Chapter 25
Elven Matters
Shinji was lead by Aranel through the thicket of trees that ended in a large open area. He noticed several guards, some wearing armor with shields and lances, and others in leather outfits equipped with bows and arrows. And some of them had crossbows.
Aranel lead Shinji through the open area through a large gate that lead to a courtyard. The courtyard was different than Aranel's house, more like an intricate garden with plants he had never seen before. The first row of plants he passed were white and silver looking, and even some gold ones. Passing through the garden was another set of plants that looked more colorful. Bright blue and pink. The third row of plants they passed were bright red and yellow. He also noticed some gardeners going around and taking care of the garden.
The pair walked towards a large stone wall that looked like it was just a large rock. The guards paused for a second, reciting some strange words, before walking into the wall itself. Aranel motioned for Shinji to follow him, the pair walking through the wall like they were ghosts.
Shinji realized that the wall was another security device to protect the royalty of the Elves.
The pair stepped into a small waiting area where Shinji noticed several more guards. Some on a higher level above them.
'Good security.' Shinji thought as he took note of nearly a dozen archers.
A tall and distinguished elf, dressed in fine wine-colored clothes, came out to greet them.
"Lord Aranel, the queen is expecting you with the healer. Is he the one?" The distinguished elf asked in elven, to which Aranel replied with a simple yes.
The distinguished elf then lead them into a large hall which was decorated elaborately with paintings of elves that made Shinji think of Europe during the Renaissance period. The walls were heavily colored in red and black, the ceiling looked like it was intricate gold, and there were three long carpets that were plush green in color. Two carpets were on the sides of the hall, while the third in the middle lead directly to the throne at the end of the hall. The elaborate and large silver throne sat on a raised platform, sitting on red carpets. There were richly decorated curtains draped to the sides of the throne. Shinji wondered if some Renaissance artist or architect was reincarnated as an elf long ago and designed the place. The paintings on the walls depicted the previous kings and queens with their families and some paintings had warriors in them, Echidna was on one of the paintings, which made Shinji wonder about the dark elf.
They were lead to the throne where an elegantly dressed woman in a bright green and blue dress was sitting. Shinji noticed that the woman was wearing a thick dark veil that covered half of her face. She had a golden crown on her head that looked more like a tiara, with silver flowers and a green jewel in the center. There was also a beautiful silver staff with a large red jewel next to her.
Aranel bent down on one knee, and Shinji followed suit.
"Rise, my friend." A cultured voice said.
The pair did as the woman looked at them both. Shinji could feel her eyes wandering over him.
"Is this the healer you spoke of?" The queen asked.
"Yes, your majesty." Aranel said. "His name is Shinji Ikari."
The queen rose from her throne and walked down the steps until she was right in front of Shinji.
Shinji wasn't sure what to do in this regard. He was unfamiliar with elven etiquette so he just remained where he was.
"I am sure that Aranel told you why I have summoned you here." The queen said. "The first was to thank you for helping to destroy those Iron Worms that attacked our village. But I also summoned you for a personal matter." She said as she removed her veil.
Shinji stayed silent, but his eyes widened when he saw the rather large scars on her face. They looked like some kind of claw marks, but it also looked like something had either burnt or melted her face as well. Her left eye was also damaged and appeared to be blind.
"I have had these scars for many years. A sorcerer used a magically enchanted bear claw in an attempt to kill me. This was all he managed to achieve, before I slew him. Can you help me?" The queen asked hopefully.
"Appraise." Shinji said and read her status.
[Name: Shiki Hala Sylphy. Age: 478 years. Race: High Elf. Condition: Burn Claw Mark. Required chant: Recovery.]
"I can help, but I have to touch you. May I?" Shinji asked.
"You may." The queen said.
Shinji reached up and touched her face, to which she didn't react in any way. He chanted 'Recovery' and the power of his healing started repairing the damage that was done to her long ago. The queen tensed as the pleasant feeling of his power healed her face. Within seconds, the marks were gone, her left eye could see again and all that remained was her beautiful elven features.
