Chapter 58
"Wonderful welcoming Ms. Evans. Now if could please take your seat." Slughorn said with a smile. Lily could do no wrong in his eyes. She was the potion's master's absolute favorite.
"I will sit by Severus. Remus is sick." She said and made herself at home next to him.
Severus shook his head and started to brew by her. It was like old times. They worked in tandem. Lily and him were potion partners until fifth year. They were in tune with one another. It shouldn't have worked but it did. They worked silently as they often did.
"We have to talk, come meet me, room of requirement after class. I know all of it Sev. Hermione told me. I know all of it." She said when they finished brewing. Lily said and still wore a smile.
He saw Potter give him a death glare. Severus did not have time for him. He looked to Hermione and she looked anxious. He would not go to any more classes until they spoke.
He shook Lestrange away. "I know how to get there." They were to go to History of Magic.
He caught Hermione. "We need to talk." He whispered and grabbed her hand.
"I thought I told you to leave her be." Black aimed his wand at him. Severus grabbed his and disarmed him as an afterthought. He didn't have time for the mutt.
Hermione grabbed his hand, "Sev, we have to leave now." She said and they left a red faced Sirius Black.
She took him to an empty classroom and warded the door. "She knows."
"What do you mean she knows?" Severus asked her carefully.
Hermione grabbed his hand and soothed him, "Lily was waiting for me yesterday night. Sev, there was only supposed to be two girls in that dorm. Lily sat on her bed. She lit her wand. I got scared and then I was terrified." Hermione said quickly.
She was tired and exasperated, "Look inside my mind. It will be easier if you do."
Severus did. Hermione came from the restroom and found Lily surrounded by candles.
"You came with Sev." She said.
Hermione paled, "you frightened me. My name is Hermione Granger." Hermione offered her hand.
"Lily Evans." Lily shook it and then ambushed her with questions. "Sev was sorted into Slytherin wasn't he?"
Hermione nodded shakily, "how do you know Severus?" Severus could feel the anxiety pouring off of her.
Lily smiled, "I've known Sev since I was nine. He told me all about magic. I knew I wasn't loony. I knew he existed." Lily stood up and hugged Lily. The redhead pushed back, "I know it is strange but I know him. Hermione, you know I do. You and professor McGonagall know who him too. I can feel his magic around you." She said with a smirk.
"Lily, I don't know what you are talking about." Hermione continued trying to concentrate on keeping her voice leveled.
"My parents thought that it was because of my magic. They think I may be a seer. Tuney thinks I'm a freak and the healers thought it was a spell gone wrong but I knew it had to be true. They told us you two were coming. The headmaster told us yesterday morning. I overheard Black when he talked to Potter. He said his name. Severus Snape and it made sense. It was him, it was Sev. It all came back clearly." She said almost crying.
"He's my best friend. We grew up together. His mum is a witch; her name is Eileen. His dad's a muggle, Tobias Snape. He worked in the closed mill. Severus told me all about Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Azkaban, dementors, dragons, goblins, house elves. He loves treacle tart. He loves music, he loves Led Zeppelin and he likes to take care of birds. I know that he has a temper. He was sorted in Slytherin and some of the boys are not nice. He tries to fit in but he's not mean. Severus is good and he's my best friend. Hermione please." Lily explained while clutching her hands.
"Lily, I think you need to sleep." She tried to go back to her bed.
"I know about You Know Who. Lord Voldemort." She whispered softly.
Hermione's eyes rounded. "How?"
"I was terrified at first. I've never told anyone. I know he does not exist; I know that because I've looked all over for something but I remember talking about him. Sev told me about him too. He's not real. I was very scared but I was terrified when Severus was not here at Hogwarts." Lily blinked.
"You must never speak of him." Hermione warned her. Severus could now feel Hermione's forceful need to protect Tom.
"I would never. I swear." The other said openly. "No one would ever truly believe me. Magical or not."
Hermione paced in front of her, "how do you know all of these things?"
"Sometimes it's flashes and sometimes, it's full blown memories, I know they've happened. I am not loony." Lily defended herself once more.
"We have to wait for Severus. I have no idea what is happening." Hermione was bewildered as was the other girl. It was no use telling her that she was incorrect.
Lily frowned and begged Hermione once more, "you know very well that Sev will try to keep me in the dark. Please, you have to tell me. If we wait, you and him will find a way to create a story. You have to explain. He will try to hide all of this."
Hermione took a breath, "I can't."
Lily frowned, "Hermione please, you have to. Please, I cannot go on like this. I deserve to know." Severus would have broken the moment Lily's anguished green eyes set on him. He owed her that much.
