DEGRASSI: GLORY DAYS - S02E01 - SUMMERTIME
DISCLAIMER: I DON´T OWN DEGRASS
1. Ext. Driveway. Morning.
We´re outside Michelle´s house. Kat, Trish and Carl are packing their tent and bags in to Michelle´s car, that´s pretty loaded up. Michelle comes out of the house.
Michelle:
It would be nice, if there was room for me.
Kat:
You´re demanding today!
Michelle:
They can give me a ticket, because I can´t look our the rear window. Are you going to pay that?
Carl:
Tif promised, she would only bring one bag.
Trish:
We´ll be up there for two and a half day. How much clothes can she need?
Carl:
You don´t know Tif like I do.
Sandra comes out of the house.
Sandra:
Are we ready to go?
Kat:
I think so.
Sandra:
Sun and relaxation, here we come!
She smiles at the prospect of it.
OPENING CREDITS
2. Int. Car. Morning.
Michelle and Tif are driving along, following after Mike´s car with the others in it. "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer is playing on the radio. Tif can´t help herself from humming along.
Michelle:
A new favorite of yours?
Tif:
Nothing will ever beat ABBA, but it´s got a cool beat and you can dance to it.
Michelle:
That´s not all it´s written for, if you know what I mean.
Tif:
So people can listen to it?
Michelle:
People like it, because it´s a great song to do it to!
Tif becomes a little shy.
Tif:
It, as in ...
Michelle:
Sex, the nasty, the horizontal rhumba, intercourse, love making. Whatever you want to call it.
Tif:
Oh, I´m sorry, if I came off as a ditz.
Michelle:
You can´t tell me, you´ve never thought about it.
Tif:
I haven´t got that far in my fantasies yet.
Michelle:
So, you and Carl haven´t done it?
Tif:
No! We´re too young for that stuff!
Michelle:
You´ve both turned 15 over the summer. It´s not like it´s far in to the future. How far have you gotten?
Tif:
Not far. I like it when he touches me, but it freaks me out a little at the same time.
Michelle:
Do you touch yourself?
Tif:
Not that it´s your business, but no! My mom told me, decent girls don´t do that type of thing!
Michelle:
My mom wasn´t a fountain of good advice, but she did give me a few good pieces. I was freaked out about being touched by guys too.
Tif:
You were?
Michelle:
She said it was because, I wasn´t comfortable with my body and she was right. After I started masturbating, I quickly got over it.
Tif starts considering it.
Tif:
I guess, it can´t hurt to get to know your own body.
Michelle:
I could give you some tips, if you want?
Tif:
My dad has always told me, I should listen to experts, when it´s something I don´t know anything about.
They smile at each other.
3. Ext. Building Site. Day.
Mike is on the roof of a house, re-shingling it with his boss Red Carlson, a friendly looking guy in his 40´s. They obviously work well together. Red checks his watch.
Red:
What do you say we push lunch, so we can get this section finished?
Mike:
Sure, Red.
Red:
You´re flexible. That´s a good quality in a man.
Mike:
My girlfriend is too, but that´s good for a completely different reason.
Red laughs and Mike smiles. They clearly enjoy each other´s company.
Red:
Are you taking her out tonight?
Mike:
No, she´s off camping with some friends for the weekend.
Red:
And all the while, you´re here busting your behind.
Mike:
I´d rather be doing this, than working at McDonald´s. I told her, I´m not going back to school.
Red:
How did she react?
Mike:
She knows that school has never been for me, so she was understanding. She still had to play the guilt trip on me, of course. (in his best Sandra voice) "You can´t leave me alone at school next year", as if she didn´t have other friends.
Red:
What did you do to make her happy again?
Mike:
I´m not sure, I´m through it yet, but I let her borrow my car for the weekend as a start.
Red:
5 bucks says she has an accident.
Mike:
You´re on. She knows how much that car means to me, so I´m sure she´ll be careful.
They hear yelling from below them. Dexter is being told off by his boss.
Red:
She can only be a better driver, than you friend there is at his job. His boss yelling like that, isn´t helping him either.
Mike:
You don´t believe in yelling?
Red:
I yell at my dog, when he starts humping a stranger´s leg, but I´ll never do it to my workers. Ruining someone´s self esteem, has never made anyone a better worker. If someone isn´t good enough, it´s better to fire them and get it over with.
