Chapter 39.
=Normal POV=
[January 2; Midmorning]
[Hunter Isle; Grimborn Home]
The holidays had been great, and the Hogmanay celebration was just as fun as Snoggletog had been. Alas, Hiccup had dreaded today coming. The new year was here, and Gobber let Hiccup know after the Neerday festivities ended last night; he would have to return to Berk tomorrow. Hiccup didn't want Gobber to leave but understood he had to. It was for the best and Hiccup, despite not liking how his tribe rejected, abandoned, and betrayed him; knew it was wrong to leave them defenseless when there was a threat against the Archipelago presently involving Johann indefinitely, but there was no telling who else could be involved, hence why Hiccup had a hard time trusting anyone who didn't prove that they could be and earned his. Gobber stayed through to midmorning, which was about now as the weather had not been a great first thing when everyone woke. So Gobber stayed through for breakfast and to make sure everything was packed up, while also setting up some form of communication with the Grimborn brothers in case of emergencies with Hiccup.
Currently, Hiccup was actually napping; he admitted to not getting a lot the night before from the party, which left Gobber to talk to the brothers and that's what they were doing downstairs of the Grimborn home.
"This here is Sharpshot, it's Hiccup's Terror Mail dragon; he's had him just under a little less time than Toothless, but this dragon is always in my shop, so he knows me. If there are any issues with Hiccup that you can't handle; send me a message with Sharpshot. He'll likely reach me within five or six," Gobber informed as Sharpshot was getting to know Ryker and Viggo, who recalled how Hiccup showed them to interact with Terrible Terrors from that island while sailing around.
"From here, Berk is…Northeast, correct?" Viggo asked.
Gobber nodded. "Yes. In our line, from Berk to Dragon Hunter; there are some random islands, but also the Bog- Burglars, Hysterics, and Lava-Louts. I believe Lava-Lout is about four hours if I recall past chieftain meetings by dragon-back. Bog is an hour, and Hysteria is two and a half. So, it won't take long for a little guy like him, and he'll come right to me as long as you tell him to go to Gobber, not home. He'll go to Stoick if you do that," Gobber explained.
"Noted," Ryker stated. None of them wanted Stoick or anyone else but Gobber from Berk to know there were communications between hunters and Gobber regarding Hiccup. "And for caring for him, keep doing what we're doing?" He wondered.
"If you have his trust and friendship, you might have a chance at actually comforting him, physically. I used to with soothing words, reminding him that he isn't what anyone believed, that he is loved and wanted by some if not all. Do you know what I mean? That accompanied by light shoulder touches, patting the shoulders, even hugging him. Sometimes that's all he needs. Just a hug or shoulder to cry on. I was the only one to do it until Toothless, or Astrid and his father," Gobber said.
"But now it's just you, Toothless, and us. Maybe others in the tribe if he gets closer to them?" Viggo questioned.
"That's right," Gobber replied. "But if it starts looking like he's not getting better, or taking any comfort and help…Send for me. I don't want to see him slip too far again…" Gobber sighed.
"Again?" Viggo asked.
"It was after the first time, nobody knows but me and maybe Astrid…After the Hooligans abandoned him for the dragon befriending thing; he was really low, and if Astrid hadn't gone to talk to him; he was ready to jump off the cliff and kill himself…Be dead before any of us came back from the nest trip," Gobber revealed. "He admitted that to me after he woke up from the fight with Red Death, how low he felt, how ready he was to end it when he'd lost everything…"
"But he never lost you," Ryker mentioned.
"I went with Stoick to the nest, to try and talk him out of it; I should have stayed back with Hiccup…So he felt like it was all gone, and I know he's not alone…But he knew that before too and as you told me, was still ready to just die after his capture," Gobber stared at them. "Just keep an eye on him…I don't know what I'd do if I lost him; he's like a son to me,"
"We understand, and you have our word that we'll keep him safe, even from himself," Ryker vowed.
"And you are welcome here any time, no prior word or invitation needed. Families are always allowed here to see those who have left their homes. Hiccup is family to you, so you come whenever you like to see him," Viggo reminded.
"I appreciate that," Gobber nodded. "Hiccup and I will have contact too, but if you see that he's starting to shut down, send a message with Sharpshot." He added.
