Airi isn't sure she's ever seen Hawks so angry. Each feather stood on end, bristling and buzzing with his rage. His body blocked Dabi's path to her, wings stretched out to full span in intimidation as each feather looked ready to strike.
His feather swords were out, one stretching down to the ground while the other was pointed towards Dabi.
Dabi barely moved an inch when Hawks' feathers shot off from his back, flying straight for the villain as Airi stumbled to her feet to get back.
Hawks won't be able to give his full focus to the fight if she's right behind him like this. He'll be focusing on protecting her instead of fighting Dabi, which he needs to focus more on.
Airi doesn't want him to spend even a moment focusing on her. He can't be distracted for this fight.
"About time you showed up. Now I don't have to hold back." Dabi revealed, a burst of flame erupting around his body as Airi ran back, dropping down where Taiki was still fallen.
Airi couldn't see any of his skin due to the still hot metal. How is she supposed to check his vitals? "Taiki?" Airi quickly scribbled out gloves on her sticky note, not hesitating to try checking Taiki now that her hands were protected.
Taiki didn't move, and she couldn't find a break in the armor to pull it away and check if he were even conscious. The only way she knew he was alive was because she could hear his breathing through the slats that showed his eyes, mouth and nose. But his eyes were closed.
Airi tried to move him, but even if it weren't for that armor it's a hard feat. Taiki normally towers over all of them, and he's built like a brick wall. So, there's no way she's going to be capable of moving him with that suit on.
Airi almost screamed when a burst of flame erupted nearby, the two fighting men shooting past her as they continued to clash violently.
Airi came up with an idea quick, scribbling fast on a new sticky note. A rope wrapped around Taiki's shoulders, hissing for a moment as it touched the hot metal.
Attached to it was a pair of bulls, Airi barely saying a word before the bulls started to pull Taiki. His metal armor scraped loudly against the pavement as he was dragged along, Airi racing after him to make sure he got clear of the fight.
"I'm going to enjoy the look on your face when I take that little songbird of yours. Maybe I'll string her up in a cage, only let her out to- "Airi didn't hear the rest that Dabi shouted at Hawks, as he was suddenly slammed through a window, the hero going right after him.
Airi got Taiki far enough down the street to feel like he'd be safe, before turning around to see if she could see any sign of Hawks or the monster.
On que, a wave of fire burst from the building they had previously smashed into, shattering every window before the two men came tumbling back out of the building and onto the street once more.
His wings are shrinking… Airi knew what that meant, he was losing feathers because of Dabi's fire. He needed help, but no one else was here yet!
Airi started running back before she even knew what she was doing.
Hawks slashed at Dabi with one of his swords while his feathers spun around Dabi, trying to strike anywhere they could while Dabi moved with practice to dodge the incoming attacks.
Dabi wasn't expecting her though.
Airi spun on her heel before releasing the hammer she had created, it soared through the air before smashing right into the side of the villain's face. Dabi was sent skittering across the ground from the force of the hit, Airi breathing heavily as her adrenaline rushed through her veins.
Hawks barely looked at her before a feather shot at her and started trying to pull her away.
No! He needs help, she just smashed a Warhammer into Dabi's face, she's more than capable of helping!
"Oh, I'm gonna enjoy scraping his corruption out of you, songbird. I'll let you watch as we burn his little chicks." Airi's hairs stood on end, feeling the electricity in the air run across her skin as she watched Hawks' wings bristle and puff up even bigger.
That was the wrong thing for him to say.
Hawks moved faster than Airi's ever seen him move, attacking Dabi voraciously and pushing him back further down the street. Further from her.
"I'm going to do to you what should have been done years ago!"
"Is that so? Are you going to stab me in the back like you did Twice? Like you did your fellow heroes?"
Airi broke free from Hawks' feather, running back after them as she watched Hawks' feathers avoid Dabi's flames before going right back in as soon as they tapered off.
"Does she even know what you've done? That you've caused the death of hundreds? That you killed Twice, who you claimed was your friend? What you did for us when you worked with the League?" Dabi asked, flames rising back up around him with each word and lashing viciously towards Hawks.
