I hope everyone is staying safe. I am so sorry this has taken so long to get out. Since school closed up in March I've been busy making masks and just haven't had much time to write. I think there will be only one more chapter and then look out for a new story in the next week. Thank you for following my first every FanFiction. Don't forget to review ! ! Thank you again ! !
Chapter 26
In the last six weeks, Jamie and Eddie worked tirelessly to get the twins on a schedule. Eddie was exhausted because of the lack of sleep from breastfeeding and pumping. Jamie did as much as he could to help her but it just never seemed to make a difference. After 3 weeks, and a long talk with Katie, they made the decision to feed using formula for a few of the feedings a day. Katie told them she dealt with exhaustion and depression after her boys and once they started to add formula, it helped her to start feeling better. Two weeks into adding formula for the twins, Eddie has been less tired and less stressed.
"I can't believe I have to leave these two tomorrow." Jamie told Eddie while they were feeding the babies.
"Are you ready for your first day at the 2-9?" Eddie asked. "That house is a zoo."
"Yeah, I think so, I have to meet with Captain Espinoza a half hour before tour.
"I don't know how I'm going to handle these two without you." Eddie admitted.
"You'll be fine, we have their routines down and you know who's coming to help."
"I know, but we're a team and I'm going to miss that." Eddie started to sob.
"Hey, hey, we've been a team for almost 7 years now, that will never change." Jamie comforted her wrapping one arm around her. "But we now have a new normal and it starts with me going back to work tomorrow."
"I know all of that, I just . . . I'm going to miss having you here all the time."
"I'm going to miss being here because I won't get to see you orthem or hold them during the day." Jamie sighed.
"I'll send you lots of pictures." Eddie smiled leaning on his shoulder.
"Good." Jamie whispered, looking at Charlie sleeping in his arms. "I think it's time to put these guys to bed."
"I agree." Eddie replied back. "When I'm done with them, I'll tuck you in."
"Oh really?"
"Yep."
"I like the sound of that. I love night time cuddles with you." Jamie told her, helping her off the couch with Joey.
The next morning was tough. Jamie got up early to shower and help Eddie with the twins. By the time he got out of the shower Eddie was breastfeeding Charlie.
"Good Morning, how are my girls this morning?" Jamie smiled leaning down to give them both a kiss.
"Hungry" Eddie laughed, looking down at their daughter.
"I thought I heard her screaming."
"Yep."
"Do you want me to make you an egg sandwich before I go?" Jamie asked.
"No, but can you bring me some toast and pineapple juice? I'll make a sandwich after I get these two situated for the morning."
"OK, I'm going to check on Joey first." Jamie went in to check on his sleeping son. As he walked in, the smell in the room overwhelmed him.
"Woah, Joey, what in the world did you do?" Jamie made a face walking over to the crib. As he looked into the crib he found Joey lying quietly kicking his little feet.
"Hey little man, what happened?" Jamie asked, smiling at his son. Joey smiled and kicked his feet more hearing his Dad's voice. Jamie unsnapped his pajamas and revealed the poop explosion.
"UGH, Joey, you are a mess. We need to get you into the bathroom and get you cleaned up."
"What's going on in here?" Eddie asked, bringing Charlie back into the nursery, her nose wrinkled up at the smell.
"It seems our little man here wanted to give us a surprise this morning." Jamie picked him up out of the crib to show Eddie what happened.
"Eww, that's gross. Go clean up your son, I'll clean up the crib."
"My son ?" Jamie questioned quizzically. "Why is he only my son when he makes a mess?"
"Because MY son would never do that to me." Eddie teased.
After cleaning up Joey, Jamie had to leave for work.
"I have to go, I can't be late for my meeting with Captain Espinoza. Are you good to clean up the rest?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Pop will be here in an hour and I'll clean everything up while he's entertaining the twins." Eddie told him.
"I love you, Eddie. I'll see you later. Give them lots of hugs and kisses from me." Jamie leaned down to kiss Eddie before rushing out the door.
Traffic was slow and Jamie was five minutes late for his meeting with Captain Espinoza. Jamie knocked on the door frame before entering the office.
"You're late ! This is not the way to make a first impression. I hope you're not going to make a habit of this. " Espinoza barked.
