Chapter 25 – A New Life
***Warning this story is M for a reason, this chapter goes into dark areas of abuse. ***
Freedom is never free.
I know that- More than most realize.
Freedom cost us more- Than we should have to give. ~James Grengs~
Dawn couldn't sleep, it had become a common occurrence; ever since Star's soul had returned to merge again with her soul back on Earth. A good night's sleep consisted of 3 to 4 hours, if she were lucky. Anything longer and Dawn was forced to deal with some of the most horrific dreams she had ever experienced, her last several hundred years were on a constant loop when she allowed herself to let sleep pull her under into the deepest parts of slumber.
Then for an extra added twist, her magical abilities had evolved. She didn't know how, but since her soul reunited, she could now astral project back to Earthland. What had her concerned was she being pull back with no control to Earthland, as well as walking into the unconsciousness of Natsu and Lucy while they slept.
The first time it happened she had only been home a couple of days. She was in the middle of a meeting with other rebirths when she was brought to her knees. Her soul ripped away, a forced astral projection, when she was thrown through the door, before her eyes she found Natsu crying he looked the same as the last time she saw him. Still covered in dirt and her blood, clothes shredded from Acnologia's attack.
All her memories and emotions of that day rolled with sickness beneath her skin. She hoped against hope as she reached out to him, praying he would see her projection. She was brought again to her knees as she was overwhelmed with emotions, she could feel his confusion, fear, as he realized there was no Igneel there to guide him. Natsu was frightened and alone.
Dawn tried to get her bearings; this could not be the great city of Crocus. She was sure that is where Zeref told Layla the gate was currently housed. Dawn surveyed the area there were no other slayers, only Natsu, he was truly alone in some unknown forest. Before she could even grasp what was happening, her soul was thrust to another part of Fiore.
This time she knew were she was, home, the smell of the air told her she was on Igneels lands, the current home of the Heartfilia estate. This experience was different from Natsu. There she only had enough time to share his feelings before she was ripped away, but here she could smell, feel, and see her…. Lucy was before her eyes.
Her cousin's tiny form was shaking, as tears flowed freely down her round cheeks. The maids were trying to hold the little girl back from entering a room, but having been trained by Draco and Star, she squirmed out of their hold with ease. Once in the room Lucy launched herself onto a bed, crawling up next to a body, while wrapping her tiny hands into the sheets, holding on for dear life.
Dawn followed slowly behind, as she entered the room, she could hear slow haggard breathing, she realized too late it was the 7th, that could only mean… 'No, I don't want to see this…' screamed in her head.
Hesitantly Dawn cast her eyes toward the head of the bed; it felt as if her heart was beating out of her chest, and her blood pulsed in her ears. She didn't want to see her not like this; however, she owed it to her to be a witness for all she had done. The last three years she had been her pseudo-mother, she loved and protected her, while giving Star the opportunity to have something of a normal life. Even if it could only be temporary, during that time Star had a rare moment of peace, in her otherwise chaotic existence.
Her eyes scanned past Lucy's quivering body; her head laid lightly resting on her mother's chest as if she were counting each heartbeat. Dawn's eyes first spotted her long tresses of gold; she had never seen Layla wear her hair down, it was always piled on top of her head in a bun or series of beautifully intricate weaving.
Gathering her courage Dawn looked up to gaze at her face. She was greeted with the softest loving orbs of the deepest chocolate, accompanied by a tired smile as she lovingly patted Lucy's head with the lightest of touches. She could hear Layla whisper, 'please be brave my little one, I will always be with you'.
Dawn gasped as she stared at Layla, she looked like a beautiful pale wraith, shrouded in a halo of gold. Before her laid the withering body of the woman, who just a few days earlier had looked to be normal. Layla's natural glow to her porcelain skin was gone, there was deep dark circles under her eyes, she looked so small and frail in that oversized king bed.
Layla's vessel was severely damaged, Dawn wondered how she was still holding on. She could clearly see her magic was no longer draining a drop here or there, but now it steadily dripped out the many cracks of her failing vessel. Her body was rejecting her magic forcing it out, like poison. Soon those cracks would give way, and like a damn opening its flood gates, releasing all her magic, and taking with it the last of Layla's soul. From the looks of things, it would be happening soon, Dawn could tell Layla was too tired to hold on much longer.
Dawn didn't know how long she had been watching, when suddenly Jude crossed in front of her vision. He grunted at Lucy, telling her to get off her mother and get out so the doctor could come examine Layla.
"Jude do not speak to Lucy in that tone. She is our daughter, she is worried; right now, she needs you. And I need you to be strong for her, you will be all she has left, my love." Even though Layla laid there dying, she refused to be beaten, and she let it be known her expectations of her beloved husband.
Jude was shocked with Layla's chastising words; yet it was part of the very reason he loved her so much. Since the first day he laid eyes on her, she was his ray of sunshine, and his strength, and uncontrollable force of nature. He had always felt so lucky she choice him a poor young man, when she could have had anyone. She desired him, understood his dreams, and chose to support him, every step of the way she had been with him. And now…
"Your right my love, I'm sorry." Jude's voice cracked a bit from the weight of his soon to be reality without his sunshine. With the kindest voice he could muster he turned his attention to his crying daughter.
"Lucy, sweetheart, the doctor needs to talk to mommy and daddy, would you please go with Spetto for a little while."
Dawn watched as Lucy picked up her head nodding to her parents, allowing her mother's most trusted maid to take her away. Jude was watching Lucy as she left the room, Dawn was getting ready to follow her, when she heard Layla's whisper, "please stay".
Dawn whipped her head around to see Layla, looking straight at her, then she heard it again, "please".
So… Layla could see her astral projection. Dawn could not deny her, she simply nodded in understanding, and waited.
After both men left the room, and Dawn could tell there was no one coming toward the door, she moved closer to Layla's bed.
"Ar…are you…" Layla struggled to talk. "Dawn?"
Dawn could no longer hold back the tears, stinging as the drops started to fall, "yes my lady."
"Is… Star ok?"
"Our souls are once again reunited, so yes we are fine." Dawn answered quickly knowing Layla's time was short.
The Celestial mage signed in relief then gave her the biggest smile, which reached her beautiful brown eyes. "I knew… it was you, it's your eyes… Draco's eyes. Your red hair… it's so beautiful… does that come from your father, Igneel?"
Dawn couldn't help but return the smile, she also loved her red hair, even though she didn't let many see it on Earth, as red heads stood out more.
"Yeah it is, I like the red too, but when I'm in my true form, my hair is gold with red tips, people say it makes my hair look like fire."
Layla's smile increased, "may I ask… on Earth how old are you? Star never spoke much about her life there except for her son Aiden."
Dawn cocked her head to the side, and gave a shrug to her shoulder wondering why the odd line of questions, "I don't mind, in my current rebirth life I'm 24, Aiden is..."
"He would be six, right?" Layla cut her off.
"You remembered, yeah little rug rat is six, and what a hand full." Dawn laughed as she placed her hand behind her head rubbing her neck
Layla gave a slight chuckle, "you're beautiful… but you only look like your 16 at the most."
"Oh yeah that, well as you know, on Earth my body is fey, so aging is different for me. Honestly, most underlings age much slower than humans. It would be the same my body here because I'm half dragon, then when you mixed blended soul well…"
"I see… interesting." Layla seemed lost in thought, "I'm glad you came… seeing you… it's given me a glimpse… of what my… L… Lucy will resemble in the future." Tears began to fall from Layla's eyes
Dawn wanted to look away, she hated this, because of Zeref, Layla was dying. Yes, she knew she was sick, but if she had not been forced to open that gate, she may have had many more years. This however was Layla's fate, and she would not pity the situation but allow Layla the dignity she deserved, if small talk is what she wanted she would indulge the Celestial mage.