She pulled out a small mirror from her pocket and looked at her healed face.
Shinji finally took notice that she looked like she was a woman in her 20s, with long blond hair and red eyes, which reminded him of Rei Ayanami.
"Shinji, I thank you for this. I do not have to hide my face anymore and I can see clearly again. What kind of reward do you want?" The queen asked.
"I... don't know your majesty. I have more then enough money and there really isn't anything that I want." He replied.
"I cannot let you walk out of here without rewarding you for this. You have done something that no other healer could. And I fear that Goddess Lianna's wrath will befall on my people if I do not show my gratitude to her vassal." The queen protested.
"I assure you that Goddess Lianna won't be angry with you." Shinji said.
"My queen, may I speak?" Aranel said.
"What is it?" Shiki asked.
"Could we present him the ring of elven friendship? This morning he freed Echidna from her curse." Aranel said.
"He lifted Echidna's curse? His healing powers can lift curses as well?" The queen asked in surprise.
"Indeed they can. Echidna walked out of the safe room and no monsters appeared. This was after the Iron Worms attacked the village. Shinji succeeded where all others failed." Aranel replied.
"Then I agree with you. Shinji, what kind of magic affinities do you have?" The queen said.
"I have affinities for water and darkness magic, your majesty." He answered.
"Tome, brings us a ring with proper magic stones." She ordered the elf who had lead them to the throne room. Shinji had forgotten that he was right behind him, since he was standing right in front of the queen.
"At once." Tome said and left.
"Shinji, do you know what the ring of elven friendship is?" The queen asked.
"No, your majesty." He replied.
"The ring serves as proof that you are a friend of the elves and therefore you can freely enter this village. And it is also made from silver mithril, a rare form of mithril with a high mana conductivity. You can store magic in the ring and use the stored magic to cast spells without draining the mana in your body." Shiki explained.
"I gladly accept your generous reward your majesty." He said.
"And also, would you be interested to live in our village? A healer like you with a power over metal would be most welcomed here." The queen added.
"I'm afraid not your majesty. I wish to travel the kingdom with Ayl and my lovers and help others as well." He answered.
"I understand. But if we need you, we will send a request for help." Shiki said.
"If you need help, then I'll gladly come. But may I ask you something?" Shinji asked.
"What is it?" The queen asked.
"I wish to know about Echidna. Is she a hero in your kingdom?" He asked. "I ask because I saw one of the paintings that looked exactly like her."
The Queen smiled as she recalled that painting.
"Echidna saved my fathers life 400 years ago from some monsters. She also trained me in magic. If you wish to know more about her, then you should ask her yourself." The queen answered.
Aranel had kept a close eye on Shinji the whole time and was slightly impressed by his manners. He was sure that he wouldn't speak rudely to the queen, and he had been presentable and respectable the whole time.
Tome returned and was holding a silver ring with a small blue and purple gem. The queen took the ring and said: "Shinji Ikari, I present you the ring of elven friendship, the highest honor that we elves grant humans. Wear it with pride." She said and handed the ring to him.
Shinji looked over the ring, which had beautiful engravings on it unlike he had ever seen. He watched as the ring changed size, to fit his own hand, as he held it. He placed the ring on his right ring finger and said: "Thank you, your majesty."
"I only ask you that when your time comes you ensure that the ring is returned here." She said.
"I will your majesty." He replied.
"And I have another request for you Shinji." The queen said.
"How can I help?" He asked.
"My peoples greatest songstress is returning to the village tomorrow or day after tomorrow. She is stricken with a sickness that makes her unable to sing. I would like you to heal her when she returns." The queen explained.
"I would be glad to help her. But I wish to hear her singing with my lovers." He said.
"That much is acceptable. I will summon you and your lovers once she returns." The queen said.
"My queen, may I bring my daughter and wife along to hear her singing as well?" Aranel asked.
