The next day
Annabeth is in her office when she receives a call asking her to come to the West Wing.
She hangs up and takes a deep breath.
Debbie: (brings Annabeth into the Oval Office) "Mr. President, Annabeth Schott is here."
Matt: (looks up from his desk) "Thanks, Debbie. Annabeth, please." He indicates the doors leading out to the walkway to the residence.
They walk outside.
Matt: "I have never been so ashamed of myself. We both know that I had been drinking. A lot. But, that is no excuse. I don't really know what to do here other than apologize profusely and beg your forgiveness."
Annabeth: "I don't think either of us have much choice, Mr. President, but to pretend like the entire thing never happened."
Matt: "What?"
Annabeth: "You're the President of the United States, sir, and I work for your wife and this administration. Nothing good comes of our acknowledging last night."
Matt: "That's…that's okay with you?"
Annabeth: "No. But, although I would not believe you if you told me you are not the sort of man who does this, because you did do it, I am choosing to trust my own judgment of you. And I don't think that the way you were last night is normal for you. This will stay between you and me, Mr. President. But know that if I become aware of this happening to anyone else – of you treating any other woman the way you treated me – I will say something."
Matt: (surprised and uncertain) "Yes."
Annabeth: (hears voices inside the Oval and does not want to end the conversation in any way that will attract attention) "Thank you, Mr. President."
Josh is walking in as Annabeth walks out. He looks back at her and then looks questioningly at the President.
Josh: "Was that Annabeth?"
Matt: "Yeah. I had some things I needed to…Anyway. What's up?"
Josh looks a little confused, but moves onto their priorities for the day.
That night
Leo calls Annabeth as he's getting in the car on the way to a fundraising dinner
Leo: "You talked to him?"
Annabeth: "Yeah"
Leo: "Are you ok? How did it go?"
Annabeth: "As well as it could. I don't need an enemy in the President of the United States."
Leo: "He is the one who did something wrong. He should be worried about you, Annabeth."
Annabeth: "I don't want him worried. Scared people are more dangerous than confident ones."
Leo: "Yeah, but..."
Annabeth: "And scared Presidents are especially dangerous. He's not in a good place, Leo. I guess that's obvious."
Leo: "Yeah. Josh, too."
Annabeth: "Josh?"
Leo: "Josh doesn't like not knowing things and he's too close to a lot of things he doesn't know not to be unsettled."
Annabeth: "Yeah."
Leo: "You're sure you're okay? I can skip this thing."
Annabeth: "I'm fine. I promise."
Leo: "Okay. I'll talk to you later."
Leo hangs up and makes another call
Matt: "Leo, I wasn't sure how to…how to reach out to you."
Leo: "Yeah."
Matt: "I'd like to apologize, obviously. But, having you at the White House or…it's not like I can go anywhere without attracting…"
Leo: "You made it to my house just fine last night."
Matt: "Leo. Truly. I am so sorry."
Leo: "When are you next in Texas?"
Matt: "Just after the 4th of July."
Leo: "I'll come to you."
Matt: "To Houston?"
Leo: "Yeah. We need to talk and it's easier there."
Matt: "Yeah. Sure."
Leo hangs up.
