Chapter 37.

=Hiccup's POV=
[December 18; Morning]
[Hunter Isle; Grimborn House]

I was overjoyed when Gobber said he would stay through to Neerday, which is the day after Hogmanay, our celebration for the last day of the year. Gobber said he couldn't be away from Berk too long, as they would need their blacksmith to deal with the new enemies and Johann. I understood, of course. I was glad that Gobber staying as long as he was; he's been here a week so far and would stay one more. Gobber typically always spent the Snoggletog holiday with my dad and me anyway, and since he was mad at my dad; Gobber said he was happy to stick to the tradition of spending the holidays with me. We've spent the last week just talking and helping the dragon hunter tribe set up for the holiday celebrations. I had to say, it was a lot of fun and I was happy. I knew it would fade some when Gobber left; I wish he could stay with me, but I understood he wouldn't leave the Hooligans to suffer.

I didn't want them to get hurt or suffer, despite what they did to me, but I wouldn't go back to Berk and live among them again. Maybe one day, I'd forgive them, but I don't think I could ever live there again knowing that every time something different about me comes to light; they all walk away. It's happened twice now, granted the first time that Astrid came to talk to me and rallied the other riders to go to the nest five years ago and I saved the tribe. This time: they all rejected, abandoned, and betrayed me. I couldn't just let it go, and I can't live there again. An heir or not, I couldn't let myself be among them again; the tribe made it clear they didn't want me there, or as their next leader, so I wouldn't go back at all.

I was okay where I was on Hunter Isle; I liked it here and I was seriously debating on staying for good. Although, I might invest time and materials into building my own place. I liked my space in the Grimborn home, but if I were going to be here from now on, possibly living with the dragon hunters; I'd need a little house for myself. It wouldn't seem right to be living in the Grimborn house if I weren't a member of the Grimborn family. I was just a guest, so I actually should be staying in the Guest House. I'd think of something, maybe I could stay on the island when the hunters went out for the next hunting season. Or maybe if I'm lucky, I can get the raids to stop and figure out a way to keep their strong business without capturing and killing dragons.

I know it took care of their tribe, but I did trades and business with dragons that didn't involve hurting and killing. We'll see, the first thing on my list is to find out how to stop these raids for their people. No one was open to having peace with dragons until the attacks stopped; it was like that for many tribes, so I got the dragon hunters' hesitation. However, the best part about the hunters is that many already believed peace was possible and they just didn't know how to get close and obtain it. Thankfully, that's where I come in because I know how to earn trust, train, and ride. Stopping the raids would open that door, and I knew once people started bonding; change happened. Ryker and Viggo both believed I could change their minds, and their very way of life; I just needed to right things to fall into place.

Last night was fun; I enjoyed my time with Gobber and the first feast in the Great Hall with the dragon hunters, a pre-Snoggletog party. There would be another celebration tonight after the family holiday things took place. Gobber and I were already invited to join the Grimborn's; we accepted before heading to bed. I ended up staying at the guest house with Gobber; I fell asleep there while talking to my father-figure and all he did was cover me up and let me sleep in the chair. Despite my age, I was still small enough to curl comfortably and sleep just about anywhere. I had pleasant dreams, which were unfortunately interrupted by waking up to a raid an hour ago.

"This is madness!" Gobber remarked, shooing another dragon off. Deciding it was his best spot when the raid started, Gobber was helping out Ulrik in the forge. I was with Viggo, Ryker, and the Grimborn family member.

"I told you!" I shouted back at him.

"Berk never got it this bad!" Gobber scoffed.

"You think I haven't noticed that, Gobber!?" I glared, unamused by him pointing out the obvious. "But there are no dragon nests with giant lava-bathing, mountain-sized dragons present so that axes my theory about it being another Red Death. And we can't find anything else that would make them be this aggressive. Believe me, I've been working at trying to stop this for a month!," I informed.

"Are there other dragons that can take control?" Ryker wondered.

"None I've come across," I shook my head to him. "So it's possible there could be, but even so…Toothless isn't picking up any scents or energy that could point to it being a dragon causing this. And when we got near Red Death, Toothless knew it was dangerous," I mentioned.

There was suddenly a scream. "RUNA!" I heard Vera yell in fear. All of our attention moved to Vera, who was trying to chase a Deadly Nadder who had grabbed Runa and was flying off.

"My baby!" Truda cried. The Nadder was taking Runa off the island, and I had to act quickly.

"Toothless!" I called as my Night Fury came out and instantly moved to my side. As I prepared for Toothless to take off, Runa curled herself up and kicked free from the Nadder's hold; she instantly began to fall and it would mean her death if I didn't do something. Runa fell past one of the cliffs and grabbed hold of something, dangling there, screaming and scared.