"Of course. I thank you both for coming today. I am sure you have other duties to attend." The queen said with a small bow to the pair.
"Yes, your majesty. Come along Shinji." Aranel said and lead the boy out of the mansion.
Shinji sighed silently in relief. He had been worried the whole time that he would insult the queen unknowingly and get in trouble.
"I must say Shinji, you behaved quite well in her majesty's presence." Aranel complimented.
"I was so nervous!" Shinji admitted.
"First meetings with a queen can do that. I was also quite nervous when I met the king for the first time." He said.
"Could you tell me more about the songstress the queen mentioned?" Shinji asked, wanting to change the topic.
"Her name is Daena Elenwe. Out of all the songstress in our history, her voice is the most beautiful. But she became sick six years ago and has been unable to sing. She has visited the healers in other villages in hopes that someone could find a cure for her sickness but no medicine she has tried has worked. And right now she is meeting a healer in the village I visited but I doubt that his medicine works. But your powers can cure her, that I have no doubt." Aranel explained.
"And how beautiful is her voice?" Shinji asked, now interested about the elven songstress.
"You have to hear it yourself to understand. When you cure her, you get to hear something no other human has ever heard." Aranel said.
"No other human has heard?" He asked curiously.
"Trust me on that." Aranel said with a smile.
"I can't wait." Shinji excitedly. He would get to meet and listen the singing of an elven songstress that no human has ever seen or heard before. The idea made him impatient and excited.
They arrived back to the entrance of the pathway where Shinji's lovers and Brighid were waiting, but he also noticed the border guard Aeson with them.
"I'm telling you, Shinji and Ayl are not like that!" Tia shouted to the elf.
"I find it hard to believe." Aeson said.
"Why do you even care!?" Lilia shouted.
"What's going on here?" Shinji asked Brighid.
"Apparently this elf has an axe to grind with you." The Ranger answered.
"So you're the so-called apprentice of Ayl?" Aeson stated.
"Not so-called. I am the apprentice of Ayl." Shinji countered.
"And what makes you worthy of her?" Aeson asked.
Shinji cocked an eyebrow at hearing that.
"She saw potential in me." Shinji answered.
"I find it difficult to believe that she would see any value in a lowly human like you. You are not even half the warrior than Vanir was." Aeson declared.
"Considering that he was older and had far more experience, I'd say that's true. Regardless, Ayl chose me to be her apprentice, and her opinion matters more to me than yours." Shinji replied.
Aeson pulled his sword out of its sheath and leveled it at Shinji's chest.
"You are unworthy of her, and I will prove it!" He declared as he swung his sword at Shinji.
'Irrational much?' Shinji thought as he managed to dodge the sword. He pulled his Ulaks from behind his back, and began deflecting the attacks.
Aranel didn't like the looks of this. Regardless, this was a duel between two people, and they had to settle it. Despite the pettiness of the situation. He groaned when he realized what Ayl might think about this whole affair.
Shinji deflected the elfs sword once again. Aeson pulled back and thrust his blade forward, right as Shinji threw up his Ulaks, deflecting the blade away from his chest and sending it over his shoulder on the left side. This caused Aeson and Shinji to come face-to-face with each other.
"I have no quarrel with you!" Shinji declared.
"Well I have one with you!" Aeson said as he pulled back and kicked Shinji in the stomach.
The young champion fell backwards, the wind knocked out of him as Aeson advanced upon him quickly and stabbed him in the arm.
Aranel winced as he saw the wound, so did Tia and the others.
Shinji groaned as he stared at his wound after Aeson had pulled the sword out. The elven guard grinned smugly.
Shinji's lovers were panicked. They wanted to rush to his aid. Aranel had to keep them back.
"Don't. This is for Shinji and him alone." He said to them.
Aeson moved in on Shinji again, before Shinji threw his hand out. Aeson was suddenly thrown backwards, as if an invisible force tossed him across the yard.