Mike looks pleased, that he´s found himself a good boss.
4. Ext. Gas Station. Day.
Sandra is filling up Mike´s car, as Michelle and Tif come up to her.
Michelle:
That´s what you get for driving a gas guzzler.
Tif:
Did Carl go inside?
Sandra:
Are you having withdrawals?
Michelle:
You should have heard her. It was "Carl´s so great" or "I love him so much" all the way here.
Michelle and Tif wink at each other. She heads in to the store.
Sandra:
You can´t tell me, there´s not a part of you, that wishes you were as much in love, as she is.
Michelle:
I´m not completely sure about my old stance on relationships anymore.
Sandra:
Oh?
The tank is full and Sandra starts finishing up.
Michelle:
I think it´s the celibacy, that´s done it. Not getting any and seeing the happy couples and Summer romances all around me, it´s made me want to feel apart of it.
Sandra:
How´s your little problem coming along?
Michelle:
I should be done with it now. I´m telling you, from now on it´s two gloves or no love with me.
Sandra:
Probably a good idea.
5. Int. Store. Day.
Kat and Trish are stocking up on sodas, piling them up in Carl´s arms.
Carl:
I think we have enough.
Tif comes over to them. She notices that one of the shop attendants (a frail, but quietly attractive woman with glasses in her mid thirties), is paying close attention to them.
Tif:
I think they´re afraid, we´ll rob the place.
Kat:
There´s something familiar about her.
Trish:
Seriously?
Kat:
Yeah, like I´ve seen her before, but I can´t put my finger on it.
Trish:
You have no idea, where you might have seen her?
Kat:
I´m not even sure I have seen her, there´s just something familiar about her face.
Carl´s arms are starting to get tired.
Carl:
Are we done?
Kat:
Yeah, we are. Sorry, Carl.
Carl, Trish and Tif head up to the counter. Kat and the shop attendant make eye contact and smile shyly at each other. The shop attendant leaves and heads in to a back room.
We cut to the counter, where Edna (a woman in her 60´s), the store´s owner, comes over to serve them. She starts ringing in prizes. Kat comes up to the desk.
Trish:
Sorry, this might seem like a weird question, but do you know if your assistant has lived in Toronto? I´m pretty sure, I´ve seen her before.
Edna:
Not that I know of. She´s always been a local girl to these parts, as far as I know. That´ll be 24.50.
Tif hands her the money.
Kat:
You don´t have to pay.
Tif:
You were nice enough to invite me, so it´s the least, I can do.
Edna:
50 cents back and I wish you all a pleasant weekend up here.
Trish:
Is our "tourist status" that obvious?
Edna:
You might as well have written it on your foreheads. Everyone´s friendly up here, as long as you don´t litter or act too crazy.
Kat:
We´ll make a note of it. Nice to meet you.
Edna:
You too ... ?
Kat:
Katherine, but people call me Kat.
Edna:
I´m Edna. Come back any time, you hear?
Kat, Trish, Carl and Tif leave the store. The shop assistant comes out from the back room. She watches through the window, as Kat gets in to their car.
Edna:
You´re sure, it´s her, Darlene? There´s a lot of Katherines out there.
Darlene:
I could tell, when I looked her in the eyes. That´s my daughter, no doubt about it.
Edna:
She asked where you came from. I thought it was best to lie.
Darlene tries to let it sink in, that she´s just seen Kat again.
6. Ext. Building Site. Day.
Mike is eating a sandwich, as Dexter comes over to him.
Dexter:
Late lunch?
Mike:
You have to do what the boss man says, right?
Dexter:
We´re going out to celebrate the weekend at a bar close to here, when we get off. Do you want to come?
Mike:
Sure, why not? With Michelle and Sandra away, it´s not like there´s a whole lot going on at our house.
Dexter:
You can tell me about all the threesomes, you´ve been having.
Mike:
What happened to the good, religious boy from school?
Dexter:
He´s had to listen to those dirty minded dumb-asses 5 days a week. I´d better get back to it.
Mike:
See ya later.
Mike finishes off his sandwich in one, big bite.
7. Ext. Camp Site. Day.
Three small tents are being raised and it´s a competition to see, who can do it the fastest. Carl and Tif are far ahead of the others and she´s getting excited at the prospect of winning.
Tif:
Go, go, go!
Carl:
Done!
