We cut our interview with Brudos short and head out. I am walking in front of Tench and Ford as we head down a stairwell. "How the hell did he hear from Kemper, without anyone knowing about?"
Tench shrugs, "or maybe not one thought we needed to know."
Ford shakes his head, "fuck if I know. But we should find out."
"Well, yeah." I nod. "It's going to affect the study if they are all pen pals."
"I'll call the superintendent at Vacaville." Tench nods.
"Or let's just go back and ask." Ford suggests. Tench and I stop in the main lobby, turning to look at Ford, "What are the chances the warden's gonna know what's going on?"
I look over to Tench before signing my badge and gun out, "You should call."
"Do you really think that Kemper called us idiots?"
Tench shakes his head, "it doesn't sound like Ed to me."
We head back to the airport and board the plane, Ford not dropping the Kemper thing. "Maybe we can phone Kemper, ask him directly."
I chuckle, "if he called you idiots?"
Ford drops his shoulders as he looks over to me, "if he talks to Brudos."
"Then you would be idiots."
"Excuse me."
"You would take something Brudos said at more than face value. He was just trying to get under your skin." I shake my head and start reading a magazine.
"You think so?"
"I know so." I chuckle softly, "he tried it with all of us. Don't let him get to you." As we fly back home we start going over the files again, i find a photo of a woman in an ad and look over to Holden, "Holden, odd question, but does this turn you on?"
"Hmm?"
"I mean, it's sexy, right?"
"Well no."
"But how different is it from this?" I pull out one of the 'modelling' photos Brudos had taken.
"I'd say it's pretty different."
"To us, maybe. But some of these could be in Playboy, easy. Maybe even movies or tv."
Tench nods, "classic damsel in distress."
Ford shakes his head, "Are you two saying that advertising creates psychos? All men are pervs?"
I shake my head and chuckle, "no, but all men have the same universal trigger… Sex."
Tench nods, "I'm sure Wendy has a theory."
"But this?" This is how we get to him." I gesture to a photo of a shoe in the file.
When we get back to Quantico the next morning Carr is waiting for us. She listens to the Brudos tape while we unpack some of the files. "Fascinating."
"You think so?" Tench crosses his arms.
"Hypoglycemia? Is he lying or denying?"
I lift my right hand, "my vote's lying."
"We can learn from what he doesn't tell us."
Ford shrugs, "maybe."
I shake my head, "Wendy's right. We aren't always going to get someone like Kemper."
"Well, yeah, the whole talking to Kemper thing."
Tench sighs, "We called around. There's no evidence they were in touch."
"Which doesn't mean they haven't."
"God, if only…" i shake my head, "if they are it could screw up this whole thing."
"Really?" Carr looks over to me.
Ford nods, "how is the study valid if our subjects can compare notes?"
"Wouldn't it be… Cross contamination?" I shrug.
"What would these two guys talk about?" Carr shakes her head. "Would Brudos share with Kemper everything he's done? These are two organized killers, but they're on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes out what they'll admit. Kemper is overly forthcoming. Brudos denies everything even when confronted with evidence. It's a new behavior to sort by: post-conviction admission or non-admission of guilt."
I laugh softly, "you're excited about this."
"I am." Carr nods.
Tench shakes his head, "he didn't get anything useful out of that prick."
"I'm telling you, you did."
"Maybe in an academic sense, but this isn't only about your study."
"My study? Once we've collected all the data we can all apply it."
"You, mean, in four years?"
Carr stands up and walks out of her office, "I need coffee." we all walk out with her, "you know the way he lies is very interesting."
"How so?" I ask, walking next to Carr.
"Well, it's just so exaggerated. He can't possibly expect you to believe him."
"We called him on a lie, showed him evidence, and that ended the interview." Ford nods.
"So don't back him into a corner."
"Guys," Tench shakes his head, "post-conviction sorting? What good is that? We need pre-apprehension info, not post."
"You know, Bill, all categories are important for cross-referencing and sorting. I bet you dinner that this guy's got more to add."
"You read the story of about the girl he held at knifepoint when he was 15?" Ford looks over to me.
I nod, "yeah, he made her undress, took pictures, locked her in a corncrib. Then pretended to be his own twin brother."
"Right, and he talked all about Jerry."
"That shows how fucked up he is." Tench nods.
I shrug, "maybe. There's something about disguise, pretending to be someone else. It gives him room for what?"
"He said he started blacking out when his kids were small." Carr shrugs, "So he isn't averse to talking about his family. Bill, you could talk about your son."
"No." Tench shakes his head.
"Try."
"I'm not discussing my son with him."
"Well, you don't have to talk about your family. You can make one up. It's just about building rapport. And he asked for stuff, cigarettes and pizza. Indulge him." Carr suggests, making her coffee, before she walks away.
I sigh and look over to Tench and Ford. "When do you want to go back?"
"I don't." Tench shakes his head.
"Next week?" Ford shrugs.
"Sure." I nod.
We head about to our 'office' and start on that day's work. Before long Tench calls out, "Holden, Nancy, I asked a buddy of mine with the Portland PD. You might want to…" Tench picks up his phone, "on two." Fod and I pick up our phones and dial into line two.
"Hello? A woman answers.
"Mrs. Cooke?"
Ford puts the phone to his shoulder and whispers, "who's Mrs. Cooke?"
"Yes?" The woman responds.
"Mrs. Darcie Cooke?" Tench asks.
"Yes?"
"Hi. My name is Bill Tench, I'm with the FBI."
"Is this about Jer?"
"About your ex-husband, Mr. Brudos."
"Am I required to talk to you?"
"Well, no, but I only have a couple of questions."
"I'm sorry, I changed my last name for a reason." The line disconnects.
"She said, 'is this about Jer.'"
"Jer?" Ford smiles as he puts his jacket on.
I look over to Ford, "heading out?"
"Yeah, I have plans with Debbie this afternoon."
"Alright, have fun."
"You too, call if you need anything." Ford quickly leaves.
I start to go over the transcript again, since I had been the one to convert it. Tench chuckles a few minutes after Ford leaves, "somebody's jealous."
I chuckle, "jealous of what?"
"Debbie." Tench looks up to me.
"You're insane."
"Am I? I see the way you look at Holden day in and day out. If you can't admit you're jealous you're in more denial then Brudos."
