Chapter 30
Carlisle and Esme had just arrived in their family home and everyone was around them as soon as they stepped through the doors.
"Why are you so late? What happened? We should have gotten here at about the same time." Emmett asked.
"Alice couldn't see anything, we were worried." Jasper added.
"I did call to say we'd be coming a few days later than planned." Esme reminded them.
"But you didn't give us any details." Jasper nodded.
"Don't worry, everything is fine now. We were half way here when I got called back. The person I was asked to look after got hurt badly, I had to make sure she'd be fine and since a few of her friends were hurt as well, I stayed to make sure everyone would be okay. It's a great place and we're trying to make friends there, to try and move us all over there soon. Helping people is usually the right way to go." Carlisle replied.
"She? So it's a female you're looking after then?" Edward asked him.
It's true that they had gotten permission to tell Edward and the others everything, and Alice and Jasper knew, but Carlisle believed that Edward needed a little more time and that he should be told, and showed, last. Bella had agreed, knowing that he knew Edward better than anyone.
"Don't try to look inside my head Edward, you won't be able to find anything." Carlisle replied, shaking his head.
"Yes, why can't I get anything at all out of yours and Esme's mind? Or Emmett and Rosalie's for that matter." Edward asked him.
"The witch who made us the sun rings did a spell to block our minds from you or anyone who could try to look into it. You'll only hear the thoughts we want you to hear." The doctor replied.
"To protect whoever you were supposed to heal?" Edward asked.
"Yes." Carlisle nodded.
"Alice, I brought you…" Esme started to say but Edward cut her off.
"Where did you see Bella? What did she tell you? How is she doing? How did she react to seeing you?" He asked his adoptive father.
"I can't tell you that Edward, I have to respect her privacy. It was just a run-in. It didn't last and she didn't even speak about you." Carlisle replied what had been agreed with Bella, glad to see that Bonnie's spell was strong enough to keep Edward out.
"I don't believe you. You're lying." Edward shook his head.
"Let it go, Edward." Alice sighted.
"He has to be lying and Jasper knows it. You probably told him the truth and now he's blocking me from reading his mind by concentrating on your feelings. You're all hiding something from me." Edward complained.
"Sometimes you have to accept the things you can't change, Edward." Emmett declared.
"Isn't that an alcoholic anonymous motto or something?" Jasper wondered, making Emmett chuckle with a nod.
"I will find out the truth. I swear I will." Edward declared before he left the house in a hurry.
"Do you think Bella is safe? What if Edward finds her?" Emmett asked no one in particular.
"I'm sure she's fine Emmett, don't worry about it. I have a feeling that she'll be able to handle Edward if he ever finds her before we bring him there on our own." Carlisle replied and Emmett accepted it.
"Is she okay then? Bella, I mean. Is she alright now?" Rosalie asked worried about Bella, but also for the new friends she had made there.
"Yes, she's fine and so are her babies. Everything is well." He nodded.
"Now, why don't we just start unpacking before we all go hunting together." Esme suggested to change the subject.
"Are we really leaving with you, then ? She's really ready to see us ?" Alice asked, worried that she had seen wrong or misunderstood what had been said.
Carlisle smiled and nodded her way, knowing how much she had waited for this.
During their hunt Carlisle explained what had happened in Mystic Fall's, causing him to come back for not one but 3 patients.
.
The night of the next decade dance finally arrived and everyone was busy one way or another. Alaric, Jenna, Finn and Sage were chaperoning, Elijah was going with Caroline, who didn't have a date and had decided she wanted a date who had actually lived through the 20's and remembered then (Stefan lived them but barely remembered anything because he was in ripper mode), Jeremy was going with Bonnie, Elena had decided to go with Damon, Rebekah was going with Matt while Tyler and Stefan were going alone.
Kol had a date / Work-session with Joe and Klaus decided that he would stay in with Bella to make sure that she rested the way she should be, and, of course, to spend some time alone together, something that was rare lately since there always seemed to be someone around.