Hermione broke, "You must swear to never tell anyone."
"I will take the unbreakable vow." She said.
"Tomorrow." Hermione said as an afterthought. She explained the time travel, the need to stop Voldemort. It was the same redacted truth that Minerva and Tom knew.
Lily gasped and listened. "Why do I remember him? No one else does." She questioned.
"I do not know. Lily you must never tell." Hermione repeated once more.
Lily then hugged her, "never."
Severus broke eye contact, "why is this happening?"
Hermione shook her head, "I had to tell her."
Severus sat down, "Hermione, what are we going to do?"
"We meet her. We help her, Sev, why does she remember you?" Hermione asked out loud.
"I don't know." Severus grabbed her hand. "We have to go." They ran out of the classroom and reached the 7th floor in no time. Hermione walked in front of the wall and the door appeared.
Lily sat on a couch surrounded by drawings. She flew at him and hugged him tight. "I'm sorry Sev. I was hurt, so hurt and I meant to owl you time and time again. I wanted you to be Harry's godfather." She sobbed into his neck. Severus paled and stiffened.
He pushed her back a little. She was crying in earnest now, "Lils, I need you to breathe for me. Can you do that?" The girl nodded and stopped crying. Severus led her to the couch once more.
"Lils, what do you remember?" Severus asked her. Lily looked at Hermione. "I did not remember all of it. Yesterday, when we spoke. I had not realized all of it. I understood when I came to this room. The pictures in my notepads just became clear.
Severus could tell she would go into hysterics once more. "Lily, we have to trust each other."
"Oh Sev. I remember that night. He wanted to kill Harry. James died and I knew he was gone. He came for Harry. Sev, Harry, my Harry. He's Voldemort. Tom Riddle, Tom Snape. We have to do something. We have to tell the Headmaster." She sobbed and attempted to leave the room.
Severus stood up and held her, "Pixie, you have to listen to me." Severus said, it came out of the darkest and oldest recesses of his mind. That nickname, just hers. Severus called her that when they were children. He used to tell her that she was like faery because she flew. Lily could fly. In his 9-year-old mind she was a faery, a pixie.
Lily took a deep breath and relaxed. "Why don't you explain everything? Tell us all that you remember. We will explain all we know too." Severus said.
Lily nodded and rubbed her eyes, "I've always had these memories of you. I thought I was loony but you were there, all the time and I didn't understand. I still don't. I told her that. I saw you in the dungeons and I knew. I knew we were best friends. You and I, we have known each other for years Sev. Some of the memories were hazy but after I saw you I remembered all. Remember when we went to the zoo?"
Severus laughed when she laughed, "yes I remember. We fed the monkeys." Lily smiled and grabbed his hands. "I also remembered the bad things more clearly. I came up to the room of requirement. I left my drawings here and then I saw more drawings. I don't remember these but I remember living through them. It was all clear. I remember You Know Who, the war. I remembered the green light and I remember thinking that last second before he killed me that I wanted to protect Harry, make it all go away, go back, back when I felt safe."
"Severus, we have to tell people. We have to tell people about Lord Voldemort. He is dangerous." Lily began agitated.
Hermione grabbed her wand and pointed at her. "You will not." Severus looked at the scene and understood that Hermione would obliviate Lily. She would do it without a care if it meant that Tom would not be harmed. Lily raised her wand as well.
"Hermione, please lower your wand. We have to explain. This is all so very new to her." Severus found himself mediating between the two girls.
"Lils, we came from the future to stop him. He is not Lord Voldemort; the monster does not exist. Hermione and I we changed all of it. We raised him, he's our son. He's good. You have seen what he does. You know who he is. He is good, he's helping people like us."
Lily stood up and paced. "He killed hundreds of people. He killed my Harry."
Hermione shook her head, "he did not. He will never hurt anyone, not intentionally. We made an unbreakable vow. Lily, he did not kill Harry. He grew up with your sister. Harry was my best friend."
Lily sat back down. "I don't understand. Sev, why didn't you kill him."
Severus looked at her once more, "I couldn't. He was a child; I saw myself in him. I saw a bullied child. Hermione and I, we did our best to raise him well and we did. He's a decent person. He cares for people like us. Muggle born classes for parents, those were his laws, his ideas. Our Tom is good. Lily, please you have to understand."
She looked into his eyes, "help me Sev. Help me understand all of it."
"Your son was brave Lils. He was so very brave. He was the chosen one. He tried to kill Voldemort and sacrificed his life. Hermione and I had no other choice but to go back in time and finish the job. We were stranded. We raised Tom as our own." Severus began. He told her about their years here. His work as a spy, their travel and the fact that they could not age.