With a mischievous smirk Dawn replied, "Well… you know us Heartfilia women, bound by our destinies, and doomed to look like freaking doppelgangers. I guess this world can't get enough of a good thing."
Layla laughed deeply, realizing Dawn was the more lighthearted side of Star's soul. "Oh, I needed that. Dawn, I wanted… to… thank you."
"Huh? for what my Lady?" For the life of her, she could not think of anything Layla would need to thank her for.
"You… found a way… To be… be here for Lucy."
A blush came over Dawn, as she shrugged her shoulder, "oh... well… Honestly, I'm not sure how I'm doing it, I've never been able to come to Earthland like this before."
"Doesn't matter how or why… you're here… So, thank you."
"Layla, I…"
The Celestial mage tiredly raised her hand, while slowly shaking her head, "don't… this is MY fate… do not feel guilty. Do you… hear me!" Layla fussed with what little strength she had.
Dawn gasped fighting off the urge to break down into sobs, yet she could not hold back the few tears that freely rolled down her face,
"Yes ma'am…" she sniffled.
Without warning Dawn could hear people running toward the door, when it flew open a woman around Layla's age, with beautiful green hair was throwing herself to Layla's bedside. Dawn moved toward the door; there she could see Lucy sitting on a chair out in the hall as if waiting for permission to re-enter. She looked back to Layla, motioning she would be in the hall, the Celestial mage gave her consent with a simple blink of her eyes.
Dawn went to stand near Lucy, part of her was hoping she would see her acknowledging her presence. Realistically it wouldn't be safe for the child, if her father thought she was talking to imaginary friends who knows how he would react. For now, Dawn settled for watching over Lucy; whether she liked it or not, Legba's spell would not allow her to be seen until Fate deemed it time.
It wasn't long before the woman with the green hair left the room, Lucy got up from her spot not waiting for permission, as she ran back inside the room. She latched onto her mother's hand, as tears streamed down her cherub face. Dawn was angry it wasn't fair; another child being ripped away from their parent. It wasn't long before Jude joined Lucy, Dawn went to a corner of the room. Layla's breathing was becoming hollow, Dawn knew what this meant.
For hundreds of years now she held the title of Legba's First, the commander of his forces and personal executioner, during her time, she had been in more battles on Earth and the in-between, than she cared to remember. Death had become a lover she hated, yet she danced with its ever-needy presence throughout her existence; now he would be coming again to take his newest dance partner. Another Heartfilia woman would dance among the stars again very soon.
Dawn looked at Layla's loving brown eyes one last time, when they greeted her blue orbs, she spoke with the air of a leader. "It's okay to go Layla your fight is over. I promise you Celestial mage to Celestial mage, I will do all I can to help Lucy. When I return, I will find her and do all I can to keep her safe." It was a promise she could make and keep, one only the two of them could hear.
Layla gave one last smile and Dawn listened as Layla's heartbeat started to slow. In the corner Dawn could see Legba's closest ally Baron Samedi, the head of the house of the dead, had come to personally escort Layla to the next plane.
As much as she wanted to beg the Baron to spare Layla, she knew it was fruitless, the Fates were about to sever the remaining thread of her life. No one could escape their fate, unless the Creator were to intervene, and Dawn had never heard of this happening; all living things were part of the universal balance. With birth would also one day bring death, the ultimate balance. With one breath… two… then three… the damn broke and the spark that was Layla Heartfilia was gone: hand in hand with the Baron.
In that instant Dawn heard a noise that reminded her of a banshee's cry, the pain, a gut-wrenching ache, her eyes shot to Lucy then to Jude, she could not be sure who released the shriek, she thought it may have been a combination of them both.
The wail had shaken Dawn to the core, each time she heard the cries, of those who lost someone they loved deeply it cut at her. Death wasn't supposed to be easy; the pain was truly for the living left behind, a test or challenge to the resilience of those who loved so deeply, could they become stronger and move forward, or crumble away buried under the misery.
Dawn found herself lost in a pool of emotions, blocking her out from everything around her she put her emotions away in her self-created space. She was suddenly pulled back away from the void, when she heard an enraged tone; Jude, he was yelling about something or someone. Refocusing her attention, a whimpering sound drew her eyes to Lucy. The little girl was grasping Jude's legs bawling, her world had just collapsed, she was holding on for dear life to the only parent she had left.
Jude's hand came down swiftly, Dawn's body reacted instantly, trying to place herself between Jude and Lucy. However, his hand glided through her ethereal form, striking Lucy so hard the child lost her grip as she tumbled to the ground, curling in on herself into the fetal position as if waiting on the next strike.
Suddenly the fire within Dawn began to seethe, boiling over with rage, at that moment she wished she had a body, cursing her incorporeal form. She wanted Jude to lunge at her, so she could show him how a DRAGON protects her family. If striking Lucy wasn't bad enough, Jude's words sealed his fate, 'I cannot stand to be in the presence of such weakness, Lucy your nothing like your mother, you are weak and pathetic. It should have been you that died not my Layla!'
In that moment Star promised herself upon her return, she would take care of Jude. She had promised Layla to help Lucy, and no one gets away with harming something precious to a dragon. Star like her brother was born a drake, she currently held the title of dragon Queen, she would get retribution for Lucy.
When Star returned home to Earthland, she would annihilate Jude Heartfilia for his crimes.
Since that day, Dawn had a new purpose, she needed a way to gain back control of her astral projections. It wasn't safe for her to just get pulled back to Earthland whenever Natsu or Lucy was in distress. To make things easier Dawn decided to make use of her favorite place in the in-between the Library of Souls, another thing the Creator had put under the care of Legba after the war of heaven.
Technically, the in-between's magic council frowned upon her for reading the soul books, but then again, they didn't like her period so learning more and rubbing their faces in it was a bonus. Dawn knew of a little-known loophole; one she was sure Legba had created just for this purpose. You see, any creature that ever possessed a soul at any point in its existence, had a book in the Library. The knowledge there was limitless you just needed to know what you were looking for and hoped the library didn't hide it from you.
The standing rule, one could not read of present-day events as they were ever evolving all due to possible changing events, the whole 'free will thing'. However, one could study to their hearts delight the past. Dawn knew that is where all the good information was stored anyway.
Remembering the haunting words of Winston Churchill 'those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.' No truer words had been spoken, for over the past centuries she studied the greatest minds on Earth as well as Earthland. All in preparation for her reuniting with her family.
Like her mother always said, 'work smarter not harder, knowledge is the true strength in any battle.' Even Igneel agreed with this logic, and dragons where all about who was the strongest, but he acknowledged strength was nothing if you didn't know how to use it to your advantage in a fight.
Today she found herself searching for the book of the greatest mage known to Earth, Merlin of the Isles. The vast knowledge of this mage was astounding, whenever she didn't have the answer to a puzzling questions Merlin would always have some knowledge on the subject, pushing her in the right direction. Again, the book had not failed her, giving her what she needed most; control of her projection and a way to safely dream walk into any person she chooses.