"Understood," Viggo assured.
"Great. Now, where is that boy…I should be leaving for Berk. See if those ungrateful people opened their eyes yet," Gobber chuckled.
"Will Hiccup forgive them?" Ryker inquired as the brothers rose to their feet after Gobber stood up and got his bag from beside him.
"Perhaps one day; he always ends up forgiving. Unfortunately, I cannot say for sure regarding Berk, given this is the second time they've hurt and abandoned him," Gobber shrugged. "Only time will tell, and I assume the Hooligans will have to not only prove they're sorry but also regain his trust, and even then; it would never be the same again," He explained.
"Of course. Once something is broken, it may be mended, but will never be what it was and the marks will always be there," Conceded Viggo with his hands behind his back.
"I believe the lad is still up in his room sleeping off the festivities of last night," Ryker laughed a bit.
"Well, let's go see him. I can't leave without saying goodbye," Gobber chuckled. "He'd come after me on Toothless just for the hug," He added. The brothers nodded, smiling before all three headed up behind Gobber's lead to get to Hiccup's borrowed space in the loft/attic. Getting to the door, Gobber knocked lightly. "Laddie? You awake yet?" There was no sound at first, then Toothless crooning softly. "I wanted to see ya before I leave," He mentioned calmly. Toothless warbled again, then it sounded like Hiccup groaning a bit from being woken up by Toothless. Just as Gobber was going to knock again, he heard Hiccup whimpering. "Lad?" No answer, but Hiccup started coughing hard. "Hiccup?" Gobber said louder.
"Gobber?" Hiccup managed to get out, sounding weak though.
"Are ya alright, Hiccup?" Ryker decided to ask. Hiccup coughed again, harder, and groaned.
"I think maybe I had too much to drink last night…" Hiccup moaned. The three males looked at one another; Hiccup didn't have that much to drink, he wasn't drunk at all.
"Can I come in, lad?" Gobber asked.
"Y-Yeah…" Hiccup said. "Viggo and Ryker can too," He added a moment later. Gobber opened the door and headed in, then Viggo and Ryker behind him. Hiccup was laying in bed, a blanket pulled up, as he was on his side and shivering a bit. Hunter Isle was fairly warm weather, but still cold like the rest of the Archipelago too. Gobber ended up chuckling a little and moved closer to Hiccup. "What is so amusing to you?" He mumbled.
"You're not recovering from a night of drinking, laddie…" Gobber set his hand on Hiccup's forehead. "You're sick, and that's a slight fever,"
Hiccup muttered a bit. "How did I know you'd see through that?"
"Because I raised you, kiddo. And yes, I know you're almost twenty, but you're still my little laddie. So even if you get married and have kids of your own one day; I'll still call you a kid," Gobber laughed a little. Hiccup rolled his eyes as Gobber carefully ruffled his hair. "Let's see…I might not be as good as Gothi, but…Tired, stuffy, coughing…That's definitely a cold, laddie."
"I'm sure Olga can whip something up for a cold," Viggo informed. "Come, Ryker. We'll grab what we need from Olga and bring it to Hiccup here, so he doesn't have to move and be uncomfortable," Ryker nodded and the two brothers left.
"Why didn't you say anything this morning, lad?" Gobber asked, pulling over Hiccup's desk chair and sitting beside his bed.
"I didn't feel like this when I woke up, just a headache and tired. I figured it was from the late-night because I didn't have a lot to drink. I started feeling this after you woke me," Hiccup admitted.
"Yeah, well don't be stubborn if you get sick while you're here, Hiccup. The brothers, their families, and other members of the tribe can't read you like I can and you know you can't handle all your sicknesses on your own," Gobber reminded.
Hiccup nodded softly. "I know, and I won't. But I can do colds on my own, and like I said…I didn't feel this until you woke me up, well…You woke Toothless and then he got me up. I didn't answer right away because I was trying to figure out how I felt,"
"I get it, laddie. But I know you're stubborn, that's why I'm reminding you not to hide it from the others here," Gobber smiled gently.
"Is the weather better?" Hiccup asked sadly, knowing it meant Gobber would be leaving.
