Timeskip – Anniversary

The perfect anniversary gift for Oikawa Tooru? The question haunted Mina for weeks, and consequentially Sugawara – who was forced to join her on countless missions to locate the best present. Not many believed the pair would remain together after graduation, but with Mina joining one of Japan's girl's volleyball leagues and Oikawa studying a two-year college program, their relationship had not faltered. Not to say that the year had slipped by without any incidents. There were plenty, mostly due to the fact Mina had remained close friends with Kuroo, someone Oikawa had deemed his archnemesis. Nonetheless, the mocha haired boy was forced to accept their friendship, particularly because they all now lived in Tokyo.

Mina was determined to sooth her boyfriend's anxieties by providing him a gift that would embody the extent of her love. So, when the foreign girl located a listing of an old Argentinian jersey worn by Oikawa's childhood favourite, she clicked buy despite knowing it would cost her an entire paycheck. Sugawara, who was relieved her search had concluded, had mixed emotions about the purchase as he was the one who had to pay the entire rent for the month. But alas, he loved his best friend and only wanted happiness for her.

"I promise I'll pay for rent next month, and I'll buy all the groceries! I had to buy it, Ko. I had to!" Curling her lips into a dramatic pout, the brunette blinked her large eyelashes, begging for his forgiveness.

"I know you will. Just go, okay. It's fine. Don't you need to decorate his place anyway?" Exhaling a gentle laugh, he waved his hand at her, signalling for her to unlatch herself from him. "And don't forget the milkbread you made." The milkbread that required days of prep and his assistance, he added mentally.

"Love you. Thank you." A quick kiss was pressed to his cheek before she unhooked her arms from around his middle. "I'll see you tomorrow. Don't miss me too much." After lowering an eyelid into a wink, she spun around excitedly then bounced her way towards the door.

Oikawa would be finishing class in two hours, which meant she had around an hour and forty five minutes to set up his apartment. From the local party store Mina had acquired a variety of decorations. From streamers to a large golden banner – she was prepared. Her personal addition was an enlarged photo of them both at graduation, a snapshot caught by Iwa who was always accidentally disturbing their personal moments. In the photo the pair were caught in an embrace, their foreheads pressed against one another and humour raising their lips into a laugh. It was Mina's favourite photo, she was stupidly in love with that smile of his.

How fitting was it that the second the caramel eyed boy walked into his apartment, she was fixated on the photo, mentally tracing the beautiful curve of his lips.

"Oh, hi there." His words were followed by a low chuckle as the brunette instantly turned to greet him, wine-glass in hand. He was early by fifteen minutes.

A cheerful smile had adorned her features as she opened her arms, motioning him to enter her embrace. "Happy Anniversary, pretty boy."

After removing his shoes, the male shuffled closer to his girlfriend then secured his arms around her waist loosely. His face nuzzled against the crook of her neck, flooding his senses with her scent and causing her to squeal at the ticklish sensation the action instigated. "Happy Anniversary to my favourite person in the world."

The pair had reserved a table at a nearby restaurant for lunch, Mina had planned on serving him the milk-bread for dessert along with a box of pastries from the café where they hosted their first date. During lunch, the pair began talking about ordinary things including how his morning class went. Due to his high workload, Oikawa was struggling to balance his position on the school's volleyball team and his responsibilities as a student. Mina had attempted to help him with his time management, but there seemed to be little progress.

"Hey, enough about school. Today's about celebrating us. Let's do that." Reaching over, he caught her hand in his, lightly dragging his thumb over her skin.

"You're in a bad mood, and now I feel bad." Expelling a groan, Mina propped an elbow onto the table then pressed her palm against her cheek with a pout on her lips. "I want to do something to make it better."

"You're so cute when you pout, Mina-chan." Mimicking her stance, he jutted his own lips and located his palm to his cheek.

"Keep copying me and I won't give you your present. I'll just sell it and actually pay for my rent... Oh shit. I wasn't supposed to say that." Clasping a hand against her mouth, the brunette gulped guilty as her boyfriend leaned across the table, disbelief flashing in his irises.

"Did you use your rent money on my gift? How expensive was this thing?" The poor male was also experiencing guilt, while his gift was thoughtful and wasn't the cheapest it certainly did not cost him an entire paycheck.

"So, about that… When you see what it is, you'll understand." Oh god, she prayed he would.

"Then let's go. You're done eating right?" Removing the napkin laid across his lap, he lifted himself from the chair then offered out a hand to his girlfriend. 'Shall we, princess?"

Oikawa's heart had almost stopped beating the second his eyes registered what his gift was. Running a hand through his recently cut strands, the former captain struggled to express his gratitude. Mina simply held up the jersey, waiting for him to accept it. His reaction had communicated his astonishment and she knew that she had succeeded in her goal.

"… I love you so much." The male managed to croak out once he took the fabric into his own hands. Did he deserve someone like her? He doubted it. But he was damn thankful for her.

"Hey, maybe it's the one he wore the day you met him. Wouldn't that be crazy?" A soft laugh danced past her lips as she brushed her hair over her shoulder. The casual movement had created an opening for the male, who was clearly overwhelmed by emotions. Stepping closer, he dropped his head onto her shoulder before peppering kisses against her skin.

"Tooru, stop that." Squirming away from his lips, she retreated a step back while biting back a laugh. "Come on, at least let me see what you got me before you start with that."

"Right. Can I give you it tomorrow? I just need to stop by the store one more time." Shifting awkwardly, he was seriously considering buying something a little more elegant.

"Let me see it, come on. I'm sure I'll love it." A reassuring smile was flashed towards him, as he reluctantly removed a small box from his pocket. Tugging on the box latch, he revealed a pair of promise rings. The design was intrinsic but sophisticated – and she absolutely adored it.

"It's for now, until I'm making more as a pro volleyball player… Do you like it?"

Rather than respond with words, the girl removed the distance between them and connected her lips with his. How was it possible that she continued to love him more each day? Was it truly safe to love someone this much? Even if it wasn't, she did not care. Because he was hers, and she was his. and that was enough.