The only drawback, since Natsu and Lucy were linked to her by a blood spell, once she opened the door, it would mean they both would have the ability to walk through the same door, it was all part of the balance of the universe. Dawn just hoped they wouldn't figure out how to walk the astral plane. If things could only be so easy, the next several years would prove otherwise.
As time progressed Natsu and Lucy each dealt with the loss of a beloved parent. Each evening Dawn would try to visit them in their dreams; it was the only way to offer comfort while keeping them encourage to move forward with the promise that time would help lessen the pain.
Natsu was progressing much quicker than Lucy. He was beginning to thrive at the Fairy Tail guild, as he allowed others to get closer to him. It seemed he had instantly latched onto the guild master Makarov as a grandfather figure. While Gildarts was the father figure to the boy, which made sense to Dawn even she temporarily mistaking the man as Igneel's human form. Even if Natsu didn't have his memories, the mind is a tricky thing, storing away memories using them to push one toward those that bring a comfort, even if you don't understand why.
As the time ticked away Natsu had gained some close friends he saw as rivals; it was such a dragon trait, to pick those who represent strength. Gray and Erza, he would go on for hours talking about the arguments and fights they had, then the mischievous pranks they would play on each other. Dawn would listen to Natsu go on for hours while she visited his dreams, while she was happy, he had found a good home, it pained her deeply that she was not a part of it. When the boy would wake, she would be forgotten again a ghost lost in the fog of his memories.
Then one day a new girl joined the guild, with hair white as snow. Natsu told her how her giggle was contagious and her blue eyes rivaled Dawn's own, she was about two years younger than Natsu. Dawn instantly felt threaten by her presence, it was if she was taking her place in his heart. Natsu was drawn to the young girl, protective of her even. The closer the pair grew the less Dawn felt the pull of Natsu soul. He was becoming content, genuinely happy as he had been before Acnologia had ruined their families last days together.
On what would come to be her last visit for a great while, Natsu was overly excited. He had found what he thought was a dragon egg, it turned out to be a small blue flying cat he had named Happy. He told Dawn all about how he and his friend, Lisanna, cared for the egg until it hatched. Dawn laughed at Natsu's enthusiasm as he acted it all out and told about the fights, he got in.
Dawn was nearing her limit her strength fading, as she got ready to leave Natsu's smile dropped for a moment. He stared at Dawn with such intensity, "why can't I remember you when I wake? I try and each time it's like something is there I just can't remember you?"
Tears formed in Dawn's eyes, she never thought he was trying to remember, she just excepted her time in his dreams as good enough. In true Dawn fashion she told him the truth she would not lie to her brother, "it's because of a very strong spell."
Natsu rolled those words around in his mind, "why don't you age? Are you a ghost?"
"I'm not a ghost, but the last time you saw me I was seven and this is what I looked like."
"Can I ask ya somethin'…" Natsu wringed his hands together clearly uncomfortable, "it's kinda embarrassing."
Dawn smiled, "anything you want!"
With a sigh of relief, he began, "my friend Lisanna, she is um nice." Natsu's ears began to burn from embarrassment. "She said when we get older, she… wantstobemywife! But… I don't think I want that. She is really pretty, kind, even a good cook, but deep down… I don't feel right."
Star stepped over to her brother, and gave him a grin, knowing her time was short she was so very tired, "You're the son of a dragon king and a drake, so you will only want your mate. If you were a lesser dragon it would be different but because your strong only your mate will fulfill that part of you. Until you find them you probably won't care much about marriage and stuff like that. At least that is what Igneel told me back then. You're still a guy you will have urges but how strong they are is up to you."
Natsu stood there with his mouth agape, "how can you talk about that stuff so easy you're a little kid!"
"What?! You asked, anyway this is just the age your brain sees me as, that doesn't mean I'm still seven. Knucklehead!"
"Oh… so nothing is wrong with me?"
"Nope, just be yourself and be honest its what your best at anyway. Well I have to go I'm tired."
"Okay see you soon."
Dawn only smiled because she knew it would be a long time before or if she would visit Natsu again. He was doing well he didn't need her anymore at least for now.
It would be X782 before she would once again feel the pull of Natsu soul, however this time it was he that open the door seeking her out. In his distress his mind had astral projected his soul into her bedroom on Earth, she had just returned from a mission.
As she opened the door her eyes grew wide when she saw him there, quickly locking the door behind her so not to be interrupted. "What… how… how are you here?" she questioned. As she studied Natsu she could tell he was shocked by her presence too.
He moved quickly in front of Dawn. She was different this time older around her age… He gasped trying to stop the sobbing, her hair was the most brilliant shade of red, but her scent and eyes told him he was in the right place.
No longer able to hold back, his tears welled up, his eyes blood shot from the constant crying, he then blurted out, to the woman before him, knowing she would understand. "She's gone… Lisanna is dead."
Early morning 4th of June X783, Lucy was stretched out laying across her bed on her stomach. Her brown eyes locked in a staring match with the large glass French doors which led out to the balcony. She wished for nothing more than to venture out into the light, but her father had the doors sealed some time ago. Worried she would try to escape the grounds again; her room and the estate were now her gilded cage.
Breathing was hard, each breath causing the slightest of movement delivered excruciating pain. Her back was decorated with marks that were raw and stung, a result of her father's drinking, and her defiance against his will. Her back along with her dignity were the latest reminders, he planned to break the young heiress will, forcing her to submit to his demands.
The argument between father and daughter erupted over the soiree he was planning for her upcoming sixteenth birthday party, on July 1st. This would be the social event of the year, the next step toward building his empire. All eligible men of status had been invited, to see what he had to offer, his only offspring would be sold to the highest bidder. It did not matter to Jude the age of the man, his intentions, or desires, all he was concerned with was who would pay top dollar, Lucy was merely a rare and beautiful commodity.
Of course, that spoiled brat of his was refusing, saying she would not be sold like cattle. That is when Jude had to show her, her place. In the mist of the argument, he ordered two of the male domestics to chain her down on her stomach, securing her to his desk. The males stepped aside faced lowered in shame, they could not stomach to look at the young miss's face. They knew her father was ruthless and those withing the estate believed he took pleasure in his punishments. Jude walked up behind his daughters struggling body, dressed in one of the beautiful gowns he demanded she wear daily.
Jude then called for Spetto, he wanted his daughter and staff to know, there was a price for defiance, he would take Lucy's dignity today in front of others. He was going to show them all, the price for refusing his orders. As Spetto walked in she gasped seeing Lucy strapped to the master's desk. She could tell Lucy was scared and looked as if she wanted to cry, but the girl was stubborn just as Layla was, she refused to give her father the satisfaction of her tears.
"I want you all to watch and understand what happens to those who defy my will." Jude announced with a tone of pure viciousness. He had been drinking to celebrate his latest accomplishment, and his plans for his offspring.
The servants in the room looked at each other in horror. They did not dare to speak, the last time they had tried to help Lucy, Jude beat her so bad she was under the care of a family doctor for over a month. He threatened them all if a word got out, he would destroy all their families, he had the means to follow through on his threats. They wanted to leave, but they had been loyal to Layla and refused to leave Lucy behind, with the monster Jude Heartfilia.
Jude removed his jacket slowly then repeated with that same deliberate effort removing his tie, handing the clothing articles to Spetto. He then walked up to Lucy and leaned down whispering in her ear. "I own you! If I wanted to fuck you right here and now, NO ONE would stop me. Do you understand the power I hold, you ungrateful little bitch?"