"It's cleared up, and once I know you're good to get up and give me a proper goodbye; I'll head out with Grump," Gobber stated.
"So you'll be leaving once I get this medicine?" Hiccup closed his eyes.
"I told you I couldn't stay forever, son. If we've got Johann and any of these others who work for him, or he works for slinking around; Berk needs their Blacksmith," Gobber informed. "Now, maybe sometime in the future I can have trained someone else to take over, but for now; they need me." He added.
"I understand…" Hiccup nodded at him. "Will you still visit? Or come if I need you?"
"Of course, laddie," Gobber concurred gently. "Yes, absolutely. I'll come to see you as much as I can without drawing attention to your father or the tribe. I did tell them I was going to look for you, but when I go back today; I'm going to say I never found where you were. So my trips will have to be random and much shorter than this one. But we can still talk; I've left Sharpshot here and the Grimborn brothers know of him too. We can write letters, and any time you need me, son; you let me know and I'll come right out to you, regardless of all them. I'll tell them right off that you asked for me and that they can't come," Gobber explained.
"Okay," Hiccup replied softly, then turned his head and coughed a few times. "Do they really miss me?"
"Hm?" Gobber blinked.
"When Johann found me with the hunters before I blew his cover to Viggo and Ryker, plus the crew; Johann was spouting off that the tribe missed me, and wanted me back there…" Hiccup paused, almost nervously. "Was he telling the truth, or is it still the same?"
"After we realized you left; everyone was worried and search parties were sent to find you, but after a few months of there being nothing; your father called it off…Thinking you might have died on your own or thought you were angry and plotting revenge. When Johann came to us with news on you, saying you were captured; Stoick sent the riders out with help from Dagur and Heather. When they returned that you took their dragons, and used your powers against them, which I know was defense, so calm down," Gobber paused when he saw Hiccup about to claim why he used his abilities. Hiccup relaxed. "Your father was pretty heated about what Astrid and the others told him regarding finding you with the hunters. Now, I know a lot of it was a lie, spouting you're a traitor and what not. Heather, Dagur, and Fishlegs told me the truth of the encounter and that's why I decided to come to find you,"
"So they stopped caring, decided to care, now it's back to I'm just a traitor?" Hiccup arched a brow.
"No, now it's more heeding the warning and I made them realize that none of this would have happened if they had decided not to be muttonheads about your powers after all you've done for the tribe. You said not to come to find you in revenge to get their dragons back, or you'd take all the dragons away. Me, though; I know you won't hurt me and I didn't come in revenge for you befriending hunters. I just came because I love ya and wanted to make sure you were okay," Gobber smiled. "I believe they feel ashamed and bad about what happened, but I know that's not enough for you to forgive them and come home."
Hiccup looked down some. "Is that wrong of me?"
"Not at all, son," Gobber replied. "They hurt you, twice in your life for no reason. I understand being shocked and perhaps a little scared about something they don't understand. But acting and saying the things they did wasn't how to handle this, and they have to live with the repercussions of what they did. I don't blame you for leaving, or being hurt. I don't blame you if you don't even forgive them, or want to live there again," He continued.
"I might forgive them one day if they can prove they're sorry, and earn my trust back, and prove they won't break it a third time…" He muttered. "They blew their second chance and I shouldn't even suggest a third if they meet the requirements to get one…But because of who they are…" Hiccup paused. Gobber nodded.
"I get it, lad. You don't have to explain it to me," Gobber said in a light, understanding tone. "But you won't come back, will you?"
"No…I won't do that again. I don't even know if I can call them my tribe again, Gobber," Hiccup sighed. "I know that's where I was born, and that I was born into royalty as Stoick's only heir…But how can I be chief to people who did this to me twice? I wouldn't even be eligible for chief because no one would want to marry me or have kids with me in fear of the kids gaining powers. And I'm sure my father hates my decision to befriend hunters, as do the rest of them…So it's kind of pointless to return as the heir, much less live there at all," He informed. Hiccup took a breath as Viggo and Ryker returned, knocking once to let the males know they were there. "You guys can come in," The two did and approached Hiccup with a cup of tea.
"Olga said this would help with symptom relief. And we have more to get through the next few days. Olga advised drinking it three times a day," Viggo informed.
