(F/N)'s POV
"This is the guest room, and you'll be staying here temporarily," Kei said, carrying my luggage inside the fully furnished room. It was the same size as my room back in our house.
Shin-nīchan went back to our house to bring my things over here in the Tsukishima Residence. Well, it looks like I'll be staying here for the meantime until I regain my memories back. It will make my brother a little bit calm knowing someone will look after me. Someone who knows me a lot better.
"Thank you, Kei and I'm really sorry for the trouble. I told my brother that it wasn't really necessary," I tried explaining. It indeed was embarrassing, I'm sure I can handle myself pretty well even without my memories.
"Don't be stupid, Shin-nīsan know what he was doing. Of course, your safety is his first priority. Mom, totally understand that he can't leave you alone. He was ready to give up his job for you but you were clearly against it. This way the only, so, stop saying it's troublesome. It's kind of annoying," Kei replied back, annoyed.
I couldn't help but chuckle, "Kei's a nice person,"
"What?" He seems surprised by what I said.
"Even though you said those words in a harsh tone, but I can really sense that you're nice." I smiled at him.
"I wish your memories would come back right this moment," Kei said which got me confused.
I tilted my head to the side, "Why would you say that?"
"Because, the (F/N) before the accident will never say that I'm kind, not in a million years. She would rather die than say it. She will retort back, that's for sure," Kei explained.
"Eh~? But I'm not the (F/N) before, I am (F/N) of the present. Does my personality annoy that much?" Well, it's not that I'm hurt or anything. It's just that, I couldn't help but be nice to him. There's a voice inside me that keeps on telling me that I have to be nice. Sure, I want to retort when he said those things but somehow I can control my temper pretty well. Besides, it was really petty to argue about that.
Kei sighed, "I'm sorry," He took his eyeglasses off and pinched the bridge of his nose, "You're right, I shouldn't have compared you from before the accident. I guess I was just used to the old you."
I took his hand and gave it a squeeze, "Ne, Kei. Can you tell me about myself before the accident? I'm really curious how much I've changed."
A small smile appeared on his face but his eyebrows creased together while doing that, "Now, where did that come from?"
"I told you," I walked over the bed and sat down, "I'm curious."
Kei stared at me for a long time before speaking again, "Alright, after dinner, I'll tell you. But first, you should unpack and prepare for school tomorrow." I nodded at him, "By the way, what are you going to do with club?"
"Ah, about that...I may be able to return to club activities." I smiled at him.
He nodded, "Ok, I'll come up later if it's time for dinner."
Kei left the room after that, while I sat there on the bed staring on the floor. My mind was blank for a moment, then a knock caught my attention. I turned to the door to see my brother smiling at me.
"Hey, can I come in?" I nodded. He made his way towards me, taking his seat, "Will you be alright? I'm returning to Tokyo tomorrow. I'll pick you and Kei here early in the morning for school. Also, I already called mom and dad about this set-up and they agreed with it."
"I'll be fine, nīchan. Kei and Himiko-okāsan will there," I reassured him.
"Alright," He sighed, more like a breath of relieved, "I hope you get your memory back,"
"Yeah, me too." I looked up the ceiling, "I guess there's no need to rush. The headaches can be a pain,"
Kei went up to invite us to dinner, it was rather a lively dinner. It's always been me and Shin-nīchan when I was still in the hospital. Himiko-okāsan had to so many stories to tell, I enjoyed listening to them. After dinner, my brother said his thanks for the last time and left to go home. He said he needed more time to prepare his things.
I was left in the kitchen cleaning the dishes because I insisted to wash them. Kei was in front of the fridge taking out a large box of strawberry milk, pouring it inside his glass.
Huh, we have the same favorite when it comes to beverages. Wait, what? Did I just remember my favorite drink? I shook my head and focused on finishing my chores. When I was done, I put away the apron and went was about to go upstairs when Kei called out to me.
"Come to my room when you're done," He told me, not looking. He was actually busy watching the television about volleyball. "You said you want to know about (F/N) from before, right?"
I remembered, "That's right! I'll be there after I take a bath!" I went to the bathroom to take a warm bath because it's been snowing since this afternoon and I can feel the coldness slipping inside the house.