Lucy feared her father, but she never felt he saw her sexually. She started to pull at her chains fearing just how far would this monster go to demonstrate his power. Jude laughed as he watched the tears form within his daughter's eyes, finally, the brat was starting to understand WHO was the master of this house. Everything she had and was, was because of his will.
Jude reached up grabbing a handful of Lucy's golden locks, yanking her head back at an awkward angle. He moved closer pulling his clothed length flat against her ass. Lucy was trying with all her might to get away, Jude leaned in again this time he was loud enough for the whole room to hear.
"Move your ass, entertain me!"
Lucy could not believe what was happening, they both were clothed but there was no way she would do that not with him, he was her father!
"NO!" She screamed back.
He increased the awkward angle of her neck, Lucy thought he was going to break it, as she screamed out in pain.
"I said… move your ass! Slut!"
"NO!" She was in pain, but she was not going to give into her father's demands.
Jude started to laugh manically, "Good! I'm glad you at least understand, I cannot have my prize commodity tainted, now can I? Your purity makes you ten times as valuable to your future suitor. With your marriage I will secure the business deal that will make the Heartfilia's one of most powerful families in Fiore, second only to the crown itself!"
He pulled himself away, Lucy blinked in confusion, her mind reflecting his words; had this all been to show his power? The thought made her sick to her stomach, but she survived, her breathing was beginning to even out. She should have known better; Jude was a predator, and he had just started to play with his prey. Just as she thought he was done with her the real punishment began. He grabbed the back of her dress shredding it down to the start of her skirt.
"You didn't really think you would get away with your actions so lightly, did you? Now for your punishment!"
There was only a moment of silence before he struck, Jude had removed his belt, and began to lash at Lucy's back. These were not the typical spanking a father may give to a child to correct bad behavior; no these were the slashes of an executioner punishing the guilty.
She could no longer hold back her screams, the space of the room seemed to magnify her cries. With each slash, wail, or tear, Jude became more zealous reveling in the pain he inflicted. Deep down Jude hated Lucy; she was a constant reminder of what he had lost when Layla died. He made sure Lucy paid for that agony, soon though his hurt would be over, and once he signed over his daughter to marriage he would become as powerful as the King himself.
After several minutes Lucy passed out from the pain, the strikes began to break through her soft tender skin, releasing with it a crimson flow of fluids painting her entire back. Once Jude heard leather hitting blood, he regained his composure. For a moment he stepped back a look of horror painted his face, realizing what he had done in his drunk anger filled state, but he replaced it quickly, with a blank stare.
"Spetto, you and the others clean up this mess. Get the doctor, make sure there are no scars, but no medicine for the pain do you understand me! I want her to feel this for days, so she does not forget her place again."
Over the years Spetto had trained her facial expressions to give nothing more than a blank slate. In this house emotions would get the young miss hurt more, Jude was not blind he knew Layla's old staff, loved Lucy, and would do anything for her. Which allowed him to control them with Lucy's pain.
"As you wish master Jude." Spetto replied in a tone cold as ice as she gave a simple bow. Jude left the three staff members there to clean up his mess. Spetto instantly sent one of the men to fetch the doctor, the other she commanded he release Lucy from her chains.
The man across from her, started to sob, "pull yourself together! We must get Miss Lucy upstairs quickly. If you think Jude is not watching us, then you're a fool." Spetto quietly chided, the man pulled himself together, awaiting her next instruction.
Spetto removed her apron wrapping it around Lucy's destroyed back, "quickly now, we need to take Miss Lucy to her room."
The male servant and Spetto made it upstairs in record time. She ushered the man to Lucy's private bathroom; she began to run the water as hot as she thought Lucy's body could take it. With the bath half-full Spetto rushed out of the room to Lucy's special hiding spot. She returned with a golden key; the males eyes went wide.
"Is that one of Lady Layla's keys? Master Jude has been tearing the manor apart trying to find them."
"Yes, and I have been helping Lucy hide them. Now please step back Aquarius is difficult on her best days, but when she sees Lucy, her rage maybe to uncontrollable." Spetto warned, while silently she hoped she wasn't making the wrong decision calling her.
The male had a questioning look, "then why call her?"
"She has the strongest connection to Lucy, and she can protect her to a degree. More importantly, I need her to help me free this child from this prison before it's too late."
"Do it then, anything to free Miss Lucy from this hell."
Spetto, hoped she had enough magic to request an audience with such a strong spirit, as she plunged Aquarius's key into the tub. "Please hear my plea Celestial King, please open the gate of the water bearer Aquarius!"
A golden light appeared and a beautiful mermaid in the most dazzling colors of blue appeared, "you better have a damn goo… Oh my god LUCY what has that bastard done to you!"
"Aquarius, please I need your help, but we must be quiet. We must get Lucy out on her sixteenth birthday, or she may be lost to us forever. Master Jude is gone to sell her off to the highest bidder."
Enraged Aquarius looked at the male servant holding her master, "you there, give me my master and get the fuck out!"
The male did not hesitate to hand over the limp bleeding body of Miss Lucy to the mermaid, he then turned to Spetto awaiting instructions.
"Go clean Jude's office. When the doctor arrives send him to me. Once the cleaning is complete, and the doctor is gone, gather everyone and bring them to Miss Lucy's room. Do you understand?"
"Yes…"
While Spetto had been giving instructions to the male servant, Aquarius had removed what was left of Lucy's ruined dress. She carefully placed her master's body in the water making sure to lean her over the side so her back was exposed.
Spetto returned without a word, kneeling next to the bath, she grabbed the softest cloth she could find and began to clean Lucy's wounds. Even though the girl was still unconscious her body still jerked with pain from the cleaning. Finally, the blood had all been removed, leaving the water a sick shade of red. Aquarius looked down in disgust placing her hand into the tainted water, as her hand began to glow the water became cleared as if it hadn't just held a gruesome sight.
The water spirit looked over to the maid, "I want to know everything, leave nothing out!"
Spetto did not hesitate, as she told the water bearer all that had transpired.
After the doctor finished healing Lucy the best he could, he headed straight for Jude, he knew the man did not care for the girl. This, however, was barbaric, he had held his tongue for too long, he could not turn a blind eye again to his cruelty, no longer could he be a quiet lap dog for Jude Heartfilia.
He barged into the library, "Mr. Heartfilia, how could you! What kind of monster wants to destroy his only child!"
"Doctor how dare you just barge in, you work for me, and I will not allow you to speak to me in that manor. I own you!"
"No more Mr. Heartfilia, I quit I will no longer play party to your monstrous acts against a defenseless child. LAYLA'S CHILD!"
"Don't you dare say her name!"
"I will! If Layla were here, she would kill you for your acts!"
Jude's expression grew dark, "maybe if you were any kind of real doctor maybe she would still be here!"
"Blame me all you want, but we both know the truth, YOU were the one that was too blind to see that she was ill. Now it's YOU that is trying to kill the last good thing left of Layla."
"As if you know anything. Tell me will there be any scars? I need her body to be perfect for her future husband."
"A little late for that if there are any physical scars those will be on you! However, the mental scars you have placed on that child will be felt for years! Layla would be so ashamed!"
"GET OUT!"
"I plan on it, oh an Mr. Heartfilia you had better keep your temper in check. No other doctor in the area will work for you. I've made sure of that, you see I let them know what kind of monster you really are, so if you want Lucy in the best condition possible you better stay away from her until the day you auction her off."
The doctor stormed out leaving Jude fuming. Less than a month he could make it that long, even if he had to keep the brat locked up in the estate. No one was going to get in the way of his plans.