"I bet she's seen those scars I gave you. But I can bet she doesn't know that you deserved them, for stabbing Twice in the back when he was going to save his friends!" Airi created another hammer, smaller than the last.
"Do you even remember the names of all those heroes who died that day because you failed? They would have died anyways, but their deaths were directly on your hands. For failing at both of your jobs!"
Airi threw the hammer as soon as she realized Dabi's ploy was working, his goading of Hawks was working.
Hawks was attacking more aggressively, but he was caring less about getting his feathers out of range in time to not be burned by Dabi's fire.
This time, her hammer smashed into Dabi's chest, cracking with electricity the moment it made contact.
It knocked Dabi back away from Hawks just as his fire was beginning to grow again, sending him a few feet back before the hammer went flying back towards her.
Airi caught it easily as it came back to her hand, taking a running start to hit him while he's down.
"Airi, get out of here!" Airi narrowly dodged Hawks' feather when it flew at her again, having rolled across the ground out of its prediction of her path.
"No! I can help you! You need help fighting him, your wings are vulnerable to his fire!" Airi reminded him, openly refusing to run away when he needs her help. Let him possibly die this time to Dabi.
"I can fight him easier if you're gone from here!" Hawks snapped back at her, not once taking his eyes off Dabi as he continued fighting.
"Sure, I'll let you believe that. You think I'm going to let her out of here that easily?" Dabi questioned, before flexing his arms out around him.
In seconds, a wall of fire rose around the street, surrounding the three of them and raising halfway up the buildings. It began to catch the buildings on fire, adding to the fire he already started.
"I want you to watch as I take something that you considered valuable." Dabi growled at Hawks with a sadistic grin.
Airi created another electric hammer, finally feeling an itch in her chest as warning that she's overextending her abilities. All that training, and she's getting tired this soon?
Hawks slashed at him with a flourish of his feathers, slicing Dabi's coat as Airi got ready to throw both hammers this time.
"Yeah, I'm getting really tired of you fighting back." Just as Airi raised the hammers to fling them, Dabi raised a hand and a jet of flame shot towards her.
Airi didn't have a chance to react, because she was shoved out of the way by her hero.
Airi rolled when she hit the ground, nearly rolling into the wall of flame if she hadn't stopped herself.
But when she looked up, her eyes widened, and her heart raced when she realized that Hawks wasn't unscathed by the fire like she had been.
His coat was burnt and smoking, and his wings smaller than they had been before the attack. His body was between her and Dabi like a shield, Airi gasping as she watched him get back to his feet.
That feeling of electricity in her veins returned, and Airi stood up with a growl.
Airi saw red. And not the red of Hawks' wings either.
Airi isn't some damsel for Hawks to save anymore, and she's not going to put up with Dabi treating her as bait!
Heart pounding in her ears and pulse quickening, Airi stood her ground as she felt like every hair on her arms stood on end, growling low in her chest with rage.
Dabi just glared back at them. "You make it too easy, hero."
Dabi shot off another jet of flame towards them, Hawks dodging around it and charging at Dabi as Airi ran the other way.
Dabi changed his path for her though, but between her and him a knight in shining armor appeared. Without her hand even moving on her sticky note.
Airi's eyes were aflame with anger as his fire vanished with her creation.
"Well look at that, did someone finally wake up?" Dabi asked mockingly but was met by Hawks slashing at him from behind.
Dabi pivoted and kicked up into the air, catching Hawks in the sternum. How was he unaffected by being slashed with a sword?!
Hawks stumbled back but didn't back down. Instead, it seemed to piss him off more.
"Why don't you learn to die like your bodyguard did? Next up will be his kids, that's gonna be fun!" That was the last straw.
Airi roared with anger at his threat against her friends and family, Dabi whirling around to face her just as fire shot off from his back. Straight for Hawks who was distracted by her.
Dabi pushed too far.
He triggered an awakening in Airi's quirk.
Just as Hawks was slammed into a building by Dabi's fire, Airi's body glowed bright white before it faded to show she had created a few things without the need of writing it down.