"We need to get Runa, and stop the raid…" Viggo panted.

"Toothless, deal with the raid. Alpha mode!" I told him. Toothless took on the blue glow and shot a blast into the sky; it burst out in waves, then he roared loudly as the dragons stopped. Toothless motioned his head with a glare in his eyes for the dragons to leave, now. Sure enough, they obeyed and the raid was over.

"That was brilliant, lad," Gobber said.

"HELP ME!" Runa yelled out, terrified as she tried to hold tightly.

The tribe wasted no time in rushing over to figure out a way to get her down safely and quickly. As I listened to them debate things, I realized we were running short on time. Runa wasn't going to be able to just hang there for much longer. "Well, what about climbing up the cliff from this side?" Ryker offered.

"It's too steep to go up and get her, and it would take a long time. Same with going around through the forest. And I can't even get the dragons up there; they can't get close with their sizes or wingspans," I informed. Runa screamed again as one of her hands slipped. Yeah, there was no more time. I closed my eyes taking a deep breath, then letting it out. I needed an idea.

"Hiccup," Viggo looked at me, I could see the concern in his eyes. "What about your…You know?" He asked.

"I-I don't know what I can do with them in this situation…" I replied softly.

"Just…Try? Anything, please? She's my daughter…You…Understand a close bond with someone you love, your love for Toothless, and how you'd do anything to keep him safe…Please, she's my only daughter…" Viggo said firmly, but with worry too. I looked in his eyes, then at my hands. Could I do something here?

"Viggo, I've never done anything with other humans before regarding my powers…I've only put up a barrier in fear, and made weapons float…" I admitted, scared, and nervous.

"Can you focus your powers on her, make her float down safely?" Ryker wondered.

"I-I don't know," I stared at him.

"Can you try? Please? I believe in you, Hiccup…" Viggo pleaded.

"I believe in you too," Ryker added.

"Not sure what we're talking about, but I believe in you always, laddie," Gobber strolled up beside me, a hand on my shoulder and an affirmative nod.

I sighed some. "I can try…But that's all I can do…" I responded.

"Thank you," Viggo said softly, moving to give me some space. Ryker did the same, and then the two of them had others disperse slightly too.

Gods, I really hoped I could do this, and that I wouldn't regret it. I wasn't ready to reveal my powers yet, but this situation was like back on Berk; scary and I just wanted to do something to stop a bad outcome. If Runa fell, she was as good as dead. I'd never forgive myself if I refused to help when I couldn't have changed things. No, I couldn't think about what happened with Berk would happen again. I had to trust my friends, the people who saved me. I had to trust Gobber too. I could do this; I know I could. I was able to do those other things with my powers against the dragon riders' attack a month ago. I didn't practice any of that weapon stopping stuff, but I did it because I was determined to prove them wrong, determined to win. I had said it to Gobber, I did incredible things because I was determined to and all I'd done is focus on what I wanted to do.

I closed my eyes again, picturing what I wanted to do. I wanted to bring Runa down, carefully, with my powers. Just like when I did it with Viggo's sword, and then the weapons and attacks from the dragon riders. I wanted to wrap my energy around Runa and control it to my will. I took a deep breath and let it out while looking ahead at Runa. I brought both hands up, in Runa's direction before relaxing myself, but holding complete focus on my task. I saw a white aura encase my hands, then it faded. I looked at Runa now and the branch she was holding. I let my powers flash again, and the branch did too; I shifted it just a little, and Runa screamed. That was all I needed to see; I could move other objects if I stayed focused, but I still never tried it on a person. I took another deep breath and let it out while focusing on Runa entirely. The area was quiet, but I didn't care who was seeing what; I had a task to complete.

I moved closer to Runa and got under her slightly, turning so my back was to the cliffside she was hanging from. My powers flared again as I saw the glow encase Runa, I stayed relaxed and tried to push off my fears. "Runa?" I called up to her.

"Who is talking to me? I can't look, I'm scared!" Runa stated.

"It's Hiccup," I replied. "Listen to me very carefully, alright? I'm going to help you down, but I need you to trust me fully with your life. Can you do that?" I asked.

"Hiccup, if you can get me down safely; I'll freaking kiss you…I trust you. I do trust you, but for the love of Odin, get me down, now!" Runa screeched.

"No need for all that, your trust is enough," I told her softly. "I'm right under you, okay?" I stated calmly.

"Okay!" Runa replied.

