Day 24 (July 30th). We're Here Too!: There are many, MANY characters throughout the series, and today's prompt is all about showcasing which character you felt deserved more.
Focus: In which Sherry acquaints herself with Neo Domino City. Written by EibonVirgo.
Characters: Sherry.
The flight had been long. Boring. Her leg had shook for the vast majority of it, and Mizogushi had all but strapped her to the seat to keep her from fidgeting so much.
Sherry couldn't help it. At last, a lead. She was one step closer to her father's murderer. The mystery of the godsdamned card he had left her was that much closer to being solved.
They'd flown coach, together, and as discreetly as they possibly could. Sherry wore a scarf about her hair, drab clothing, and donned a sleeping mask for the majority of the flight. Mizogushi had followed her on in a sweatsuit and dark sunglasses.
About halfway through the flight, she wondered if they were really drawing more attention than they'd wanted—a bright, tall blonde who spoke only French and a man accompanying her who barely fit in the center seat.
It was the best thing she'd thought to do, at the time. Sherry had no idea how far Iliaster's influence reached. She had no clue how to guess whose eyes they looked through.
All she knew was that they knew her. They'd known her since they'd ripped her family into tiny pieces. And she'd have to be careful in Neo Domino City: their base of operations.
Sherry didn't know what to expect when she and Mizogushi unceremoniously unpacked themselves from the crowded passenger plane. She'd seen plenty of photos in magazines; read up in a lot of books about the culture, the food, and the atmosphere in one of the most technologically advanced metropoleis in Japan.
It certainly sprawled much further than her home city.
She and Mizogushi collected their D-Wheels from the cargo service in the south wing of the aeroporte and set off.
Their drive through downtown was mesmerizing. In the low light of evening, neon glittered off of buildings completely faceted in windows, the smells of frying foods and alcohol wafted up and down the street, and people were laughing and chattering as they passed each other, pointing and waving gleefully at Sherry and Mizogushi as they rode past.
Their destination was a quiet little townhouse in a secluded neighborhood uptown. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen connected to a living room. A little garage for D-Wheel storage. Perfect for them to set up in, and certainly easy to surveill.
"Je vais faire les caméras." Mizogushi's voice jolted her. "Would you like to take another little look at the city?"
"Ouais, give me a moment." Sherry shed most of her disguise, rolling her long pants up to her knees and discarding her bulky jacket to free her arms. From the back patio, she scaled the townhouse.
The building wasn't tall, but the hill the neighborhood sat upon gave Sherry but a small glimpse of the cityscape beyond her. It was like a galaxy on the ground. Millions and millions of people living and working and thriving in this city that somehow seemed to breathe.
It was beautiful. And terrifying.
No wonder Iliaster worked from here; in the shadows, underground, in between all of the lines of streets and blocks of houses, businesses, places of worship. There were scores of people here that Iliaster could twist to their black little heart's desires.
If she failed, this was—millions of people in danger. She had just arrived and already a part of her envied—and pitied—those people who didn't even know that they should be relying on her success.
Sherry fiddled with the card. Z-ONE. A card full of mystery… soon to be solved, she hoped. She shut her eyes and breathed in the smell of the neighborhood; deciduous trees with smelly blossoms ringed the curbside along the street, and far away she could hear a sound like rushing water. The city, and all its alluring life and terrible mystery.
Oh, the secrets that lived here.
