Chapter 27: Justice and Judgement
"LOOK AT ME!" the grey demon exploded, the man begrudgingly obeyed. His sunglasses were hiding his dark eyes, his corrupted eyes. "WHAT HAS GOTTEN INTO YOU? WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?" Judgement was bursting with anger, she was stood, fists clenched, in front of a despondent Helltaker. The huge man was sat alone in the backyard, the evening sunlight was providing the last natural warmth to the day. The Helltaker was sat on the large brown bench, the ashtray was overflowing, he had clearly been out here a while. He withdrew another cigarette from his pack and proceeded to light it. "NO, NO MORE. YOU ARE GOING TO LISTEN TO ME!" she slapped the cigarette out of his hands. "Fuck off Judgement" he stared at the demon.
"YOU HAVE PUSHED US TO OUR LIMIT, YOU ARE MEAN TO US, YOU HIT ZDRADA. YOU ALMOST FUCKING KILLED LUCIFER!" the high prosecutor was shouting as loud as she could. The man was just simply staring through her, Judgement felt as if she could cry. "Please tell me wha-" she began, lowering her voice and trying to get through to him. "Now, now Judgement dear. He is a sensitive soul, don't go shouting at him like that" an evil voice was coming from behind her. The gravel crunching beneath her knee high crimson red boots, the heels especially. "Beelzebub..." Judgement said through gritted teeth, "I swear if you have anything to do with this" the high prosecutor manifested her claws, the metal weapons already attaching themselves to her hands. "Oh don't be so silly. Everything is fine isn't it dear?" Beelzebub turned to looked at her slave. "Everything is fine" he repeated, nodding as he said it.
"See? You all seem to think there is something wrong with him" Beelzebub's grandiose smirk was stretching across her face. All she received from Judgement was a hiss, the high prosecutor shoving past Beelzebub and making her way inside. She entered the kitchen and found the rest of her demon family gathered in the lounge, all of them looking up at her as they entered. Everyone was there, all of them concerned, but no one saying anything. Malina didn't even have her video games on, she was busy comforting her big sister. Judgement felt she was walking on egg shells. "Any luck?" Justice asked, turning her head as she heard Judgement's footsteps approaching. "N-no" a sad voice replied.
Lucifer had puffy red eyes, you could tell she had been crying, the fucking devil, crying over a man. "I just know-" she stopped to sniff, "I just know Beelzebub has him under control, but we can't touch Beelzebub without harming him. Whenever we go to harm her, he gets in the way..." she was holding her elbow, looking down at the floor. She looked up and quickly scanned the faces of her demons, all of which were also looking at the floor, unsure of what to say or do. The devil looked at Zdrada, her face was devoid of makeup, her mascara had been cried away. "You okay Zdrada?" Lucifer's feeble attempt to stimulate conversation was not received well. "Yeah, fine. I wan-" she hesitated, "I wanna go, away from here" she made direct eye contact with the devil. "This doesn't feel like home anymore", the Bitch Demon glanced at the back door of the kitchen which would lead to the backyard. "He isn't himself anymore".
"Wooahh, woaah slow down there smokey. We can't just abandon him!" Justice stood up from the sofa, a lone Cerberus moved to sit by her leg. Justice acknowledged the Cerberus, kneeling to pet her. "Maybe it's for the best" Pandemonica chimed in, she was incredibly tired. She had Modeus quietly sobbing into her shoulder, giving the Lustful Demon's back a rub as she wept. "Are you guys hearing yourself? This is crazy!" Justice was turning to looking around the room, "We can't leave him!". Azazel had been sat with her legs crossed, twiddling her thumbs trying to think of an answer, a sad frown was across her face. "Maybe, if we leave and then come back, he will be better?" the angel was trying her best to be helpful.
Judgement was still stood, arms crossed, eyes closed. Desperately trying to think of a solution, normally she would attack without thinking, Beelzebub wouldn't stand a chance. Now, she ran the risk of hurting him, a risk she wasn't willing to take. As they continued to sit in silence, the back door opened. The husk of a man entered followed by his master, "Keep walking" the high prosecutor bared her fangs, claws clenched. The man payed no attention to this warning and took a step closer. The two Cerberus sat on the floor both growled as he approached, their black tails going stiff and pointing upwards, just like Judgement they also bared their canine fangs. Beelzebub was slightly intimidated by this display.
"It's okay Sweetheart, they don't love you like I do" she grabbed his giant left arm. "Let's go to our room". The man didn't say anything, he stared straight at Judgement. The devil turned to look at him, for a second, she thought she saw him struggling to think, or move, or even speak. Eventually he obeyed silently, following the demon up the stairs. Beelzebub smiled, her plan was most certainly coming together, the demons were embracing despair. She wouldn't let Lucifer win this time.
