiling.

"Hi," whispered back Wren before cashing her lips to Alex's.

Alex allowed for the sensation of Wren's hot wet mouth to take over for a moment before pulling away. She knew if she didn't stop the kiss now it would only escalate. Wren didn't have an off switch when it came to kissing. Wren loved public display of affections. Alex had loved this at first when they started going out, it made her feel young, but now she just found it a little annoying. There was a time and place to be tongue fucking your girlfriend in public.

"I've missed you," whispered Wren as she leaned her forehead against Alex's. Her hazel eyes bored into Alex's green ones. Wren just slightly towered over Alex with the 3 inch sandals she was wearing.

"I've missed you too," replied Alex automatically back. It wasn't a complete lie, she thought. She'd missed her girlfriend a tiny bit.

The couple stayed like this for a second, before Alex was pulling away. She smiled briefly at Wren before taking the medium-sized hard shell suitcase from her hand and putting it in the trunk.

"Let's get the fuck out of here." Alex then leaned in and kissed Wren once again on the lips.

"Yes. Let's," replied Wren breathlessly. She then practically skipped with giddiness around the car to the passenger side. This was going to be a fun weekend, she thought to herself. She was over the moon that Alex had finally allowed her to come up for the weekend and visit her in her hometown.

Alex just rolled her eyes slightly at her girlfriend's joy before climbing into the driver's seat.

It was going to be a long weekend.

The couple then pulled out of the bus station parking lot and towards Alex's house.

Piper milked her fourth mimosa as she sat painfully watching as Polly opened her gifts.

Everyone ooed and awed as tiny little clothes and socks were unwrapped. They were all in some sort of shade of blue. No one seemed to care about gender stereotypes, thought Piper bitterly to herself as yet another blue item was unwrapped.

It was a good thing that Polly was having a boy. If she was having a girl, Piper would find watching this un-gifting much harder.

Piper had just begun to shop for her little one before the miscarriage. She remembered carefully picking out a few pieces of clothing. She hadn't wanted to go crazy on buying stuff too soon, she remembered clearly thinking. The few pieces of clothing she had picked up; a light grey onesie, a black and white striped footie pajamas and another pair with stars on it, she had all re-gifted to Polly. She knew it was tacky of her to do so. But she hadn't had the heart to go out to a baby store and pick something for her friend's baby. Plus, she had no use for the clothes anymore.

It was better for Baby Finn to have them.

Piper smiled stiffly as Polly unwrapped her gift and everyone once again awed at the tiny-ness of the outfits.

She listened briefly as Polly thanked her for the gift. She was thrilled by them.

Piper didn't care if Polly had seen the clothing before. Piper hadn't remembered if she had shown off her purchases to her friend or not when she had bought them so long ago now. And again she didn't have the heart to care.

She drained the remainder of her drink, the sweetness of the beverage running down her throat before rising to her feet. She had stayed long enough, she thought, she needed to get away. She needed to find Larry and get the hell out of there.

Piper excused herself from the room, but no one paid any attention to her, which she was grateful for. She placed the empty flute down onto a nearby surface as she pushed her way through a body of people that had gathered by the doorway.

She found Larry in the kitchen pouring himself a cup of coffee.

"Hey," he whispered as she approached him.

"Hi," she whispered sadly. "Can we go home?"

Her blue eyes bored into his dark brown ones. She prayed that he wasn't going to make a big deal about leaving early. They had been there for two hours now. There was still another few hours to go.

"Why?" asked Larry, his eyebrows fused together in puzzlement. "They still hadn't cut the cake." He abandoned his coffee and immediately reached out for Piper's hands.

"Cut the cake? This isn't a fucking wedding, Larry!" snapped Piper, suddenly pulling away from his grasp. "I don't care about fucking cake. I've had enough." Her blue eyes silently begging with him to leave the shower.

"Well, I haven't."Larry squared his shoulders back and looked grimly on at his wife. He was enjoying the baby shower and wasn't ready to leave. Unlike Piper, he quite enjoyed all this baby stuff. It was nice to celebrate their friends' happiness, he thought.

"Fine then. Just give me the car keys and I'll go home," spoke Piper after a deafening silence had passed between them. She held out her hands for the car keys. She was irritated with her husband. She didn't understand why he wanted to stay, but she wasn't going to stay around and argue about it.

"No, Pipes." Larry shook his head from side to side. "You've been drinking."

"Fuck Larry," spat Piper."You sound like my mother!" She was barely tipsy. She hardly thought that four mimosa counted as drinking. She was fine to drive.

"I'm just concerned about you,"said Larry in a soft voice. He looked onto Piper with concern. He didn't like seeing her like this. He knew that Piper was only a small step away from breaking down. He could tell that she was barely holding it together. He knew coming here today had been hard for her.

