AUTHOR'S NOTES: This one shot was requested by StriderPhantom. This one is another tribute to 9/11 and it's about Andrew's father.
19 years ago in New York, a truly horrific event took place. An American Airlines plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre at 8:46 AM. A few minutes later, a second plane hit the South Tower of the World Trade Centre and about 30 minutes later, another plane crashed into the Pentagon and thirty minutes after, another plane crashed at an airfield in Pennsylvania.
My little brother was born
May those who died during that day rest in peace and thank you, to all the police, firefighter, port authority officers and medical officers that were on duty that day.
SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2001
7:00 AM
It was Tuesday morning at a house in Midwood, Brooklyn. In the house, there was a picture of Kimberly Knight sitting up in a hospital bed, holding an infant Andrew in her arms. Standing beside her in the photo was her husband Arthur Knight. Arthur had light brown hair and golden eyes.
The two parents were sleeping, a crib was in the corner of the large bedroom. All seemed quiet, until it was broken by the sound of little baby Andrew now crying. Both Arthur and Kimberly woke up and looked at the crib.
Arthur looked at the alarm clock and said with a slight smile, "Dead on, seven hundred hours."
"I guess who needs an alarm clock, when you got a baby." Kimberly joked as she got up, put on her dressing gown and walked over to the crib.
"Oh darling, it's alright." Kimberly said gently, picking up her son and holding him close as she began to nurse him.
He immediately stopped crying and she smiled at him. Arthur climbed out of bed and placed on his dressing gown, walking over and wrapping his arms around his wife, while caressing his infant son's head.
"I'll go and make breakfast sweetie." Arthur said, kissing his wife's cheek.
She nodded and kissed him back as she said, "Okay, I'll feed Andrew and we'll be right down."
He smiled and headed downstairs, while Kimberly sat back down on the bed and prepared to give Andrew his breakfast.
8:43 AM
Kimberly continued to hold Andrew in her arms as Arthur finished cleaning the dishes from breakfast. Both of them now dressed and soon, Arthur's sister Josephine was arriving with her baby daughter Tabitha for her and Kimberly were going to take their children out for a walk.
Normally Arthur would be dressed in his uniform as part of his job being in the US Navy, but for the next week he and his crew was on shore leave and he was enjoying spending every moment of it with his wife and son.
The CNN News was playing on the television in the kitchen, reporting news from the New York Stock Exchange. The door knocked and Arthur walked over and opened the door, revealing the smiling face of his sister Josephine and in a pram was her daughter Tabitha.
"Hey sis." Arthur said giving Josephine a hug.
"Hi bro." Josephine replied, returning the hug and then coming inside the house.
She placed the pram in the living room and then unbuckled Tabitha, picking her up and holding her in her arms. She then walked over to Kimberly and gave her a hug as she asked, "How's Andrew this morning?"
"Really good. He only woke up once during the night." Kimberly answered as she returned the one armed hug. "As I said to Arthur this morning, who needs an alarm clock when you got a baby."
Josephine laughed as she sat down on one of the chairs, "I know what you mean. Tabitha here woke up two times during the night."
"Would you like a cup of coffee sis before you and Kimberly head out for your walk?" Arthur offered.
Josephine nodded and then asked Arthur, "So, what are you planning to do today?"
"I believe I'm going to give the garage a clean-up. There's a fair bit of stuff I want to go through and probably throw out." Arthur answered, pouring the coffee into a mug and then bringing it over to his sister.
"How's Hector?" Kimberly asked.
"He's fine. Just working an extra shift this week down at the factory." Josephine answered, before taking a sip of her coffee.
Suddenly the news changed its story to the World Trade Centre in New York City and the reporter spoke, "Breaking news! We have unconfirmed reports that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Centre."
Their eyes widened as they heard that and immediately looked at the screen to see the horrifying image of smoke coming from the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. Arthur immediately turned up the television and they all sat there and watched and smoke continued to rise from the tower.
"What is going on?" Kimberly asked in complete shock, hey eyes couldn't leave the screen.
