Chapter 35.

=Normal POV=
[December 11; Midday]
[Hunter Isle; Town]

Hiccup taking care of the raid was an amazing sight, Toothless having a blue glow was awesome too. But somehow, Hiccup seeing the man who practically raised him to show up out of nowhere was definitely something else. It showed how close Hiccup was with this Gobber fellow by the fact Hiccup looked so stunned and just hugged the man. And Gobber, despite having come there for a reason, understood that Hiccup was overwhelmed to see him and just wanted a hug, so Gobber gave Hiccup that. Viggo and Ryker knew who Gobber was, based on Hiccup's past stories, but they also met at the dragon auction too when Gobber got Grump. Someone had let Viggo know there was a dragon rider coming in, and when Viggo spotted the hook for an arm, and peg leg; he knew who it was, but Hiccup's back had been to where Gobber flew in, so he didn't see him until Ryker and Viggo pointed it out.

Right now, Hiccup and Gobber were still in the hug. Viggo had most everyone disperse away, but he and Ryker remained for the sake of making sure everything was okay and figuring out what would be happening. The brothers had to wonder if Gobber was here to talk sense into Hiccup of having the boy return to Berk, but at the moment; it seemed Gobber was just comforting Hiccup. After a few more moments, Hiccup finally pulled away from Gobber and was grateful that he hadn't started crying during all that.

"Better now?" Gobber asked.

Hiccup nodded his head. "What are you doing here?" The teenager questioned.

Gobber rolled his eyes, hand, and hook on his hips. "Do ya really have to ask, lad?"

"Uh, yeah…I sort of sent the others back with the warning-," Hiccup started.

"Oh, never you mind with that nonsense," Gobber pushed it off with his good hand, basically saying that he didn't care. "Besides, I'm not here to attack them or drag ya back,"

"Then?" Hiccup insisted Gobber continue.

"I would like to try and understand all of this for starters," Gobber motioned around to the island, then to Viggo and Ryker. "And why you left…" Hiccup looked down a bit, then sighed. "Hiccup, it's been almost a year…I know what happened, but…Why didn't you come to me?"

"It was…Just better to leave, Gobber…You know they didn't want me there, no matter who I was to them," Hiccup said as Toothless nuzzled against Hiccup's hand.

"Regardless…I still want to know everything since you left, and I'm not leaving until I hear it all. So I hope your new friends here…" Gobber glanced at Viggo and Ryker before looking back at Hiccup. "Won't mind me being here for a day or two to speak and catch up with my unofficial son," He finished his sentence.

Hiccup looked to Viggo and Ryker. "Is it okay with you two?" Hiccup wondered.

"Of course, Hiccup. We know how much he means to you," Ryker nodded.

"And you're welcome to stay as long as you like, sir," Viggo stated.

"Appreciated, but I'm still uncertain if I can trust you two, or anyone else here yet…I came because this is where Hiccup is, and I'll go anyplace or travel any distance just to make sure he's okay," Gobber informed.

"Gobber…" Hiccup groaned a little.

"I was informed that you trust them and you are friends with the hunters, Hiccup…But remember that the last time all of us Hooligans knew of them; they were dead and had been enemies prior…I trust your word, but I would like to hear the evidence behind this…Friendship before I go making any decisions…" Gobber remarked.

"Completely understandable," Viggo agreed. "It took us some time with you too, Hiccup, as you didn't trust us right away either," He reminded.

"Yeah, I know…I'll take Gobber to the inn and get him settled as I'm sure he's not leaving right away," Hiccup said and Gobber nodded to confirm.

"Excellent, we'll leave him to you then. Shall we set you a place for lunch?" Viggo asked.

"No, no. It's okay. I'll get something for Gobber, Toothless, Grump, and myself. Thank you, though," Hiccup replied. Viggo and Ryker both nodded, and then headed off to give Hiccup and Gobber some space. "Are the others here?"