"So, what are you making me tonight?" Bella asked him after Matt had picked up Rebekah.
"Lasagnas. I know you like that." He replied with a smile.
"You know me well. The babies also love it. Especially if you double the cheese." She nodded.
"Good then. All you have to do is go back on the couch and wait for it to be done, love." He smiled.
"I've been sitting down forever. I'm fine now, I can walk around. I want to help you." Bella insisted.
"You still need to rest a bit and I want to take care of you. Come on, I've brought you an old journal I managed to get my hands on recently. It used to belong to someone I'm sure you'll find very interesting. I left it on the table, you can read that while I finish up here." Klaus argued.
"Fine, you win." She accepted, eager to read this book.
Bella started reading and was so concentrated on the book that when Klaus came back to set the table, she jumped up.
"Did I scare you? Are you okay?" He asked her with concern.
"No… I… You did but it's my fault. I was so taken with the journal that I forgot that someone else was here." She replied with a deep blush on her cheeks.
"I guess I was right to bring it to you then?" He smiled.
"Yes you were." She nodded, getting up and joining him at the table.
"It smells amazing." She complimented him.
"Thank you. I hope you're hungry."
"Oh, the babies and I could eat a horse, that's how hungry we are." She nodded eagerly.
"Well, I'm fresh out of horses but we'll start with dinner and if you're still hungry I'll run to the Grill and bring you back some pie." He smiled.
Bella nodded and just before she sat down at the table, her phone biped.
"Something wrong?" He asked her.
"No, just Jenna sending me pictures of the dance. Your sister looks like she's having fun. I think I'll save these pictures and put them in an album for her. She'll like to look at them later." Bella replied, showing him said pictures.
"She loves how things are here now, being able to have an almost normal life. She's happy." Klaus nodded.
"That's because you're all together, acting like a normal family." Bella replied.
"I think that it's also because of you. Don't underestimate your role in our happiness, Bella. You're the best friend and sister that Rebekah never got to have before. You're a big part of her happiness. Of course your also the biggest part of my own happiness." Klaus insisted.
Bella blushed under his compliment.
"Oh look at this one. You can actually see Stefan pinning over Elena while she dances with Damon." Bella commented as she showed Klaus the latest picture she received.
"Do you think they'll grow estranged once more because of this?" He asked her.
"No, they've moved past that now. Stefan will eventually understand that Elena wasn't the one for him. I personally think that he should give it another try with Rebekah, but that's just an idea." She shook he head.
"Another miracle made by Isabella Swan." Klaus complimented her.
Bella blushed but she didn't answer him, instead, she went back to eating and, after complimenting him on his cooking skills, they started talking about various subject, showing once more how easy it was for them to hold a conversation together.
When Rebekah and Elijah finally came back home later after dropping off their respective dates, Bella and Klaus were sitting side by side on the couch, talking softly about old family traditions that some of them wished his family would do again.
"So, according to Jenna's numerous pictures, you all had fun tonight." Bella said when they came inside.
"And nobody got murdered or daggered too, that's got to be a first for us." Rebekah chuckled.
"Especially in this town." Bella nodded.
She had been told of the past few dances and she was glad things went well for once.
"What about you, did you manage to rest?" Elijah asked Bella.
"Klaus can be very persuasive when he wants to be." Bella nodded.
"Good. Well, I'm off to bed then. I need my beauty sleep. Goodnight." Rebekah said before waving and heading upstairs while Klaus and Elijah stayed a little while longer with Bella.
"Did everything go well with Caroline?" Bella asked Elijah as Klaus served him a glass of Bourbon.
"I believe the lady did have fun. It wasn't anything romantic, just friends dancing and having fun, but it felt nice. I don't regret going." He replied, looking happy about the way his night went.
"Even if it had been romantic, she wouldn't have kissed you because she decided that from now on, in a serious relationship, she wouldn't kiss before the 3rd date to make sure the guy was really serious." Bella confessed.
