"Why are you late?"
Sunny heard Aizawa before she saw him, and she cringed at the tone of his voice. Slowly she raised her head to find Eraserhead's pissed off expression set on her.
She was extremely late by about three hours. Turns out the random train she decided to hitch a ride on was going the complete wrong way. And between not being able to read the words on the signs on the stations she passed through and dropping her phone at some point she was surprised she was able to find her way back at all.
"I got lost," She replied somewhat truthfully.
Aizawa's eyes hardened as his gaze dropped to the pink case in her right hand, and then to her empty left hand, "Where is your costume?"
"I lost it." Again, that was somewhat truthful.
Eraserhead's scowl only deepened, but the words that came out his mouth were totally unexpected as he turned away from her, "Are you hungry?"
Sunny nodded furiously and licked her lips.
"Want a Macdonald's?"
Is the space pope reptilian?
Of course.
Again, she nodded eagerly, trailing after her teacher as he headed out of the station.
In the hours that followed, she didn't find an appropriate time to tell Eraserhead about her experiences with the League of Villains. After all, how do you drop a bombshell like that over a nugget meal?
Aizawa didn't mention the hospital incident while they ate and reminded as silent as her. But he watched her carefully, nonetheless, taking note of her uncharacteristic muteness and soft movements as she ate.
"I suppose you're going to need a new costume." He finally spoke, almost startling Sunny and making her swing her gaze his way.
"A new what?" The cogs turned in her head as she was pulled from deep thought, "Oh, right, I suppose I do." Her gaze dropped again.
Aizawa peered at her, "Something bothering you?" He could tell something was wrong, but he knew better than to just force whatever it was out of her. She needed to tell him in her own time. She needed to trust him, and he needed to trust her.
Again, Sunny's gaze flickered his way, "Eh, yes – I mean no. No, I'm fine. I just lost my phone and I'm thinking about it."
"Need to get hold of someone?"
Sunny paused, "No… No, I guess not." Her eyes drifted away again, and Eraserhead frowned but didn't press her any further.
"Over the weekend I want you to design a new costume. Maybe use what happened at the hospital as inspiration."
Sunny looked confused for a moment, but her eyes still didn't find his, "You're not going to tell me off?"
"Tell you off about what?"
"What happened at the hospital?"
"If I told you off, would you do it again?"
Sunny's pumpkin eyes finally met his bottomless ones, "Yes."
"Then I'm not going to waste my breath." He replied, leaning back in his seat. He watched as Sunny's facial expression went through the motions, but eventually settled on a small smile.
With a little 'huh' she dropped her attention back to her food again.
"I take it Midnight told you all about what would have happened if you attacked that villain?"
"Yes."
"You're very lucky to have gotten away with that, but saving a child isn't something to be punished for. I hope you're proud of yourself, Sunny..."
Sunny didn't reply to that. Guilt swirled in her stomached and she finished the rest of her meal off quickly. She even left some fries, which just confirmed Aizawa's suspicions that something was wrong.
Eraserhead dropped Sunny off later that evening, and she was glad that he didn't drive off until she had shut the entrance door securely behind her.
Immediately, she headed towards Fred. This was one person she could tell; this was one person she had to tell if a bunch of criminals were on her tail – literally. She wouldn't be surprised if they already knew where she lived, but with Fred at the front door and a few other of the inhabitants of this block of flats being somewhat unsavoury characters you wouldn't want to meddle with, it wasn't a surprise they hadn't already advanced.
If the League of Villains did manage to get past Fred, they might struggle to get past the other thirty-six versions of him standing dormant in the basement, seeing as Fred stood for 'Final Response Extreme Detection Drone', he wasn't a machine you would want to mess with.
After a brief conversation with the bot, Sunny headed up to her apartment and made a beeline straight for the sofa and collapsed over the arm of it with a groan. For a long time, she just stared at the cushion she'd faceplanted into, but at some point, she must have fallen asleep because the sound of her apartment buzzer startled her so violently, she flipped herself off the cushions to find it was suddenly daytime.
Saturday.
She scratched her head, ears wobbling as she figured out what was going on.
Sunny briefly wondered if the apartment buzzer was all in her head, but when it went off again, she scrambled to her feet and headed towards it.
Pressing the receiver, she immediately recognised the pair of large eyes peering worriedly at her through the doorbell camera.
