Somehow Paul managed to survive the rest of the week after it felt like work was falling apart but it was now Saturday and he could mostly relax.
His parents had dropped off the food yesterday and Jess wasn't due until late afternoon so he had the morning to relax and do nothing and then he had to organise things after lunch.
Walking in to the lounge after having a long shower he sat down beside Stephanie. "So I was thinking. I know you have to plan funerals about your parents but I was thinking maybe you could learn about them. Saying that, I have had Jess put together some information that I have put on an iPad for you to read whenever you want and as many times as you want."
"Really? Why would you do that for me?"
"Why wouldn't I? You need to know your parents to plan their funeral so this is the first step for you. Just sit here and relax, you don't need to worry about the iPad today if you don't want to." He decided to give her a minute alone to think so got up and went to retrieve a drink.
It took her a moment but after a short while she opened the iPad and turned it on to see what she could find. The first thing that she noticed was that the background picture was of her with two older people, were they her parents?
She didn't get further than looking at the background picture before Paul returned with a drink and placed it on the coffee table in front of her. "Whatcha looking at?"
"There's a picture here of me with two people, I don't know who they are but it is a nice touch to make it the background."
"Oh right, that. Jess found it online apparently and she thought it would be nice for you to put faces to the names of your parents."
"My . . . parents?" She didn't know how she thought they would be but that wasn't entirely it.
Maybe it was a bad idea to give her the iPad before Jess came over. "Yeah. I don't know all of the details that are on the iPad because Jess didn't give me the full ones, just the basics."
She wasn't sure how she felt about not knowing exactly who they were. Opening up the gallery she noticed that there were a lot of pictures, some of just her and some with other people in, including the two older people that she had seen. Opening up one of the pictures she noticed that it had some sort of title to it, reading it carefully she saw 'Vince and Linda McMahon (your parents)', those were her parents, she knew what they looked like now. Closing out that picture she went back to look at more of the pictures.
Leaving Stephanie with the iPad he went to clean up and make sure that he hadn't forgotten anything in terms of food and drinks.
An hour later he returned to the lounge with a cheese sandwich. "Lunch is served. Care to put the iPad down and eat?"
"It says my parents own, I mean owned a company. What happened to the company?"
He noticed that she was still holding on to the iPad tightly so he took it from her and replaced it with the plate her sandwich was on. "Eat."
She wanted to keep reading though, there were so many questions that she had about everything. "I'll eat in a minute; I just need to finish reading something."
"Yeah nope. You will eat now and if you're a good girl I will give it back once you are done. Steph I know you want to know things about your life and your parents but may I suggest that you do it slowly otherwise your brain might explode."
"Pfft, that doesn't happen." Rolling her eyes she played it off like she was annoyed but truthfully she didn't want him to know that her brain literally felt like it was about to explode, it hurt so much but she didn't want to stop reading.
Maybe it didn't literally happen but it did in the figurative sense and that would happen to her. "Oh be quiet and eat your sandwich."
Giggling at his comeback she chose to eat her sandwich in favour of continuing to argue as she was unlikely to get it back until he gave it to her.
By the time she had finished her lunch Stephanie forgot the iPad so she was easily distracted by the television whilst Paul finished the preparations he had started.
Bella stared at her girlfriend as she pulled lemon and raspberry sorbet from the shopping bags. "Why? . . . I mean not to sound rude but why do you have ice cream?"
With one eye on her girlfriend she grabbed the ice cream off the side to throw straight in the freezer. "When Stephanie was newly out of the coma I promised her that when she was out of hospital I would get her some new ice cream flavours for her to try. As we are going over there for dinner and to hang out I thought it was the right time to grab her some, that and she could probably use the ability to drown herself in ice cream."
"Wait, she doesn't remember anything?! Like not even the food she likes or doesn't like?"
"Bingo. It is actually depressing how much she doesn't know about herself."
Bella got up from her seat suddenly feeling inspired. "Well we need to give her a fun care package so that she can explore things and have fun."
The excitement in her girlfriend's voice both concerned and excited Jess. "Do I even want to ask?"
"It'll be fine, don't worry. I will be back in a bit." She didn't even wait for a response from her girlfriend; she just gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and headed for the door grabbing her car keys off the side as she went.
A couple of hours later and they were stood outside of Paul's house each holding a bag. "Are we sure about this? It won't be too much for her will it?"
