Chapter 26: MARY P. To rest directly into her heart. There. I brush my hands off as the final cannon sounds and a helicopter comes to retrieve Luna's limp body. I wonder what she had to go through, other than facing me. My conscience wasn't present for the games, and now, only now, it starts to kick in. I won the Hunger Games. I'll get to go home and have enough food for the Banks children and I to live comfortably. But will Michael and Jane want me around anymore? They had to watch me kill people on their screens. Watching me murder others could scar them worse than the scars I've gained throughout this. I hear cheering as another helicopter comes to get me. Gustaf announcing something stupid, as usual. Leaving the arena is all a blur. They start throwing band-aids on me and rubbing medicine across my bigger wounds. It stings a little, but I've gone through so much pain already. What's a little more? We arrive at the Capitol in good time and I'm immediately taken by doctors and nurses, all preparing different medicines before I can manage to blink. It goes by quickly before I return to my fashion designer. He dresses me up in a particularly frilly dress, which I adore, before shoving me onto stage. The interview. I almost forgot about this part. When they ask you lots of personal questions about living in the arena until you can't answer anything else and are allowed to go back. "So, Miss Poppins," the interviewer says enthusiastically, "We've noticed you're quite musical in the games. Would you be willing to sing us a little song?" I take a deep breath - inhale and exhale. This is for Michael and Jane, and everyone in the arena, whom I betrayed. Do you ever dream Or reminisce? Wondering where to find What you truly miss Well maybe all those things That you love so Are waiting in the place Where the lost things go (Lyrics from "The Place Where Lost Things Go", Mary Poppins Returns)