They continued to listen on the news as the camera continued to film the disaster live. The news reporters were speaking to witnesses everywhere outside the tower, trying to figure out what happened.
Arthur's phone rang and he answered it, "Hello?"
"Arthur, are you watching the news right now?" His boss, Captain Terri Miller asked on the phone.
"Yes. We're looking at it right now. How could this have happened? Have you heard anything?" Arthur answered and then asked.
"I don't know. The only information I'm getting right now is on the news." Terri answered. "I'm waiting to hear from someone at the Pentagon and from the South Tower, as soon as I hear anything I'll let you know."
"I understand." Arthur said and with that, he hung up the phone and continued to watch the news.
"What did Terri say?" Kimberly asked.
"She's waiting for more news and she'll let me know." Arthur answered. "I think it's best if you two wait here."
"I'll call Hector and let him know I'll be staying over here." Josephine said, immediately pulling out her phone and calling Hector.
"Who would fly a plane into the World Trade Centre?" Kimberly said.
"I don't know. I do know one thing, that's no small plane." Arthur said.
After putting Andrew and Tabitha in a crib in the living room, they continued to watch the news for twenty minutes, listening to witnesses who had seen what had happened. But then they suddenly see another plan fly on the camera and before they knew it, an explosion could be seen at the South Tower of the World Trade Centre.
"Oh my god!" Josephine screamed, covering her mouth in shock.
Arthur held his wife close in his arms as the news then reported, "A second plane has crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Centre!"
As though they could sense something wrong, Andrew and Tabitha both began to cry. Kimberly and Josephine immediately picked up their children and held them close, hopefully to calm their children down.
"Arthur? What is going on?" Kimberly asked, tears falling from her eyes.
"I have a hunch, I just I hope I'm wrong." Arthur said as he picked up his phone and began to call Terri.
Terri answered and he asked, "Terri, did you just see what I saw?"
"Yes….it's…..it's horrible! Do you get the feeling that it was deliberate?" Terri asked, fear could be heard in her voice.
"Yes. I do. Have you heard anything?" Arthur asked.
"I'm still waiting for a return call from the Pentagon. The instant I hear anything, I'll give you a call." Terri answered.
With that, the call ended.
9:38 AM
The news continued. The three adults could only watch in horror as they towers were burning. Tears could be seen falling from their eyes, not believing that what started as a normal Tuesday morning, had become something…..truly horrifying.
Arthur's phone rang. He picked it up and answered, "Hello?"
"Arthur, I got confirmed reports from our superiors at the Pentagon. The planes hitting the towers were deliberate. Four planes were hijacked this morning and they're trying to locate the third and fourth one." Terri confirmed.
Arthur was about to say something when suddenly Terri screamed in the phone, "OH MY GOD!"
"What is it?!" Arthur asked, his fear rising.
She didn't need to answer as he looked at the television and saw on the news and saw now on fire, was the Pentagon.
9:58 AM
They all continued to watch the news. Reports were coming in from almost every single news channel in America. Something crashed into the fifth corridor of the Pentagon and the White House had been evacuated as a pre-caution.
Suddenly on the news, a huge explosion was heard and CNN immediately went back to the World Trade Centre and everyone in the house pretty much screamed as they saw the South Tower collapse and smoked filled the air of New York City.
There was nothing but silence now. No-one could speak. No-one moved from their spots, after what they just saw. About thirty minutes later, the North Tower of what was once the World Trade Centre, collapsed right before their eyes.
The world truly stopped turning that day.
ONE YEAR LATER
September 11th, 2002
Thousands of people have gathered where the World Trade Centre once stood. Arthur, Kimberly, Hector and Josephine all stood with them. In the prams were now 1 year old Tabitha and Andrew, too young to know what was going on but could see that their parents were sad about something.
Everyone placed flowers and small American flags were the towers once stood, giving their respects and remembering those innocent people who tragically lost their lives during the 9/11 attack. Tears were shed, prayers were said, speeches and memories were shared by the survivors, the family members of those who lost their loved ones and the heroes who were on duty that day.
No-one will ever forget what happened on that September day.
