Ladybeetle rushed towards Amber's house. The night air was cold but he enjoyed the feeling of it brushing through his hair, the wind running over his skin. The new moon sat high in the sky, only a vague outline showing.
The light of Amber's room shone out of the windows. Soft music was drifting from the open window. He landed on the windowpane, taking in the sight of her. She hadn't noticed him. Her long blonde hair flowed down her back as she ran her fingers over the keys. Her eyes closed as the melody took over her body. He knocked on the large window, not wanting to disturb her, but he felt awkward just watching without her knowing.
Amber jumped. "Oh! Ladybeetle, I didn't even notice you!" she smiled, sending butterflies into Ladybeetle's stomach. Ladybeetle stepped down, sitting next to her at the piano. He blushed as he looked over at her.
"What were you playing?" He asked as she strummed her fingers gently over the keys.
"Chopin," Ladybeetle tapped on a few keys, trying to copy what he had heard, making a slight dissonance. Amber giggled. "Here." She pressed one key and the sound resolved. The sound resonating in harmony somehow.
He took his hands off the keys as she began to play once again. He closed his eyes listening to the sweet melody. It seemed almost sad before she hit a key that sounded off. Amber sighed.
His leg brushed hers and he opened his eyes in a panic. She didn't seem to notice. Ladybeetle just now noticed her fingers. She stretched them, rubbing at her wrists. She must've been practicing most of the day. Amber stood, going to stand next to the window, looking out at the stars. He followed her with a worried glance.
Amber rested her chin in her hand. "Are you okay?" he was confused as to why she switched up so suddenly. She looked over to him.
"Yeah you just, remind me of someone I like," she smiled softly, staring into the night. His heart skipped a beat. Wait. He only reminded her of that person. That meant it wasn't him.
"Oh… who is it?" He laced his fingers together, his nails digging into the back of his hand. He knew he had no place to be jealous but he couldn't help it. He had liked Amber for so long now. He had finally gotten the courage to visit her as Ladybeetle.
"I can't tell you that silly!" She blushed at the thought of telling him her crush.
"What you don't trust me?" He leaned closer to her. She pouted.
"Of course I do, b-but this is a secret," she huffed.
"Fine," he turned away.
"Why do you look so down, Ladybeetle?" Amber smiled, back to her normal self as she elbowed him. "What's with that name anyway? He blushed.
"I-it was the first thing that came to mind…" He glared at her as his face reddened. She giggled, placing a hand on his bicep and all thoughts left his head.
"I like it, it fits you," he stared at her, smiling gently. Even if she did like someone else he was here with her now at this moment. "But I need sleep, I'm not a night owl like you," she began to push him out the window.
"I got it, I got it!" He crouched on the window sill. "Goodnight, Amber."
She waved to him. "Goodnight."
He left and she shut the window behind him. He would find out one way or another who her crush was.
Marin walked into school the next day. Alan was already in his seat. Amber hadn't shown up yet. "Hey," he directed to Nina and Alan. they both looked to her. "Has Amber said anything about a crush?" He asked innocently.
"Uhhhh," they both looked at each other. How were they supposed to explain that everyone but the two of them could tell they were both falling hard. "I-I haven't heard anything," Alan chuckled awkwardly.
"M-me either," Nina threw her hands up defensively. They both smiled suspiciously.
He could tell they knew something. He glared at them and they tried to turn away. "Guyyys come on who does Amb-" He stopped as she walked in, out of breath. She must have slept in since he had kept her up. Guilt with a little pride would around his heart.
"Goodmorning guys!" She smiled, her eyes stopping on Marin. Her heart missed a few beats as he locked eyes with her.
"Goodmorning Amber," butterflies soared in her stomach at the way he said her name. She looked away and took her seat.
Marin elbowed Alan, trying to question him again silently with an impatient expression. Alan shrugged, acting as if he didn't know anything, quickly looking away. He was thankful the teacher walked in. He figured his friend would find out soon enough. No one can be that oblivious for that long. Or at least Alan hoped not.