"I'm fine," lied Piper. This wasn't the time and place to be discussing her mental state.

"Just give me the keys," urged Piper again.

"No. I'm not letting you go until we discuss this," said Larry holding his ground.

"Discuss what?" huffed Piper. She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at Larry.

"The baby," he whispered. He knew he was treading on thin ice by bringing up the baby, but he wanted to talk about it.

"I don't want to talk about Polly's baby," said Piper.

"No not Polly's baby. Our's, Pipes. I want to talk about our baby." He once again made an attempt to take her hand, but she took a step away from him.

"Larry, this isn't really the time…" Piper shook her head slightly.

"We haven't talked about her in awhile," continued to press Larry.

"What's there to talk about? She died. She's dead. One minute I was carrying her and then next she was fucking gone!" Piper's voice cracked slightly with emotion. Why was Larry doing this? She thought.

"That's what I mean. You aren't over it," said Larry. His brown eyes bore into his wife's face. He knew he was hitting a nerve, however they needed to discuss this. He thought they had passed all this. Piper had seemed to be getting better after a few months after it had happened. But over the last few weeks, he was noticing that he'd been wrong. Piper wasn't over it.

"Please. Do we have to talk about this now? I can't," whispered Piper. She was trying not to cry as she locked eyes with Larry.

"But I want to," spoke Larry firmly. He was tired of hiding everything under the rug. He knew it was a Chapman thing not to discuss anything that wasn't pleasant. But he knew that these things had to be talked about. Especially if they really were going to consider having another baby. Which he most wanted too. He wanted a baby. He wanted what their friends were about to have.

"What do you want to talk about?" sighed Piper after a moment had passed. She knew that Larry wasn't going to drop it, no matter how much she begged him not too.

"Well being surrounded by all this...stuff...it just makes me think. That if we are going to have another baby...we need to get through this….I thought we were passed it...but now I can see that we aren't. You aren't." It hurt him to say that last part, but it was the truth. He had grieved their daughter, but he was ready to move on. He'd been ready to move on a while ago, he realized. But he knew that Piper wasn't in the same place that he was.

"Larry, please…" Piper's eyes once again filled with tears. However, she blinked them away. It wouldn't do them any good if she started crying.

"Fuck, Pipes." Larry ran his hand through his hair and looked away from the blonde. Why couldn't she just talk to him?

"Fuck you! You have no fucking idea what I'm going through." cried out Piper in frustration. She didn't want his piety. She didn't want his support. She just wanted to be the fuck was trying to move passed it, but having every body bringing it up wasn't helping.

"That's what I'm talking about. Fucking tell me! I want to help you. I'm your fucking husband for fuck's sake!" argued Larry.

"There is nothing you or anyone can help me with...You can't bring her back...no one can. Please Larry. Just give me the keys. I can't be here anymore. It's suffocating. I can't enjoy this like you want me too. Every time I see Polly's belly, I think back to my own. I can't look at baby things without wanting to pull my hair out and crying. I want to be far away…please." Piper held out her hand once again for the car keys.

Larry stared at his wife for a moment. He hated how upset she was at the moment. He hated how she couldn't or wouldn't talk to him about all this. The miscarriage had been devastating for the both of them. He hated that Piper didn't understand that this was all hard on him too. He wanted to tell her that he was there too. That he had lost a daughter too. However, he didn't push it. He could tell that they both needed some time apart. This hadn't been the smartest move to pick a fight now at their friend's baby shower.

"Fine," he sighed as he took the keys out of his pocket and dropped them into Piper's outstretched hand.

The air in the room felt stale.

It smelt heavily of sex and sweat. Since coming home with Wren, the couple hadn't been able to keep their hands off of each other. The sex was a needed distraction for Alex. She hadn't wanted to talk or show her girlfriend around her childhood home. She'd immediately pulled Wren into the bedroom.

Alex's heart was racing as she tried to catch her breath.

The couple was in the spare bedroom stretched out on the bed. The sheets and duvet were twisted and smashed together at the end of the bed. Wren rested her head against Alex's shoulder, lazily playing with her own nipples.

"That was amazing…" spoke Wren breathlessly.

"Yeah. It was good."

"It was better than good," huffed Wren. "I've missed having sex with you." She popped herself onto an elbow and smiled at Alex.

Alex smiled stiffly at the younger woman. She didn't really miss having sex with her. She had a pretty blonde she rather have sex with now. But of course, she wasn't going to admit that to Wren.

"Me too," she murmured, before planting a kiss on Wren's lips before getting out of bed. She immediately went to the bedroom window and opened it.

It really did smell in there.

"Where are you going?" asked Wren.

"Water. You want?" Alex hastily got dressed in her clothes from earlier.

"Do you have wine?" asked Wren hopefully, who continued to sit on the bed, watching Alex move about the room.

