Chapter 24
Dandelionstream trudged on, ignoring how hard it was to walk. The others were already slowing down for her. It had been three days since they left, and Dandelionstream missed her daughter deeply. The care-free but fierce young she-cat had always been a light in this dark world. They kept walking straight, ignoring the late leaf-fall chill. Finally, they stopped for the night under a thick bush.
Raincloud's POV
Raincloud swished her tail to try in vain to control the kits. It was the gathering in the real clans, and Raincloud promised them they could go.
"In a line!" She called. "Or we will be late!" The kits instantly fell in line.
Rushkit, Palekit, Flowerkit, Flickerkit, Leafkit, Starlingkit, Blackkit, Birdkit, Snowkit, Mudkit, Swankit, Firekit, and Bluekit gave her eager smiles, waiting for her to lead them down to the clans. Raincloud began walking down, down, down, until they were in a deserted clearing. "We will wait for them to get hear." She said to the now-nervous kits. Mudkit stepped forward. "Will father be here?" he asked. Raincloud glanced at the sky. Mudkit's father, Stonetail, went murderous after his son died. He thought it was Ratear that killed him, even though it was sickness. As Stonetail died and went to the Place of No Stars, Raincloud had made sure Mudkit was safely asleep. Now, every day, Mudkit looked for his father. Raincloud's heart ached. She used to love Stonetail, even after he had kits with Steamheart. But when Mudkit died, that changed him to a horrible cat. Raincloud shook the thought away. "Maybe." She said gently. "Riverclan!" Palekit called. They waited patiently for the rest of the clans. And then, the gathering began. Troutstar went first. "Our cats have been gone for 2 moons and a half. Graytail remains deputy. We have three cats who are becoming apprentices. Lionpaw, Rosepaw, and Bravepaw. Their mentors are Lizardleap, Thundershine, and Splashnose. Snakepaw and Hopepaw became Snakestrike and Hopelight." Raincloud flicked her ears. Hopelight was an unusual name. Lizardleap had fully recovered from her madness and was sitting with her tail curled neatly across her paws. "And fishing is good." Troutstar finished and let Foxstar go. "Oatclaw is gone, and Snowtail remains deputy. She will be attending the gathering in my place, for I will be in the nursery with kits." The other cats yowled congratulations, and the other leaders had no news.
"Are you watching Hopelight too?" A gruff voice asked. Raincloud turned to see Yellowpelt, the most respected cat in Starclan. "Yes." Raincloud lied. "Hopelight will save the clans," Yellowpelt said.