"Midoriya?" She cocked her head to the side when his unmistakable green, wild hair appeared on the intercom screen.
The boy startled for a moment; eyes searching above his head frantically to find where her voice was coming from before finally finding the camera right in front of his face.
He offered a wobbly smile, "Hi…" He said, and in response, Sunny pressed the entrance buzzer to let him into the apartment.
It wasn't long before Midoriya appeared from behind the sliding elevator doors, looking extremely nervous as Fred stared unblinkingly at the back of his head.
He visibly relaxed upon seeing Sunny waiting for him patiently at the end of the hall, offering a gentle smile as he approached.
"Would you like some tea?" She offered, stepping aside to let him into her home.
Midoriya practically tripped over the threshold, eyes boggling as he entered her apartment, "Sunny," He choked out, "This is amazing."
Sunny was already on the move, heading towards her kitchen. She had quickly changed out of yesterday's clothes while Midoriya made his way up to her apartment and was now sporting some oversized joggers and baggy hoodie. Her tail was tucked up inside her hoodie to stop her butt from hanging out.
"Thank you," She replied, flicking the kettle on. A few minutes later, the pair retreated and settled on Sunny's balcony amongst the cushions of the seating around the unlit fire pit.
From the crisp, freshness still lingering in the air, Sunny assumed it was about midmorning, and she stifled a yawn and pushed a pair of large sunglasses onto her face to shield her sensitive and irritated eyes from the glaring sunshine.
"I'm sorry," Midoriya began quickly, noticing her groggy demeanour, "I tried to text and call, but your phone just went to voice mail?"
"Oh, I dropped it somewhere," Sunny scratched behind her ear briefly, pulling her knees against her chest and pulling her hoodie over the top of them. She looked like a black and white 8 pool ball.
"Oh, right," Izuku paused, looking sheepish as he sat awkwardly with his hands clasped tightly in his lap, "Your hair looks nice."
Sunny's lips twitched in response, her gaze slipping past his head and out towards the city skyline behind them. She briefly wondered if anyone was watching them, but Izuku rambling on pulled her back into the moment.
"Kaminari gave me your address… I-I hope you don't mind."
He was nervous about something, more nervous than he usually was around her. His large eyes flickered anywhere but at her and she kept catching him sucking his bottom lips anxiously between his teeth.
Sunny peered at him, "It's fine," She began slowly, "So, what's up?"
"I… Er…" Midoriya rubbed at the back of his neck apprehensively, "I saw the news, you were amazing, Sunny… O-Or should I say Domino? That's awesome! You must have jumped, what, forty, fifty feet? You were like wooooosh~!"
That wasn't why he was here, and Sunny knew it, but she teased, "I suppose Domino is better than my original hero name idea..."
Midorya glanced back at her, genuinely curious, "Oh?"
"Yeah, T.F.U."
"What does T.F.U stand for?" He cocked his head in question.
"The fuckest Upest."
At her response, Midoriya just rolled his eyes and scoffed at her playfully. Shaking his head, he turned back towards the skyline. They stayed like that for a few more minutes, all the while Midoriya could feel Sunny's penetrating, inquisitive gaze behind her blacked-out sunglasses, and he let out a hot puff of air.
"You didn't get into trouble, did you?" He then asked, causing Sunny to cock her head.
"Trouble?"
"W-Well yeah, you used your quirk without a license… But I suppose you didn't use it to hurt anyone, exactly… Only save someone…"
Sunny realised what he was getting at and shook her head quickly, "No, I only used my quirk in defence… Midnight said you don't need to be a hero to be able to save someone."
Midoriya smiled softly, "I think saving someone automatically makes you a hero." He then chuckled nervously, his gaze shifting from Sunny to look behind him over to the skyline. "This is a lovely view…"
He trailed off, and a still silence filled the air around them once again. Izuku remained turned away from Sunny, but her attention was wrapped onto him.
"Why are you here?" She pressed carefully, startling him a little. Her question had come out maybe a little harder than she had intended, and the green-haired boy whipped his head back round to face her, spluttering nervous nonsense.
"I wanted to ask for your help," He finally choked out, "O-Or I suppose finally take y-you up on your offer… If it still stands!" He added the last part quickly.
For once, it clicked instantly to Sunny, "You want combat help?"
