Find us on insta at foodfornerdspodcast… you can listen to us on all major platforms including spotify, apple, and google podcasts.
This chapter actually isn't based off of a new song but off of a previous chapter of this story. This is based off of Chapter 10 which was rooted in Katy Perry's song "Waking Up in Vegas." A summary of that chapter (if you didn't read it) is that Kurt and Blaine met in college and were roommates and they go off before graduation with friends to have a huge celebration and end up getting married one night while drunk. That one-shot ended with them realizing they'd have to somehow tell their I parents what happened. This chapter is that story. Rating is T for obvious mentions of partying, drinking etc.
"Are you okay?" Kurt took his husband's hand and gave it a light squeeze.
"I think I'm going to throw up or pass out… or maybe both." Blaine gave a weak smile. "I feel like your dad's going to kill me." Blaine had met Burt Hummel a few times over the last 4 years. He had come home for holidays with Kurt before since his parents were often preoccupied and not even in the country. The first time he had met the older Hummel was when Kurt had moved into their dorm. Burt had taken one look at his sparsely decorated side of the dorm room and huffed. It took only that first weekend for Blaine and Kurt to become fast friends and Burt to warm up to the curly-haired tenor. "I had always hoped I'd get to talk to him as a boyfriend first, ya know?"
Kurt just laughed. "I mean, he's going to be shocked and probably a little more than disappointed in me." He smiled lightly. "But he already loves you and we made this choice together. I think he's going to be thrilled that we're trying to be responsible. Plus, he may or may not already know that I've always been a little.. smitten with you."
"How do you always know just what to say?" Blaine placed a feather-light kiss to his husband's lips before they stepped through the door.
"Kurt!" Carole's excited voice drifted through the house. "And Blaine! What a surprise! I didn't know you two were in town this weekend!" Blaine flinches slightly out of instinct. He still wasn't quite used to the loud personality of Kurt's family. He gulped internally; he wasn't used to the loud nature of his in-laws. Boy, was this about to be an awkward dinner. "Burt!" Carole shouted out, ushering both of them into the living room. "Kurt's home! He brought Blaine with him!" Kurt reaches over while Carole is preoccupied for the moment and gives Blaine's hand another quick squeeze of encouragement.
"is there a reason for this unexpected visit?" Burt comes out of the kitchen drying his hands on his jeans before enveloping his son in a hug and giving Blaine a firm handshake.
"Well we ha—" Kurt begins but Blaine cuts him off.
"We were just int own for something with my family and thought we'd drop by before we catch a flight back to New York!" Blaine grins and tries to communicate with his husband using his eyes that standing in the doorway of the Hummel-Hudson home isn't exactly the way he wanted to make their announcement. Kurt just smiles and shrugs before saying, "do you need help in the kitchen, Carole?" Just like that Blaine is alone with Burt, shrugging off his loafers and padding lightly into the living room to watch whatever train wreck of a college football game is sure to be on the TV.
"How has school been, Blaine?" Burt could feel the obvious tension in the room and opted for some safe conversation o hopefully make the boy feel more at peace.
"Good. We each only have a few finals left before we're officially done. But, then there are a few loose ends especially for performance majors to tie up before actual graduation. I'm not worried about it though."
"How was that trip a few weeks back? The one to Vegas with all your buddies? A last good hurrah is always nice before you really have to settle down as an adult." Blaine tensed immediately at the mention of the trip. He wasn't ready for that topic of conversation.
"It uh—well-we uhm—it was fun?" Blaine winced at his own voice.
Burt simply laughed. "I get it. You guys don't' feel comfortable talking about parties with your parents. Just remember, whatever you two did I'm sure I've done worse in my time."
Sure, Blaine thought to himself with a grin that he hoped didn't look more like a grimace. I'm sure you've done worse than accidentally marrying your best friend, but then deciding it was a good idea to not only stay married but come tell your families. Because I don't think you've done worse than that.
"You okay?" Blaine was snapped out of his spiraling thoughts by the question. He just nodded, again trying to smile and pretend that everything was fine. Burt didn't seem convinced but was interrupted before he could ask any more questions by Kurt and Carole calling them both in for dinner.
It was when the apple pie was out of the fridge and on everyone's plate that Burt finally decided to break the tension in the room. "I supposed you guys are only so quiet because you've finally decided to make a move on my son?" He turned his attention to Blaine who had completely paled and all but dropped his fork onto the table.