Spetto was replaying the new she had just received they had another ally. The doctor, he was repulsed at what Jude had done, for years he had been fixing Lucy up after Jude's beatings.
'Spetto, this must end, Lucy will not survive another beating like this, Jude will kill her next time in his blood lust. I have a plan that will keep him away from her until the party. You have to find a way to get Lucy out of here!'
Those words gave Spetto the confidence they were going to free Lucy. Pulling herself together she checked to make sure the doors were locked, once she deemed the space as safe, she called Aquarius back. Advising her what the doctor had done to help. The water bearer nodded in approval then took one of the rings adorning her tail and placed it on Lucy's wrist.
"This will allow her to sleep, make sure you put it on her each night and remove it in the morning. However, it will only be good for the next five days. She is most vulnerable at night, just in case Jude forgets the doctors warning and goes on one of his drinking binges and decides to take it out on Lucy while she sleeps, the bracelet will open a portal to my home within the Celestial Kingdom."
"Spetto, I need you to keep Lucy calm until the 1st. When you believe she is ready tell her the plan, you must keep her spirits high and give her hope." Aquarius said solemnly as she looked down on her sleeping mistress.
Spetto nodded, "after the five days of rest I will tell her everything. Aquarius… I have located Taurus' key; I plan to send Lucy there so she can make her first official contract."
"Good, that will give her four of the golden keys, tell me, have you located Capricorn's holder?"
"No, my lady, Zoldeo has not been seen since the day Layla died."
"Fuck… he took off with the key! ARGH!"
Aquarius was livid, Capricorn was strong, fast, and skilled in hand to hand combat, his key would certainly help Lucy with crucial training.
"Well we will have to do this without him."
Aquarius looked out to the faces of each of the faithful servants who had served Layla, their count was dwindling with only a handful remaining. Jude was no fool, he knew their loyalty was to his daughter; so, he started to remove anyone who became an issue, replacing them with people loyal to him due to the money he paid.
"Listen up, you all know the plan right!" Aquarius yelled.
Each of the servants nodded in agreement, "good, I'll be back on the 1st, each of you stay safe."
With a pop of light Aquarius was gone, back to the Celestial Kingdom.
Cancer was pacing back and forth as he waited for the mermaid. A menacing aura appeared signaling her return.
"How is Miss Lucy?"
Aquarius shook her head, "she'll be okay; the plan is set to get her out of there. Did you find him?"
"Yes, he is in the great hall waiting for you, he is not happy we summoned him."
Aquarius sighed, "didn't figure he would be, but I know he cares for Lucy, so hopefully he will help."
"Agreed, but do you think he can convince her to help?"
"Of that I'm sure, the girl will go through hell, to help her family. Even if that means teaming up with those she might see as enemies."
Cancer stopped, putting his head down, "do you think she still's sees us that way… as the enemy?"
Aquarius turned to the crab spirit releasing a heavy sigh, "after what we did… I would… wouldn't you?"
He lifted his shade covered eyes to meet her blue ones, he was looking for a sign of hope, "but back on Earthland we ha…"
"It was a truce… that's not the same as forgiveness. You know that Cancer. We all deserve their hate for what we did, it doesn't matter how we try to justify it. Our actions almost drove him insane. If it weren't for her escaping when she did, I'm not sure he wouldn't have ended up like Acnologia. Somehow she brought him back from that void of despair."
Cancer flinched at Aquarius words; dropping his head he knew she was right, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. When he looked back up the water spirit was gone, 'please help us… no not us, Lucy', he prayed out to the universe.
As Aquarius entered the great hall, her guest was standing with his back to her. He was in his true form, staring up at the cosmos. Aquarius admired him in that moment, the sight of him always took her breath away every time. As one of the Celestial creatures he was truly a marvelous sight; strength, skills, intellect, and bound by legendary belief of honor.
He heard her approach but would not give her the satisfaction of turning to greet her, "what the FUCK do'ya want from me!" His tone held a harsh bite, something Aquarius had grown use to over the years.
The water spirit herself did not possess a cool calm temper, no, she was a force of nature a hurricane of fury. Her annoyance was evident, yet she forced herself to remain calm, her master needed her. She would swallow her pride, beg if need be for his help.
Wasting no time, "I need your help." She stated calmly.
He didn't know if it was her soft tone or the fact she was asking for help, that shocked him to his core. He had never known the mermaid to be so submissive. He turned his glowing white eyes down to meet her deep blue, which reminded him of the deepest part of the ocean.
"What could ya possibly NEED from me?" he demanded.
In grueling detail Aquarius explained the day's events. He remained quiet while she talked, but the water maiden could see his anger building as it rippled across his cosmic skin. When she was done, he let out a mighty roar.
"THAT FUCKING BASTARD! How could he hurt her, his own damn child! She is the kindest kid I've ever met."
He already knew how, one of the many reasons he and his mistress feared Lucy's fate before their removal years before.
Realization hit him, why since their return six years ago, Dawn had to know! Everything made sense now, why his own mistress hadn't been sleeping since her return, her need to gain control of her astral projections. Why she was breaking into the Library of Souls, the urgency to learn how to dream walk.
"Will you ask her to help?"
"Yeah... whatchaya need?"
Stunned by his quick willingness to agree, she proceeded, "I need her to find a way to make contact with Lucy; she is the only one alive that can give her the confidence to run."
The dragon looked away for a moment pondering, before slowly looking back to Aquarius, he debated on how much he should tell the mermaid. The tension between the Celestial dragons and the Zodiac was complicated, but this wasn't about the past; Lucy was in trouble, and he knew his mistress would want him to help the girl.
"Well ya see… she's been already doin that."
"What? How!"
"Her abilities ain't been right since we got back, her soul was even forced into a projection to be there for Layla's passing."
"That's… it's not possible! She shouldn't be able to astral project back to Earthland."
"Yeah well… ya tell that to kiddo. After been yanked back that first time; she went on the defensive. Now she's gained control she's been visiting Natsu and Lucy while they dream."
"What did she do?" Aquarius loved Anna but knew she could be reckless, and her daughter was proving to be even worse.
"Let's just say I don't approve, but she is gonna do what she wants. I ain't a fan of it, but damn she get's results. If there is a way that girl will find it!"
The two shook their heads in a rare moment of understanding, "does Natsu or Lucy remember her?"
"Naw… Legba's spell won't allow that, it's not time; but doesn't mean there ain't an affect. Seems her dream walkin makes the two of them feel less alone. Ya know… it was Layla's last request for Star to find a way to help Lucy." Wanting to prove his point the dragon spirit gave a knowing smirk to the questioning water maiden.
"Tell me something… has miss Lucy been increasing in defiance since Star left?"
Aquarius had a blank stare then an evil grin grew, no matter how much Jude hurt Lucy, within a couple of days her rebelliousness would come back stronger than ever.
He could read the water bears expression and equally mischievous smile grew across his face, "now… who do ya think that sounds like? Huh…"
Aquarius threw her head back releasing a loud cackle, of course Layla would have seen the truth, and done anything to protect Lucy. So, she got the one soul that would find a way to break the rules to help.
The mermaid calmed, regaining her menacing aura, "we have a limited amount of time, she is going to need to push harder. Lucy's resolve has to be absolute on July 1st for this to work."
"Understood…"
Aquarius looked over to the dragon with a sad smile, "Draco... Thank you."