"I'm sorry. No sir, I don't plan on it." Jamie started. "My son woke up with poop everywhere this morning. I was cleaning him up while my wife took care of our daughter."
Espinoza chuckled, "Say no more, I remember those days. So how's life as a new Dad?"
"It's amazing but very exhausting. Life is never boring with twins." Jamie relaxed.
"Just wait until they start crawling and walking. I thought one was tough but you're going to be chasing around two."
"Honestly, I'm looking forward to it. I love holding them but can't wait to see them grow into their personalities." Jamie told him.
"You may regret that." Espinoza laughed. "OK, let's get down to business. "It's time to put the fear of God in these guys."
Jamie's first day was long and exhausting. The officers there were cocky and secretive. He didn't know if they were acting like this because he was a Reagan or if these guys never had any structure in their previous command. He had a lot of work ahead of him. His bright spots of the day were the pictures Eddie was sending him throughout the day. It made the day easier to bear.
"Hey, I'm home." Jamie called walking in at 6 that night.
"I'll be right down." Eddie called. Jamie walked over to Joey who was sleeping in the swing and watched him sleep.
"How was your first day ?" Eddie asked, giving Jamie a hug and a kiss. "You take Charlie and I'll get dinner out.
"How did you have time to make dinner?" Jamie asked.
"Pop stayed a little later and made dinner. He left us most of it and took the rest home for him and your Dad." Eddie said. "Why would you think I wouldn't have time to make dinner?
"I just figured this being the first day getting used to our new routine you wouldn't have a chance." Jamie replied quickly.
"Oh really." Eddie laughed. "Well, we did a good job with their routines. If they stick to how good they were today, I'll be able to make dinner during their late afternoon nap."
That night they discussed Jamie's first day on the job and fed the twins together in bed. Joey was finished first so Jamie laid him on the bed between them while Charlie finished up. A few minutes later Eddie looked over and Jamie and Joey were sound asleep. Joey was curled up next to Jamie's chest with his father's protective arm around him. A huge smile spread across Eddie's face seeing her sleeping boys. She grabbed her phone off the nightstand and snapped a picture.
The next month continued with Jamie off on Wednesdays and Sundays. Pop, Nikki, and Sean helped out during the week and Erin helped on Saturdays. One Wednesday at the end of June, a week or so before Eddie was scheduled to go back to work, Eddie got a phone call from Lieutenant Lee, her new boss in the Investigative Support Unit.
"Jamie, Lieutenant Lee just called, she needs me to go in and help make decisions on the setup of the unit." Eddie explained.
"When do you need to go ? Jamie asked.
"I need to be there in an hour and she said I should expect to be there for a couple hours."
"Ok, well it's 10 now, do you want me to make you lunch to take with you?
"That sounds good. Oh, and can you make me some coffee? Eddie asked.
"You got it."
Eddie came down ten minutes later dressed and her hair pulled up in a much neater bun than it had been in. Jamie had her lunch ready and was just finishing with her coffee.
"You should call Pop and see if he can come over while I'm gone." Eddie told him, grabbing her things.
"He has his RDNY lunch today."
"How about Nikki?"
"Nikki and Sean work Wednesdays, remember ?"
"Oh yeah, what was I thinking?" she laughed. "Are you sure you're going to be OK with them?"
"I'll be fine, I'm sure it will be a little challenging but I'm their Dad, I want to be able to take care of them myself." Jamie tried to reassure her. "Are you sure you're OK with leaving them?"
"No, but I am going back to work in about 2 weeks so . . ." Eddie took a deep breath, "I have to do it." Jamie wrapped his arms around her and gave her a kiss.
"You need to leave or you're going to be late."
"I don't want to leave." Eddie frowned and gave the sleeping babies kisses.
"I understand how you feel, that's how I felt last month when I went back." Jamie admitted. "I didn't want to leave you or the babies."
"How did you do it?"
"I just kept telling myself that I would see you and the twins after tour and of course the pictures you sent me kept me going." Jamie smiled. Eddie gave the babies another kiss and walked towards the door.
"Will you send me pictures ?"
"Of course." Jamie assured her. She gave him one more kiss and walked out the door.