"My Harry, my poor baby." Lily cried for her teenage son. Severus held her as she cried. He could not see her cry.
"Why do you look like this again?" Lily asked him in hushed tones.
"Severus and I altered our appearance to come and see Tom. We cannot go back." Hermione said carefully.
"So you came back to school. Sev, why didn't you come back for me sooner?" Lily asked him, the hurt in her voice was unmistakable.
Severus decided to never lie to her again, "I couldn't see you. Minerva told us about your memories and I was afraid I would hurt you once again."
Lily frowned, "you could never hurt me. You're my best friend. You are good Sev and you are so very brave."
Severus looked away, "Lily, I became a Death Eater." He had to tell her. Lily would then leave like so many years ago.
She grabbed his face, "Dumbledore told me it was you. He said that it was a double agent. I knew it could only be you. He would have killed us had you not alerted us. You gave us time Sev."
Severus shook his head and removed her hands from his face, "Lils, it was me. I told him about the prophecy." He remembered the anxiety, the abject fear and then seeing her lying dead.
"I came by your home after it was all done. I thought it was Black. I saw Potter dead, Harry cried and cried and I held you and you were gone. Lily, I'm so sorry." He sobbed in front her. He broke, all those years thinking, regretting his actions. He would have given his life to make sure that she lived.
Lily cried too and hugged him, "I know, I know all of it. I forgave you a long time ago Sev. I wrote you letters that I never sent. I knew you were the spy. Sev. I'm sorry. I should have never ignored you so cruelly. I should have tried to talk to you. I'm sorry." She sobbed.
Severus' shoulders shook, "I was wrong. I thought I would keep you safe. I knew they all hated your kind and I thought I could keep you. I was selfish. I thought myself better. Lily, it all went to hell. I was jealous of Potter. He took you away and I didn't see. I wanted to be powerful. I wanted to make them all hurt." He sobbed once more.
Lily cried more and continued to hug him tightly. They hugged for a long time until Hermione cleared her throat.
"You have to take an unbreakable vow." Hermione said clearly. "You cannot tell Tom any of this. He does not know. You cannot tell anyone about you or us."
Severus stood up and stretched his hand. Lily took it. "Do you swear to never tell anyone about the other timeline?"
Lily spoke clearly, "I do."
"Do you swear to not harm or have someone else harm Tom?" Hermione asked.
"I swear." She said, the silvery lines bound them. Lily rubbed her eyes and then looked at Hermione, "you have to tell me about him. How was my Harry?"
Hermione smiled, "he was very kind and smart. He was also very funny and brave. He could be moody." She said and left out the part where Severus hated him. Lily did not need to know much about the future timeline.
"Have you tried to go back?" Lily asked carefully.
Severus shook his head, "no, our time-turner exploded. We researched some when we couldn't age or change back. There is no more research, there are no time-turners left."
Lily nodded, "what do we do?"
Hermione paced in front of them, "we keep on going."
Lily nodded, "oh James is still a toe rag."
Severus laughed. "You must promise to not antagonize him." She begged him. "He's a good man. He will be a good man. Oh please Severus, I would love it if we could all be friends."
He frowned, "I will behave if he behaves but we will not be friends."
Lily smiled, "that's all I need."
Hermione looked tired, "we may have a problem with the marauders. You were too familiar with him today. No one is going to believe you two do not know each other."
Severus nodded, "we know each other from before I moved to the colonies. I said I relocated when I was 11. It fits perfectly."
"Professor McGonagall, what will we do about her?" Lily asked.
"Nothing, she knows you have memories of Sev. All we have to say is that you remember him and that you two are friendly. You cannot be so familiar with him." Hermione said noticing that Lily always touched him.
Lily smiled, "I'm just so happy to have you back. It's been so lonely Sev. Mary is a nice girl but she can be so dull and Alice is too grown up, always writing to Frank. You must tell me how they fared. No, don't tell me. I don't want to know. I think is best if I don't know much about that other time." Lily rambled and guided him out the door.
"Do you remember our tree? Oh it's so strange. I remember everything and yet it all seems so long ago?" Lily said as they walked out the of the room of requirement. Severus felt very happy. He had his friend back. He touched her arm, "it all feels strange, as if in a dream." Lily continued to speak. He had forgotten how chatty she was. Hermione looked confused. Severus kissed her hand. Lily continued talking on the other side of him. He smiled at Lily and hugged her to him. Lily was his friend once again.
