Chapter 38

Hearing her cell begin to ring, Arizona slipped the device from her pocket as she looked back at one of the movers. "Thanks Jimmy, I gotta take this call but I'll meet you guys over at the house, OK?"

"Sure thing, Mrs Robbins."

Smiling as she watched the man pick up the last of what remained in Callie's apartment, she finally looked back at her cell, answering the call. "Hey Mom, how's things?"

"Hi honey, just thought I'd ring as see how moving day was going for you girls?"

"It's actually been the smoothest move I've ever experienced" she said with a laugh. "These guys have gone above and beyond taking the stuff down to the vans. I tried to help but they wouldn't let me, so I've pretty much just stayed up here overseeing things."

"You're hard work starts the minute the moving men leave and you're left with an upside down house. I'm sure you and Callie will get things put in their rightful place within the next few days though."

The blonde walked through the now empty living room, coming to a stop at the window. "Yea, we've both got the next few days off so I'm sure by the weekend, we'll be more or less sorted. Calliope had to go into work today though. She got paged in at 5 this morning. I was hoping she'd be back before now but…" she looked at her watch. "It's almost time for me to go pick up the kids. I'm just glad Carlos decided he wanted to be here for moving day. He's over at the house now, ready to tell the movers where things need to go."

"That's lovely dear. I'm so glad he's been coming over to see you both alot more since Lucia passed."

"Me too. I think being around the girls is really helping him."

"Ofcouse it will. I wish we could come out there and spend more time with the girls."

"Well you and dad can come out here anytime, you know that. There's more than enough room at the new house."

The blonde's parents had flown in for the weekend a few weeks earlier. They'd loved meeting Katie and had spoiled her just as much as they had Sofia. Callie had also driven them out to see their new house. Having not been in possession of the keys then, it had merely been a view from the outside.

"Oh I know and we will, honey. We thought we'd give you a chance to get yourselves settled without having to dote on your parents aswell. We'll fly over in a couple of weeks, if that's Ok with you?"

"Yea, like I said anytime. Mom, I better head out and get the girls. I'll give you a call tomorrow and let you know how we're getting on, OK?"

"Ofcourse, good luck with the rest of the move honey. Give Sofia and Katie a kiss from their grandma and grandpa."

"I will, bye mom." Hanging up, Arizona turned and looked around the empty room. Moving through the apartment, she checked every room, making sure nothing was left behind. Coming out of the bedroom, she bumped into another figure. "Oh" she said, feeling her arms engulfed by 2 strong hands.

"Hey you" Callie smiled before leaning in to place a soft kiss on her wife's lips.

"Hey yourself. Thought you'd show up once all the hard work was done, huh?" she teased.

The Latina's arms slid down Arizona's arms and linked themselves around the blondes waist. "Sorry. An 18 year old jumped in front of a van this morning. Both his legs got caught under the tyres, aswell as his right arm. Surgery went on for…" she stopped as a yawn escaped her lips.

"That's awful. Is he OK?"

Callie shrugged. "Physically, in time he should be able to walk again. Mentally, I'm not so sure. His sister was his next of kin and I spoke to her after I came out of surgery. Its apparently not the first time he's tried to take his own life. Long history of drug and alcohol addiction which apparently started when he was just 10 years old."

The blonde looked back at her sadly. "How on earth does a 10 year old get involved with drugs and alcohol? That's literally Sofia's age, Callie. Can you imagine our little girl doing that?"

The Latina shook her head. "No, not even slightly. She still plays with dolls for crying out loud. This boy got in with the wrong crowd in Brooklyn. He rebelled against his parents who were apparently threatened by this gang on more than one occasion."

Arizona stared back at her wife with an open mouth. "It's like a completely different world, isn't it?"

"If Sofia ever got in with the wrong crowd, she'd be grounded for the rest of her life. Same goes for Katie."

Arizona nodded as she thought about the little girl that had now been with them for 2 and a half months. Over the weeks, they'd watched her confidence grow and her relationship with Sofia become even stronger. As promised, they'd ventured to the Brooklyn bridge on several occasions now, where Katie could talk to her dad. Michelle's ashes had been released to them, however they decided to keep them and when Katie got older, she could decide what she wanted to do with them herself. "It's possible Katie could rebel as she gets older. She's had a traumatic first few years of her life. If she stays with us long term, we'll obviously do everything we can to instil good morals and values into her, but sometimes, no matter how hard you try, if your kid wants to rebel, they'll rebel."