Eddie had tears in her eyes by the time she got into her car. She actually had the chance to drive her Porsche today since she needed to leave the SUV with Jamie. This was the longest Eddie had been away from the twins since they were born 10 weeks ago. She sat in the parking lot and touched up her make-up hoping that her boss wouldn't realize she had been crying most of the way.
Eddie took a deep breath walking into the 2-9 for the first time.
"Hi, I'm Sgt. Eddie Reagan, I'm looking for Lieutenant Lee."
"Hi, your Jamie's wife, correct ?"
"Yes."
"Elijah Townes, desk Sergeant, nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you as well. So, where can I find Lieutenant Lee ?"
"Oh, she's upstairs in the new unit."
"Thanks."
As Eddie made her way upstairs she noticed the precinct's detective squad was located in the front of the second floor, the back was now the new Investigative Support Unit.
As she walked into the new office, she saw a tall thin woman probably in her mid to late 40's and,a tall man in his late 40's early 50's, both in uniform talking with a few workers
"Lt. Lee ?" Eddie questioned approaching the group.
"Yes." The woman responded.
"Hi, I'm Sgt. Eddie Reagan."
"Nice to finally meet you." She smiled. "This is Captain Craig Rogers, he will be running the new unit.
"Nice to meet you, Sir."
"Reagan ? Any relation to the Commissioner?" He asked.
"Yes, he's my father-in-law."
"He's a good man, he helped me a lot as a rookie detective. He was my CO in the 6-5 for a few months before being named Chief of Departments."
"He is." Eddie agreed.
"So, I hear you are a rookie Sergeant coming off of maternity leave when the unit officially gets off the ground." Lt. Rogers asked.
"Yes, Jamie and I have 10 week old twins." Eddie told him as her phone beeped. Eddie glanced down and saw Jamie had sent a picture. Eddie opened her message to see Jamie had sent her a selfie with the twins together laying on his arm. Joey was sleeping and Charlie was still awake. She smiled and showed both Capt. Rogers and Lt. Lee.
They shared stories of their children in between making decisions about the new unit and recommendations for new staff members. Eddie recommended Gina Thompson and Shawn Tanketti, who she worked with when she was at the 2-2 and Kara.
"She's been on patrol for 7 years. I've worked with her and Kara has a very strong work ethic and good insight."
"Thank you for your insight, Sgt., I will get in touch with Officer Walsh's CO, and see what he thinks." Capt. Rogers started. "We also will have three officers on medical leave and two pregnant officers who will be joining us."
"That's great, we'll be able to help out many different precincts."
"That's the hope." Captain Rogers stated. "We're going to start with the detectives here at the 2-9 and we're getting a stack of cold cases sent over to work on. We'll also be on call for any big cases that need support.
Eddie arrived back home about 3 pm, as she walked into the house she found it eerily quiet. She could smell her favorite, French Onion Soup, cooking in the crock pot but there was nothing else going on. As she walked into the living room she found several bottles on the coffee table as well as a package of wipes, one of Charlie's onesies, and several toys. There was a blanket on the floor with more toys. Joey was asleep in the pack N play and on the couch was Jamie sleeping on his side facing the back of the couch with Charlie in his arms. Tears filled Eddie's eyes at the beautiful sight of Charlie's little body in her father's arms. Eddie grabbed her phone, as she was getting ready to take a picture Charlie stretched her arms and legs straight out before curling right back into Jamie. Eddie took the picture then straightened up the living room. When she was finished, she grabbed the monitor and headed up to their bedroom, as long as everyone was sleeping, she was going to take a nap too. Eddie was just getting comfortable in bed when Jamie walked in.
"Why didn't you wake me up when you got home?" Jamie asked, getting into bed.
"You and Charlie looked so cute together, I didn't want to disturb you." Eddie told him. "Where's Charlie?"
"With Joe in the Pack N Play." Jamie said curling up to Eddie and wrapping his arms around her.
"Good, how long do you think we have?" Eddie asked, turning over to face Jamie.
"Probably an hour to an hour and a half."
"Sounds good to me." Eddie smiled and leaned up to give him a loving kiss before curling into his side. Both tired parents were asleep within minutes.