A pair of turbines in the middle of a set of metal wings were now attached to her back with help of a harness around her chest, lifting her off the ground as she flew at Dabi full speed.
The poor villain didn't have a chance to react.
Airi shot a wire at him from her wrist, attaching to his wrist before dragging him off into the air with her, slamming him into a nearby building as she flew top speed. Just like the man she loves always flies.
"You created wings like him?! How useless! Just because you make yourself like him doesn't mean you'll win! It just makes me want to kill him more!" Dabi roared furiously as his flames grew in intensity, shooting in the direction of her hero.
Airi swooped down and grabbed Dabi again.
This time, Airi flew up high before releasing him. Pulling her wings closed like she's watched Hawks do hundreds of times, she started to plummet back down towards him.
Airi grabbed him again on the way down, turbines of her wings flicking back on as she sped towards the ground.
Airi let Dabi go just in time to pull herself out of the dive, Dabi smacking loudly into the ground where she slammed him as she flew around to come back for another drop.
Airi flew to the left as a jet of flame shot towards her, clipping the metal of her wings but doing no damage to herself.
Her wings won't burn like Hawks' do because her turbines are what's keeping her aloft. Dabi can try to burn them as much as he wants.
Airi flew around him, trying to let him tire himself out as he shot jet after jet of flame towards her.
If it weren't such a dire situation, Airi would be telling Keigo that no wonder he flew everywhere. This was exhilarating.
Dabi was losing his patience, lashing out furiously after her. Guess he no longer wanted to keep her alive. Fine by her, she wasn't holding back against him anyways.
"THAT'S ENOUGH!"
Airi barely had time to fly clear when a whirlwind of fire erupted around the villain, eyes widening as she saw Hawks finally getting back into the fight.
Airi changed her path for him, barely reaching him in time as the fire was hot on their path.
Airi isn't the most physically strong, as proven by the many times of play wrestling with her boyfriend and losing to him. But this time she managed, grabbing him both with her wires and her arms to get him clear.
Airi was down the street with him before she even realized the fires were dying down, breathing fast with worry not for herself but the man she had just saved for once.
"Ai?" Hawks' voice was ragged, coughing a few times as she looked down at him. Setting him down, he stumbled for half a second before stretching what was left of his wings. "I love you, but please get out of here." Keigo said as he pulled another sword from his wings.
"Not a chance, I can fight him too. You said we'd make a good team, so let's prove that right now." Airi challenged him, turning away and towards the villain that was chasing after them.
"Airi- "
"No, Hawks. I'm not going to let you possibly die fighting him!" Airi snapped at him, getting ready to fly back into the fight.
"Don't think you can run from me, songbird!" Dabi shouted after her before she flew right back at him.
"Wasn't counting on it, it's you that should run!" Airi shouted back as she shot a wire at him.
Dabi barely dodged it, shooting a jet of fire at her that she dodged by flying up and around.
Coming back down, she slammed into Dabi's side and took off down the street. Away from her injured hero.
Let's hope his wings are too small to fly right now. It's her turn to fight, her turn to save him.
Airi isn't a damsel anymore.
Dabi threw a punch up at her, clipping her in the jaw as she released him and let him slam back down into the ground.
Coming down to land, she rubbed at the spot that would bruise before her turbines kicked in and she jumped back when Dabi tried to attack her again.
When Dabi pulled out another fabric to try to grab her with, she took advantage of it. The moment it wrapped around her arm; she took off into the sky.
The villain must be losing his control, because even a non-hero like her knows better than to grab onto someone that can fly.
Airi flew fast through the street, letting Dabi smash into anything she got near as he shouted angrily behind her. When she felt the fabric go loose, she realized he let go of it.
Spinning back around, she flew back at him where he landed.
"You think this is going to work?" A pair of gauntlets appeared on her hands. "Just because your quirk awakens, you think it means you're going to win?" Dabi asked as she threw a punch, exchanging blows with him as her wings kept her safe from any flame he created.
"No, I think you're going to lose because you're a monster!"
"Please, have you seen the man you sleep next to every night? That you blindly fantasize about like he's a god? He's worse than most villains!" Airi shut him up with a gauntlet to the face, but he grabbed her by the neck and pulled her with him as his hands started to heat up.