"It's not him" Justice said quietly, "It's not, It's not" she repeated, shaking her head. "We can't blame him for-" Justice stopped as Modeus sobbed loudly, "We can't". There was a long pause, Lucifer let loose a dry cough. "I'm returning to our realm, you're all welcome to join me" she stood, instantly beginning to manifest the portal on the floor, not caring anymore. "Wait, we are leaving now?!" Justice turned her head in disbelief of the silently agreed consensus among the other demons. "N-no! We don't even get to say goodbye?!" Justice heard someone enter the portal, the devil had already left.
"Justice.." Pandemonica said, handing Modeus over to Azazel. The angel and the demon entered the portal. "Let it go dear, if we try anything Beelzebub will just use him against us". All three Cerberus stepped and fell through the portal together. Judgement was stood with the three, her arms still crossed. "He is her weapon against us" the grey demon sighed, it was a loosing battle. Pandemonica adjusted her glasses, "It is almost impossible to get through to him, we know this. He will need to break free on his own" Pandemonica may not show it, but she too felt like crying. "I'm sorry..." Pandemonica crossed her arms, stepping backwards, she fell through the portal feet first.
"If you can pry him away from her, you can say goodbye" Judgement placed a hand on Justice's shoulder, "I feel if I was to see him or...her...again, I wouldn't be able to control myself...They might both end up dead". Judgement gave the two sisters a nod, she turned and jumped into the portal. The orange portal was becoming smaller, Justice noticed this; "Go on you two, I'll catch up". Zdrada was already on her way, she looked at her sister when she stood at the precipice. "Are- are you coming sis?". Malina was on the verge of tears, "I want to say goodbye...". Justice sadly knew she couldn't allow her to. "Zdrada, take your sister with you", she put an arm around the Sour Demon and lead her over to her sister and the now diminishing portal.
"I'll say goodbye for you".
Why am I bothering? Justice knocked weakly on the white bedroom door, it was strangely quiet. She had stumbled her way up the stairs, never having needed visit their room. She just wanted to try one last time. She heard footsteps approaching, the door opened and there he was staring blankly at Justice, "Who is it dear?" Beelzebub's voice came from the bed, "Justice" his voice monotone. "Hey big guy, can I talk to you? Alone" Justice tried her best at maintaining a smile. The big man turned to look at Beelzebub, she gave him a nod of approval. He stepped forward, moving to shut the door behind him, "Leave the door open my darling". " A bit of privacy please B" Justice tried to sound as friendly as she could.
The man stood still as Justice leant past him to close the door. They were finally alone, she placed a hand on his face, feeling his cheek and chin, he didn't react at all to this. He hadn't been shaving. He usually shaves every other day. "Hey, you big dumb idiot, are you alright?" she moved her sunglasses to be on her head, no reply came from the Helltaker. "Beelzebub treating you well?" she asked again, he was silent still, his eyes locking with her pale ones. "Yes" he said finally, "She treats-" she put a finger on his lips. "Shh...I need you- the real you, to talk to me...now" she awaited his reply.
But none came... his empty eyes stared into her pale ones, even her's were filled with more life. Behind his was absolute darkness, an abyss... behind that there was a man trapped, screaming. "I need you-" Justice's eyes were beginning to fill with tears, "I need you to tell me-" she sobbed, "That everything is going to be okay...". He remained silent, his gaze still locked onto hers. "Because, I don't know if it will be. I can't-" she let go of his face and wiped her eyes. "I can't imagine a world- a Hell without you".
"Please, say something. Say anything! Please!" she begged, the Awesome Demon was becoming desperate. She knew it was hopeless, at least she had tried. She leant up and kissed him on the cheek, moving to whisper into his ear, he was refusing to react to any outside stimuli. "I'll look out for you, everyday. I know you'll come find us...If you came for us once, I know you'll do it again". Justice thought she saw recollection flash in his eyes for a moment, but it was instantly gone.
"Goodbye for now, Champ"
"Justice, this doesn't feel right. We should have told him before we left. You are always getting us in trouble, he is going to be so mad with us when we get back!", Judgement looked out of the window, concerned as the house was slowly disappearing. "Justice?" the middle aged Uber driver repeated, as he peered in his rear view mirror, he caught sight of the two silhouettes sat in the back of his car. Wait, was that chick wearing horns? his mind asked. "Yeah, my friend here uses pet names like that" Justice simply laughed it off, "Disguises now!" the former prosecutor whispered to the current one, realising that neither of them looked human right now.