Gobber shook his head. "No, lad. Just me, but the tribe does know I'm out looking for you. All of them are heading the warning that you'll lock anyone up who comes in search of you as long as you see fit, and then remove the dragons from Berk…"

"And you decided to tempt that warning?" Hiccup mumbled a bit as Gobber walked beside Hiccup towards the inn, Grump was with them, but towards the entrance of the inn; Grump took off with Cinder and the others. "Don't worry, the dragons have their own little spot in the forest. Access to the beach, wildlife, and so on. It's only because this village isn't built for dragon support. I promise he'll be fine with Cinder, Stormfly, Hookfang, Barf, and Belch; they're only heading into the woods for lunch. During the day, they're wandering the village with Toothless and I, most of the tribe members love it," Hiccup smiled some during the explanation as to why Grump flew off after Hiccup grabbed Gobber's bags off the saddle.

"Your warning doesn't mean nothing to me, laddie. As I said, I'm not here to cause trouble or drag ya back; I just want to understand what all this is about and I barely saw you the week before you left," Gobber said.

"Are you going to tell them you found me?" Hiccup asked. "I kind of don't want dad or anyone launching some hair-brained attack on Viggo and Ryker's village…" He added.

Gobber arched a brow to Hiccup's request and sighed. "I had no intention of telling anyone where you are, lad," The man reported. "They are hell-bent on their own to find the hunters and take them down, just for the sake of them being dragon hunters,"

"Me too, no doubt," Hiccup rolled his eyes. "I'm sure they returned and said that the brothers brainwashed me and I'm working for the dragon hunters now, right?"

"Something like that, and you apparently used your pow-," Gobber started but Hiccup quickly hushed him with a few ssh sounds before looking around, then practically dragging Gobber into the inn.

"Not…Everyone here knows about my powers. Viggo, Ryker, and their ship crew do…Because I told them of my own free will. But the rest of the dragon hunter tribe who reside here don't know about my powers…I'll either show or tell them when I'm ready too…I'm just kind of…Hesitant because of what happened on Berk…" Hiccup explained when Gobber arched his brow in confusion as to why Hiccup rushed him inside the semi-large hut. It was two stories high, just had small rooms on either side of the main entry space. "Anyway, a quick rundown about this building…" Hiccup paused.

"This is the guest house or inn, Viggo and Ryker had it built for guests to the island. Some stay for a little bit, others end up staying permanently. It was inspired by other inns around the world where they've traveled or heard it. Every room has a bed, nightstand, closet, and Gronckle Iron fire ring, along with a small stash of wood. Some rooms have desks, and some are built for two, or small families. If you need more, there's some in that main space or right outside in the woodshed. There are bathrooms to use at both ends of the hallway, baths, and showers too," Hiccup went on for Gobber to get a small tour of the space. Afterward, Hiccup took him to the first room on the right of the main room. "You can stay in this room while you're here, and I'll show you around later, or tomorrow morning…"

"I appreciate that, Hiccup…But seeing where you're staying isn't why I came…" Gobber reminded.

"I know…" Hiccup sighed. "Sit down…I'll explain, but it's a long story spanning over the last eleven months…" He added. Gobber sat down on the bed, and Hiccup left the room to grab two chairs, a table, cups, plates, and utensils. Once all that was in, Hiccup left again and returned with food for them to eat while talking. Along with the food, Hiccup brought mead and water for them to share during the meal. Finally, around 12:30 pm, both males were sitting in the room at a small table. Gobber had used the time to settle in a little, as he felt he'd be here a couple of days, maybe through Snoggletog depending on the weather.

"Whenever you're ready…" Gobber invited.

Hiccup took a deep breath after the food was served, and drinks poured. "It started when my powers came out last January, the week before the wedding…" Hiccup began.

. . .

[Afternoon]
[Hunter Isle; Guest House]

It was hard for Hiccup to go through everything, but he couldn't keep secrets from Gobber. Hiccup never went into great detail, but he did tell Gobber he had been captured by Johann, who wasn't the man everyone believed he was. Hiccup brought up that he couldn't remember everything he went through with Johann, the people he worked with or for, but it was torturous and after the situation where they tried to kill Toothless; Hiccup ended up alone and on the brink of death in the water, then found by Viggo and Ryker, who decided to save him. Hiccup admitted that he didn't start to trust the brothers until after he revealed Johann as a traitor to the Grimborn brothers, who then completely backed Hiccup up in offering to help fight Johann, but only after they discovered the big plan. Hiccup stated that they did not know yet, but knew the riders only came after him because Johann said Viggo and Ryker had kidnapped him.

