Fourth of July

Hello, everyone. This prompt was suggested by blankel1. It's Family- Fourth of July- post series.

"Hey, Adam, where did you put the game equipment?" Brian asked.

"It's in the truck already!" Adam shouted from his bedroom.

"Where?"

Adam opened the door and looked at Brian.

"It's in the truck." Adam repeated.

"Ok." Brian answered.

"How big is this fourth of July event?" Hannah wondered as she followed Adam downstairs.

"Pretty big." Adam replied. "It's a lot of fun too. They started it a year after the end of world war II as a way of getting together and having fun. It's kind of a mini fair. We set up games and events and we give the kids prizes and after sunset, we have fireworks."

"And we're in charge of the games?"

"Yeah. The lawn games at least."

They got in the truck and went to town. When they arrived, they went to the fairgrounds and started to set up. Adam was getting the relay-race ready when a few kids walked over.

"What are you doing?" The girl asked.

"I'm getting the game already so you guys can play." Adam answered.

"What game is it?"

"It's a relay-race."

The boy walked over to the starting line and started running to the finished line. Adam chuckled and shook his head. An hour later, people arrived at the fairgrounds and the kids started playing the games. Hannah helped Adam with the relay race; Brian and Guthrie were in charge of the beanbag toss; Crane and Ford were in charge of the obstacle course; Daniel and Evan were in charge of the water balloon toss. The kids ran around most of the afternoon, and had a lot of fun. A little girl had won the relay race and Adam grabbed her and her friends.

"Hey, what are you guys going to do next?" Adam asked.

"Balloons." Jessica exclaimed.

"Jessica, can you do me a favor?"

"Ok."

"Take a water balloon and splash one of my brothers for me. Ok?"

"Ok." Jessica whispered in response.

"Thank you." Adam answered. Jessica ran over to the water balloon area with her friends. They each grabbed a water balloon.

"Ok, now. We're going to give you a target and whoever hits it, will get a prize." Evan explained. Then Jessica threw a balloon and hit Daniel.

"Not me." Daniel stated. One of Jessica's friends hit Evan with a water balloon and the kids laughed and threw and Daniel looked at each other and scowled.

"I bet you it was, Adam."

"I know it was Adam."

Daniel and Evan knelt down in front of the kids and handed them water balloons.

"Hey, do us a favor and go target our big brother Adam." Daniel said. The kids ran over and Adam turned around and saw them.

"Adam, we have to hit you." Jessica said.

"Who said?" Adam asked.

"Um, Daniel."

"Daniel said?"

"Well, go ahead and get me."

Jessica threw the balloon and it hit Adam. The rest of the kids started in and threw theirs. Hannah and the others watched and laughed. Adam laughed with them.

"That was fun." Jessica giggled.

"It was? Well, you can go play now." Adam answered. Adam walked over to Hannah and hugged her.

"Adam, I wasn't planning on getting all wet." Hannah sighed.

"You'll dry off."

"It's almost 4."

"Yeah. Brian, Crane, and I have to set up the slip 'n slide. We've been doing that for a couple of years and the kids have a lot of fun with it."

"I'll clean up."

"Ok."

They kissed and Adam grabbed Brian and Crane. The remaining five cleaned up after the games. They watched as all of the kids rushed over to the slide. Hannah walked over and saw Adam standing off to the side wetter than he was before.

"You're not one of the kids." Hannah teased.

"I was dared to." Adam answered. Adam tried to hug Adam, but Hannah pushed his hands away.

"Don't you dare."

"Hey, Adam, can I go down?" Guthrie asked.

"Anyone can." Adam replied. Guthrie cheered and ran across the hill and down the slide. Adam and Hannah watched him hit the end of the slide and then come running up covered in grass and soapy water. Adam looked at Hannah and chuckled. "Let's go grab the towels."

"Good idea." Hannah answered. "Then I promised Marie that I'd help with the food."

They went to the truck and grabbed the towels. Hannah went off to help with the food while Adam took the towels back over to the slip 'n slide. He watched his younger brothers slide down the slide.

"Hey, Brian, race you down!" Evan challenged.

"You're on, partner." Brian answered. The two ran across the hill and slide down the slide. Brian hit the bottom first and cheered. "I won."

"Hey, Ford. Beat you down!" Crane exclaimed. Ford and Crane raced down the slide and Ford hit the bottom first.

"I win." Ford cheered.

"Race you down, Daniel." Guthrie shouted.

"Go against Adam. I'm wet enough." Daniel answered.

"Adam?"

Adam rolled his eyes and stood up.

"Fine." Adam sighed. The two raced across the hills and down the slide. They both hit the bottom at the same time.

Tie." Guthrie exclaimed.

"But at least we had fun."

"Yeah."

They went down the slide as many times as they could before it was time to eat. They all sat down on the ground and ate their supper. Hannah sat down next to Adam and smiled.

"You guys are a mess." Hannah said.

"Yeah, but we did have fun." Ford answered.

"Even though Brian kept pushing me around on the slide." Adam stated.

"That was only once." Brian exclaimed.

"I was just picking."

"Is it like this every year?" Hannah wondered.

"Yeah. We would have come last year, but with Diablo and the roof leaking, it was too much." Adam replied. They watched as the kids continued to run and play.

"They have a lot of energy." Crane chuckled.

"Yeah. Sometimes too much." Adam answered.

After supper, they cleaned up and continued to dry off. They talked and relaxed and waited for the sun to go down. When the sun went down, they watched the fireworks in the sky and when it was done, they went home.

"You guys sure know how to throw a party." Hannah stated.

"Yeah. We also like to remember our past and celebrate it. Without July 4th, who knows where we'd be." Adam answered.
