A/N: I don't know why but I wasn't very motivated today, which is why this took hours to write and is published so late. The entire prompt is called "one refusing to harm the other and getting hurt as a consequence". There's some violence in here, but not too graphic.

Happy reading!

"I can't believe I've been assigned to be back here with you", the Tiger next to Elphaba muttered, baring his teeth. "I'm missing all the fun."

Elphaba sighed as she took another peak over the wall they were hiding behind, checking the house they were supposed to be watching and the empty streets. It was already dark outside, the moon behind a veil of clouds their only source of light, and she was glad she remembered to bring her coat and hat, even though it made her even more recognizable in combination with her green skin. Not that it mattered, since these things which so easily gave away her identity were the very reason she was responsible for guarding the back door, just in case any of the people inside tried to escape.

It was the job with the least possibility of discovered, and most of the time the Resistance fulfilled their mission with her having seen not a single piece of action.

She couldn't exactly say if she minded; while she wanted to take part in the missions with more than just planning and watching the back door, she usually ended up uninjured and alive, a fate not all of her accomplices shared with her. They usually had a high number of casualties, especially during a bigger mission like this one.

Inside of the house they were watching an informal meeting of high military ranking people took place, as one of their scouts inside the Wizard's guard had told them. The plan was to kill as many of them as possible, if not through the explosion that was set to demolish the house in exactly seventeen minutes, then through lethal force once some of them escaped.

Therefore, watching the back door promised to be way less boring than so many other times before, which was why she only rolled her eyes at Ty, the Tiger's code name. They weren't friends, he was one of those surpassingly passionate about their cause ever since the Wizard had imprisoned and killed his entire family, and although Elphaba knew that they needed these kinds of spirits as well, those who would give their life for the Resistance, their blood lust and cruelty often repelled her.

"Someone has to watch the back door," she replied while taking another glance at her watch. Sixteen minutes until the house was bound to blow up and she could only hope that their hiding place was far away enough.

"Of course," he growled. "Just not me. There are enough wimps out there who would be perfect for this job."

Elphaba played with the knife in her hand, letting it scrape over the stone wall with a ghastly sound.

"Don't call me a wimp again."

The Tiger huffed. "You're not a wimp, Fae. You're just too ugly."

Rolling her eyes once again, Elphaba shot him a glare, although she didn't argue with him. Being called ugly, if not worse, had been normal for her ever since she started thinking and listening to people. The only person who had ever made her feel differently about herself was long gone from her life, and Elphaba forbid herself to think about her now.

The memory of Glinda was limited to the time she was lying alone in the darkness, trying to sleep and swallowing down her tears. If she allowed herself to think about her at any other time of the day, there was a great chance she would never be able to stop.

"Fae!" Ty hissed, nudging her shoulder and pointing to the street. "Someone's coming."

Elphaba squinted in the direction he was pointing at but couldn't see anything, cursing her nightly vision that was above average for humans and yet not even comparable to most Animals'. "What do you see?"

"Hard to tell," he replied, taking a step forward to get a better look. "They're wearing a coat. Two guards are coming with them."

"They don't belong to us then," Elphaba said more to herself than to him. "Can you see anything else?"

"Not really. The person in the coat is small though, I'd say it's a female."

Elphaba only nodded in response and they were silent for a little while until she started to see their shadows as well, their steps resounding on the pavement. The Tiger had been right, there were three of them, the person in the middle, who tried to hide their face under a dark hood, tiny in comparison to the others. The height almost reminded her of-

"Sweet Oz," the Tiger said, shaking his head in disbelief before grinning, exposing his sharp teeth. "Today is our lucky day."

Elphaba frowned as she watched the tiny person's steps, the night too dark for her to make out any details. "What do you mean?"

The Tiger bared his teeth before ducking his body, every muscle tense as if he only waited for the right moment to jump.

"Who would have thought that being condemned to be back here would give us a chance to kill Glinda the Good?"

Elphaba's entire body tensed up as her gaze was once again drawn to the figure under the hood, striding towards the house filled with military people. The house that was meant to blow up in twelve minutes. Her heart stopped beating in her chest before it started again, twice as fast and hard as before.

"What?" She choked out, her mind unable to comprehend why Glinda was here and what it would mean for her to get any closer to this Oz-forsaken house. Well, no, she did know what would happen if Glinda was inside once it all blew up, and her blood ran cold at the thought.

"I can't wait to rip that dreadful smile right from her face," he said through gritted teeth, grating his sharp claws against the pavement.

Her eyes almost bulged out of her head. "No!"

Ty turned back to her as she called the word out a little too loudly, pressing his paw against her face. As she struggled against the grip, he forced her against the wall. "You just told me not to call you a coward. Do you want to be one now? Because I don't see any reason why we shouldn't eliminate the little slut so she can't do any more harm to our cause."

He leaned in even closer to her, his teeth only a few inches away from her face. "Forget the captain of the guard and the other soldiers. Killing her is almost as good as killing the Wizard himself."

Elphaba finally managed to force his paw from her mouth, and she did her best to think of something that would change his mind.

"She's going to die anyway," She hissed, even though the thought alone made her sick. "If you attack now, you could jeopardize the entire mission!"

The Tiger only chuckled, his hot breath stroking her skin. "You still don't understand anything, do you? No one will care about the mission once we bring them Glinda the Good."

With those words he let her go and turned away to jump over the wall, leaving Elphaba pressed against it, her thoughts racing. Her breath was uneven and shallow as she tried to think of any other way to stop him from killing the woman she loved. Tightening her fingers around the butt of her knife, she shut her eyes close for a second.