After taking a long bath, I changed into my pajamas and went to Kei's room. I knocked on the door and waited for him to open it. I heard a click and the door opened to see Kei in his plain white oversize shirt and gray sweatpants. I don't know why my cheeks felt hot once our eyes met. He stepped aside to let me in, I excused myself as I enter the room.
He sat down on the floor, books scattered on the floor. Wow, Kei seems to like reading books, he must be smart or something. He looked at me, gesturing to sit down beside him. I settled down beside him, putting a small distance between us. I don't know why I felt a little uncomfortable all of a sudden. Jeez, what is this?
"Do I look weird to you?" I asked all of a sudden. It's because he wouldn't stop looking at me.
He rubbed the back of his neck, "Sorry, I'm not used to seeing you in short hair."
"Oh, I cut it off as a sign of a new beginning for me. This is my second life, after all." I smiled at him.
"Right," He cleared his throat, "So, where do you want me to start?"
I thought for a moment, "How about you describe me from your own point of view and compare me before and now."
He looked at me, before clearing his throat, "Let's see, where should I start? Well, I guess you can say you're the type of person who easily gets riled up with my smartass remarks and bad jokes. We used to fight all the time because of that. But despite being fiesty, you also have this kind and caring side. You really love looking after everyone on the team. You cheer for us, drive us to our limit. You're pretty much popular among the male student population and you always aim for the top but you still couldn't beat the Top 1 of the Ranking in the freshmen level."
"And who is that?"
He looked at me straight in the eye. There he goes again with the staring, "Me, of course."
"Eh!? Kei, you're top 1?"
"What? You don't believe me? I can show you the results from the rank board at school tomorrow."
I chuckled, "No need, I believe you. I just couldn't believe I would try to beat you. What rank did I get?"
"You've always been in the second rank."
I couldn't believe it, "Really? Wow, I can't really imagine me being smart. Tell me more!"
"Eventually, we oddly became friends because of our everyday arguments. Just so you know, you're the only female friend I have. I don't really like being around girls—"
"They annoy you, right?" I cut off with a smile.
Kei nodded, "Do you remember anything?"
"Little bits and pieces, I remember meeting you in the library and the next time we met when I joined the club to be the manager." Those memories just came flashing back.
"How do you feel?"
"A little dizzy, that's all." I gave him a reassuring smile.
"I think you should rest now. We have morning practice, we should be early tomorrow."
"I'm alright," I told him, "By the way, can you tell me the names of these people?" I showed him a picture of the volleyball players—specifically his teammates. I got the photo from the desk of my study table.
"You're going to take a rest after that," He said.
After telling everything about the club. He took me back to my room. I was still feeling dizzy, I don't if I memorize the names of the members correctly.
I lied down my bed, feeling my head landed on the soft pillow. It wasn't painful, remembering those memories. It's more like my brain's trying to rearrange the events in its proper position. It will be in a jumbled state as I try to remember it. I felt a warm hand on my forehead. I opened my eyes to see Kei looking down on me with concern written all over his face.
"Hey, I'll be fine," I forced a chuckle.
"It's not funny..." He said in a quiet voice, but I can feel his hand trembling on my forehead, "It's scary how fragile you're condition is. Just thinking that you might not remember anything anymore scares me."
"Kei, everything's gonna be alright." I placed my hand on top of his that was on my forehead, "You worry too much."
Kei stays silent as I feel my eyelids getting heavier. I must be that tired, huh? I've completely fallen asleep at that moment.
I woke up the next day feeling a comfortable warmth beside me. I shifted my position, slowly opening my eyes to see Kei's sleeping face right in front of me. He looks like a child when sleeping. I also noticed that he was more good looking without his glasses. My hand reaches out his forehead, letting my index finger traced from his forehead down to his lower lip. The realization hit me, my cheeks exploding into a thousand shades of crimson.
"What the heck (F/N)...?" I mumbled.
Kei began shifting in his sleep, pulling me towards him. My face landing on his chest as he held the back of my head securely on his hand with his chin resting on top of my head. He started combing his fingers against my hair. I can smell his cologne, it has a nostalgic scent. Where did I smell this before?
"(F/N)..." Kei mumbled, "Please wake up..."
Is he sleep talking? When I felt his hold around me loosen, I grab the change to gently break away from him. He was still sleeping and when I looked at the time, it was almost time to prepare for their morning practice. I can't believe Kei fell asleep here in my room. It's not like it bothered me, it was rather comforting having him with me. Like my body was used to being around him all the time.