"Now…I'm gonna ask you to do something you will think is crazy, and you will probably freak out and question it…But remember that you gave me your trust, and I'll explain everything later. But when I tell you to do this; I need you to just do it," I informed.

"Al-Alright…" Runa replied nervously.

"Good…" I paused to compose myself. "Runa, I need you to let go of the branch you're holding," I ordered gently. "I know how that sounds, and you're scared…But I swear on my life to you that it will be okay, and you're not going to fall anywhere but right in my arms. I'm right below you…So let go," I watched Runa's hand start to shake, but let go and she instantly fell. With her eyes closed and screaming; I faced my closed fists at her, then let my hands open, palms at her and the white aura encased my hands, and her body, instantly suspending her in the air.

Panting, and scared, but confused, Runa looked around to see she was floating in the air. "What the-?..." Runa asked slowly.

"Don't move…" I instructed. Gently, and slowly, I brought my hands down and closer to me. After a few moments, I walked right under her and she dropped into my arms lightly. My powers instantly deactivated, allowing me to hold her full weight with ease. Runa's arms had shifted around my neck when she saw me in her sights and that I'd catch her as promised. "See? Right in my arms safely, as promised." I told her with a light smile. Runa still looked at me with confusion, but also another emotion in her eye that I couldn't make out. Perhaps gratefulness? Admiration? I didn't know. Regardless, Runa ended up kissing my cheek and hugging me tightly.

"Thank you…" Runa said, it sounded like she was about to cry, but in gratitude that she was down from there and safe. I gave her a light hug back.

"You're welcome," I replied before carefully setting her down on her feet and walking her the few steps towards her parents, and the rest of her family members.

I stepped back to let Truda instantly embrace her daughter, then Viggo followed suit. As they were all checking up on her, I saw the rest of the tribe looking at me with surprise. I had heard gasps before too, but I had my focus on keeping my powers steady to hold Runa. That was something I recalled from that awful day on Berk, however, no one looked scared. I was still nervous of a repeat, and just slowly moved to be against Toothless for the sake of a fast getaway if everyone suddenly protested my presence on the island.

"Lad, that was incredible…" Gobber complimented.

"I just had to help when there was no other way…I didn't even know I could do it," I admitted softly.

"But the fact is that you did do it, Hiccup," Ryker pointed out. "And you saved Runa's life,"

"I'm indebted to you," Truda stated gently, stroking my cheek with a smile.

"As am I…Thank you, Hiccup," Viggo said, offering his hand to shake mine; I returned the gesture, not wanting to be rude.

"I-It was nothing…I only acted on your request, Viggo." I replied.

"You acted on trying, Hiccup. You didn't know if you could do it, but you did and I'm eternally grateful to you for saving my daughter," Viggo responded with a smile.

"How did you do it?" Vera inquired.

How did I know that question would come up? "I just…Wanted to save her, and…I guess that's what my abilities made happen," I informed.

"So you envisioned saving her, like a good image in your head of using your powers to hold her and then guide her into your arms. Like you did with the sword," Ryker mentioned.

I shrugged. "I guess so. I told you that I have no idea how it works. But this time was just me wanting to help and I guess that's what happened,"

"That's the point, Hiccup. Your powers respond to your desires, and having a good image of what you want to accomplish is the key to training them to have full control. Now that we know this, we can help you work with them, master your abilities, and whatever other ones you could possess," Viggo offered.

"I told you I accepted your help before, and that hasn't changed. But let's hold off until tomorrow…Holding a human is a bit harder than a sword. I guess I'll have to work at certain levels of weight to master that skill," I chuckled a little. How could I not be happy right now? The dragon hunters weren't upset, mad, or scared about my reveal of having powers. Sure, they were confused, but no fear. Viggo and Ryker promised that no one would mind and I'd still be accepted; this proved it for me.

"Of course, of course, my boy," Viggo patted my shoulder with a smile.

"It's a holiday after all, so I say we all get back to enjoying the day and will reconvene for the feast at the hall for 6:00 this evening," Ryker added.

"Yes, absolutely!" Hertha joined in. "Now, let's get on to breakfast at the house!" She added, as everyone smiled, laughed, and dispersed. I heard everyone talking about what I did, but it wasn't anything bad and believed they were blessed to have such a talented young man staying with them. The best part was me hearing that they wanted me to stay forever. That is what felt good, being wanted. And now my idea of staying permanently was absolutely being considered. I could…Have a home again. Still, there was much to think about and all I wanted to do today was enjoy Snoggletog with my essential father, Gobber, and the Dragon Hunter Tribe of Hunter Isle.