"Let's get this straight, I ain't helpin you. This is for Miss Lucy. Oh… one more thing, ye'all better hope Jude is dead before kiddo makes it back to Earthland. Cause he will be first on her hit list, and ain't none of her dragon's gonna stop her. NO ONE can stop an enraged dragon, no one."
Aquarius gave an ominous snicker, her aura turned dark as a storm brewed in her eyes. "That I WOULD like to see!"
July 1st was fast approaching; the last six years had left Dawn physically and mentally exhausted. Since the re-merger of her soul six years prior, her life had been put on a fast-forward.
The only comfort was the hunters had been quieter, allowing life for Underlings to be bit more relaxed, it could have been due to the historic events that were being played out on Earth or that humans were becoming more of a threat. Maybe the old worries of ancient times were finally dying out; somehow Dawn knew this was only the calm before the storm. A backfire was brewing it would only be a matter of time before the explosion would be felt.
As a part of Legba's rebirth army, and specifically his First, life was anything but easy. Her job was to protect the humans from the humans and Underlings any that would use magic for evil. In the middle of all this Dawn had her second child, a little girl which she named Tessa, it meant 'the gather' in Greek. She like her mother was a dragon but she also welded Celestial magic just like the Heartfilia's before her.
Tessa was the female version of her older brother Aiden. The only difference was she had her mother's blue eyes; but like her brother, her skin was sun-kissed, black hair with cherry blossom tips, and small fangs. Another reminder of Natsu, how she long for her brother to meet her children, knowing he would be ecstatic to be and uncle. Every time she would take a moment to bask in those dreams, she would become sullen, forcing herself to tuck away her feelings, Natsu wasn't there, and when she returned there was no assurances he would even remember her.
She would then wonder why the fates had blessed her with two precious children, what had she done right to deserve them. Yet even that blessing had its drawbacks, having two children; even though she was less in the eyes of the Fey courts. As they believed she was adopted by Kalen the first prince, she still held the title of the first princess, re-birth warrior or not. This coupled with the fact she was giving life to a dying lineage of the Underlings; this meant the royal courts could no longer disregard her. Fey children had become exceptionally rare after the war of heaven, being nearly wiped out. This growing interest among the Underlings had the in-between magic counsel watching Legba's prodigies every move.
This current re-birth life was anything but normal, as a re-birth she had retained this body for a long time. Her normal life span barely a year or two, her soul was usually placed in a body that was not long for this world. The few times she was granted a new vessel from birth, but even then, she rarely lived past 17. This was the normal, getting killed in the line of duty for most re-birth warriors, sacrifices were just part of the job.
Stranger yet, since her first original life on Earth with her father Kalen, she never had parents, she was always an orphan, making it easier to just get lost among people. This life however, had granted her a Fey mother and of all things an ex-hunter for a father. Kalen was not happy with an ex-hunter near his daughter or any Underling for that matter, but love won the day. Dawn believed fate again played its part in her strange existence.
Kalen and the man raising her had formed an unusual bond. Each trying to learn more about the other over the years, eventually earning the others respect. If Dawn were to guess both men had become close friends even if they denied it amongst others. This lifeline was proving to be perplexing, emotionally draining, and wonderful all at the same time.
This abnormal life brought apprehension for both Finn and Draco. Each tried discussing with Dawn about pushing herself to far, which earned them a growl that she was 'FINE'. The only good thing the two could agree on was all the dream walking kept Dawn so busy her nightmares had almost completely stopped. Far too busy with her responsibilities: a mother, princess, the First, Natsu, slayers, Lucy, and whatever Legba would throw her way.
In each of her rebirth lives, Dawn was feared and hated by the Sidhe of the Light Fey Court, it was the same with those of who held the power within the in-between's magic counsel; all because Legba chose her. That coupled with her peculiar magic aura, had placed a target on her back, since she was born. The weight she carried was numbing, if it were not for her close circle consisting of family and friends along with her Celestial dragons, she was sure she would have abandoned all hope long ago. Yet she knew she could not give up; Natsu, the dragon slayers, and Lucy, they needed her. She promised them she would be back, and as a Celestial mage she would not break that promise.
Shortly after her return to Earth, Dawn learned only Natsu had been found by Fairy Tail, the other four slayers missing. This left her terrified, wondering what had happened to them. Her panic was only comforted once Igneel's soul fragment, cased within her mother's necklace; assured her the others were fine, and she need not fret. She was about to argue, but there was something in the tone of Igneel's voice that gave her peace.
That left the immediate threat of Jude: oh, how she wanted to slit that man's throat. His actions toward Lucy unforgivable, yet vengeance would have to wait, her focus had to stay on helping Lucy, and the best way to help was to reinforce her resolve. So, for the next six years, each night Dawn would dream walk in either Natsu or Lucy's dreams, many nights she visited both placing a significant magical drain on the young mother of two.
Then in early June Draco was called to the Celestial Kingdom, the request coming from none other than Aquarius. She was currently on an assignment when the dragon was called to meet, Dawn urged him to go, knowing in her gut something was very wrong. She hadn't been able to visit Lucy for several months; Finn and the others needed her strength to help infiltrate another cult which was stealing humans with weak Underling bloodlines. Her focus had to be in the present she was the First and this assignment had been issued directly to her command.
She did what was needed of her, leaving her to anxiously wait for Draco's returned. When her spirit finally made it back, he fell to his knees in front of his master sobbing. It broke his heart to tell his mistress what had occurred. Dawn was rattled with guilt she had been the one pushing Lucy to stand up for herself, advising her not to let her father dictate her life, she was allowed to have choices. She had done what Layla had requested, but this… Her actions could have cost Lucy her life, Dawn knew Jude had a darkness, and that made him dangerous.
"Draco, what have I done?" Dawn cried out. Finn reached out trying to comfort his wife, but she slapped his hand away as she stepped back, refusing any type of comfort.
"Kiddo, it ain't ya fault." Draco tried to reason.
"THE HELL IT ISN'T! Don't give me that crap." Dawn threw her hands into her hair pulling at the roots as her tears began to fall.
Then with a closed fist she began to hit her chest as she chastised herself, "I'm the one that told her live the life she wanted! I'm the one who said not to back down to Jude! I'm the one that…"
Finn grabbed her hand pulling her into a tight embrace, "yeah Spitfire, you did do those things. But I know from Draco, you also saved that girl. You give her hope, a reason to push forward, and now your gonna push her to escape."
"I…I can't… I…"
"Hush… yeah you can. You will finish what you started." Finn stated with confidence as he continued to hold his wife tight as she shook. Finn's eyes found Draco's it appeared they were thinking the same thing, these events might just push Dawn over the edge back to that dark place she had worked so hard to escape.
Lucy was just too kindhearted just like her mother, part of Dawn wished she could just convince Lucy to cut her father down while he slept. 'Bad Dawn, you have got to stop these dark thoughts! Lucy is the light in the darkness, hell that is what her name means light.' Dawn argued with herself.
Lucy was no murderer; she always saw the good in things, she still didn't understand there were those that help nothing but darkness. No, Lucy was not like her, damaged and broken, and she vowed she would not be the one responsible for showing her the ugliness that man could produce. Unfortunately, life would teach Lucy those lessons sure enough, but that cold reality would not come from her own hand.
So, for now, Dawn's focus was to give Lucy the conviction she needed to run, it was for her own self-preservation, her freedom, this… this she could do. She not only had to show her how to escape the manor, but how to stay hidden, and how to fend for herself with less than a month. The biggest hurtle was it had to be Lucy's resolve to flee. The only way to know how Lucy was feeling was to go talk to her.