Midoriya nodded hurriedly, "Y-Yes, please. I've learnt to control my quirk better over work experience and some things happened that… That made me realise I have a lot of work to do. If I can learn to move around even a little bit like you can, then well… Well, that'll be a huge help…"
Fighting Stain head-on really put things into perspective. It made him feel soft. And for the last few days, all he could think about was that if Sunny was there, then she could have taken him on. He'd seen her fight and now he had received a taste of Stain. He had analysed Sunny, and he knew in his very bones she could have bested him. Stain was fast, but Sunny was faster, and she packed strength behind her movements that Stain couldn't have reached. She wasn't as fast as Ilda, but the agility she held in her movements meant she could change course in a blink of an eye; she wasn't committed to her movements like most people were with speed quirks. It was like a dance that he was desperate to learn the steps to.
Sunny had unparalleled agility, and he'd watched her fights with his peers with hunger. She seemed to play with her opponents before going in for the kill; running rings around them to understand their fighting style, or to just have fun with them. Not to mention, her ability to predict movements was unrivalled thus far.
If he could catch just a glimpse of that technique…
"I'll do you a deal," Sunny began thoughtfully, tapping her finger against the corner of her mouth, dragging Midoriya's attention to her sore looking lips, still somewhat chapped from fire, "I need a new hero costume – help me design one, and I'll help you with your fighting style… Yeah?"
Izuku's jaw dropped. She wanted his help?! With her hero costume?!
He figured she had to be joking, but the serious expression on her face said otherwise, and immediately he nodded frantically. Wordlessly he extended his hand for her to shake, which she did without hesitation.
As soon as they had separated, he was already elbow deep into his rucksack.
"I actually have a few ideas," He began, pulling out a well-used, black and white notebook and flicking through the pages energetically.
Sunny peered at him while he fumbled around for a few moments, and then smacked his open notebook onto the table.
For a hot second, Sunny didn't really know how to react to all the drawings of her in Midoriya's notebook. She seemed to be more or less faceless in the sketches, but her body was poised in different movements and positions. Annotated around the outside in words she couldn't read were lines upon lines of text.
"I just realised you probably think this is really weird..." Izuku suddenly muttered, and Sunny raised her head from the sketches to find the green-haired boy had turned bright red.
"Erm..." She began, pulling the notebook from him. He let her drag it away but began to shiver a little when Sunny flicked through some of the other pages, noticing there were also sketches of most of her classmates, "Okay... This makes sense. You like to study people?" She handed Midoriya back the notebook and he wordlessly nodded. She continued, "What have you said about me?"
"W-Well, I don't really know much about your quirk..." He began, still avoiding eye contact as he focused on the pages of his notebook, "But it's Big Cat, right? So, after some researching, I think I have a basic understanding of it."
"Can I help at all?" Sunny cocked her head to the side. This caught Midoriya's attention and his eyes flew up to meet hers, wider than ever.
"I don't want to ask too much of you..."
Sunny shook her head and waved him off, "Nonsense," She then pointed to the text in his book, "It looks like this sort of information could come in handy someday. It will definitely help you be more prepared for all sorts of villains! So, I would like to be of help – anything to help a future hero!" She grinned at him, and Izuku's soul left his body.
"B-But... Aren't I competition?"
Sunny's expression fell to visible confusion, "Competition?"
Midoriya dragged his eyes away from her intense orange hues, "Yeah, like, one day, we will be competition. Is it wise to spill all your secrets to me?"
Sunny still didn't understand, "Why would we be competition? We will be heroes, what is there to compete for? I just want to save people. I don't care about leader boards and rankings." She tapped her chin again, "The way I see it, if I help you and it means in your career you save just one extra person, that's a total win!" She threw her hands up, the grin was back. "I don't care if you're better than me – if anything, I will be glad, because that means you're saving even more people, and that's a good thing, right?"
Midoriya smiled genuinely at her, feeling a little overwhelmed by what she was saying, "Right." He confirmed back at her. He watched as she started pouring over his notes with eager eyes and let out a sigh of contentment.
They stayed like this for a little while. Idle chatter was shared between Sunny asking questions about Midoriya's outfit ideas. He mentioned there was a girl on the support course who was extremely good at gadgets and inventions, and although Sunny shied away at the idea initially, Izuku quickly convinced her to at least try it out.