"I've got beer."

"Fine." huffed Wren as she fell back against the pillows.

Alex let out a chuckle response before leaving the room.

Piper felt the tears in her eyes, but she rapidly blinked them away. She didn't want to cry or at least not while driving.

She just wanted to get back home before she was pushed over the edge.

Her thoughts were filled with babies and tiny little things. She hated the pain she was feeling in her heart. She hated how Larry had pushed her like that back at Polly's. She hated how he had brought up their daughter.

He hadn't brought her up in months. They'd both used planning their wedding as a distraction from the pain and sorrow. And then they'd moved. But now after everything, it seemed like they both were still hurting.

Piper knew Larry wanted to move past it and he thought the best way was by trying for another. She knew her husband wanted to start a family. And at first she'd been on board with the idea, but now she wasn't so sure what she wanted. They had talked about it briefly while on their honeymoon, but Piper was pretty sure she had been gleefully drunk and in love when she had agreed to start trying again. She hadn't been thinking clearly, she knew that now.

"Fuck him!" cursed Piper loudly. Fuck Larry for bringing up all these old feelings and wounds. Especially on a day like today when it had been hard enough to get out of bed.

"Fuck everyone!" she cursed again as she pulled up in front of her house. She stayed sitting in her car for what seemed like hours. Now that she was actually home, she didn't have the energy to go inside.

Her mind kept on flashing back to that box underneath the bed. The one that contained all of Emery's things. It was like that Poe poem about the heart underneath the floor. She knew she would be drawn to it the moment she stepped through the threshold of the front door.

Her hands gripped the steering wheel hard, turning her knuckled white. Why was this so hard? She should be past this now, she thought. She should be over the pain and devastation of miscarrying. Why wasn't she over it? She heard and read stories all the time about woman who miscarried and then happily got pregnant again months later. Why couldn't she be like that? Why couldn't she just accept that miscarriages happened and that it was a part of life?

Hot tears brimmed her eyes and fell one by one down her face. She didn't make any attempt to brush them off as her hand continued to grip the wheel. She allowed the pain to come, she welcomed it. She was tired of holding herself together for Larry, for her mother, for Polly. She was fucking tired of it. She knew she needed to continue to grieve over the baby.

Ugly sobs shook her body as she remembered the nurse handing over the smallest bundle ever into her hands.

Alex busied herself in the kitchen.

She was attempting to make some sort of meal for her and Wren. She'd barely eaten anything for breakfast that morning and it was now almost midday. She was starving and she knew that Wren would be hungry soon too. Sex always seemed to awaken the young woman's appetite.

Luckily, Alex had finally managed a trip out to the grocery store, so the kitchen was fully stocked again. Exactly it was probably more stocked now than it had been ever since she'd been here.

The brunette wasn't much of a cook. Neither had been her mother, so her cooking skills were the basics of basics. Right now, she was in the middle of cooking a box of spaghetti.

Just as the pot began to boil over, there was a knock at the front door. Alex frowned slightly at this. She looked briefly over her shoulder towards the hallway before turning her attention back onto the task at hand. Whoever was at the door could wait.

However, the person at the door wasn't getting the hint. They knocked again.

"Do you want me to get that?" asked Wren as she appeared suddenly in the kitchen wearing Alex's pale blue robe.

Alex shook her head.

No, she did not want Wren answering the door. No one knew she was here and she wanted to keep it that way. She assumed it was Nicky at the door. The two women hadn't spoken since their little run in at the cinema. Alex had meant to meet up with her friend and talk to her about what she had seen or so she had promised Piper she would. However, it had slipped her mind. And now there was no way she was going to face Nicky with Wren here. Nicky would just make it ten times worse than it already was for her.

No, it was best if they just ignored the door, Alex thought.

However, again there was a third knock.

"Shit," swore Alex as the pot once again began to boil over.

Wren stood there, studying her girlfriend's backside. She fidgeted with the belt of the robe as she debated if she should help Alex with the pasta or go and answer the door. Whoever it was, was not getting the hint.

They continued to knock repeatedly.

Whoever it was, clearly wanted to see Alex.

"For fuck's sake," murmured Wren. "I'm just going to go answer it." She then turned on her heel and walked out of the kitchen and down the hallway.

Alex called out after her, but she ignored her.

The brunette just prayed that it was no one important as she listened as Wren opened the door.

After some time, Piper finally managed to pull herself together and get out of the car. She ran her fingers underneath her eyes, trying her best to brush away whatever makeup that was still left on her face. She barely took notice of her disheveled appearance in the reflection on the car window. She knew she looked like shit, but she didn't care. She hoped that Alex wouldn't care either.

The blonde slugged her purse onto her shoulder as she began to walk down the driveway and across the street.

