Road Weary

There was a small "pop" in the distance, something one would barely take note. It's the nature of the world we live in, go go go. So it goes unnoticed by most. Two men in a dark car are listening, though, and they will engage with whatever made that subtle sound on a field of battle that is unseen throughout most of the Earth. It's a delicate balance, protecting those innocent men and women, boys and girls while cleaning up after the monsters. Some are good at hiding, they wear a human mask and can even live in the typically framed house behind a white picket fence. And, with nothing to test that façade they go on living and killing, with no trace, no links to their dark existence.

"So, Sammy, what do we have this time," Dean tried for a bright and bubbly demeanor as they pulled up to the store. Long gone were the days of practical jokes and daily capers. His hand subconsciously scrubbed his serious expression, as if to wipe it away and bring back the days of old.

"From the evidence left behind inside the victim it appears to be some type of insect creature," Sam intoned, pouring over his laptop and adding more notes. His appearance was kind, but road weary and resigned to his fate.

Dean heaved a sigh and opened his door, still agile enough to easily roll out of the Impala. He wasn't sure if this was some strange stunt on them from God or demons or angels or if it actually was some freaking bug monster they just hadn't ever encountered in their long days of hunting. Hell, he wasn't sure which would be preferred at this point. They hadn't heard so much as a peep from the normal rank and file so this strange curve into the "normal" unnatural was odd.

Sam also exited the Impala and ducked down for a moment do perform a mundane task – tie his shoe. Then they were on the move, unglamorous in their search for food and a place to stay for the night while they tracked down whatever had planted itself in the current town they were visiting.

After Dean's normal meal of a bacon-burger heart-attack on a bun and Sam's "rabbit food" they headed back to their bottom of the barrel motel.

The life of a hunter was never easy, but, for this pair, the road had been long. But they carried on.