Sunny liked to keep things simple. She broke complicated things, either through being too heavy-handed or just getting too overexcited.
"I've been meaning to ask," Midoriya began, watching Sunny as she continued to flick through his notebook. She didn't move her eyes up to acknowledge him, but when her ears swivelled his way, he took that as his cue to continue, "How do you predict things that aren't alive?"
Sunny immediately paused and raised her gaze to Izuku, cocking her head to the side.
He continued, "I noticed on the TV... You told those police officers to get out the car before that piece of metal landed on them – I mean, the building hadn't even broken there yet, a-and you were ready to grab that piece of ceiling, even before it fell and, oh-oh, you also left at exactly the right moment before the floor collapsed."
It took a moment for Sunny to process all the information Izuku had just thrown at her. He'd spoken so quickly it all strung together in one word.
"Well..." She slowly began, "I have really good eyesight, sort of-"
"What do you mean 'sort of'?"
"I can see far away really good, but close up," Sunny held her hand right in front of her face, making herself go cross-eyed, "I'm not so good."
"Like a cat!" He suddenly exclaimed brightly.
Sunny looked confused, "Wha-"
"Cats are short-sighted. They can't see things close to them," He raised his hands and waved them in front of his face to make a point, "I suppose that makes sense."
"I suppose it does…"
"Have... Have you not thought to research things about cats to see if there's any correlation between them and your quirk?" Midoriya pressed, and Sunny shook her head 'no'. "W-Well maybe you should, you might find out something you didn't know before!"
"Huh..." Sunny mused allowed. She'd never even thought to do that.
"Anyway, sorry," Midoriya jabbered, "Y-You were saying..." He trailed off expectantly.
Sunny paused for a brief moment before shaking her head and continuing, "Well, I have good hearing too... So, I suppose I just use that to help... work things out?"
Midoriya nodded in understand, scribbling something down in his notebook, but then he paused, "What do you mean 'work things out'?"
Sunny's ears flopped up and down, "Well, take that steel support and the police car for example; I could clearly see the fire travelling through the building, and that hospital based on its architecture is about twenty-five years old," And just like that she started spewing nonsense, "and based on the size of the building and government regulations, there would be approximately between seventeen and twenty rooms on each floor – not including cubicles, of course-"
"Of course..." Midoriya muttered.
Sunny continued, tapping away at her chin, "With interior walls probably about nine inches in thickness and most likely made of plasterboard, you're looking at fire spreading at about eight seconds per square foot – but obviously, if you take into account all the flammable materials in a hospital, it's even faster, especially with heat transfer! So, from the last explosion, I was able to work out where the flames were going to spread next, and that particular building corner was right next to where an air shaft would be. And of course, everyone knows that as soon as fire gets into an air shaft, it just goes woooosh~ and then bang!"
Sunny then looked at Midoriya expectantly.
"Erm," He stuttered out, "I don't know if everyone does know that?"
Sunny scratched her chin, "Oh."
"How do you know that?"
Suddenly, Sunny looked sheepish, "I've seen a lot of floor plans in my time... Okay, so that was a bad example! Let's say the collapsing floor then-"
Midoriya had never seen Sunny so excited about anything. Her previous groggy state had been swept away by her enthusiasm as she rattled on at him.
"Using how much the floor weighed, minus what was missing, versus what was still above me and where it was still standing on weakened pressure points, I was able to work out roughly how long I had before the floor gave way," Sunny nodded excitedly at Izuku who had visibly paled, but she didn't seem to notice and she continued, "accounting in the weakened structure and the missing support walls – from there, I had a little window, and that's when I used my hearing to listen out for the noises around me. Thankfully, Midnight had just helped me zone on specific sounds more, otherwise, maybe that would have been trickier... I can also pick up slight vibrations and changes in light, so the fire actually helped there I suppose because it magnifies even the smallest of movements..."
Sunny then trailed off, and then she grinned brightly and Midoriya, "See?" She pressed excitedly, "Do you understand?"
Izuku just gaped for a moment, "I understand that you use maths, Sugawara!" He then heaved. How could she possibly know how much the floor would weigh? Does she know technical details about specific building materials? How could she possibly know all of this?
"Oh, yes!" She bobbed her head, "I love maths. That's what I use. Putting my surroundings into numbers makes it much easier to understand. Unfortunately, you can't do that with people..."