"Recovery." Shinji said as the wound on his arm was instantly healed.
"I'm Going To Kill You!" Aeson shouted as he charged towards the human.
"STOP!" A voice suddenly shouted, causing everyone to pause.
"What? Captain?" Aeson gasped as an older-looking, regal and armored elf appeared in the courtyard with several other armored elves behind him.
"What is the meaning of this?" Captain Lidan, head of the queen's guard, asked.
"A personal matter between me and this so-called apprentice of Ayl." Aeson declared.
"Again, Aeson?" Lidan asked. "It wasn't enough that Ayl rebuffed you after Vanir died, but now you pick a fight with her apprentice."
"He's a human! He is not worthy of her!" Aeson shouted.
"That is for her to decide. And besides, you cannot harm him. He has the ring of elven friendship." Lidan said to him.
"WHAT?!" Aeson shouted in shock.
Shinji showed him the ring.
Aeson stared at it for several stunned seconds.
"Tome just informed me. Queen Shiki herself presented him the ring, for healing her injuries and for lifting Echidna's curse." Lidan said.
"He... what?" Aeson gasped. 'This human has the favor of our queen, of Ayl, AND Echidna?!'
"He also has the full blessings of the God of Metal and the Goddess of Healing." Aranel added.
Aeson's eyes just went wide.
He was blessed by the Gods as well?
"We'll take it from here." Lidan said as two of his guards grabbed Aeson by his arms and pulled him along with them.
Shinji couldn't help but hope that Aeson was going to get a good talking to.
"Shinji... why didn't you use your powers right from the start?" Tia asked as she rushed to him.
"I... wanted to know just how good Aeson was." He said sheepishly.
"Was that the only reason?" Tia asked.
"Well, I didn't want him to think he was doing badly." Shinji said.
"Badly? He was trying to kill you." Hana said.
"Yes, but if I had over-powered him right from the start, he would feel even worse." He replied.
The girls just looked at each other in confusion.
Shinji groaned when he realized they had no idea what he was talking about.
While they might have understood about a warriors pride, it would be harder to explain about bruised egos and hurt feelings. He had nothing against Aeson, so it made little sense to humiliate him at all.

After riding back to Aranel's house, Lilia started asking questions when Ayl's father went to take the horses to the stables.
"What did you talk about with the queen?" The Pantherian archer asked excitedly.
"I want to tell Ayl as well, so wait for a moment." Shinji replied as he opened the door.
Opening the door, he was greeted with a sight of Ayl lying on the couch.
"Ayl?" Shinji called out.

He did as asked and came next to her. His mentor looked worn out.
"What's wrong Ayl?" He asked.
"Nothing. Echidna always just tires me out with her antics." She replied.
Shinji laughed to her comment. Misato had a similar effect on him whenever they were in her apartment.
"She wanted to do so much today. Make up for lost time, she said. Argh!" Ayl groaned.
Shinji just laughed as he looked at his lovers, all of whom had amused expressions.
"She was stuck in that room for 80 years, Ayl. I can't even imagine how relieved she was to be out. To enjoy and experience life again, the world around her that she was cut off from. It had to be boring just sitting in that room with nothing to do. Immortal or not." Shinji explained.
He did wonder, if she had been so quick to get into the concealment room to escape those monsters, that she hadn't taken anything with her. Any of her weapons, or equipment or even any of her 'rewards' from previous quests and missions. Not even a childs toy to play with. He couldn't imagine how boring it must have been doing nothing for 80 years.
"I know, it's just... Argh!" Ayl groaned.
Shinji just smiled at his mentor.
"Anyway, I brought you paper and ink. You can start drawing the dartboard now." She said, pointing at the table where 2 sheets of paper and a bottle of ink were.
"Alright!" he smiled.
"Oh and how was your meeting with the queen?" She asked.
"I want to know as well." Lilia said, joining in.
"What did she give you as a reward?" Hana asked.
"Well this is what happened." He started telling them about his meeting with the elven queen.