Carl gets a celebratory kiss from Tif. Kat looks over scepticaly, to see if it´s true.
Kat:
Well, it´s standing.
Carl:
This baby will stay up in a hurricane!
Tif:
Let´s get inside and see what it´s like.
Carl:
It´s a tent like any other.
Sandra:
She wants to make out with you, Bonehead! Get in there!
Carl quickly opens up the tent and climbs inside.
Tif:
No listening, okay?
Kat:
You can have your privacy, but if I hear moaning, I might have to break it up. I promised his mom to keep him away from dangerous animals and that includes cougars.
Tif:
Why does everyone think, we´re doing it?
Sandra:
We´re just teasing you. Don´t keep your man waiting, now.
Tif climbs in the tent. Carl zips it down behind her.
8. Int. Tent. Day.
Carl lies down and Tif lies down on top of him. They start making out and Tif can´t help herself from moaning a little, when he kisses her neck.
Tif:
We have to stay quiet.
Carl:
They´ve all heard these sounds before.
Tif:
Maybe we should wait until later.
Carl starts kissing her hand in stead.
Carl:
If that´s what you want.
Tif:
You know, I had a very interesting talk with Michelle, while we drove up here. It was about masturbation.
Carl:
Did she give you tips or something?
Tif pulls her hand away from him.
Tif:
Do guys give each other tips?
Carl:
Not really. The only "instruction" I remember getting, was a wildly inaccurate description from a ten year old, when I was eight.
Tif:
I was thinking that we could do it together tonight, after everyone´s gone to sleep.
Carl looks vey interested.
Carl:
I´m game.
Tif:
But we don´t touch each other´s naughty places. My hand stays on mine and yours stay on yours.
Carl:
We can still kiss, can´t we?
Tif:
I think, we´ll have to make the rules up, as we go along.
They go back to kissing.
9. Int. Darlene and Cynthia´s House. Day.
Darlene comes in to her house and her dog, a cocker spaniel named Julio, comes running to greet her. She pets him and he excitedly wags his tail. Cynthia Rosenberg, her 33 year old best friend and room mate, comes out to greet her.
Cynthia:
What are you doing home this soon?
Darlene:
Something happened, that freaked me out.
We cut to them lying on the couch. Darlene is cuddled up in Cynthia´s arms.
Cynthia:
Did you recognize her right away?
Darlene:
I somehow knew it was her, the moment I saw her. After she´d left, all the memories flooded in over me.
Cynthia:
You´re sure, she didn´t recognize you?
Darlene:
My hair is completely different and I never wore my glasses in pictures, so I don´t think she did.
Cynthia:
Do you want to see her and let her know, she met her mom today?
Darlene:
Part of me does, but another part of me knows I did the right thing, when I left her with my parents. She was with what seemed like good friends and looked care free and happy. What could she gain from me trying to wrestle myself back in her life?
Cynthia:
This has been eating away at you, since before we´d even met. If you want to be happy ...
Darlene:
This is about her, not me.
Cynthia:
Don´t you think, she´d want to meet you? It must have been on her mind over the years.
Darlene:
What do I say? "Hi, I´m your mom. Sorry for abandoning you".
Cynthia:
We can drive up to the camp grounds later, if you want.
Darlene:
This was a big enough step for one day. Right now, it´s just nice to know, that she´s doing fine.
Cynthia strokes her hair and comforts her.
10. Int. Bar. Evening.
Mike and Dexter are playing darts and drinking beer. Dexter hits a 20, a triple 20 and a 19. He smiles and goes to write on the board.
Mike:
Someone´s been practicing.
Dexter:
One of the guys taught me how to throw the dart properly. It makes it a lot easier. Double 6 and I´ve won.
Mike:
How far am I behind?
Dexter:
You´re at 112.
Mike takes a sip of beer and steps up to throw.
Dexter:
You might as well give up already.
Mike:
Remember my nick name from my Football days?
Dexter:
You were the one, who came up with "The Comeback Kid".
Mike throws his three darts and makes a face. Dexter writes on the board.
Dexter:
63 left.
Mike:
Troy called me it, a few times.
Dexter:
Have you talked to him?
Mike:
He called me yesterday. It sounds like he´s liking College life already and it hasn´t even properly started yet.
Dexter:
I knew, he would.
Dexter throws his three darts. The first two barely miss the double 6 and the last hits the single 6.
