Chapter 26- "Pacing."
(Hiccup's perspective)
The end of the week came.
And we had no witness.
I was stressed.
I was once again pacing my room with Cami sitting on the side of my bed
I probably paced my room upwards of 100 times.
After a while Cami stood up and wrapped her arms around me in a hug, preventing me from pacing.
"Cami, I cant right now." I sighed
"You say you can't but you still are." she retorted cheekily
I gently pushed her away so she wasn't hugging me but she still gripped my shoulders.
"Cami please i'm stressed… let me rephrase that, i'm overly stressed… I'm beyond stressed… beyond stressed doesn't even explain how stressed I am… There isn't a word in Norse that explains the amount of stress I feel." I ranted
"You need to take your mind off this." she said comfortingly
I'm sad to say that I snapped
"I can't! I need to figure out a way around this, if I don't I'll be held a prisoner on Berk knowing that I couldn't save you!" I shouted.
There was a moment of silence in which my eyes widened at the realization that I had just shouted at Cami.
I opened my mouth to apologize but Cami put a finger to my lips
"I know you didn't mean to yell. So you don't need to apologize. But you do need to take a break, the next lightning storm isnt due for another couple of days." she said
"I can't take a break knowing your life's on the line, not to mention your mothers and Thuggory's." I said sadly
"You should go flying on Toothless, It'll help you calm down." she said
"It won't help." I sighed dejectedly
"You always say all your worries float away when you're up there." She said
"I won't ever stop worrying about you." I said gently grabbing her chin
"You don't need to worry about me." she purred
"I know… I just can't help myself." I said as I placed my lips over hers
(Bertha's perspective)
I was in the middle of a meeting trying to figure out a way to get around Stoick's demands. We had all the village elders and everyone versed in the law scouring the ancient laws written by any tribe. We had no luck. The only thing we found that gave us even a bit of joy was that Stoick is not allowed to demand to take over the entire tribe, as stated in an old law. However as Stoick isn't asking for that it isn't very good. I had been working tirelessly to protect my family, if I could find a way to atleast spare Cami, Hiccup and Thuggory I would take it. Sadly this was not the case as if there was, Hiccup would have sacrificed himself for the rest of us.
He's a good kid, kind and caring, and will do anything to help people, even if they don't deserve it.
Going back to Berk would break him. He wouldn't be himself, he would be sad and easily angered, he would have bags under his eyes, his hair would be unkempt and he wouldn't bother eating. I doubt he would survive.
I was broken from my thoughts by Tindra
"Hey, you find anything?" she asked comfortingly
I glanced down at the table in front of me; it was covered in ancient papers with equally as ancient laws on them
"Sorry I zoned out there…" I mumbled
"It's ok, you're stressed." Tindra said reassuringly
"Not as stressed as Hiccup." Rasmos remarked(1)
"True, the young lad hasn't slept at all." Tindra said
"He hasn't eaten either." I mumbled
"The boy acts like a father of a family." Rasmos mused
The implication was clear; if there was a way for us to be saved even at the expense of himself, Hiccup would take it.
(Gobber's perspective)
I banged my hammer on the metal axe before me.
I wasn't very focused however.
My mind was still reeling from the conversation with Stoick 4 days ago.
"Stoick the teens keep telling me I should talk to you." I said
"Aye." he said
I waited for an explanation but none came.
"Are you going to tell me what happened? Or do I need to refuse to repair your axe?" I asked in a light threatening manner
"Snotlout figured out my son is alive." he said
"Hiccup?" I asked bewildered
"Hiccup." he confirmed
"But how? Where? And Why?" I asked stuttering
"He has lived as a Bog Burglar, under a spell or a curse of somesort." he said
"A curse?" I asked
"Yes. The daughter of Bertha is the enchantress. Hiccup has fallen for her."
"It will all be over soon however. The girl, her bodyguard and her mother will be executed and Hiccup will be returned to us." Stoick said firmly
"How?"
"Their claim is that Hiccup asked the Bog Burglar heir to kidnap him from here to the Bog islands at the last Thing, I have made a demand that they must produce a third witness to prove that he asked this, if they dont it is up to Thor to determine their fate, I am sure that Thor will agree with us."
*Clink*
I abruptly came out of my memory as I hit the edge of my anvil and chipped my hammer.