"Thank you," Hiccup accepted the cup from Viggo, and took a few sips. "Tea?"
"Olga informed the heat would help your throat from coughing," Ryker mentioned as Hiccup continued to sip, and thinking.
"Hiccup, you didn't have to explain it to me why you don't want to call the Hooligans your tribe, or live there anymore. I get it, believe me. I'm only staying for the sake of helping with the impending battle," Gobber told Hiccup.
"But when that's over, will you leave?" Hiccup questioned.
"Likely, but for now; they can't afford to have a trainee handling their weaponry," Gobber stated. "We'll be in contact, lad, and I will come any time you ask for me. I promise. You won't lose me, Hiccup. I swear that to you, son,"
"What will Stoick do about an heir?" Viggo decided to ask.
"I'm not sure," Gobber replied. "Hiccup is his only child, but-,"
"Not the only member of the family with one. Spitelout is still his brother, or half, at least. And he has Snotlout." Hiccup reminded. "And in an emergency situation; such things could be overlooked such as illegitimacy. They still share the same blood, they are technically Haddock family members."
"I don't think your dad wants to do that," Gobber sighed.
"Well, he doesn't have much choice…" Hiccup mumbled after another sip from the cup. "I won't come back, and even if he refuses to retire until his death…At some point, another family will take over. And I'm sure it's in the records room that Spitelout is not only second in command to the chief, but also family, so it will go to him or any family under him."
"How'd you know that?" Gobber asked.
"I've learned a lot from you when you're drunk, and these two about laws and traditions in all tribes. Some have individual ones, but all tribes share the laws and traditions of a Viking tribe," Hiccup chuckled a little.
"Huh…" Gobber blinked. "How are you feeling?" He wondered when Hiccup finished his drink and set the cup aside.
"Give it a little time to work, but while that happens…I want you to take some things back to Berk with you for me," Hiccup said.
"Such as?" Gobber inquired.
Hiccup didn't say anything, but he got himself out of the bed and moved to his desk, writing a letter and then another. Hiccup rolled both up and marked them before he walked back to Gobber and handed him the parchments. "One for the riders, another for my father. I'm sending you back with Barf, Belch, Hookfang, and Stormfly. It's been long enough, and I believe they'll behave and not come after me if I return their dragons to them. If the tribe asks why you have them when you claim not to have found me; tell them you ran into the dragons while flying back and that the dragons gave them to you and you saw they were for specified people," Hiccup explained.
"I got it, laddie." Gobber nodded to confirm the request. Hiccup went out on the back deck area, giving a loud whistle.
"Come on…The dragons will meet us outside," Hiccup stated, pulling on his boots. Toothless went out through the deck, and Hiccup followed, then the other three too.
. . .
[Town Center]
After a short walk, Viggo, Ryker, Gobber, Hiccup, and Toothless reached the area Gobber would leave from. As Hiccup said, the dragons had come and met them in the spot. "I suppose this is goodbye for now,"
"Yeah…" Hiccup nodded softly.
Gobber grabbed Hiccup's arm and hugged him tightly. Hiccup gave in, hugging back. "I love you, lad,"
"I love you too, Gobber," Hiccup replied, not wanting to cry.
"I'll always be here for you, and I will come when you need me, son." Gobber reminded.
"I believe you, Dad," Hiccup said. After a few more moments, the two split apart and Gobber got on Grump. Hiccup looked at the four dragons who came to nuzzle him. "Time for you four to go home. Be safe, take care of each other and I'm sure we'll see one another again soon." Hiccup told them. The four purred before Hiccup stepped back and motioned his arm out. "Home," The dragons took to the sky, then Grump with Gobber. "Take care!"
"You too, laddie," Gobber saluted before all the dragons, and Gobber headed Northeast towards Berk. Hiccup sighed softly watching them get farther away.
"Would you like to get back to the house to rest more?" Ryker asked.
Hiccup nodded. "Yeah, give the medicine some time to kick in and I'll end up asleep again," Hiccup started walking with them. Toothless too. Not long after, they reach the house, and Hiccup returned to his room and laid down. Not long from that, maybe half an hour; he was fast asleep again.