I shook Kei by his arm to wake him up. It took a couple of times before he finally opens his eyes. He was rather confused as to why he was looking at me so early in the morning. He must not have realized that he actually fell asleep with me.
"Good morning," I wave at him while smiling.
"(F/N)? Why are you here?" He asked, getting up. He rubbed his eyes and reach for his eyeglass that was on the bedside table. He looked around trying to scan his surrounding before returning his eyes on me, "Damn," He covered his face, "Sorry, I must have fallen asleep last night without realizing."
"It's alright, it was rather comfortable to see someone with a familiar face when I opened my eyes. At least, I know that my memories are still intact." I smiled at him.
Kei scratched his cheeks lightly, "We should prepare for the morning practice. I'll go back to my room and fix my things. Mom will be calling us for breakfast. She has work too," Kei got out of my bed, walking towards the door, "Good morning, by the way, I forgot to reply earlier," He finally went out after that.
I couldn't help how cute he looked with his blushing cheeks. I couldn't believe Kei and the past me would argue all the time. He seems to be a nice guy if you ask me or am I judging him too early? I shrugged off my thoughts and started preparing for the morning.
I took out my club jersey, looks pretty good to me. I heard that this was the exact pair of clothes I was wearing when I got into the accident. I also put my uniform inside my small duffle bag. Once I finish changing and preparing, I took my bag and went downstairs to greet Himiko-okāsan by the kitchen. She's preparing breakfast while wearing apron underneath was her formal clothes. She's the principal where Kei and his brother Akiteru-nīchan finished their middle school.
"Good morning, mom—" I automatically covered my mouth while my cheeks flushed in embarrassment, "I—I'm sorry about that Himiko-okāsan."
She smiled at me gently, "It's alright, sweetie. You can call mom if you want to. I don't mind, I'm sure Kei doesn't mind sharing his mother with you."
I turned to the door to see Kei standing there, listening to our conversation. He put his bag on top of the couch beside mine.
"It's alright, (F/N). Mom doesn't mind if you call her that." Kei said, taking his seat on the dining table.
"See? You're already like a daughter to me (F/N)-chan. A daughter-in-law to be exact,"
Kei chokes on his water, unable to breathe at the moment. When he was able to, he looked at his mom, "What the heck, mom!"
Himiko-okāsan laughed, "Be careful Kei,"
I forced a laugh as I took a seat beside Kei, I can see his cheeks turning really red. I snickered at the sight, it was pretty entertaining to see Kei making that kind of expression. After breakfast, we went on ahead saying goodbye to Himiko-okāsan. Shin-nīchan was already outside the gate waiting for us. He did pick us up.
He dropped us off exactly the front of the school gates. There is still no sign of students. It's early in the morning after all. Kei went ahead after talking to my brother.
"(Nickname), take care alright? Behave and don't cause trouble for Kei." He said.
I pouted, "Mou~ Onīchan!"
He laughed, "I'm just kidding! But seriously, take care alright?"
I nodded, "Take care on your way to Tokyo." I waved my hands at him as he drove off.
"Come on, the others are already at the gym."
I followed Kei towards the gym of the volleyball club. He was right, I can hear voices inside the gym. There are also those loud squeaking noises coming from the soles of their shoes against the wooden floor. Kei opened the door and I poke my head from his side to see what was happening inside. There I found those people from the day I woke up. Whoa, they really are in the volleyball club. Kei stepped inside excusing his self, he turned to look at me before facing his teammates again.
"Ano, may I have everyone's attention?" Kei said.
"What's up Tsukishima? That's the first time you ever asked us to pay attention to you," A guy with light grey hair said to Kei with a wide grin in his face. He's Sugawara Kōshi, the vice-captain.
"It's good to see you back from the training camp," Another guy with dark hair said. If I remember correctly he's the captain, Sawamura Daichi.
"Well, I—" He sighed, looking over to me by his shoulder.
"Ah! It's (L/N)-chan!" A boy with bright orange hair pointed his finger at me. This boy is called Hinata Shōyō. According to Kei, he's one of my friends, and I call him by his first name.
Everyone was surprised when I finally entered the gym wearing my club jersey. They looked frozen in their feet as they stared at me.