"Oh no. No no no. No kid of mine will end up addicted to drugs or jumping in front of traffic to end their life. I'd rather die myself than sit and watch Sofia or Katie go down that rabbit hole. The first sign I get that they're getting out of line then they're locked in the attic and getting home schooled."

Arizona smiled as she looked back at her wife. "I'm sure our girls are gona be just fine. You're an amazing mom."

The Latina smiled back. "So are you."

Arizona shrugged nonchalantly. "I know" she replied before grinning. "Anyway, I was just on my way out to pick them up. Your dads at the house already."

"Ok, well how about you go get the kids, I'll go drop our keys off at the realtors and then I'll meet you back at the house?"

"Sounds like a plan."

As Arizona turned and drove her car up the drive, she smiled as she watched Carlos talking to the movers, pointing his hands in various directions. Bringing the car to a stop, she put the handbrake on and turned off the engine. "So, who's ready to see the new house?"

"Me" the girls said in unison.

"I cant hear you" Arizona told them. "I said, who's ready to see the new house…?"

"Me" they both squeal, more loudly this time.

Arizona laughed as she clicked her seatbelt off. "Well what are we waiting for, huh?" Exiting the car, she assisted both girls getting out before they slowly made their way to the front door. "Make sure you watch where you're going, OK? The movers are still bringing furniture into the house and you don't want to get flattened by a bed or a sofa."

"Ok mom, hey Grandpa" Sofia said as she took Katie's hand and all but dragged her through the front door.

"Hey grandpa" Katie mimicked the older girl, as they passed Carlos.

"Hello my beautiful girls.." he held out his hands but the girls were already running into the house. He frowned before looking back at his laughing daughter in law.

"The new house is alot more exciting than you right now I'm afraid Carlos."

The older man smiled. "So it would appear. Calliope is in the kitchen, already putting utensils in their rightful places."

Arizona rolled her eyes. "Ofcourse she is. Where else, would she be?"

"She's just like her mother in that respect. She always said the kitchen was the heart of the home. She loved it in there. She was an amazing cook. I'm sorry you never got to experience her cooking when she was fit and well."

The blonde smiled sadly back. "I'm sorry about that too but I guess I have the next best thing. Calliope always make us amazing meals."

"All her cooking skills came from her mother, I assure you" he said with a smile. He looked back in the house and watched as the girls ran up the stairs. "I'll go see how the girls are getting on while you go see your wife."

"OK, thanks" she replied, watching as he moved into the house. Glancing back around the outside, she spotted someone driving by in a car waving over. She lifted her arm, waving back as they drove off. A friendly neighbourhood is exactly what they were hoping for. Turning she headed into the kitchen, finding her wife elbow deep in one of the boxes. "You're in your element right now, aren't you?"

Callie laughed. "I'm not gona lie Arizona, I had a wet dream about this lastnight."

The blonde laughed as she moved closer. "You realise that I'm now thinking about you standing in here with nothing but a very skimpy apron on?"

The Latina turned to face her wife. "Play your cards right and maybe your thoughts will become a reality sometime."

The blondes hand reached out to caress Callie's hip. "I'll be looking up skimpy aprons on ebay the first chance I get." After a quick kiss, Arizona watched on as Callie continued to unpack a box. "I realise you're straight on with the unpacking but maybe it would be better if we order a chinese for dinner later?"

"Yea, I'm happy with that and I'm sure Sofia will be more than a little excited to get her favourite food ever" she replied, mocking her daughters voice.

Arizona laughed. "She does love those spring rolls. Hopefully our nearest chinese shop here will be just as nice as the one we went to in Manhatten."

Meanwhile, upstairs, when Carlos had arrived on the top landing, he'd found Katie stood outside of what Sofia appeared to have claimed as her own room. Coming over to the little girl, he bent down onto one knee and smiled at her. "Have you picked your own room out yet?"

Katie shook her head before looking back in to the bedroom, watching on as Sofia opened one of the boxes on the floor.