Izuku wheezed.
And Sunny continued, "You can basically tell the future using maths. I don't know the words for it, but I can work out a building and put it into numbers – from there I can work out how long it would take to fall, or to crumble from certain locations, or even roughly how much power I would need to plough through it myself! Of course, other factors can change the outcome – but that makes it more fun to work out!"
"And you do this... instantly?" Midoriya clarified, eyes bugging out slightly at the revelation that Sunny Sugawara was a genius. This was the same girl who just last week plastered herself up against the whiteboard in the middle of science class because a shadow of a pigeon swung across it.
This was the same girl who chased peoples watch reflections around on the wall.
This was the same girl who made fart noises in tests.
Sunny nodded again, "Uh-huh! It's fun!" She then giggled gleefully, "It's like I'm a little detective," She mimed having a magnifying glass, "looking for ways not to get squished."
Midoriya just ogled at her for a long moment. Thinking about it, their maths classes was one of the few she shared with them, and she often came out with outrageous accusations about things that he and everyone else just assumed she'd made up.
Not long after finding out about Bakugo's quirk, and a short while after making fun of him for how gross it was, she started sprouting out how if his sweat was that much like nitro-glycerine, then it would take him thirty-four minutes to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool with it. She had then joked how he could drown people in it.
Midoriya had been there when this conversation took place, and just assumed she'd plucked that number out of thin air because how could someone possibly know that? Did she really work out how much nitro-glycerine would be needed to create the size of his explosions and then how long it would take for him to fill a pool based on those numbers?
There's no way. That whole conversation was about fifteen seconds. Izuku couldn't even begin to guess how much nitro-glycerine one would need to make any sized explosion... Should he be concerned that she knew that sort of information?
But so, it seemed, Sunny knew all sorts of seemingly useless pieces of information.
"That... That's amazing..." He muttered, catching her attention once more as it had drifted off again. She grinned again at him, and once again they settled into a comfortable silence.
It had only been a few minutes, and Midoriya had just started drawing out something Sunny just described when the door buzzer ringing through the apartment startled them both.
"Do people visit you a lot?" Izuku asked as he trailed behind Sunny.
She just laughed, "You have no idea..."
She pressed the video connection button on the intercom, half expecting it to be Denki or Mina, especially seeing as she still hadn't fixed her mobile phone problem.
But when Bakugo's blank face popped up on the camera, she couldn't catch herself before she popped out a: "Suki?"
He had been staring at something intently on the ground, but the sound of her voice made him snap his head up. Fortunately, there was no camera on Sunny's end, otherwise, he would have seen Midoriya's troubled expression peering over Sunny's shoulders.
"Suki?" Midoriya asked quietly, but then his eyes bugged out when he saw Bakugo, "Kacchan?!"
Bakugo's expression went from blank, to confused, to full-on raging rabbit in a matter of seconds.
"What the fuck, Sugawara?!" He seethed, pressing his palms up on the wall either side of the camera and looming over it, "What the hell is that shitty Deku doing here?!"
From behind her, she heard Izuku squeak and drop to the floor.
"He came to visit me," She stated matter-of-factly.
"Let me up," Bakugo growled, leering down at the camera more.
"No!" She snapped.
"I need to talk to you..." His voice was low and gravelly, his red eyes shifting away from the camera.
The sudden soft tone in his voice made Sunny's heart plummet, "About what?"
"I need to talk to you, privately. Without that nosey little shit."
Sunny scowled. She opened her mouth to comment back but Izuku's voice from the floor interpreted her, "I-I should go..."
"No!" She snapped, swinging around to him, "You stay here! I'm going downstairs!" She stomped towards her front door and swung it open. Before she slammed it behind her, she shot over her shoulder, "I'm sorry for yelling at you, Izuku! I didn't mean to!" She was still shouting, but she slammed the door behind her and disappeared down the hall.
She took the stairs, positioned behind a door to the left of the lift. She swung over the rails and scaled-down the stairs two flights at a time. She completely ignoring the burning in her knees and ankles when she landed a little too heavily on the ground floor.
She then made her way into the lobby and towards the front door. Through the frosted glass, she could see the dark silhouette of Bakugo sat on the steps in his hoodie, and she quickly found herself plopping down and joining him on the other side of the stair.