Their horns disappeared into their hair, the black tails disappeared into their outfits, their sharp canine teeth disappearing into normal human canine ones. The two demons had decided to dress casually for their adventure into town, Justice was wearing a pair of black jeans and a red baseball jacket, complete with red converse shoes. Judgement was was wearing ripped black jeans, and a grey bomber jacket, she was wearing black running shoes. They looked relatively normal.
There was a thin plastic screen that separated the two compartments of the car, avoiding the spread of germs and what not. He had picked these two up at the last minute, apparently they wanted a ride into the nearby town. "Which one of you is Julia?" the taxi driver asked, "Ah, that would be me, my dude" Justice gave him a little wave. "Ah, alright. So you must be Jessica" he looked at the grey demon, Judgement didn't reply. Justice nudged her, "That's you!" she whispered again. "Oh yea, nice to meet you?" Judgement tried her best to act normal.
"Should take us ten minutes to get there...I'll be quiet now" he chuckled quietly. Judgement was still nervously looking out her window, Justice could sense her anxiety, the blind demon nudged her companion again. "Relax Jessica, we will just have a few drinks, get a taxi back, we will be away for a few hours" she paused, "We will be fine. You can just use those puppy dog eyes of yours and we will be A-ok!" Justice smiled. "I still don't like it, we should have woken him to tell him we were leaving", "Since when did you care about rules? It's just a few drinks, we ain't doing anything wrong. Girls gotta live a little". "I guess".
"Hey, can we get two beers over here" Judgement shouted over the sound of the music, she leaned on the bar, frustrated that she had been waiting for so long. This place is properly crowded, her mind wandered. "Budweiser okay?" the bartender finally replied, "Definitely". He handed over the two opened beers, "Cheers". The demon dropped a single note on the bar, unsure if it was enough but walked away before she found out. She returned to the booth that her and Justice had obtained, placing the beer down in front of her companion.
"Here, drink up", Judgement shuffled on the seat to sit opposite Justice. By the time the two had chinked their bottles together, Judgement had already drank half of her's. "This is the third bar we have been to and you're necking beers like there is no tomorrow J, Chill" Justice smiled, taking a swig of her own beer. "Budweiser again? Get a different one next time" Justice didn't care really, she would drink anything. "Maybe get something sweeter?". "Justice, our whole life here has been sweet things, pancakes, chocolate-" Judgement began, "Him" Justice pointed her bottle acknowledging the answer, Judgement looked away in embarrassment. Yeah, definitely him.
"Judgement, we are demons, we crave sweet things. Hell has nothing like what's here" she gestured to all around her, "Even though I can't see it, it's amazing". While Judgement was looking away while Justice rambled, she had noticed two men eyeing them up, they were both smirking, both leaning on the bar. "Heads up, we have company" Judgement whispered, slugging her beer backwards and finishing it off entirely. "Are they cute?" the Awesome Demon was warming to the idea of meeting new people. "Justice!", Jessica slid out from the booth, "I'm gonna get us another round, I need to be more drunk". She walked past the two men, giving them a disapproving look as she passed, their perverted gaze lingering on her for too long.
Unsurprisingly, Justice could hear over the sound of the music, the two men were approaching their booth, one of them shuffled along the seat to talk in Justice's ear. "Hey, are you and your friend new here? We haven't seen you two before" he was practically shouting in her ear. "I'm blind, not deaf dude" she said back, the demon decided to entertain the human, for now. "Yes, we are new here". She heard his friend laughing at her blind joke, taking a nervous sip of his drink. "What's his problem? Doesn't have your confidence" she smirked, still staring straight forward. "Oh shit, here that, we got a joker here" the man sat at Justice's side looked at his friend.
"So, are you and your friend single?" the closest man asked. Ah, that didn't take long. "Yeah, as a matter of fact, we are". She wondered how long she could keep this going. "What's your name?" the other man asked, coming to stand closer to the booth. "I'm Juli-" she stopped, "Yeah, I'm Julia and that-" she pointed at the angry demon stood behind the other man. "That is Jessica" the two men were both startled by the sudden appearance of this woman. She had another two Budweisers in each hand. "Apparently, she kills her partners after she has had sex with them" Justice laughed, drinking the last dregs of her beer.
"I hope you boys like chains and screaming" the demon was now howling with laughter, slamming the table. She didn't need eyes to see how terrified these two were. "Scram weirdos, I'm not into short huma- I mean men" she moved to sit on her side of the booth. The two men didn't move, "Didn't you hear, do I have to whip you to death?!", she banged a fist on the table. This seemed to make them move. The two men left with whatever pride they had left still intact, "Dude I told you they were out of our league" Justice heard the man who had stayed furthest away said to his friend.