"Good morning," I smiled at them.
I felt a body colliding against mine. I turned to my side to see a beautiful girl hugging me. She's the senior manager of the club! Her name is Shimizu Kiyoko.
"(F/N)-chan! It's good to see you!" She looked at me with teary eyes.
"It's good to be back, Shimizu-senpai," I smiled at her.
One by one the other members came forward to greet me. He surrounded me with their faces plastered with some much happiness.
"It's good to see you, (F/N)." Daichi-senpai patted my head.
"(L/N)-chan! I missed you!" I heard that everyone calls him Suga-senpai. He pulled me into a hug, I can sense some motherly vibe on him.
"Glad to have you back, (L/N)-chan," Asahi-senpai patted my head gently.
"(F/N)-chan! We're glad to see you well!" There's no mistaking it. The one with a semi-bald head is Tanaka-senpai and the boy with highlights in the middle of his hair is Nishinoya-senpai. They both have teary eyes while looking at me.
"Hora! You're scaring her!" Another boy came up to me, I can tell he's got the same vibe as Suga-senpai. His name is Ennoshita Chikara, he's the next captain of the team. "(L/N)-chan, I hope this isn't a shock to you, considering that you don't remember everything."
"It's alright, senpai. Being exposed to familiar places helps me regain my memory. It's good to be back and thank you for the warm welcome." I bowed to my upperclassmen.
"(L/N)-chaaaan!" Shōyō jumps in excitement as he approached me, "Welcome back!"
"Urusai, boke! You startled her!" A boy with dark blue hair sharp eyes said, but he's kind of good looking as he stood beside Shōyō. Kei told me he was a childhood friend of mine and we came from the same middle school, which means he knows me better than Kei. He bowed his head a little, "I hope we didn't shock you or anything due to a sudden change of the environment around you, (L/N)-san."
"I'm fine! It's alright, Tobio." I smiled at him, reassuringly.
"(L/N)-san, it's good to see you," A boy with cute freckled all over his cheeks said to me.
"Ah, you're Tadashi!" I said, smiling. It made him happy because I remembered his name, "Thank you for your kind words."
"There's one more person we would like to introduce to you," Shimizu-senpai said, "Hitoka-chan!" A girl with blonde hair approached her, "Do you remember her name?" Shimizu-senpai turned to me.
"Yachi Hitoka, right? You're my classmate, sitting behind me and also one of my friends." I smiled.
Her eyes started tearing up, she ran towards me and gave me a hug while snuggling her face against my chest, "(Y/N)-chan! I'm so happy!" I hugged her back.
It was quite energetic for everyone that morning. Even Coach Ukai was surprised to see me. He even gave me a hug to welcome me back. While I was working around the gym, it felt like I know what I was doing. My body knew what I needed to do. I was almost finished refilling the members' squeeze bottle with tea and cold water.
"We're running out of tea and ice," I said to Hitoka, she immediately write it down on her little notepad.
"(Y/N)-chan, it looks like you still know what you need to do." Hitoka smiled at me.
I looked at the palm of my hand, "It's kind of weird but my body knows what I was supposed to do even if I don't remember."
"Maybe it's your reflexes," Hitoka said.
Morning practice ended a couple of minutes before the first period. Hitoka and I made our way to our classroom but I had to stop by the faculty office to meet up with our adviser. I followed her all the way to our classroom. The noise died down once I got inside, I could see the surprise on my classmate's faces when they saw me standing in the front.
"I know you're all aware of (L/N)'s condition right now. So, please, make her feel at home and be nice to her. Let us help her regain her memory," Our adviser said, she then let me take my seat.
Our classes the whole morning was finished without a hitch. It was almost lunchtime, I remembered that Himiko-okāsan made us a bento. I should invite Hitoka and Kei to eat together. I opened the door of our classroom to see a girl with brown hair pulled into a messy bun. She looked at me in surprise.
"Uh, may I help you?" I asked, not sure what to say to her.
She cleared her throat, "It's good to see you, (L/N)-chan." She smiled sweetly at me, but it felt fake though.
"Thank you? Um, who are you again?"
"So, it is true. You did lose your memory," She said. I saw the corner of her lips perked up a little, "I'm Sakamoto Nanami, Kei's girlfriend."
"Kei's girlfriend...?"