Dexter:
Ahh, damn it. Did he talk about the girls down there?
Mike:
He said, it´s like Babe-O-Rama! Are you regretting, that you didn´t go?
Dexter:
Nah, Ruby´s more the College type. I probably would have flunked out within a year, anyway.
Mike:
Check out these skills.
Mike hits a 20, a 20 and a 1.
Dexter:
Playing it safe, eh?
Mike:
Only in darts.
Dexter hits the three and looks annoyed.
Mike:
One, double one.
Dexter:
I know how to count, Mike. You don´t need to remind me!
Mike:
Just go ahead and miss, so I can clean house.
Dexter tries his best to concentrate, but hits the triple one. He bows his head as he retrieves his arrow and has a large sip of beer. Mike throws and hits the double eleven in the first try, winning the game.
Dexter:
Best two out of three.
Mike:
I´m hungry. What do you say we get a burger or something? We can always come back later.
Dexter:
Sure, as long as I get my re-match.
Mike:
Won´t Ruby miss you?
Dexter:
I´m not her favorite guy right now. I´d rather hang out with you, than get another speech from her.
Mike:
Do you want to talk about it?
Dexter:
There´s not a whole lot to talk about. She wants me to go to work, spend none of the money I make and spend my evenings, helping her prepare for College.
Mike:
There was a time, where you wouldn´t have minded.
Dexter:
That was before I got out in to the real world.
They empty their glasses.
11. Ext. Camp Site. Evening.
Kat, Trish, Sandra and Carl are gathered around their cooking gear. Trish is stirring a stew and takes in the smell.
Trish:
Not to brag, but I think this is the best stew I´ve made.
Sandra:
Is it ready?
Trish:
10-15 minutes more and it´ll be perfect.
Kat:
It´ll give Michelle and Tif a chance to get back.
Carl:
I guess, they´re really getting to know each other.
Kat:
Yeah, they´ve been gone for a while now.
Trish takes in another wiff of the stew with a smile.
12. Ext. Forest. Evening.
Michelle and Tif are pretending to gather firewood. They´re both carrying a small amount.
Michelle:
We should go back soon.
Tif:
I´m sorry, if I´ve been annoying you with all my questions. I´ve never had anyone to talk to about this "Woman" stuff before.
Michelle:
Not at all, but it won´t be believable, if this is all we manage to gather.
Tif:
We´ll tell Carl, I got distracted. He knows, I have a tendency to lose track of time, when I find something that interests me.
Michelle:
He just takes you as you are, doesn´t he?
Tif:
It´s a two way street. He takes me how I am and I take him how he is.
Michelle:
You haven´t tried to change him, just a little bit?
Tif:
I like him how he is. What´s the point of being with someone, if you can´t be honest to that person about who you are? It´s called a "Special Someone", because they know your true self better than anyone else.
Michelle:
I´ve always been afraid to let guys get too close, because what if I end up getting hurt?
Tif:
I know it´s gonna hurt, when me and Carl break up. At the same time I know, I would have hated it a lot more, if I´d missed out on all the good times with him.
Michelle:
I thought you were the ultimate romantic, who thought you´d stay together forever.
Tif:
Maybe we will, who knows, but chances are that we won´t. Most couples our age don´t last.
Michelle:
Most couples my age don´t either. I think knowing that, is why I´m so afraid to jump in. If you know it won´t last, then what´s the point?
Tif:
I´m pretty sure it´s thinking like that, that´s why your mom never found anyone new. Love doesn´t make sense, you just feel it and let yourself be swept away by it.
Michelle:
How did you know, Carl would be a good boyfriend?
Tif:
I just thought, he was cute and I had a good feeling about him. When we started getting to know each other, I found out that I like him.
Michelle:
Simple as that?
Tif:
It´s only as hard as you make it for yourself.
Michelle looks at her in wonderment, that someone so young is so much smarter on love, than she is.
13. Int. Darlene and Cynthia´s House. Evening.
Cynthia is watching "Mork and Mindy" on TV, while stroking Julio, who´s practically in ecstasy. Darlene can´t stop staring at a picture. We see that it´s a faded picture of Kat, from when she was 3 years old.
Cynthia:
Are you planning on watching "The Picture Channel" all evening?
Darlene:
I keep think about, what her life is like.