Gobber understood now that Hiccup went through hell after leaving Berk, but saw how Hiccup came to trust and befriend the dragon hunters. When Hiccup finished the story, he took a drink of water, and then a deep breath before exhaling. "Good Odin, lad…" Gobber sat back, still staring in shock at the story he heard.

"Yeah…That's been my last…Let's say eight months because Toothless and I were okay for about three on our own before the capture…" Hiccup stated.

"Well, I see how you trusted the hunters, and have stuck with them thus far…Remind me to thank them at some point for saving your life," Gobber mumbled, feeling like he had to now. Hiccup nodded, confirming that he would do that. "Now…Where is this place? I notice it's not like the others we've seen,"

"I'll tell you, but you can't tell anyone on Berk…Or even our allies. Viggo entrusted me with this place, and I won't risk it after what they've done for me," Hiccup mentioned.

"You know you can trust me. I'm not even going to tell them I found you, not after the nonsense I heard before I left…" Gobber muttered, rolling his eyes.

"Okay, now I need to know about all this…But, for what you asked me," Hiccup paused. "This isn't a base island, this is the Dragon Hunter Tribe's home island; Hunter Isle," He informed. Gobber blinked. "The places we knew were just the men, handling the ship and doing the hunting for the business…And before you ask; I understand that while they're killing dragons…It's for business to provide for their whole tribe, which are the people who live here.." Hiccup explained as Gobber waited for him to continue. "This place is where the women, children, and so on reside. Viggo and Ryker themselves have wives and kids; I'm actually living in the Grimborn house, on the third floor in the loft, there's a back entrance for Toothless to come up and stay with me indoors,"

"Huh…Well, not entirely out there. I knew there was a tribe, but good to know that they're just like other Viking tribes…Sort of. I still don't agree with the dragon hunting," Gobber said.

"Neither do I, but I think they're coming around to understanding it doesn't have to be this way. A lot of the tribe don't want to fight dragons, and yes the business takes care of them, but I think it's just because they've been using it to survive for so long," Hiccup shrugged.

"I guess that makes sense," Gobber sighed some.

"Another problem is that this island still suffers raids, Gobber, and you know from experience on Berk that we had to fight to live," Hiccup told him. "I was asked to help them figure out what's causing the attacks, we haven't had much luck. I don't think there's another Red Death, or nest with reigning leader or whatever. Regardless, Ryker told me a while back that he believed in my abilities, and so did Viggo, so they think I have the power to change their minds about hunting dragons. You know this is kind of my thing…And like I said, the Grimborn brothers and their hunters on the ships know about my difference, and they agree with you and Gothi that my father never should have made me suppress things…They accept me, something Berk didn't do…" He looked down a little.

"Hiccup, I tried to be there for you after that day you physically pushed the riders away," Gobber said as I looked at him softly. "Your father wouldn't let me near you, said I could in the morning, but you were already gone,"

"What reason did I have to stay in a place I wasn't wanted. I know by you, but what about the rest? I heard dad say that they didn't want me there anymore, and wouldn't follow me if I became chief…I had nothing left. It was no different than the day everyone learned I befriended Toothless when I was abandoned by the tribe. The difference is that Astrid is the one who got me to keep fighting. To protect the tribe despite them leaving me behind. To save my best friend…Astrid rallied the riders for me, I taught them how to earn trust and ride; we stopped Red Death, created peace…Things were great for a couple of years…And here we are again, only this time…" Hiccup paused. "The tribe abandoned me, Gobber. The people I thought were my friends, walked away and said all we were was the riders, we worked together and that was it. Astrid broke our engagement, the night before the wedding. She broke up with me, said we couldn't be friends, just teammates when missions took place…"

"Hiccup…" Gobber said gently.