"Oh my god Judgement, how did their stupid faces look? Were they shocked like-" she mimicked their faces exactly, talking about them as soon as they were out of earshot. "They looked stupid alright.." Judgement seemingly wasn't enjoying herself, this Justice noticed. "What's wrong Judgement, something is eating at you I can tell" she pointed her finger in the shape of a gun, "Fire away sister". "What?" Judgement was trying to hear her friend over the booming music, "Why do they turn the music up to be so loud?!" she was almost shouting. "Let's go somewhere quieter then" Justice moved to stand up. "Did you see a smoking area anywhere in here?" awaiting guidance from her friend.
"Yeah, yeah this way"
"Mind if I take that hotshot?" Justice winked as she swiped a cigarette from a man's hands, he was too enthralled to speak, simply shrugging and retrieving another one once the two demons had passed. The two stopped in the corner of the outside garden, away from the general crowd. It was a nice green space, planted pots doing the best they could to absorb the cigarette smoke and replace it with oxygen. The garden wasn't technically a garden due to the AstroTurf covering the entire place, there were benches with different coloured umbrellas scattered around. There were giant black empty oil barrels placed around the garden acting as counter-tops and ashtrays.
"Justice!" her companion was very embarrassed, she watched her slightly drunk friend try to light the cigarette by clicking her fingers. "Justice!" she stepped to block anyone's line of sight of the fire. "Sick party trick dude, look how that chick lit her ciggy man" a drunk man was standing with his girlfriend not too far away, "Awh leave her be, her friend's kinda cute" the equally drunk girlfriend giggled. "Hey!" her boyfriend realised what she just said, Judgement wasn't drunk enough for this yet.
"Ignore them, look-" Justice swapped positions with the high prosecutor, standing in front of Judgement's line of sight of most people. "Tell me what's got you down today", Justice swigged her beer. "Look, it's nothing. It's just guilt". "Past, Present or Future". "Wait how can you have future guilt?!" Judgement waved the smoke Justice was blowing into her face away. "It doesn't matter. I just feel guilty- that I didn't notice he was being corrupted by Beelzebub, I wish I had done something sooner..." she crossed her arms. "Hey, you're Judgement not high prosecutor when we are here, none of us knew" Julia smiled, offering the cigarette to Jessica.
"No thank you- you don't get it, I wish-", "That things were different?", Justice downed the rest of her beer and placed the empty brown bottle on a nearby barrel. "Yes!" Judgement realised she hadn't been keeping up with Justice in terms of drinking. "Look Judgement, I wish things were different too. I wish we hadn't spent so long apart from him. I wish he didn't go into the abyss for that bitch. I wish that I had confessed my feelings sooner to him. I wish he-" "Ladies, can I get you anything more to drink?" a female waiter came over holding a notepad.
"Yeah, can I have a round of your strongest uhh- whatever" Judgement necked her beer and threw it behind her, the glass bottle shattering on the pebble garden behind her. She NEEDED to be more drunk. "Yeah, this is getting too heavy. Let's get fucked" a smiling Justice was glad that the heart to heart was kept short, now was not the time for emotional shit, now was the time for drink...
"You see, thaaaats the thing, no matter what we did back then at least we could rely on each oth-" a very intoxicated Justice looked to her left and realised she was alone. "Justiceee?!" she slurred, trying to find her lost companion. The two had stumbled to another bar and were currently sat in their outside garden, the two demons had ordered another round of the strong stuff and were sat chatting on a bench. "JUUUSTTICEEEE?!" the demon shouted, trying to stand and almost loosing her balance.
She stumbled forward, walking as fast as her jelly legs could carry her. The high prosecutor glanced sluggishly around the bar for her lost companion, she was no where to be found. "JESSSICA?!" Judgement tried something different this time. She almost fell through the double doors leading into the inside of the bar, was that Justice at the bar? The drunken grey demon stumbled over and placed a hand on the shoulder of Justice, "There you are Juuuustice" he turned the demon around, "Oh, I'm sorry, have we met?" the human woman with dyed white hair turned and smiled at the grey demon. "Oh, uhhhh, no" Judgement was too drunk to be embarrassed.
"JUUSSSSTICE!" the demon yelled, stumbling around the bar. "You need a water my friend" she heard a voice say, as she stumbled past groups of people, "Sick demon outfit bro!" another voice was heard. She lazily stared over at the pool-table, the green of the table was catching her eye. That wasn't the only thing to catch her eye, there was a woman dressed like a demon dancing on the table. A small crowd of people were clapping in time to music as well as the woman's stomping feet.