"but uncle Stoick she was going to be my bride, we can't have her executed." I heard Snotlout complaining
I sighed and stepped out of my shop to see Stoick and Snotlout at the docks preparing to go to the 'Thor decides' thing.
They were going to an island that was halfway between the Bog isles and Berk so they should arrive there in 3 or 4 days.
I simply prayed to Odin that Stoick wasn't making a big mistake.
(Thuggory's perspective)
The three of us sat in the cove, along with our dragons.
The sharkworm which I named Shipwreck was floating upside down on the top of the water with his arms and legs stretched out.
Cami was wearing a swimsuit and tanning on Shipwreck's belly.
I was sitting on a rock eating a few peanuts out of my hand that I picked from a nearby peanut tree.
Toothless was sleeping on his rock
And Hiccup… was pacing.
Cami must have heard because without moving she shouted
"Hiccup! SIT DOWN." she demanded
He stopped pacing, sighed and then walked over to the rock I'm sitting on and sits on the ground leaning back against it.
All was silent for a couple minutes till Hiccup changed positions from his legs stretched out in front of him to cross legged.
After a couple more minutes Hiccup stood up and walked to a nearby rock and sat on top of it
Cami flipped over so she was on her stomach and she was tanning her back.
After a few minutes Hiccup stood back up and walked over to Toothless and sat down against his friends flank.
Toothless crooned in comfort but didn't open his eyes
I had finished my peanuts so I quietly dusted off my hands and layed down on the rock and closed my eyes.
After several minutes of silence I heard shuffling.
I opened my eyes to look at Hiccup who couldn't find a comfortable position to sit in.
I looked at Toothless and he had his eyes open with an annoyed expression on his face
Hiccup moved again, and Toothless seemed to have had enough.
He grunted and stood up, pushing Hiccup over none too gently.
Toothless walked over to a tree and climbed into and was cradled in multiple large branches
"Uuufff." Hiccup grunted as he fell over
"Yeah you tell him Toothless." Cami said then Shipwreck flipped over tossing her into the water
"Yeah Hiccup I think your stress is affecting Toothless."
Hiccup sat up and looked at where Toothless was now.
Toothless had a sad expression on his face, it almost looked like he was anxious or stressed
"What am I gonna do?" Hiccup asked
"You mean 'what are we going to do?'" Cami said wading towards the shore
"No. I mean me; I'm the one who asked you to kidnap me, I'm the one that convinced Bertha to hide me, I'm the reason Thuggory got involved, I aggravated my father, I'm the reason Stoick is angry with you guys." Hiccup said
"Hiccup you're not alone. I'm the one that let it slip that you're Hiccup, I'm the one who accidentally sent Thuggory to you, I'm the one who pressured my mom into accepting you, I'm the one that goaded Stoick. But I'm also the girl that loves you and I will help you." Cami said as she walked up to Hiccup
"I know that but I still feel that I need to come up with a solution." he said glumly
"We could leave." I said quietly
We all looked at Toothless and Shipwreck who were now playing with each other
"What about Bertha?" Hiccup asked
"We could tell her about the dragons, if Toothless can carry two people I'm sure Shipwreck can too." I said
"Even if she did accept that dragons aren't evil, where would we go?" Cami asked
"Follow the hysterics to America?" Hiccup asked sarcastically
Then we all seemed to have the same idea; maybe we didn't need to come up with a workaround, we should just ask the other tribes for help. We had dragons; it wouldn't be a long trip.
So I Tentatively approached Shipwreck and showed him the saddle Hiccup had made, he seemed to understand and crouched down so I could strap it on.
The saddle was designed with a slit for his serrated Dorsal fin to fit in, part of the saddle extended past his fin and had handles that were attached to small chains that attach to a leather wrapping that goes on his head in between his eyes and his mouth most of the saddle extended behind the fin for me to lay on top of if we went under water or to sit on top of it if we were flying.
I mounted on top of Shipwreck and Hiccup and Cami mounted Toothless.
"Ready?" I asked
"Were we going?" Cami asked
"Hysterics is the first tribe that comes to mind." Hiccup said
"They should be passing by now on their way to 'America'" Hiccup continued
"Lets go." I said and we took off.
(1) remember Rasmos isn't speechless he just doesn't talk much.