"You're kidding Shinji." Ayl said when he was done with the explanation.
"About what?" He asked.
"That the queen allows you and your lovers to listen to Daena's singing." Ayl said.
"Is her voice really that beautiful?" Tia asked.
"I heard her singing once before she became sick and I thought that I could listen to her voice forever." Ayl replied.
"I hope she comes back soon. Because now I can't wait to hear her singing." Lilia said excitedly.
"I'm also pretty curious now. She must really be something." Brighid commented.
"Your father also asked if he could bring you and your mother with him to hear Daena's singing." Shinji added.
"Did he now? I have to thank him then. Because I have also missed hearing her voice." Ayl said, secretly looking forward to it.
"Then I'll sit next to you when she sings." Hana said suddenly.
"Rock paper scissors Lilia." Tia said.
"I won't lose to you. Best of three." Lilia said, understanding that Shinji's other side was the prize of the game.
"YAY!" Lilia shouted when she won with a rock.
"Shit." Tia said, expertly hiding her feeling of defeat.
While his lovers were competing, Shinji had started drawing the dartboard and dart on the paper. Hana stared at the drawing he was making and was impressed by the details of the board he was making. Though Shinji found it a bit difficult to draw with a quill.
Tia and Lilia also came over to watch what he was doing and felt jealous and impressed that their man could draw so well. When he finished the drawings 15 minutes later, the girls started asking questions.
"What is that Shinji?" Hana asked.
"Is it a target?" Tia asked.
"It's a dartboard that I came up with. It's game that you play like this." Shinji started explaining the dartboard to them.
"I want to try it." Tia said, looking interested.
"I want to try it as well. It sounds fun. Maybe we could have one at the Inn as well." Hana said excitedly.
"We can try it when the blacksmith and the carpenter make the board and the darts. But I need something to eat now." Shinji said, feeling a bit famished because of his meeting with the queen and his fight with Aeson.
"There's some sandwiches you can eat." Ayl said as she continued her nap.
Half an hour later Shinji had eaten his late lunch with his lovers and then Tia asked: "What are you going to do now Shinji?"
"I was thinking of taking a nap. I still have to meet Echidna later and I think it's going to be a rather tiring meeting." He replied.
"You are not allowed to fall in love with her!" His 3 lovers shouted suddenly in unison.
He was taken back by their sudden outburst. "Don't worry, I won't fall in love with her. And she doesn't seem like the type who would fall in love with someone so easily." Shinji said, trying to calm them down.
"He's right actually. I've known Echidna for a long time and I have never seen her infatuated with someone, and anyone who has known her longer has said the same thing." Ayl added.
His lovers sighted in relief. To them Echidna would have been too dangerous a rival, so the fact that she wouldn't get serious about Shinji was reassuring.
"I'll take a nap with you." Lilia said and grabbed his arm.
"Me as well." Tia said and grabbed his free arm.
"Hey! What about me!" Hana complained.
"You can sleep with him later." Tia said.
"Ayl, we need to talk." Aranel said, who had appeared suddenly next to the couch.
"What is it?" Ayl asked.
"Shinji had a fight with Aeson." He said. "Actually, Aeson picked the fight."
Ayl sighted. "Him again. Tell me everything." Ayl said and Aranel started explaining.
Upstairs, Lilia and Tia had snuggled against Shinji as he proceeded to fall asleep. Lilia snuggled quite deeply against him while Tia pressed herself lightly against him.

"You'll be fine Shinji. With your healing powers, you have nothing to worry about." Ayl assured him.
He felt better with Ayl's assurance. They continued walking though a small path that lead them though the woods.
"What is that house by the pond anyway?" Shinji asked, not liking the silence.
"My parents used it as a love nest hundreds of years ago. Now we use it mostly when we go swimming." She replied.
"How good is Echidna?" He asked.
"Let's just say that finding someone who is as experienced as her would be next to impossible." She answered.