She knew she should call Alex first before showing up at her doorstep. However, she didn't. She could already see that Alex was home by her car being in the driveway. It had never been an issue before her showing up unannounced at her door. She figured it wouldn't be an issue this time either.

Despite what she told Larry about wanting to be alone, she didn't. She wanted to be with Alex. She needed a distraction from the heartache that continued to course through her and Alex was it. She was now realizing that she was using Alex and this whole affair as a way not to have to think about everything else in her life.

Piper let out a deep breath as she approached Alex's front door and knocked.

If Piper wasn't on the verge of a nervous breakdown, she would have left. But she desperately needed to see Alex so she continued to rap her knuckles against the surface of the door.

Her actions became more urgent as each second passed. She chewed on her bottom lip, praying that Alex would open up. She really needed to see her at the moment.

Piper took a slight step back as if she had been slapped as the door opened and a stranger appeared back at her.

"Hello?"

For a moment, Piper thought she was dreaming as she took in the sight of this woman before her wearing Alex's robe. She immediately recognized the robe from that first night she'd come over here in hopes of finishing off that almost kiss.

"Who are you?" stuttered Piper, finally finding her voice. She rubbed the back of her neck as she studied the other woman's face. She'd a pretty good idea on who this young creature was before her, however she needed to hear it out loud.

"I'm Wren," stated the other woman coldly. She narrowed her eyes slightly at Piper, taking in her appearance.

"Is Alex home?" pressed on Piper. "I really need to talk to her…" Her voice trailed off. What the fuck was she doing? She thought. She suddenly felt like an idiot coming here. Alex wasn't hers to come running to and discuss her problems with. Alex had her own life. They'd both agreed that this thing they were doing was just about sex. Piper didn't need to go on ruining it by coming here and blabbing about her emotions and shit. Alex could probably careless about her miscarriage. She was so stupid, thought Piper bitterly to herself.

"Who are you?" asked Wren. She crossed her arms over her chest and glared on at Piper, waiting for an answer. She knew she wasn't Nicky or any of her other friends, she'd never met Nicky before, but had seen pictures. She'd never seen this woman before.

"I'm Piper," spoke Piper weakly. "I live across the street." She gestured wildly behind at her house. She could tell that this Wren person didn't like the looks of her. She didn't want to cause trouble between Alex and who she assumed was the girlfriend.

"What's going on here?" asked Alex as she suddenly came up behind Wren. She'd heard Piper's voice from the kitchen.

Alex could feel some sort of tension between the two women. She knew how Wren could get around other girls that she thought were a threat. Wren was the jealous type. She kept her face blank with emotion as she looked from Wren to Piper and back.

"Nothing babe," replied Wren, a sudden smile appearing on her face. She said that a little too sweetly for Alex's liking.

Piper didn't like hearing Wren call Alex babe, but she ignored it. She had enough to process already, she didn't have the space to analyze what her feelings towards Alex were too.

"Are you okay?" asked Alex suddenly towards her. The brunette's eyes were filled with concern as she continued to study Piper's tear stained face.

"I'm fine," replied Piper quickly.

Alex wasn't convinced by this. She cocked a thin plucked eyebrow as her green eyes continued to study Piper. She ignored Wren, who she could feel was glaring at her. She wasn't concerned about her girlfriend and her ego at the moment. She was more worried about Piper.

Piper looked back at Alex for a second longer before forcing a smile onto her face. She didn't want Alex to worry about her. She never wanted Alex to piety her like she was now. "Really, Alex. I'm fine."

Alex didn't believe Piper for a second that she was fine. However, no matter how much she wanted to press the blonde about the issue. She knew she couldn't. Not just because of Wren. But also because it wasn't her place to step. Her and Piper were hardly friends she needed to remind herself.

"Well...I'll just be going…"spoke Piper. She had overstayed her visit. "I'm sorry..I interrupted your...I'm sorry." She looked solely at Alex as she spoke this. She really was sorry for coming over her out of the blue. "Bye."

"Wait." called out Alex, reaching out quickly and grasping Piper by the wrist. "Are you sure you're okay?" She lowered her voice so only Piper could hear her. She was suddenly concerned that something had happened between Piper and her husband. Alex had only met Larry once and sure he didn't look like he could hurt a fly, but that didn't stop her from thinking that Larry had upset Piper in some way. She didn't want to send Piper back into a dangerous situation.

"What? No. God No. It's really nothing, Alex!" Piper shook her head vigorously as she realized what Alex was hinting at. "I'm really fine." Her eyes looked briefly down at where Alex's hand still rested on her wrist, before looking up. "I'm fine."

Alex was silent for a second as she studied Piper's face. She was only half convinced that the blonde was really fine. "Ok."

She then released her grip on Piper's wrist.

The blonde immediately stepped away and began to descend down the stairs of the porch.