"Have you no humanity left in you? You had a family, and you turned your back on them! Instead you threaten other people's families!" Airi shouted at him as she slammed her knee up into his ribs, barely pulling away as his flames burned the front of her shirt.
"Ha! Don't make me laugh! They aren't a family to me! He only considers that half and half bastard his kid, the rest of us were left to rot! Now that scarred bastard will join that piece of shit who calls himself our father when I level him and the rest of our family!" Dabi roared angrily, and Airi suddenly realized something.
Shoto hasn't showed up. Taiki would have told Shoto where to go. Which means…
"What did you do to Shoto?!" Airi lunged at Dabi, grabbing him by the throat with her gauntlets.
Dabi laughed before flame erupted around him, pushing Airi back as her wings swung around to block her from the fire.
Airi hissed as some of them licked past her shirt, wings pulling her back away from him further.
"I didn't do anything worse than what Endeavor has done to him. Hell, our own mother did that to his face! You really think that's what a family is? Families can burn just like you and your winged hero." Airi glared furiously at him before charging back into the fight once his fires died down.
They exchanged blows once more, Airi's anger clouding her as more of his hits began to land as she tried to dodge and weave.
Dabi kicked out, catching her in the stomach before he grabbed the collar of her shirt and lifted her.
Airi's eyes widened when his evil grin split his face before he shot her away from him with his fire.
Her body ached as it slammed into a car before tumbling further down the street, metal wings screeching against the pavement until she finally came to a stop.
Her skin ached and her lunged throbbed in protest, coughing violently as she rolled to her stomach to get back up.
A boot slammed down on her back, pushing her back to the ground.
"Don't give me more reasons to kill you. I'd really like to make use of that quirk of yours, even if it means I have to waste more time breaking that fragile mind of yours." Dabi threatened as he stomped repeatedly on her back, shoving the metal of her wings into her back angrily.
Airi coughed, trying to fight back as Dabi laughed sadistically above her.
"You know, this reminds me of years ago." Dabi admitted, laughter dying down as Airi felt heat begin to seep through her turbine wings towards her back. "When I stood over your precious bird like this and burned every one of those feathers off his back. Does his scar still bother him? Does he still think about me every time he sees them?" Dabi asked mockingly, stomping more harshly on her as his flames licked across her back and earned a shout of pain.
"You were his friend once!"
"I was NEVER his friend! He was just another instrument for me to get what I want! Until he became useless to me too! I'll incinerate him like garbage, just as I'll one day do to you!"
The turbines in her wings kicked back in at last, shoving her back up off the ground and pushing Dabi back as the blades cut into his boot and legs.
"You're going to have to fight not just me but every hero that comes after you before you can even get close to that!" Airi roared angrily, stumbling for a second before standing straight, holding her head high as she glared angrily at the vengeful villain.
Just as they each took another step to keep fighting, a flourish of feathers came to her aid.
Dabi grunted as the feathers began to stab and slice at him viciously, Airi leaping in when he looked ready to burn the rest of her hero's feathers.
A hammer appeared in her hands, Airi winding her arm around before swinging it up into Dabi's stomach.
The villain went flying the moment the sparks cracked against his shirt, smashing into the side of a building. She didn't stop there.
Airi charged it up again as she went running after him.
Dabi rolled out of the way as she slammed the hammer down, the pavement cracking under the electric spark of her creation as she blocked an attack by him with one of her wings, the metal holding strong against his fire.
"You're really willing to give your life for his?!" Dabi demanded, Airi zooming back as his fires whirl winded around his body once again. "He's not worth this fight, he's- "Airi threw her hammer and it smashed into his shoulder, ending his fiery tirade.
"Hawks is always worth the fight! You would understand that if you ever knew what it meant to love someone other than yourself!" Airi shouted at him as her hammer flew back to her waiting hand.
"He doesn't even love you! He'd replace you in seconds, probably for that slutty sidekick of his! They're probably already screwing behind your back!" Dabi roared as a wave of flame shot towards her.
