"Tohru! Are you okay?!"
He flung open the door to see Tohru collapsed on the floor. "Shit! Tohru!" He quickly turned off the water, wrapping her in a towel. He felt her forehead. She didn't feel hot. What should he do? They were at least 30 minutes from a hospital, and he couldn't carry her on his back the whole way. Right, Hatori!
He picked up her limp body and carried her to the bed. Grabbing his phone, he quickly dialed Hatori.
"Hat-"
"Hatori! Torhu passed out in the shower and there was blood on the sheets and it's not her period and-"
"Calm down, Kyo. I'm on my way now, but I need you to do a few things for me, okay?"
"Okay, what?"
"Is she breathing?" Kyo could see the slight rise and fall of her chest.
"Yes!"
"Good. Now I need you to check for any injury. Is she currently bleeding, particularly from her head?" He pushed aside her wet hair.
"No, I don't think so."
"Good. You're doing good, Kyo. I'm not far. How long has she been unconscious?"
"I dont know! Um, maybe 4 minutes now? I called as soon as I got her to the bed."
"Okay, try to tickle her feet. Tell me if she responds at all." Kyo did as told, but Tohru stayed completely still.
"She didn't do anything!"
"Stay calm, Kyo. She's still breathing. I'm pulling in now." The line went dead.
Kyo could feel his heart sinking. No! How? Why?!
Within a minute, Hatori entered the room. Kyo stepped back tentatively, giving him space to work.
"Hand me a pillow." He instructed. Kyo quickly followed his orders, and Hatori placed the pillow under her legs.
"I'm going to remove the towel so it's not constricting blood flow. Give me something warm and dry to cover her with. Hatori did as he said, and although she was exposed, neither man cared. Soon, Kyo returned with a fleece lap blanket.
"Tohru!" Hatori shouted, making Kyo jump. No response. Hatori reached into his bag, pulling out a capsule, breaking it, and holding it to her nose.
Immediately, Tohru's eyes sprang open, as she began to cough.
"What was that?!" Kyo shouted.
"Ammonia inhalant. Please, stay back. Tohru, it's me, Hatori." Once she was finished coughing, she looked at him dazed.
"Hatori?"
"Yes, do you know where you are right now?"
She looked around the room. "The cabin?"
"Where?"
"In Hokkaido."
"Good, do you have any pain anywhere?"
"My head hurts a little. She reached for what was becoming a lump on her forehead. But mostly, my stomach hurts."
"Okay. I'm going to take your vitals, then some blood. After that I'm going to do a neuroexam, understand?" She nodded slowly. As he began to wrap the blood pressure cuff around her arm, he spoke again.
"Do you know how you got here?"
"No. I know that I started to feel dizzy and my tummy was hurting really bad. Kyo was asking about my period.."
"112 over 76, pulse 102. Great pressure, okay pulse. Ox sat is 97%. Temperature 97.8 Fahrenheit. Okay, are you on your period?"
"No. It's not for another two weeks."
Hatori's gaze shifted to Kyo. "Why did you ask?" A lump formed in Kyo's throat. "You need to tell me." Hatori pressed.
"Because there was blood. On the sheets. After we..." Kyo looked away.
"Was there a lot of blood?"
"No, not really. It just worried me. She's never bled before. Not even our first time."
"That's okay, her hymen probably broke another way." Hatori shifted on the bed, organizing his equipment for drawing blood. "Were you particularly rough?"
Kyo's face blanched and Tohru turned her head.
"Had you been rough before?"
"Y-yes.." Kyo answered truthfully, remembering the cherry blossom tree and the onsen.
"She didn't bleed then?"
"No!"
"I see."
After Hatori completed his neuro exam, he determined the chance of brain damage unlikely. "Let me run some tests with her blood. I'll be back."
"Is she safe if you go? Is it bad?"
Hatori sighed before facing Kyo. "I can't say. But personally, I don't believe it's life threatening. Could be many things. Low blood sugar, anemia, exhaustion. I'll know more once I run my tests."
Hatori walked away with his vials in hand, returning from his car with several pieces of lab equipment. He really did come prepared.
Kyo moved to the bed, rubbing his thumb over Tohru's forehead.
"You really scared me." He mumbled.
"I'm sorry, Kyo. It all happened so quick."
"I thought I hurt you. I just..." Kyo stopped, picturing her lying unconscious on the shower floor.
"Are you cold?" He asked, trying to distract himself. Tohru looked down.
"I'm naked! Did Hatori see me naked?"