Dawn waited the five days before coming to visit, as much as she wanted to rush to Lucy's side she needed to rest, and from what Draco said, Aquarius and Spetto were keeping her safe. This month was crucial, so Dawn sent her children to stay with her older brother Michaelis, and Grandpa Kalen. Both men where excited to have time with the children so they could teach them the ways of the Fey, and to just forget about the problems of the world, if even for only a month.
Dawn took a long bath relaxing the best she could, Finn and Draco were keeping watch, even she feared what she might do unconsciously when she saw Lucy. Once everything was in place she went into a meditative state, slowing her breathing which allowed her soul to be set free as she had done hundreds of times before, she saw the door hesitating only a moment as she proceeded to walk through.
As the door opened, she realized she was in Lucy's room, it was illuminated by only the light of the full moon outside. She walked over to Lucy's bed, but she was not there, normally she would have been asleep by this time of night; being so focused on finding Lucy, Dawn did not notice the figure hiding away in the darkest corner of the room.
Dawn heard the crack of a whip and only had a second to get out of the way. A normal whip would have gone right through her spiritual form; however, Dawn knew that was Lucy's Celestial weapon and she didn't want to take a chance on what damage it might have caused.
Turning quickly Dawn spun herself around and found herself staring eye to eye with Lucy. Dawn's heart clinched she could see Lucy was in physical and emotional pain, she was holding a fighting stance, but her body was shaking with discomfort.
"Who are you and why are you in my room!" Lucy demanded her breathing was haggard, but she stood strong.
Dawn's voice was caught in her throat, as if by instinct she stepped closer to Lucy, when she passed in front of the widows of her balcony Lucy gasped.
"I… I can see right through you. Are you a ghost?" Lucy sputtered as she stumbled backward trying to put some distance between them.
Dawn stopped advancing and looked down to her hands, she was still in astral form, meaning Lucy was awake and could see her. This didn't make sense she should have been in her dream not like this, but that could only mean one thing. Lucy had unlocked the knowledge stored within her subconscious on how to project. There was only one way to be sure, so Dawn spoke hoping she would hear her.
"Lucy… You can see me? Really see me?"
"You can speak… How do you know my name? Are you a ghost trapped on these lands; I've heard stories the estate is haunted?"
Dawn couldn't help but laugh, "no… I'm not a ghost. I've known you for a while; your Lucy Heartfilia the daughter of Layla."
Lucy's eyes lit up, "you knew my mother?"
"Yes, I did. She was a true lady, so kind, loving and warm; and you, dear Lucy where her entire world."
Lucy studied the presence before her, she could tell spirit or whatever she was, was being sincere with her praise of her beloved mother. This brought tears of joy to her eyes and a warmth to her heart she had not felt in so long.
"Thank you so much for your kind words… But who are you, and why have you come here?" Lucy questioned, as she studied the image of the girl in front of her. She looked just like her except this being had crimson hair and the most beautiful crystal blue eyes.
"I'm called Dawn, and I'm here because of you Lucy. I want to help you."
Lucy studied the aura before her, but something wasn't right, she could feel it in her gut. She didn't believe the being was lying, more like she was leaving something important out. If this 'Dawn' wanted to really help her, Lucy wanted to know who she truly was. It was lingering in the back of her mind; she knew the answer it was scratching to get out.
"Dawn you say… But let's be honest that's not your real name, is it? While it might be true your called Dawn by some, WHO… are you to me!" Lucy quipped back with a level of authority she didn't realize she possessed.
Dawn arched her eyebrows, impressed with Lucy's savvy approach, none of this made any sense so she decided to do what she always did, go with the truth.
"You know me by my real name, Star, I'm your cousin."
Lucy stood frozen as bits and pieces of her memories flooded back into her mind, most of it was hazy but she knew to her core this was the truth. In an instant she could see them running together, going to lessons, and playing in the nearby cave for hours.
A small sob released from her clinched throat; she had missed her so much. "You… you're not supposed to be here. This has to be your astral projection!" Lucy cried out wanting to jump for joy.
Worried Lucy was getting too loud, she brought her finger to her lips to try and quiet down her cousin. "Lucy shhh… I don't want Jude to hear you. Your right I shouldn't be able to do this, but it doesn't matter I'm here to help you. I don't even know if you'll remember me when I leave, so we have to get to work right away."
"Help… me… What… What do you mean?" Lucy was ashamed, she seemed to collapse in on herself, she felt helpless against her father. This was the second time he almost beat her to death over refusal to do as commanded of her. She didn't want her cousin to worry about her, this mess was of her own doing, Lucy felt useless.
"Oh, come off it Heartfilia... I know everything, Aquarius requested Draco's aid so I would come."
"You shouldn't have wasted your time…" Lucy mumble as she hung her head down in shame, hugging herself for comfort.
"LUCY HEARTFILIA! Don't you ever let me hear you speak about yourself like that again! DO YOU HEAR ME!" Dawn had moved so quickly Lucy didn't see her until she was mere inches from her face.
Stunned Lucy stumbled backward, "oh okay..."
Dawn shook her head as she released a long sigh, "this is not your fault. You didn't do anything wrong; your dad is just a serious piece of shit!"
Lucy gasped then started to giggle, she had forgotten how Star would just say what was on her mind when it was just the two of them alone. Often, she would let curse words slip out without a care in the world, but around others she was always the perfect lady. For the first time since her mother died, Lucy felt hopeful.
"Uhm… so, you're really gonna help me." Lucy's eyes widened with anticipation.
Dawn gave her cousin a wide evil grin, "oh yeah… I have a plan, but it's gonna be up to you to pull it off."
Dawn was pleased with Lucy's progress over the month, even with only being able to project that one time. Her remaining visits had all been dream walks, and as she had feared, Lucy forgot she had been there. Yet, that first visit had done the trick, Lucy's resolve was stronger than ever. At the ball tonight Lucy was going to break free of her cage.
To help aid in her escape, Dawn had two important gifts for her. First was a pair of heart shaped earrings made of ruby crystals. She weaved just enough magic into the gems to create a weak form of a Fey glamour spell, so weak it would not be sensed by a possible magic tracker. Dawn had been sure Jude had them installed on the property to track Lucy, in case she tried to use Layla's Celestial keys, luckily, the keys had been moved outside the house.
The beauty of the earrings was all Lucy had to do was wear them, if she were to feel threaten the spell would activate hiding her for a short amount of time in plain sight. Each person would see her appearance differently, once the spell was activated it would last roughly a week. It would have to do; it would give her time to gain some distance from the estate.
The second item was jewel, Lucy had no access to her funds, Jude controlled everything at the estate even her inheritance from her mother, not a problem for Dawn. She sent gold bars for Draco to give Aquarius to exchange for jewel. The dragon told the water barer to tell Lucy the items were passed down from an ancestor, which of course was true. Now it was all up to Lucy and the staff at the estate to complete the plan. The next twelve hours would be some of Dawn's longest.
Lucy stared at her reflection in the mirror, today was the day. She would embark on a new adventure and leave this hell behind. As excited as she was for the prospect for her future there was also a level of sadness for her mother grave was here, and her only remaining friends, the few remaining staff members of Layla's who were willing to risk it all for her.
She rose from her seated position making her way out to her mother's garden to give her final good-bye. Since the ball was mere hours away, many of the guest or suitors had arrived earlier in the week. Jude personally requesting each come to stay at the estate; Lucy believe it was so he could show off the daughter he planned to auction off to the highest bidder.