Cynthia:
Are you wondering, if she´s like you were?
Darlene:
I hope she isn´t! They were buying sodas, so that´s a positive sign.
Cynthia:
You don´t know, if they brought Vodka from home. That´s what we would have done, back in the day.
Darlene:
She looked like a sensible girl, with a good head on her shoulders. The kind, who stays out of trouble and does good in school.
Cynthia:
You´re sure, it´s not wishful thinking?
Darlene:
My parents probably learned from their mistakes with me and got it right the second time around.
Cynthia:
It sounds like you want to meet her.
Darlene:
What if she hates me? I don´t know, if could take that kind of defeat.
Cynthia:
Whatever you decide, you know, I´ll help any way I can.
Cynthia laughs at Robin Williams acting crazy on the TV show. Darlene smiles at the thought of Kat, as she keeps staring at the old picture.
14. Int. Bar. Evening.
Mike throws a dart and smiles at the result. Dexter looks drunk and disappointed.
Mike:
Have you had enough yet?
Dexter:
One last game. We play for 50 bucks.
Mike:
Sorry, man. I only play to have something to do, while I´m drinking. Anyway, I´m about at my limit.
Dexter:
You can´t tell me the great Mike Coleman, the partier of all the partiers, is bailing on a night out?
Mike:
The party has to end sometime, or the fun would go out of it. Do you want to share a Taxi?
Dexter:
No, I´m seeing, if I can find someone to play pool against.
Mike:
If I can be honest, I´d say you´re looking to drunk to play. Save your money for another day, pal.
Dexter:
I earned that money, I can do with it what I want!
Mike:
Of course you can, but there´s no reason to waste it, is there? Go home, sleep it off and come back tomorrow. I guarantee, you´ll be playing a lot better by then.
Dexter clearly hates to admit, that Mike is right.
15. Ext. Street. Evening.
Mike and Dexter are waiting for their Taxi by the curb. Dexter is looking depressed.
Mike:
Cheer up, man. We´ll both be home soon.
Dexter:
It´s not that. I can´t believe how bad, I played today.
Mike:
It´s just a game. I got lucky, is all.
Dexter:
IT´S ANOTHER LOSS!
Mike looks surprised at his outburst.
Mike:
Chill out.
Dexter:
You don´t get it, just like Ruby doesn´t!
Mike:
What am I supposed to get?
Dexter:
That I´m trying my best to become a winner again!
Mike looks at him with sympathy.
Mike:
You´re not a loser, Dexter.
Dexter:
What´s the definition of a loser? It´s someone, who never wins. Remind you of someone?
Mike:
Life is up and down. You´ll feel, like you´re on top again some day.
Dexter:
I try at work, but I can´t seem to do anything right. When I see her preparing to start college, I know it´s only a matter of time, until she finds someone better. This isn´t how things were supposed to be for us.
Dexter is almost in tears. Mike puts a comforting hand on his shoulder.
16. Ext. Camp Site. Night.
Sandra yawns, as she getting ready to go in to her and Michelle´s tent. Only Tif and Carl are also up.
Sandra:
I´m hitting the hay. Are you staying up?
Tif:
No, we´ll be going to bed in a moment.
Sandra:
Alright. Don´t do anything, I wouldn´t do.
Tif:
That still leaves all options open, doesn´t it?
Sandra:
Okay, so don´t do anything your mothers wouldn´t want you to do.
Carl:
See you tomorrow.
Sandra:
You too. Sleep tight.
She gets in to the tent and zips it up behind her. Tif and Carl smile at each other and lean in close, so they can whisper.
Tif:
I thought, she´d never go to bed.
Carl:
You´re still up for it?
Tif:
I´ve been getting turned on, just from sitting here and looking forward to it.
Carl:
You´re not the only one. Why do you think, I´ve been sitting like this all evening?
Tif smiles.
Tif:
Is it stiff?
Carl:
As a board.
Tif:
Can I touch it on the outside of your pants?
Carl:
Sure, if you want to.
He spreads his legs a little, so she can feel it. They both smile at the excitement of it all.
Tif:
How do you make it normal again?
Carl:
You either try to think of the least sexy thing in the world or you, you know, give yourself a helping hand.
Tif:
What do you think of, when it has to be the least sexy?
Carl:
Kendricks in Hot Pants. Works every time.
They giggle as she takes his hand and helps him stand up.