Kyo let out a small laugh. "He's a doctor, Tohru. He doesn't care. He was trying to make sure you were safe. But if you want, I can get you some clothes and help you change."
Tohru nodded, still slightly upset by the news. After helping her change into some fleece pajamas, there was a small knock on the door.
"May I come in?" Hatori asked.
"Yes, I'm decent." Tohru replied. Hatori opened the door slowly, taking a careful seat on the chair in the corner.
"Miss Honda, I think I have some answers for you. You do indeed have anemia."
"What's anemia?"
"Low iron in your blood."
"Okay, so what does that mean?" Kyo spoke up.
"Well, it could be the reason she fainted."
Kyo knew he had more to say. "But...?"
"But," Hatori continued. "I believe that the anemia is due to the fact that Miss Honda is pregnant."
A long silence fell on the room.
"Wait, you ran a pregnancy test?"
"Yes."
"And it was positive?"
"Yes."
"What are the chances that its wrong?"
Hatori sighed again.
"Its a blood test, Kyo. I looked for the existence of hCG in the bloodstream. That hormone is only present during pregnancy. She's pregnant."
"But, I'm on birth control!" Tohru protested, finding her voice.
"The pill can be anywhere from 91 to 99 percent effective depending on how you take it. Which means that, even if you take it perfectly, there is still a chance of pregnancy."
Another pause.
"...How far along is she?"
"Judging by how much of the hormone I found, I would say about 6 weeks. I would need an ultrasound to confirm gestational age. This could also explain her warmer body temperature and spotting. Have you been experiencing any nausea or appetite gain?"
Tohru thought back to the night of their fight and her strange compulsion to eat. "Yes.."
After a brief pause, Hatori stood.
"Well, I'm sure you will have more questions for me. For now, I'll let you two talk. And Tohru? Please cease taking your birth control." With that, he left the room.
Tohru had never felt more frightened in her life. She was still so young! And she just got engaged. Besides, she didn't know how Kyo would respond. Was he angry with her? With her head down, she reached for his hand.
In a split second, he pulled it away, instead pulling her into his arms. She started to sob against his shoulder.
"Kyo... I'm so sorry..."
"Shh, none of that. You don't need to be sorry..." He gently stroked her hair.
"But Kyo, I'm scared.."
"So am I, but it's going to be okay." Her sobs grew louder and he began to rock her, a soothing rhythm that kept her from falling apart completely.
After five minutes, her sobs had nearly stopped.
"We... we're going to be parents.." she mumbled, wiping her nose with the back of her sleeve.
"Yea, I guess we are..."
Parents? Kyo didn't know how to be a parent. Not a good one, anyway. His parents.. well, he didn't really have parents. Not for long, anyway. He could feel fear begin to consume him.
Just then, an image of a brown haired little boy with amber eyes appeared in his head. He hung on Kyo's shoulders, hugging his neck. 'Daddy!' The little boy giggled.
Daddy. Oh my god. I'm going to be a dad. Tears began to trickle from Kyo's wide eyes.
"Kyo! You're crying!"
Kyo smiled warmly at his beautiful fiance, cupping her face in his hands. "We're going to be parents, Tohru." He said in admiration, pulling her into a soft kiss, suddenly melting away all of Tohru's fears.
They embraced each other tightly, slowly coming to grips with their new reality. Another knock fell on the door.
"I bought you some prenatal vitamins. Please take these daily. I'm also going to prescribe an iron supplement. I would like to do weekly exams throughout the pregnancy."
"That doesn't sound normal." Kyo noted, remembering his class discussion on pregnancy.
"Its not. Teens are at a higher risk of miscarriage, premature birth, preeclampsia, and stillbirth. Her anemia only increases these risks. Needless to say, this little fainting spell has me quite worried, especially if shes spotting and experiencing stomach pain."
Kyo and Tohru gazed into each others eyes, both dripping with concern.
"Okay, I can do that. Every week."
"Good. Do you have any questions for me?"
"Is, um.. is sex dangerous for the baby? Also, I had my period a few weeks ago.. so I'm confused how..." Hatori shrugged.
"As for the sex, no, not particularly. As long as you keep your iron up, its actually good to get the exercise. Just make sure that you are not causing direct harm to the stomach. If you feel dizzy, stop. It's simple. As for your period, it is possible to still have it following conception. Any more questions?"
Tohru seemed to accept his answers.
"Should we leave? Go home, I mean?" Kyo's hands were fidgeting in his lap.
"No. Not if you don't want to. Just keep her warm. Avoid icy hikes in the wilderness. Common sense goes a long way in a healthy pregnancy. If that's all, I think I'll take my leave. I need to brush up on my obstetrics." Hatori turned to leave.