"You've been sharing the same room with Sofia, haven't you?" Katie nodded at the older man. "Well, I'm sure Sofia would be more than willing to still share a room with you, but how about we go have a look at the other rooms and see if there's one around here you might like for yourself?" He held out his hand and after a few seconds, Katie slipped her little hand into his grasp. "So…" he started, getting to his feet. "Let's see what we have in this room. Oh…" he said, looking from the room to the little girl. "Well, what do you think of this room? You could sleep in the bath tub….or on the toilet…"

Katie laughed before shaking her head vigorously. "You cant sleep on the toilet."

Carlos raised an eyebrow. "I could tell you a story about Calliope from when she was 18 years old and decided it was a good idea to steal a bottle of my finest whiskey one night for her and her friends." He noticed the confusion on the little girls face. "Perhaps a story for when you're older…" he said. "So, that's a no to sleeping in the bathroom. OK, well lets go see if we can find another room, shall we?" Walking back towards Sofia's room, he opened the door opposite.

Katie's bed had already been placed in the room along with a few boxes but it was the life size teddy in the corner of the room that caught Katie's attention.

"Olaf" she said excitedly before dropping Carlos' hand and running into the room. The older man watched from the doorway as Katie wrapped her arms around the stuffed snowman from the little girls favourite movie.

Arriving at the top of the stairs, Arizona walked towards her father in law. She brought a hand up to squeeze his arm. "How's it going up here?" she asked before looking into the room. Her eyes went wide as she caught sight of the extremely large teddy. "Umm, where did that come from?"

"I had it sent, special delivery this morning. I heard he was Katie's favourite character and thought it might help persuade her into having her own room. I know she's been staying with Sofia at the apartment and I know it will be hard to break the attachment she's created with my grand daughter, but it would be good for her to try and have a little bit of independence. I realise it might take some perseverance, but eventually she will be comfortable being on her own."

Arizona was in 2 minds about what Carlos had done. On the one hand it was a lovely gesture and yes, it would be better if the girls weren't together constantly. However, Katie had been through so much in the last year of her life. It was understandable for her to want to be close to someone and perhaps pushing her to be alone wasn't the wisest suggestion.

"You're worrying it's too soon" Carlos said, observing the blonde who seemed lost in her thoughts. "I know she's been through some tough ordeals Arizona but it would be good for her to have her own room. She'll get used to it eventually and it can be introduced gradually. Fill the room with things she likes, things that are familiar so she feels secure enough to fall asleep here alone. Sofia is right across the hall" he said, looking in at his grand daughter. "So they're still very close."

"Yea, I know and I know you're right. She should be able to sleep alone, eventually I just don't want to rush her into anything just yet when so much has changed for her in the last few months."

"She seems to have settled into the family alot more from the first time I met her."

"Arizona, look, it's Olaf" Katie said, only just noticing the blonde at the door.

"Oh wow, isn't he just awesome? And so big..." she added, with a quick glance at her father in law as she walked into the room. "So I guess this is your room is it? Or maybe it should be my room because I also love Olaf…"

"Your room is with Callie…" the little girl stated matter of factly.

"That's true. I don't think there'd be enough room in here for Olaf, me and Callie. Maybe it would be better if a little girl had this room instead then. Hmm, who do you think could sleep in here, in this really comfortable bed?"

Katie held up her hand. "Me...me..." she said excitedly.

"Well then I guess that's settled then isn't it? This is Katie and Olaf's bedroom. How about you go look in that white box over there sweetie. I think maybe there might be a few things in there for you" Arizona said, having noticed the 2 boxes under the window that had Katie written on. She watched on as the young girl opened the flaps of the box and pulled out some teddy's, books and some dolls.

Smiling, Arizona left the room, walking across the hall and into Sofia's room. "Oh my gosh, look at this big girl room…"

Sofia ran up to her mum and hugged her. "This room is so cool. Katie can stay in here if she wants. I know she must be a bit scared still."

"That's very kind of you sweetie but I think maybe Katie is liking the idea of having her own room." They both looked across the hall and saw Carlos holding a doll up and making a woman's voice for one of them. Sofia laughed. "I'll tell her she can come in here when she wants, anytime she gets scared."

Arizona looked at her daughter with pride. "How did your mama and me get so lucky as to have an amazing daughter like you, huh?"

The little girl thought on for a few moments. "Maybe my daddy?"