Airi flew up and over it, ignoring his words. "You're wrong, Hawks is loyal! He loves me as much as I love him! And he won't stop fighting for me just like I won't hesitate to fight for him now that he's helped me realize I'm strong enough to do that!" Airi admitted fiercely, not for a second believing Keigo would hurt her the way he was threatening.
Airi is going to have her doubts, she's going to worry that she's not enough. But at the end of the day, she knows Keigo loves her. He would never hurt her, and he's going to stay loyal to her!
Dabi laughed mockingly at her before she felt a surge of energy in her body, his flames licking around him menacingly.
Airi's hands aimed away from her, shooting wires into buildings on either side of the street.
"This is going to be fun then, I'm going to personally drop your charred body at his feet." Dabi warned darkly, storming towards her as she landed down on the ground.
"Sorry, but the only thing you're delivering today is yourself to Tartarus." Airi admitted, turbines kicking into full as she prepared for takeoff.
Dabi barely opened his mouth before he seemed to realize what she was about to do.
Too late.
Airi used her wires and wings to slingshot herself full speed at the villain, wings creaking in protest as they rocketed off into the sky above.
Airi continued to kick, punch and attack as fiercely as she could as they got higher into the air, Dabi's flames unable to get further than an inch from his body as they moved so fast.
"You're doing to die for him?!"
"No, I'm going to live for him!"
Airi created a hammer one more time, moving so fast as they got higher that she could barely move.
With all her strength, she smashed it up into his chest.
It sparked once before propelling the villain higher into the air and away from her.
Airi couldn't help but laugh as he shouted out, arms falling back to her sides as she lost momentum. She was going to fall, and she's not sure she has the strength to catch herself.
With surprise, Airi saw what looked like a comet rocket towards Dabi. When it smashed into him at full speed and took him off further away, she realized who it was.
Endeavor finally found his villainous son.
Her momentum came to an end, and she finally took a much-needed breath. Before she started to plummet back down towards the ground.
She did it, she fought off Dabi! She kept Keigo alive! She never would have thought she could do it!
As she plummeted faster towards the ground, she realized she was right. Her energy was finally running on empty from the lengthy fight. At least she had enough to last this long. Endeavor has it handled from here, from the looks of them shooting back down into a building across town.
Everything she created up until that point finally vanished, Airi sighing as she didn't even have the strength left to worry. Here's hoping that there's still someone left to catch her.
One last time as a Damsel. Because after this, she's no longer one. She can fight toe to toe with a murderer and walk away. Protect the Number Two hero against his demons from his past.
Protect her friends and family, anyone else who needs her if she gets out of this today.
As Airi got closer to the ground, she tried to summon up anything left of her strength. With what little she had, she created a parachute and hoped she had enough time.
Pulling the cord, it opened behind her as she got closer and closer to a possible end.
She was still coming in too fast though.
Airi was about to close her eyes when red shot from the ground towards her, clouding her vision briefly before she realized what was happening.
Of course, he'd be the one to save her one more time.
Airi was slowed and brought down to the ground with the help of Hawks' feathers and her parachute, landing a bit roughly before she heard running footsteps behind her.
"Dovie, that was fantastic!" Guess you're all caught up now.
And Hawks and Dove win! Endeavor too, with that little cameo!
Now we come full circle, to those of you who recognize that last line there. You are all caught up, it's all back where we first began. Which means...
Next chapter is the end. The final chapter.
Usually I'm sad to end stories. But... I'm kind of at peace with this one. I'm happy, for the most part...
But that fight though, Dabi pushed Airi's quirk to awaken! I know a lot of you were rooting for Hawks to kick Dabi's ass, but it was about time for Airi to show her true strength too. She's just as strong as her hero, and more than willing to defend him even against a monster like Dabi.
I'm a bit dissatisfied with the fight, however. I'm absolutely terrible at writing action scenes, I'm more a romance and adventure kind of person. Maybe one day I'll come back to fix things up, who knows.
Thank you all so much for reading! Next chapter is the last, then I got a bunch of bonus chapters that I'm probably gonna make an entirely different one-shot book for. I'll see you tomorrow for the finale!
