Darien turned to Serena as they waited for the light to turn green. He leaned over the center arm rest hoping she would meet him half way with a kiss. She looked at him from the corner of her eye, smiled and leaned over quickly to give him a quick kiss. The light turned green and with a heavy sigh Darien started to drive again. He was hoping that they would hit another red light so he could get a longer kiss from her, but unfortunately, every light was green.
Serena giggled as she observed Darien's frustrated state.
"Why are you laughing?" Darien asked annoyed.
"Because you look so cute when you are all frazzled." She teased and then brushed his face with her hand.
Before she could remove her hand from his face he quickly turned to it and give it a kiss.
"Are you sure you aren't too tired for a date? You have been busy." Serena asked with some concern in her voice.
"For the millionth time yes." Darien reached over and grabbed her hand. "I haven't taken you on a real date all week. Just stopping by your place, isn't enough." He pulled her hand to his lips and kissed it.
"Where are we going by the way? I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant out this way." Serena looked out the window, observing everything outside.
"We are almost there...it's a surprise." He answered with a smirk.
What was left of the car ride was silent. Darien held her hand the whole way. She could tell he was nervous, because his palms were starting to sweat. She rubbed his hand to comfort him.
He turned down a road and Serena noted all the houses.
"Are we lost?" She asked confused. "What dining place is in the middle of residential neighborhood?"
"We are almost there..." Darien looked to his right and turned up a drive way. "And we are here..."
Serena looked at the white single story home in from of her. "What is this?"
"It's a house...obviously." He got out of the car and went around to open her door.
"What restaurant is this? There is no name on?"
"Because it is not a restaurant..." Darien explained helping her out of the car and then shutting her door. He could not help admire her confused look. She looked so cute confused.
She took a few steps towards the house. She could see that only one light was.
"Whose house is this? Why are we here?"
"So many questions, my love. But I promise they will be answered." He grabbed her hand. "Let's go inside before our food gets cold."
"I am so confused." Serena said following behind him.
"I know you are...which means this is a good surprise." He let go of her hand, reached into his pocket and pulled out a key. Serena watched as he used the key to open the door.
"How did you get that key?" She asked.
Darien just laughed, opened the door and signaled her to enter. She just looked at him. "You're not going to answer my questions are you?"
"Eventually."
Serena rolled her eyes and entered the house. She gasped. Candles and rose petals led the way to the kitchen in the back. She cautiously followed. The house was pretty much empty, except for the candle lit table in the back and the decorations. Darien followed behind Serena.
"It is a really pretty house." She finally reached the table. It was set perfectly. "Did you do all this?" She smiled from ear to ear.
Darien could not help but lean in to kiss her, even though he just kissed her teeth. "I did have some help. Please sit down." He pulled out her chair.
"Who helped you?" Serena asked.
"Well Mina and Raye helped with the decorations." He helped push her in closer to the table. "The Lita made dinner." He lifted the plate cover to present the meal.
"It looks amazing." Serena took a whiff. "Smells amazing too."
"Good, can I get you some wine? Lita picked a few out." He placed the plate covers on the center island.
"Which ever one is fine." She shrugged.
Darien grabbed two glasses and poured them each a glass of wine and walked over. He placed one glass in front of Serena and then one next to his plate. He sat down and threw his napkin over his lap.
"Please eat before it gets cold."
"I was trying to show some manners and wait for you, but whatever." She rolled her eyes. She picked up her fork and started digging. "So are you going to tell me about this house?" She asked after swallowing her food.
Darien too finished his first bite. "Wow Lita out did herself this time."
Serena just nodded. "So... who owns this house?"
Darien put his fork down, picked up his glass of wine and took a sip. "Actually...I do."
"What? This house is yours?"
"Well hopefully when you're ready it will be yours too."
Serena was trying to understand what he was saying. She was pushing her food around her plate.
"You were right."
Serena looked up.
"Yes, I said it you were right, I will say it again if that makes you feel better."
She just gave him a squishy face.
"The condo is not a family place, they need a yard, and this place was perfect. Right in the middle of your work and mine, and it has a big enough yard. It is only one story so we do not have to worry about our kids falling down stairs." He took another sip of wine. "And I just knew you would love it...well I at least I hope you do. I took the girls with me and they helped." He shrugged put his glass down.
Serena continued to stare at him. She was still at loss for words.
"I know we have things to work on, and though I hope you would move in right away, I understand if you need some time." He lifted his plate. Ran his under it. "I want you take this for whenever you are ready." He lifted his hand that was now at the center of the table, presenting her a key.
She looked at the key, then at him as he looked at her.
"Please say something."
She opened her mouth and nothing came out.
"Do you hate the house? Do you hate the food? Anything."
"I can't believe you did all this..."
"I did for us. For our future. For our kids." He explained.
"But what about the condo?"
"Mal is going to take it over. He really loves the view and it will be a good place for him and Mina until they have kids. Then we can hold onto it for ours."
Serena took a bite of her food, then swallowed. "You loved that condo."
"Yeah, but it is no place to raise a family, and I want one just as much as you do." Darien's heart was racing. He was starting to get so nervous. "Do you not like the house."
"No."
Darien's face sank.
"I don't mean it like that. When I said no, I meant I love the house. It is gorgeous, it is the perfect size. Exactly what I would have wanted." She reached her hand across the table for him to grab. "But is this what you really want? I don't want you to change yourself Darien. I don't want you to say you want all the things I want because-"
"Sere, if I did not want to do this, I wouldn't. Simple."
Serena looked around the house. There was another living room that a few steps away from where they were sitting. It had a fireplace with the cutest arch. It had a dip in the wall, and right away Serena imagined a family portrait hanging right there. She imagined them sitting there, in front of the fire, just enjoying each other's company.
"It is a beautiful house Darien."
"And one day we will make it feel like home." He looked as Serena kept scanning the rooms. "We can do a tour if you would like, the house is pretty empty. I was going to let you handle all the decorating, when you are ready to move in of course."
"And you'll help me with the painting."
"We have to paint? Can't we pay someone else to do it?"
Serena shook her head. "We can't just spend money on things we can easily do ourselves."
"I am not going to argue. As long as it makes you happy." He continued to rub her hand as he held it. "I really do love you and I want to spend the rest of my many lives showing you that."
Serena just nodded.
"I am sure the food is cold, want me to heat it a little?" Darien offered.
"No it's fine." Serena smiled.
Once the food was finished, Darien picked everything up and started the tour. With every room she passed she could just imagine how it was going to look once it was filled. Walking down the hallway all she could think of was toys everywhere, from her kids. They finally reached the master bedroom, it too was empty, but it was huge. Bigger than the one in the condo. She stood in the middle, looked out the double doors that led to the backyard. Darien came from behind her, wrapped his arms around her.
"it is a really big room, Dare."
He kissed her temple. "I figured when the babies are smaller it would be easier to keep them in here with us...and I didn't want a room where the crib took all the space.
Serena just nodded.
"I know what you are think about. You will never have to feel the way you did at the condo again. I promise on everything that I will never let you go to bed feeling lonely. I will be here every night to keep you warm." He kissed her cheek this time and held her tighter as they looked out at their backyard.
"That pool is going to need a fence around it." Serena noted.
"I know, I will have someone build it."