Arizona smiled as Mark's face entered her mind. "Your daddy was an amazing man. He'd do anything for anyone. He was a real softy but he didn't like people knowing that." She pulled her daughter in for a hug. After a few moments, she pulled back. "How about you go get Katie and we'll go checkout that treehouse out back, huh?"

"Yes" Sofia squealed excitedly before jogging across the hall.

Later that night, once food had been eaten and the girls had been settled into their beds, Callie and Arizona made themselves comfortable on a couple of loungers out the back. The sky was dark so the light above the french doors had been switched on.

For the last couple of minutes, Arizona had been telling her wife about something Nicole had done the day before. They'd been talking to a woman in the centre and Nicole turned to leave. She hadn't realised the woman's husband had been stood behind them so when Nicole went to grasp the door knob, she ended up grabbing a different knob entirely.

Callie's head fell back as she laughed. "What did the guy do?"

"He was so embarrassed. Obviously thinking she was reaching for the door knob, Nicole had given a hard squeeze" she laughed. "His wife found it hilarious and ofcourse, Nicole being Nicole turned to the woman and said mazel tov with this stupid grin on her face."

Callie wiped a few stray tears from her eyes. "You know, call me crazy but I think she's somehow regained her sight and does all this stuff on purpose. The woman is hilarious."

"She does have a wicked sense of humour. I love working with her. It's like a laugh a minute."

The Latina looked over at her wife thoughtfully. "She's been really good to you, hasnt she?"

The blonde nodded. "She has. I mean, when we first met, you know what it was like. I kind of hated her, but then I got to know her...the real her, or at least she started showing snippets of the real her. I'll forever be grateful to Amelia for saving her life and I'm also grateful that Nicole came back for me when she got that grant. If she hadn't, all those months of me working myself into the ground learning fetal surgery would have all been in vein when I decided to come out here. Don't get me wrong, being a peds surgeon is rewarding but I just love being able to fix babies before they even come into the world, you know? It's just..."

"Awe inspiring..." Callie finished for her.

"Exactly. I love it so much and to have my own centre where I can work and teach is just, well...alongside being with you and Sofia..." she stopped and smiled "..and Katie" she added. "And now having this house, it's everything I've ever wanted."

Callie smiled as she watched her wife. "I love how passionate you are about your work. You're so driven and I really love that about you."

"Yea?"

Callie nodded. "Yea. Come here.." she said, leaning over in her seat, indicating for Arizona to meet her half way. Their lips met for a few moments before they pulled back. As she had another sip of her wine, the Latina looked out at their back garden. "You know how you said you feel like you have everything you ever wanted? I think you're wrong.."

"I am?"

"Mhmm. You always wanted chickens remember?" An angelic laugh left the blondes mouth, causing Callie to bite down on her bottom lip when her smile threaded to break her face.

"You're so right...and look…" she said, holding her hand out in front of her. "I think we have more than enough room out here to build a pen, don't you think?"

"Yea, I reckon so. Ofcourse, you realise we also promised Sofia that when we had a house, we'd get a dog too?"

"Oh god, we did" the blonde laughed, shaking her head slightly. "Man, it's just aswell we bought a big house with lots of land because our family just seems to be getting bigger by the day."

"Its nice though, isn't it? To finally feel settled. Once we get the house in order, we'll finally start living the life we always dreamed of."

Arizona nodded. "I can't believe there was once a time when I thought I'd never want to get married, let alone have kids. How things change, huh?"

"Well, let's be honest, it took a gun scare for you to finally say you'd have kids with me and then it was you being jealous about Mark that got you to propose to me."

Arizona laughed before holding up her hand, waggling her index finger at her wife. "Oh no no no, Calliope Torres. You just broke rule number 3 or 4 or 5...I've forgotten which one but we aren't allowed to bring up the past, remember?"

Callie rolled her eyes. "Only the parts of the past that will make us argue. These are happy times. Ugh, the kids and proposal parts, not the having a gun pointed at you or the Mark jealousy stuff" she quickly added when Arizona raised an eyebrow.

"Hmm, Ok. I'll allow it." An involuntary shiver crept up on the blonde, almost making her drink spill over her lap.

"Yea, it's starting to get a bit cooler now" Callie said, swinging her legs off the lounger. "Come on, let's head inside and see if dad's finished watching his show." Helping the blonde onto her feet, she left a quick kiss on her cheek before wrapping her arms around her shoulder and walking back into the house.