This led to Jude unlocking the manor which allowed Lucy to freely walk out to the garden. For now, she played nice, even requesting the company one of the guards as she walked about freely. She would not be caught off guard again, a suitor had cornered her in the hall two nights previously, her only savior from the vile man was Spetto as she whisked Lucy back to her room.
With her head held high, shoulders back the perfect example of a proper lady Lucy seemed to float across the yard to her mother's grave. Lucy had chosen this guard as he had proven himself a professional, yet courteous by taking a step back to give Lucy privacy as she clutched her hands closing her eyes to say a light prayer.
Once she was finished Lucy stepped forward placing her hand on the smooth marble as she had done so many times before, it always felt the same, cool even in the direct light of day. With her finger she drew an invisible pattern on the headstone, once complete a small space opened; hidden from view by Lucy's full skirts she grabbed the small bag hidden inside and quickly stuffed it into one of the many hidden pocket's Spetto had woven into all her outfits.
There inside the bag where her mother's keys along with the silver ones Spetto had acquired for her. Lucy stepped closer to the stone, placing her head against her mother's name, with a quick flick of her wrist the space closed. As she started to walk away, she turned to look back over her shoulder, "good-bye mother." It was barely a whisper her eyes reflected the sadness of her voice. Her guard looked to Miss Lucy with questioning eyes.
"Miss?"
"Yes?"
"If I might, there is no need to be sad, I'm sure once your married you will be visiting the estate regularly." He really didn't know the young miss, only seeing her a couple of times but each time her eyes were laced in sadness, and her smile was clearly fake for anyone that would take the time to notice.
Lucy released a harsh laugh, "you really don't understand who you work for, do you?"
She walked away as regal as any member of royalty, the guard was shocked by her statement he thought to himself, 'it must be true what the others say, Mr. Heartfilia had truly broken his daughter's will.'
Lucy had barely closed the door to her room when Spetto popped out from her bathroom, "so how did it go?"
Startled, Lucy jumped a bit, "Spetto! Don't scare me like that!" She gave her most trusted maid a small grin as she shook her head. "He bought the act, thinks I'm a broken little girl. I also have my keys."
Lucy moved to get out of her day dress, to prepare for this evenings events she couldn't be late, everything had to go as planned. Spetto stepped over to assist with removing her casual corset. The dress she would be wearing this evening was made of white silk accented with crystals and scrolls of red and silver about the bodice. Lucy was sure Jude had picked white to make sure she looked as much like a bride as possible, he allowed her only the choice of accent color. Red and silver to match her heirloom earrings that Aquarius had brought her.
Once free from her day attire, Spetto was quick to place a lightweight corset over Lucy's head, made special it had jewel placed in secret pockets, just incase the plan were to go awry Lucy would have something to flee with. Next was the small pouch that held Lucy's keys, it was attached with a garter securing it tightly to her thigh, they could take no chances, and Lucy wanted her keys as close as possible. Spetto then helped Lucy into her gown; it was tailored perfectly to accent Lucy's natural curves. Accentuating her plentiful chest, fitted tightly to her tiny waist, yet the skirt was full as not to give everything away. Once everything was in place Spetto went to work on Lucy's hair pulling it up into a delicate bun accented with delicate braids, with a few red crystals and silver beads.
"Now Lucy, everything is ready, as soon as you get the chance to slip away, go out through the kitchen. Then head straight to the cave near the boarder of the estate. Everything you need is in bags there, do not look back, get to the cave, change your clothes, and run! Do you understand me?"
"Yes Spetto. Thank you for everything."
"If you want to thank us, get away from here. Go on the adventures your mother wanted you to have. Live your life." Spetto grabbed Lucy's hands rubbing them, she looked into Layla's daughter's eyes one last time, and knew she was doing the right thing.
A knock came to the door, Lucy knew this would be the performance of her life, she lifted her chin high, back straight as Spetto when to answer the door.
"Ah I see you are ready." His voice was cold, but from the look on his face, Lucy could tell he approved of her appearance.
"Come I do not wish to keep our guest waiting." Jude commanded.
With a light nod, "yes father," she moved to stand next to the man she had come to loath. She donned the appropriate fake smile she had learned to perfect over the years, as she placed her hand on her fathers outstretched arm with practiced ease.
Hours had passed as she was twirled around the room with exceptional grace, very much playing the part of gracious host, and aristocrat. Many of the men had hands that wanted to wander down past her waist, yet each time this would happen a new suitor would appear for his chance to dance with the prize of the Heartfilia empire.
It was nearing midnight when she was finally hoping for a moment to rest, when her father requested a dance with his only child. In proper fashion Lucy curtsied to her father allowing him to lead her across the great hall. Lucy knew this was all an act to keep up appearances for her father, as he spun her across the floor, he whispered so only she could hear.
"I'm glad to see you have finally learned some respect, and now understand your position in the family."
Lucy gave a polite smile, "yes father."
"This plan has gone better than I could have ever imagined. Currently I have requests from twelve suitors bidding for your hand in marriage. Once the song is over, I will be negotiating in my office. Since you have done so well tonight, take a moment to eat something light, and mingle with our guest, when I return, I will announce your engagement.
"Yes father, thank you."
"Lucy, you will see how all my hard work, will benefit the Heartfilia's for generations to come."
As the music stop Lucy bowed to her father and the room exploded with clapping for the pair, Lucy was an angel on the dance floor. As Jude walked away, she watched careful counting out twelve suitors as they all went to Jude's office to bid on her hand in marriage.
Lucy made her way over to a quite corner while sipping a glass of water. She then mingled a bit as she nibbled on cheese and fruit to give her some energy. She watched the room carefully the guards were relaxed barely paying her any attention, all of them believing she had finally excepted her fate. She excused herself to go the washroom and that is when she made her break for the kitchen.
She slipped in quietly, removing her heals taking them with her so not to leave a trace of her escape route. Creeping out into the night she noticed the back light by the kitchen was out, she smiled to herself, Spetto had thought of everything. She stayed to the shadows of the house, once the area was clear she walked quickly and quietly as possible to her mother's gardens. There she was hidden from site, under the bench was a pair boots she quickly slid on and made her way to the cave near the border of the property.
She didn't know why but this cave was a special place, it was a place she only shared with her mother and Spetto. Little did she know this was Igneel's cave it held a special magic that protected her making it hard for anyone who would come upon it to find Lucy.
Once safely inside she stripped out of the gown and found the backpack with a pair on long pants and a long sleeve shirt. There was also a hat to help hide her hair. Lucy quickly pull on the new clothes. Inside the bag was a note with a map attached, she studied them both quickly before storing them away in her backpack. The instructions were in Spetto's handwriting, she was to head into the mountains, once she found a creek, she was to summon Aquarius.
There was also information on where to find Taurus's key it was near the valley of Peace Village about a week's walk away. Lucy was tired, but she had to get away from the estate there would be time to rest later, right now her new life was awaiting her. All she had to do was move forward and not look back.
Again I have been away for a bit, Covid-19 is doing crazy things to my schedule as I'm sure it is with most of you.
I was going to break this into 2 chapters, but I needed everyone to see what Natsu, Lucy and Dawn/Star had been experiencing over the years since the gate was re-open. It made more sense to me to keep it all together.
I hope you enjoy the chapter please PM me any questions or leave a comment.
Thanks again to everyone supporting me on this journey.