"Nah." Jess reached for her girlfriend's hand and held it tightly. "If Paul thought that it would be too much then he wouldn't have invited us over."
Paul was busy getting the finishing touches put together when the doorbell rang so hopefully that was Jess and not a door-to-door salesman. "Hello ladies." It was then he noticed all of the bags. "Dare I ask what is going on?"
"You can ask but we aren't going to tell you, it is all for Stephanie. So where is she?"
"In the lounge. Just come in and make yourselves at home." Paul thought that his friend was going to just walk straight past him but she surprised him by stopping and hugging him.
"Once we've shown Steph the food I'll give you a hand in the kitchen if you need it."
Arabella also stopped to hug him as she entered the house. "Whilst Jess is helping in the kitchen I will stay with Stephanie so that you don't need to worry about her."
"Thanks Bella." Shutting the door he took a deep breath before he followed them both to where Stephanie was sitting.
Stephanie heard the commotion at the door but didn't think much of it as Paul had been muttered something about visitors as he left the room. She heard somebody coming before she saw them as there was a constant rustling as they walked so she looked towards the door to see if they entered the room or not.
"Hey Steph. I come with a gift." She moved closer but not right beside her as the ice cream was cold and she didn't want to wait too much longer to get it in the freezer.
"Gift? It's not my birthday is it?"
Jess moved the coffee table a little closer so that she could put her bag down and then she began to remove the contests. "It isn't your birthday but I did promise you when you were in hospital that I would share more ice cream flavours with you so I bring you three new ice cream flavours for you to try. Last time you had ice cream it was regular ice cream and this time I have brought you sorbet ice cream. I thought that you would like to try lemon, mango and raspberry flavours."
That sounded utterly delicious but she didn't know the difference with sorbet. "What is sorbet?"
Giving her girlfriend a panicked look she shrugged her shoulders. "I actually don't know."
Paul couldn't help but roll his eyes at his friend; of course she didn't actually know what she had bought. "Regular ice cream is made with dairy products for the most part and sorbet ice cream basically isn't so it is okay for those with a lactose intolerance."
"Well yeah but they have really nice flavours so nobody should knock it. I should get these in the freezer though before they melt and then they're no good. Is there anything I can help you with Paul?"
With her girlfriend and Paul leaving the room Bella took a seat beside Stephanie. "So I was talking to Jess and she said that you don't know what food you like or anything and an idea hit me. I hope you don't mind but I have put together a little care package for you to enjoy."
Stephanie took the bag and began to dig through it. "So what is it?"
"Paul will probably kill me for this but there are a few different types of cookies and cakes but there is also some fruit so hopefully that cancels out all of the junk food I got you."
The two women shared a laugh as Stephanie kept searching through the bag looking to see what was in there.
Once they were alone in the kitchen Paul took the ice cream from Jess. "Thanks for this; I'm sure she'll love trying it all."
"My pleasure. I thought she deserved a treat because if you chose to give her the iPad it would be a lot with the information about her parent's bodies being released." She could see the stress on her friend's face but she didn't know how to approach it with him so chose to open the door and let him decide if he walked through it.
"About that, I think she would appreciate it if you could spare some time later to answer a few questions for her and explain some things to her because she knows so little talking to somebody who does have that knowledge will hopefully clear things up for her."
It was like Jess had a purpose for being here other than just driving Paul crazy. After spending more hours than a sane person would have willingly done on the project solo she was eager to share every single ounce of knowledge that she had learned, especially if it ultimately helped Stephanie in the long run. "Now that is the kind of job I am down for."
"I thought the kind of job you're down for was the kind of job that involved doing no work at all."
Grabbing a bread roll off the side Jess threw it at his head. "Fuck off Paul."
Catching the roll before it hit him he placed it down on the side. "No throwing food thank you very much."
Jess just laughed and threw another at him before they actually got on with organising food.
After dinner they all sat around talking for a little bit before Jess decided now was the time to approach what she had learned and put on to the iPad for her. Picking up the iPad she opened up the pictures curious to see what she had been looking at. "You make such a lovely family don't you?"
"Family?!"
"Yes family. This is your parents, or well you with them and I am pretty sure that there is a picture floating around somewhere on the iPad that has your brother in also."
If she stared at the picture close enough she could see a resemblance between her and them. "Are you sure that's true and they're not like my Aunt and Uncle or something?"
"I am absolutely positive that it is your parents. I did a lot of research online and spoke to a guy who works, or well I guess it would be worked, for them so I know it is them as he sent me the corporate pictures of them both."