"Even dad walked away. I didn't see him stand up and tell everyone I had these abilities since I was little, that he forced me to hide them and keep my emotions controlled. I didn't see him coming to comfort me when everything happened," Hiccup continued, not wanting to break and cry. Gobber could see the tears beginning to form, though. "It's always you, Gobber. You're the one who has been watching over, teaching and comforting me for as long as I can remember. Even you who ignored the warning I sent back to come to make sure I was okay and find out the truth…And where is everyone else? Overjoyed that I'm gone and probably calling me a traitor,"

"Of course I came for you, why did you think I wouldn't? I knew you were hurt, but I had no idea where you were or I would have come a lot sooner. It was Heather, Dagur, and Fishlegs who told me what happened with your encounter and why you took some of the dragons from the riders. The other four went straight to your dad and spouted off all this nonsense about you being a traitor, and that you used your powers against them," Gobber remarked calmly.

"In self-defense only, they attacked me first," Hiccup defended quickly.

"Easy, son…I know. Like I said…The Berserker siblings and Fishlegs told me the truth, in secret. I didn't want the others hearing, and I'm the one who decided I would come to see you to get the story from you directly," Gobber said.

"I know…I know…I'm sorry, but the whole thing kind of irritates and hurts me at the same time…" Hiccup muttered, then sighed. "You know I'm not coming back, right?"

"I wish you were, but yes…I suspected that would be the case," Gobber replied. "You're the heir of Berk, Hiccup…Everyone knows they messed up when we couldn't find you anywhere…Your father had searches going from your nineteenth birthday, and all through until June or so,"

"Well, April to June, I was captured with Johann. February to April, I was evading being found," Hiccup informed. "Let me guess, he figured I just needed time to myself?"

"Something like that. There were two assumptions, that one you said, and then maybe you went off to learn how to work with your powers safely…And would return after to show everyone you could control them," Gobber shrugged.

"I didn't want to be where I wasn't wanted, and I did work with them a bit…" Hiccup admitted. "Seems I have some control when I'm not scared…All those situations on Berk were being thrown into scary spots, but when I defended myself against the riders; I wasn't afraid, just…I don't know…Determined and angry that Astrid voted herself the new leader of the riders and wanted to take Toothless, then forcing their dragons to attack…" He told his friend and basically his father.

"I know, son. I was told everything, and it's good you have some semblance of control…More practice and you can probably do a lot more," Gobber smiled a bit.

"I know…Viggo and Ryker said the same thing and offered to help. The whole crew did, but I haven't shown the entire tribe yet. Fear of a repeat, I guess. Viggo and Ryker told me there was nothing to be afraid of and their tribe wouldn't mind at all because they all know what it's like to embrace yourself. Viggo told me something specific before we arrived that's making me wonder if I should just get it over with," Hiccup said.

"What did he tell you?" Gobber asked.

"I was born different, not just my powers as they didn't come to appear until I was three or so, but just, in general, being different…However, Viggo asked me this; why are you trying so hard to fit in, when you were born to stand out. I didn't have an answer for him, and then he told me not to forget that my difference makes me unique; smart, skilled, and gifted, so I should embrace it and know that the people who want to be in my life will always-," Hiccup started.

"Accept, support, and love you," Gobber and Hiccup said together.

"And for him saying that they have my trust. I can't say, friends…But I trust you're safe with them, and they aren't going to betray you," Gobber told me. "I won't tell the tribe that when I return, to save trouble on them trying to attack. As far as they'll know; I never found you and decided to come back when I reached the Southern Boundary of the Archipelago waters," He winked.

Hiccup smiled. "Thanks, Gobber…" He said.

"You're welcome, laddie," Gobber nodded.

"Now…Tell me all about what happened when you said you were coming to find me?" Hiccup asked. Gobber laughed.

"After we take a walk, I'm stiff sitting here. Maybe you can introduce me to a few people?" Gobber hoped.

"Sure can. Should we talk over dinner then?" Hiccup suggested.

"Sounds good to me," Gobber agreed.

After that, Hiccup and Gobber both got up and cleaned the area before heading outside. Right now, Hiccup was happier than he had been in a while, and to think having Toothless back along with now getting to see Gobber made the difference next to being friends with the dragon hunters. Hiccup knew the feeling wouldn't last because everything always came back, and it was hard to deal with, but for now; he could enjoy this feeling while it was with him.
