Because of her professors' attempts to stop them from spending time together at the hospital, working together again with Jeong-won has become an unfamiliarity – there are many lines that they can't step on and there are a lot of eyes that can easily dissect their relationship if the two of them made a slip.
Before, working with him was the highlight of her shifts; she could somehow freely stare at him at a close proximity, too, and she learned a lot from him. She used to think that to a degree, the patient and their guardians were as unfeeling as she was – as long as she saved them, she had done her job and they were happy – but he taught her how to make people trust on her. Though it was more for the comforts of their clients, she realized how important it was to have a person's confidence resting on her; it made her want to do better at her job. By the end of the day, when she would deliver the good news that the surgery was successful, the smile of the guardians would make her feel more content.
Dr. Bong and Dr. Bae are waiting by the entrance as the wild sirens of the ambulance erupts somewhere around the corner. Jeong-won and Gyeo-ul meet them, both are equally tensed caused by the severity of the situation.
"TA, the kid flew right through the window," Dr. Bong briefs them rapidly, barely pausing. "Several lacerations on the internal organs, broken ribs and shoulder. It's unfortunate. The mother hit her head, a portion of her skull is broken. The dad's leg is crushed, he might need to get it amputated."
Gyeo-ul looks over at Jeong-won; his face is filled with severe emotions, his eyes glimmer as his eyes water out of sympathy. She subtly moves closer to him and, after making sure that her white coat covers it, she grabs his hand and squeezes it. He glances down at her bewildered, but he nods at her gratefully. He interlaces his fingers and hers, securing her to his side. They only separate when the first ambulance hits the dark asphalt in front of the entrance. The four of them rush towards the medic.
"The patient is 32-year-old woman," the medic informs. "The kid is on the next ambulance."
Dr. Bong nods at Gyeo-ul and Jeong-won. "I'll take this. Jeong-won, you go to the next one. Dr. Bae, call Professor Kwon after you assess the father. I'll see you guys later." The mother is wheeled out of back of the ambulance to the emergency room with Dr. Bong right at the gurney's tail. The second ambulance arrives and Jeong-won and Gyeoul jog to meet them.
"You've called the OR, right?" Jeong-won inquires straightforwardly.
"Yes, Professor," Gyeo-ul replies bluntly as the doors of the ambulance open. "They're ready." They find a bloody mess in the back; the six-year-old girl is small and broken with several cuts on her face and neck, but the worst sight is the continuous bleeding in her abdomen. Gyeo-ul throws herself at the patient the minute the gurney hits the ground. She puts all her weight into trying to stop the bleeding. Her hands are everywhere, but the blood continues on flowing out. Jeong-won helps push the gurney in until they reach the elevator.
"She's heavily bleeding, Professor," Gyeo-ul informs. Her pristine white coat has been painted red and her scrubs are damp with blood.
"The ultrasound has revealed that shards of glass have penetrated her kidney and liver," the medic says. When the elevator opens, they fly past into the reserved operation room. Gyeo-ul jumps out of the gurney when a nurse has replaced her. She runs out and changes quickly into clean scrubs and washes her hands efficiently. She runs back inside and finds Jeong-won cutting through the patient's skin. She walks over to the other side of the bed. Once the patient is open, she begins placing laparotomy pads inside the patient.
Jeong-won and Gyeo-ul meet with the child's grandparents when the operation is finally over. Thankfully, the surgery is successful, but, of course, it's still too early to tell. They need to wait for her to completely recover before they can celebrate.
At the waiting area, the grandmother stands up, the tears overflowing to her wrinkly cheeks. She approaches Jeong-won and grasps his hand. "Oh, God, please tell me she's okay."
Jeong-won nods slowly, his face grave. "We did what we can. She has several cuts on her kidney and, in the liver, an object has pierced through her organ. She was bleeding severely and she needed several bags of blood."
"Is she okay?" she presses desperately.
"We have stopped the bleeding," Jeong-won tells her with a smile. "But we still need to check on her, wait for a few days. Hopefully, there won't be any complications." He goes on to tell them about the possible infections she could experience, but they don't hear it – all they care about for the moment is that their grandchild survived. The grandfather who has been quiet all throughout Jeong-won's explanations suddenly stands up and walks over to Gyeo-ul. He bows at her.
"Thank you so much, doctor," he muttered, his deep voice breaking as he sobbed. "Thank you so much."
After they have checked on the child and their parents who are still receiving treatment, Jeong-won asks her out for lunch and she agrees immediately – her stomach is growling since she entered the operation room. Instead of heading downstairs, they ask for the cafeteria to send them a meal to the GS room.
While they patiently wait for food, Gyeo-ul receives a call from his brother. When she was inside the operation room, she had received about a dozen of missed calls from him. "Jung-woo, what is it?"
Jung-woo's voice is anxious. "Gyeo-ul, I messed up."
"What is it?" Gyeo-ul demands, her tone terse. "Tell me."
"Mom is coming. I accidentally told her that you are seeing someone!" His statement deafens her. From across her, Jeong-won notices how she has stopped breathing. Her skin pales and the color on her lips disappears.