Looking at pictures and information was one thing but she sounded knowledgeable and conversation was going to be easier for her to digest right now. "So they worked for a company somewhere? What did they do?"
That was a loaded question and Jess was hesitant to outright talk about what she knew as the idea of the iPad was she could digest small bits at a time when she felt up to it and this was going to be one bit lot of information at once.
There was only so long that they could keep this sort of information away from her because as she learned more about her family then this was things that she would find out. "They actually own a company, well owned I guess."
"What happened to it?"
Paul wasn't sure whether the conversation should continue so butt in. "I think we should stop this conversation here. Steph, there is only so much information we should give to you at any one time, I was told not to bombard you so that your brain had time to digest it all. Well that was the gist of the fancy words they said to me."
She was going to argue with him but he was so good to her that it just wasn't fair to him so the subject was changed and nothing more was said about it for the rest of the time that they had visitors.
After a few hours Jess and Arabella left and Paul went about finishing cleaning up whilst Stephanie rested.
Once he had finished the cleaning he returned to the lounge collapsing on the couch beside her. "So was it too much having Jess and Bella around for a few hours?"
"It was tiring but I did like having them around so no? I am sure that I will pay for it tomorrow but I won't complain." It took her brain a few moments before key words came back to her but made no sense. "Job, truth, my parents. I don't know what these words mean but my brain is speaking them."
Fuck, she was somewhat retaining random words and now he was in shit street. What did he say to her? "I'm scared to admit the truth because I don't want to actually blow your mind when apparently you are regaining some short term memory."
"I don't care. I would rather you blow my mind with the truth than keep it from me."
"Fine." The puppy dog eyes she was giving him, whether intentional or not, were a killer and he had to give in to her. "Your parents owned a fancy company that is big time. I do not know what has really happened to it but maybe your iPad will tell you. Saying that though you are under strict orders to not go crazy trying to read it all in 0.5 seconds because I am too young and too handsome to be murdered by your Doctors."
Giggling at the look of sheer terror on his face at the idea she couldn't help but want more details of what he was talking about. "Do you know what field it was in? I promise not to go overboard with the iPad tonight so this is the best I can hope for."
"Television production." There was no point being vague as there wasn't a lot she could do with the information.
"Thank you." She didn't know what producers did or why her parents owned a company in it but he had answered her questions and he would probably kick her out if she asked any more.
Stephanie didn't stay up much longer but she did take the iPad to bed with her so whatever time she woke up in the morning she could spend a little time in bed going through it before she got out of bed.
The next day it was Sunday so Paul allowed Stephanie to sleep in but as it almost reached eleven and there was no sight or sound of her he was beginning to get worried so decided to go and check on her. Not wanting to wake her if she was genuinely still asleep he just pushed the door open but he was a little surprised to see her sat up in bed with her head stuck firmly in the iPad. "Good morning to you too."
Looking up from the iPad she didn't really acknowledge what he had said but instead she pointed to the iPad. "Did you know that my parents still owned the business when they died? Did you know that right now I was meant to be working there instead of being a worthless sack of shit who can't remember what she ate last at any given moment?"
He didn't like the idea of her being so down on herself so he moved to sit on the bed whilst he comforted her. "You are not a worthless sack of shit or anything close to it. You have issues with your memory stemming from circumstances outside of your control, nothing in there sounds like it makes you a useless sack of anything. I did know about the business but I didn't really think it was my place or that it was ever the time for me to share it with you."
"I read it all now. I want to know more about the business, I want to know more about what they know about me, about my family."
He wanted to help her but this was all very fast and he worried it was too much and that they would be overloading her. "What if we agreed to shelve the discussion of you actually investigating the business from the inside by talking to people until tomorrow and I will talk to people who know something about your brain and whether it is a good idea or not tomorrow?"
It wasn't a direct no from him so it wasn't exactly something that she could argue over. "Okay."
Breathing a sigh of relief he really thought that it would turn in to a bit of a battle of wills as she was so stubborn all of the time. "Well that went better than I expected. How about we have a relaxing day and maybe look at a few things on the iPad later but for the most part we do nothing?"
"Deal. Is it okay if I come and get some breakfast now? I am starving."
Laughing he couldn't help but shake his head at her. "And you need your medication. Come on, you're already off schedule with them but I won't tell if you won't."
She definitely wouldn't tell so threw the covers back ready to get out of bed and get some food.