There was no other way.

When she opened them again, she buried the blade as deeply into the Tiger's side as she could. He roared in pain, blindly striking his paw in her direction and she gasped in shock as his claws pierced through the skin of her left arm.

Startled by the noise, the two guards protecting Glinda hurried towards their hiding place, and Elphaba had to press her lips together and ignore the bleeding scratches Ty had left on her. Pulling the knife out of his flesh with a shaking hand, she was barely fast enough to fight off the first guard's attack, ducking her head at the last second.

She lunged forward and crashed her elbow into his face, jumping back as he fell to the ground with a dull thump. The other guard wasn't as easy to eliminate, holding out his sword ready to fight. Her knife wasn't long enough to get past his defense, and her burning left arm reminded her that she was already wounded.

"Elphie?"

Glinda's voice made them both turn around to the blonde, whose jaw was almost dropping to the floor. Elphaba took a split second just to look at her, taking in the features she dreamt about every night, before seizing the opportunity to cut her blade through the guard's neck. He fell over almost instantly, and for a second she couldn't do more than look at the blood stream which filled the thin gaps between the cobblestones.

Suddenly, she was engulfed in a tight hug, Glinda's arms squeezing her waist and she finally managed to divert her gaze back to the blonde. Her hood had fallen back, revealing the golden curls Elphaba used to spend hours playing with, and as she leaned in to press her small body even closer against her own, she immediately recognized the smell of roses surrounding her.

"What are you doing here?" Glinda asked after a minute and took a small step back, just enough so she could look the green woman in the eyes.

With that simple question, everything she had just forgotten while being in Glinda's arms again came rushing back.

Elphaba choked. "You have to leave. Now."

"What? No, why?"

"It's too dangerous here!" Elphaba hissed and grabbed the blonde's arm, trying to pull her further down the street, away from the danger she was so oblivious to. But Glinda struggled against her grip, leaning against her with her entire weight.

"No, Elphie, I have to go inside! They're expecting me, I'm already late!"

"Why are they expecting you? That meeting is for the military!"

Glinda frowned in confusion. "How do you know that?"

"Just answer my question!"

Yanking her arm away, Glinda violently shook her head. "No, you answer mine! What are you doing here, Elphie? Why do you know what's happening in there-"

The second realization hit her, the blonde looked like she had been struck, stumbling a few feet away from Elphaba.

"You're here to hurt them, aren't you? This is a trap!" Tears glistened in blue eyes, as she spoke the words.

"Yes," Elphaba admitted quietly. "But I'm not working alone, and I can't let them hurt you. Please, Glinda, you have to leave now!"

Shaking her head once again, Glinda stormed around her towards the house, yelling at her over her shoulder. "No! I have to warn them!"

"Glinda, no!" Elphaba screamed and hurried after her, managing to grab her left arm. A quick glance to her watch told her that she had barely four minutes left until the explosion would blow them up into a thousand pieces.

"You don't understand!" Turning back towards her, Glinda held up her arm, her hand in front of Elphaba's fingers. "Fiyero is in there! And I may not love him like I love you but he is-"

"Your husband," Elphaba finished, her insides twisting. All she could do was stare at the ring on the blonde's finger, suddenly too painfully obvious, the huge diamond screaming in her face.

Glinda nodded, biting her lip. "Yes. And captain of the guard. This house is our home."

Burning tears began to build in the corners of Elphaba's eyes, and she furiously blinked them back, horrified at her own weakness. This shouldn't be so hard. She had left Glinda years ago, with nothing more than an empty promise to find her again. She had no right to feel betrayed, and yet it was all she could feel.

"It was your home," she choked out, and used the way Glinda's body seemed to shrink in size to pull her further away from it again. "And we're leaving right now!"

The silence lasted only for a few seconds, before Glinda wriggled herself free from her grip, staying rooted to the spot. "No, Elphie, I have to warn him! You don't understand, we can't just let them kill him!"

"Why not?" She deadpanned, although she immediately regretted the words as she saw Glinda's face.

Wiping away her tears, the blonde strode towards her. "Because I'm pregnant!"

Her voice cracked at the last word, and she had to take a deep breath before continuing, while Elphaba's body was frozen, not a single muscle moving. "I don't love him, and I never wanted to sleep with him, let alone get pregnant, but I am not letting the father of my baby die!"

Blood rushed through Elphaba's ears as she tried to make sense of it all. Although her own life had changed so drastically during the last years, she had always refused to acknowledge that Glinda's life had moved forward as well. That realization hit her with full force now. And yet, in the back of her brain, she knew that they didn't have the time to do this.

Glinda was pregnant. Even though Elphaba's stomach turned at the thought of how it had been conceived, that someone else had gotten the honor of touching the parts of her only Elphaba had touched before, she couldn't ignore her wish.

"I will warn him," she said in a low, monotonous voice that didn't even seem to belong to her. "You stay here."

She wouldn't make it, and neither would Fiyero, but Glinda didn't know that. The blonde didn't know about the explosion nor did she know about the command to kill everyone stumbling out of these doors in panic. All Elphaba knew was that she had to stop her from running into this house and get herself killed.

Pressing a kiss onto Glinda's forehead, she had to physically restrain herself from lingering too long. She didn't even have a minute left.

"I love you", Elphaba whispered against her skin before running to the back door, pushing it open. She didn't look back, afraid that if she saw Glinda again, she would change her mind.

Barely a few seconds later, she was just reaching the stairs, she heard Glinda scream her name. Then, the world exploded around her.