"Why—uhm—why would you think that?" Blaine's voice was soft an unsure and a slight blush has colored his cheeks.
Burt just raised an eyebrow. "Besides that reaction?" He questioned. "You've always felt at home here, Blaine. But from the moment you walked in the door today you've just been completely off. So, what's going on? Kurt?" Burt turned slightly toward his son who had reached over to place his hand over Blaine's on the table.
"Well…" Kurt stated as he linked his fingers with Blaine's. "We actually have a little bit more good news than just that we're dating. "He paused before taking a deep breath and looking his father straight in the eyes. "We may have decided to take our relationship further while we were in Vegas."
"What?" "Omigod! Carole's excited squeal and Burt's confused question came at the same moment, causing Blaine to shrink back in his seat.
"You mean?" Carole questioned looking hopefully at Kurt who simply nodded while Burt was still starring at the two confusedly.
"What do you mean by 'next level,' Kurt?" Silence filled the room immediately following the question and Carole excused herself, giving both boy's a reassuring squeeze on their shoulders before taking the empty pie plates to wash in the kitchen.
"What do you boys mean by that?" Burt questioned again, looking grimly at Blaine in particular. The two boys exchanged glances, Kurt willing Blaine with his eyes to take over the conversation. He couldn't bear to possibly disappoint his father.
"Mr. Hummel, I want you to know that I really love Kurt." Blaine smiled, the last few weeks since they had gotten back from Vegas had been difficult but he could say with certainty that he loved Kurt and he had loved him for a very long time. He had no regrets in their decision to stay married and he wanted to convey that to his father-in-law.
"Before you finish listening to Blaine I also wanted to let you know that I also really love him and that he makes me so ridiculously happy."
"So, I uhm—well we—decided that we wanted to show our love to the world so we—we—we—uhm—we got married?" He didn't mean to phrase it as a question but it came out that way.
Burt looked between the two of them, pressing his palms into his eyes. "Really?"
"Really," Kurt nodded.
"I didn't even know you two were seeing each other." The two blushed and looked at each other with slight awkwardness. "I mean, it's always been obvious you two liked each other, but you kept your relationship a secret from us and now you're married?"
"Dad, I just need you to understand that Blaine and I have loved each other, really loved each other, for the last four years. He's always there for me, he takes care of me, he makes sure I have what I need… and I do the same for him. But, we didn't' always define ourselves with the traditional labels of a relationship. We just thought that it was right."
Burt smiled a bit and then went back to his stony expression, looking at Blaine. "Why didn't you define your relationship with my son? Were you embarrassed of him or did you want to have something with other guys on the side?"
"Dad!" Kurt begged. "It wasn't like that!"
"It wasn't? Kurt…"
"It really wasn't, Mr. Hummel. I love, Kurt, more than anything in my life. I promise that it wasn't anything like you're thinking."
"Explain it to me, then." Burt looked at both boys. "I just want to understand why you hid your relationship and why you had to go to Vegas to get married."
Kurt just sighed, finally giving in. He hadn't wanted to spill their dirty laundry in front of his father, but if it saved him and Blaine a harsh interrogation he'd do it. "Dad, we just—we didn't—we—" he sighed again. "We went to Vegas as just friends, but who wanted to be more but we didn't know that the other one wanted that. You're going to be disappointed in me, but we may be were partying a little too hard and then—"
"You got married?"
Blaine took over. "Yes. When we woke up the next day we talked and we know that we love each other and maybe this wasn't conventional but we've spent the last few weeks together as a married couple, and we just—this was—this was right…"
In a turn of events, neither boy expected Burt simply laughed and got up to give both of them a hug. He continued to laugh until he had to explain the story to Carole who simply giggled along with him.
Years later Burt would tell the story of that first interaction at their second child's baby shower. "I wasn't happy at first," he would explain. "But there is nothing more right than Kurt and Blaine's love for each other and I am so excited to be a grandfather for the second time."
A/N: I'm so sorry this chapter took so long. My husband and I are trying to buy a house and life is being crazy. I'm going to continue to write these chapters as I can, but expect chapters to have longer upload times than when I first started. But, I am going to continue it as time allows. Also if you have any ideas you'd like to see written PM me. I can't' check messages often but if you send an idea I'll be happy to fulfil those prompts if they excite me and again, time allows.