"Where did she get that idea? I mean, she didn't seem to want to wait before, with her other boyfriends…" Klaus wondered.
"This decision might be the result of one of our sessions…" Bella blushed.
"Oh… Well, I'm sure it's for the best then. Anyway, it doesn't matter, I'm just aiming to be her friend here." Elijah nodded.
Carlisle had told him about the Denali sisters and Elijah, along with Kol, planned on meeting them eventually. Maybe one of the sisters would be good for one of them.
"Good." Bella replied.
"Okay well, I just came here to drop Rebekah off and to check on you Bella, I'll be off now." Elijah declared as he stood up and, after kissing Bella on the cheek and nodding in his brother's direction, he went down the stairs and through the door.
"And then they were two…" Bella whispered once there was just Klaus and her left in her living room.
"You need your rest as well Bella, I should go home too." He told her.
"Are you sure? I'm fine if you want to stay some more. I'd hate to see this great evening end so soon, and you know how much I love it when you sleep by my side. Even if there's no sex involved, You know how I love being in your arms." She replied with a smile.
"I guess I can stay then, if you're sure that it won't be a distraction." He nodded, sitting back down by her side.
"Good." She smiled.
.
It hadn't been hard for Jacob to find Bella's new town and where she lived in it. Everyone seemed to know who she was and to like her here. He made sure nobody she hung out with saw him, he wanted to watch for a while before he did anything.
Charlie hadn't said much about the father of Bella's babies, but his family and him must be important people because Bella looked well protected. Two very tall and strong men seemed to be patrolling the streets around her office and her so called secretary was definitely not human.
"Come back home Jacob, it's not worth it." Leah told him in his head while he was resting, in his wolf form, in the woods near Mystic Fall's.
He didn't have enough money to get a hotel room and he didn't want to risk anyone she knew seeing him. He didn't know why either, but he didn't want her to see him either yet.
"Mind your own business Leah." Jacob growled.
"We miss you Jake, it's not the same here without you." Seth insisted.
"It's not like she'll take you now anyway. She's pregnant and with someone. She seems happy." Paul tried to reason with him, being a bit harsher than he needed to be with his brother in law but since his departure was hurting his wife, Jacob's sister, he couldn't let it pass.
"I just need to see for myself that she's fine a while longer." Jacob shook his head.
"Then why don't you go and speak to her? Tell her that you're here, get to know her friends." Seth suggested.
"No, not yet. I… I just need a few days, or a few weeks, to make sure that she's fine. Sam will understand." Jacob insisted.
"Of course he understands but we all miss you." Jared said.
"You'll be fine, it's not like you need me for anything. There hasn't been a vampire around for years and you've all got your own lives now." Jacob replied.
"Expect for the Cullen's." Seth reminded them of the time he had caught Rosalie and Emmett checking in one Charlie and Bella from afar.
"Edward too." Paul added.
"What do you mean? When was Edward by?" Jacob asked.
"I don't know, a few days ago maybe." Paul replied, not really caring.
"It doesn't matter anyway. Even if a hostile one comes by, there's enough of you to fight them off. I just feel like I need to be here right now, like I'm needed." Jacob said to convince them.
"It's not like we can actually force you to come back but think about what this is doing to you… Why can't you just forget about her and move on?" Leah asked him while Paul and Jared shifted back in human form.
"Like you managed to move on from Sam? Like you managed to forget about your feelings for him when he got together with Emily ?" Jacob replied viciously, knowing he'd hurt her with this comment.
"That was low." Seth replied.
"Fine." Leah replied, shifting off.
Once she was back in her human form, she ran to the house she still shared with her mother and packed a bag. If Jacob wanted to be stubborn, she could be too. She'd drag him back home by the tail if she had to. She wasn't going to let this stupid Isabella Swan break his heart any more than it already was.
Yes, Jacob is still a bit immature here...