Judgement stumbled towards, joining the group and sluggishly clapping in time with everyone else. "Eyyyyy, there you are Ju-Juila! Don't abandon meee eveerr again", anyone who wasn't completely drunk out their minds had noticed that both the two demons were...well demons...or dressed like demons. "Wait- how arrreee you dancing without falling off the-" Justice interrupted Judgement by lifting her up onto the pool-table, taking her by the hand, the two dancing together. Suffice to say, the two demons spent more time stumbling over each other than dancing.
What a night.
"That was so aaawesomeee, I've never danced like thaaaaat before. You got the hang of it eventually..." Justice was leaning on the bar with Judgement, both of them severely drunk. "Shut up...Cheers" Judgement raised her glass, she didn't even know what was in it. She made her glass collide violently with Justice's. The two drunk from their glasses in a sloppy manner, "How are weee getting home?" Judgement wiped her face with her wrist. "Fuck knows, Zdrada organized the taxi here. Wait, wherrre are we again?" Justice's sunglasses were sliding down her face.
"Fucked if I know". "Yeah, you ARE fucked". Judgement drank from her glass again, but as she went to drink, a drunken man had stumbled into her, spilling a little beer down her front. "Ooooh, so sorry ma'am" the man slurred, unaware of the incoming fist. Judgement had instantly attacked the poor man without thinking, "Oh, there she goes!" Justice howled with laughter upon hearing Judgement's fist collide with the man's face. She tried repeatedly to place a hand on her friend's shoulder but kept missing. She tried again and finally suceeded this time pulling her friend back to the bar to prevent her from throwing anymore punches, "Leave the poor sap". "Hey, you two! The girls dressed as demons!" a voice rang out, the two demons looked behind them, expecting a bar fight to erupt at any second. Justice began gripping a bottle nearby, ready to smash it. All they saw were groups of people busy drinking and a man holding his face on the floor.
"Get out of my bar please, you two have been nothing but trouble all night", it was the owner speaking, he was behind the bar in front of them. "Look at what you did to my pool cues!" he gestured to the table in the distant corner of the bar, the demons turned their heads to look, all the pool cues were broken, snapped in two. "We didn't do that!" Justice adjusted her glasses, turning her head to face Judgement. "Did we do that?" she tried whispering to her friend, coming out slightly louder than she had hoped for. "No, I mean, I no remember" Justice drank the rest of her beer in one go, not stopping to breath. "I no remember?" she laughed at her friend.
"Finish your drinks and get out of my bar", the owner was now approaching the demons, leaning on the bar in front of them. "Already have cunt" Justice burped in his face, "Oh for fucks sake" Judgement noticed another approaching man with a big black vest on which said 'Security', she copied Justice's tactic to finish her drink quickly and began to lead her friend out.
"We're going, we're going!"
"Shhhh, Justice be quiet!" Judgement giggled, fumbling with the set of house keys she had swiped, opening the front door of the house. "Why, I don't wanna be quiet. The night is still young" the blind demon was slurring her words terribly, almost speaking gibberish. "I feeeeeeeel like singing!", "Pleaseee don't". "How didd that song gooo, the oneeee we heard in the taxi?" Justice leant against the door, "It ain't me, IT AIN'T ME, I ain't no-" the two practically fell into the hallway laughing as the door swung open. Judgement had to carry Justice inside, she laughed to herself saying "I'm always saving your ass", the two stumbling into the lounge.
Judgement placed an inebriated Justice onto the large sofa, "So that's where that came from", Judgement didn't know what she was referencing. "Stay there, I'm going to get you some water" Judgement walking into almost every wall and object on her way into the kitchen, grabbing a glass and filling it up from the tap, spilling most of it on her journey back to the lounge.
Upon entry, she failed to notice initially that the coffee table in the middle of the room had an entire boardgame covering it, various pieces and figurines were on top of the board, countless cards of various designs, pieces of paper and pencils were strewn about the table and floor. What a weird looking game...
She turned to look at her drunken friend, but her white eyes found two new ones instead; the Helltaker and Malina were both fast asleep on the far side of the sofa together, the Sour Demon was curled up on his lap in a giant black hoodie, snuggling into his chest, they both looked like they had also been drinking. She was amazed they hadn't woken them up with the noise they were making. Justice was now resting her head against his leg, using it as a pillow, she too was fast asleep now.
"Ah fuck it" Judgement said aloud, drinking the water for herself. "I'm leaving you here, J. I'm heading to bed". She turned and stumbled towards the stairs.
"Goodnight drunkards"
That's a message from Judgement to them and me to you ;)