"One more thing." He stopped. "Thank you, Hatori. For everything. You really are an amazing doctor."
A brief smile flashed across his lips before he walked out the door.
"Well this was unexpected." Kyo mumbled, rubbing his neck.
"So what now? Are we supposed to tell everyone?"
"I don't see why we should rush. I would rather tell them that we are engaged first."
"Yea, you're right.." Tohru winced, grabbing her stomach in pain.
"Tohru, are you okay? What do you need me to do?" Tohru shrugged him off, his heat making her uncomfortable.
"Can we get some food? I'm really hungry."
"Of course! What do you want to eat?"
"Sushi."
Kyo's face fell. "Sorry, Tohru, but I don't think you're allowed to eat raw fish."
Tohru smiled halfheartedly. "That's okay. How about Takoyaki?"
"You want fried food?"
Tohru nodded excitedly.
"It's not exactly healthy, you know."
Tohru's smile turned into a cold glare. Damn. This was 'random woman with the lipstick' level of glare. Kyo waved his hands up in apology.
"Okay, okay! Takoyaki! Anything else?"
"Tea please."
Kyo flinched. "I can buy you some tea without caffeine, but I don't know how it will taste." He muttered, apologetically.
She crossed her arms. "Okay. That's fine." It didn't look fine. "I also want some red bean mochi ice cream balls. If they have any."
Kyo was not about to comment on the fact that she wanted ice cream in the dead of winter. She had a smacking stick now, and an excuse to use it. He merely nodded, kissing her forehead before donning his coat and shoes.
At the convenience store, the front clerk, a middle aged woman, began to chuckle. "Looks like someone is pregnant."
Kyo jumped. "What? How could you tell?" He asked, surprised.
"I have four children. Caffeine free tea, fried food, ice cream... sounds like pregnancy to me. Judging by your age, I assume its your first?"
He nodded, embarrassed for some reason.
"You'd be amazed by how these little gestures will make her feel a million times better. Keep up the good work." She gave him a friendly smile before handing him his change.
That was odd.
On his way back, about a 20 minute walk, he heard a rustle in the trees. Nah, must be his imagination. Or some kind of animal. Still, he quickened his pace.
As he was approaching the drive he saw a figure from the corner of his eye. He mumbled something about needing more firewood and turned the corner around to the side of the cabin. As expected, the figure followed.
Upon turning the corner, Kyo delivered a quick kick to the stalkers abdomen.
"Why the hell are you following me?!" He shouted. Looking down, he saw Shigure, desperately clutching his stomach.
"Hel-lo Kyo.." He choked out.
"Shigure?! What the hell are you doing here?" Kyo yelled.
"Kyo? Is everything okay? I heard yelling." Tohru was standing at the corner of the house, wrapped up in a blanket. She looked down. "Shigure? Wait, what are you doing here?" She asked, ignoring the fact that he was curled up in a ball of pain. Chuckling, he stood.
"Why don't we talk inside?" He offered.
Inside, Kyo brewed Tohru a special cup of tea and heated up her takoyaki.
"So you're also vacationing here? Wow, that's such a coincidence! So cool!" Her eyes lit up in amazement.
Kyo scoffed. Yea, coincidence my ass.
"Anyway, I saw Kyo at the market and overheard his conversation with the attendant. Is it true? Are you pregnant, Tohru?"
Tohru dropped her takoyaki ball onto the plate, staring wide eyed between the two men.
"Yea, she's pregnant. We just found out today. But we don't want anyone to know yet, so keep your damn mouth shut."
"Oh, my lips are sealed." He made a gesture of locking his lips and throwing away the key. "But, why hide it?"
"Well.." Tohru fiddled with her cup. "Kyo and I just got engaged yesterday." Shigure raised an eyebrow, finally spotting the ring on her finger.
"My my. That's one hell of an engagement present." Shigure mused. "Listen, I won't tell anyone. But if you need anything while you're here, don't hesitate to ask me." He offered sincerely. Kyo thought back to what the cashier had said.
"Thanks, but I'll take care of her." He said, coldly. Shigure sighed, a slow smile forming on his lips.
"Very well, then. I'll be off. I only wanted to check on you two. I can see that you are doing well." After donning his shoes, he spoke again. "Oh, and Tohru. For your neck. Try some ice." With a smirk he was out the door.
"My neck? What's wrong with my neck?"
Kyo covered his flush face with one hand, mumbling under his breath.
"Bastard."
