"Emma! Over Here!" Laura called to Emma, who had been searching for her friends in the crowd. Laura was joined by Samantha, Raini, Calum and Noah. Emma squeezed her way through the crowd and joined the group. "We were wondering where you went!" Laura told the girl. "Hey, what are you smiling about?" Emma figured she may as well tell the girls that she had just discovered that Ross wasn't going to date Brittany. And then she added the bit of news that was the real reason for her to be smiling. "Wait! On the cheek?!" Raini asked excitedly. Laura was also beginning to freak out. "You guys are so cute together!" Laura told Emma. Emma smiled. "Thank you." she said with a laugh as R5 took the stage. The room immediately roared with applause as the five prepared themselves to perform. Riker was the first to approach the microphone. "How's everybody doing tonight?" Riker asked the crowd, who screamed in response. Emma loved the excitement, and joined right in with the cheering and applause. "Okay, we're gonna start with one of our favorites." Riker told the crowd before beginning to strum the chords of his guitar to the tune of "Say You'll Stay." Riker began singing, like he usually did for the song, then Ross and the rest of R5 joined in for the chorus. Emma thought Ross sounded amazing. His voice was just as flawless as usual.
The band continued to sing several songs, and spoke to the crowd and amongst each other in between each song. Emma recognized each song that R5 performed. Then Ross announced that the group would singing a cover of a song. "So, we've only been working on this cover for a few days," Ross told the crowd honestly. "and it may not be perfect. But I really wanted to sing it tonight because this is a really special night for me." Emma was completely surprised when Ross looked right at her. Then he added, "There's a friend of mine that's here tonight, and I want to dedicate this song to her." Emma got a huge smile on her face, and Ross smiled back at her. "I think she knows who she is." Then the five began playing a song that Emma had discovered not long before, and she had loved the song since the first time she heard it. The song began with some soft singing, which was performed by Rydel and Rocky. Before Riker began to sing the lyrics, Ross said, "This is called Ever After. It's by Marianas Trench." Then Riker started to sing.
"Once upon a time
I used to romanticize
Used to be somebody, never mind
Don't miss it that much now
I think it's sinking in
Days that I wonder where I've been
In picture perfect porcelain
But I won't lose a pound."
Rocky, Riker and Ross then began to harmonize a few lines of the song.
"You say I would make a better liar
And never face the music when it's dire
And I breathe disaster, ever after
Don't pull away from me now."
That's when Emma almost forgot to breathe. Ross began singing alone. He sounded perfect.
"Don't you move
Can't you stay where you are, just for now
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after
You could be my ever after, after all
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after."
The song's beat got a little faster, and Ross continued to sing alone. Rocky and Rydel sang softly a few lines later.
"Apologies, I'm not myself but I can guarantee
That when I get back, you won't believe
That you knew me well
Don't want to think about it
I'm just so tired of getting sick about it
Now stand back up and be a man about it
And fight for something, fight for something, fight for something."
The three boys once again sang together.
"I would make a better liar
And never face the music when it's dire
And I breathe disaster, ever after
Don't pull away from me now."
There became much more electric guitar. Ross sang a few lines again, with the rest of the group joining in as well.
"Don't you move
Can't you stay where you are, just for now
I could be your perfect disaster
You could my ever after
Now you could be my ever after, after all
I could be your perfect disaster
You could be my ever after.
Nobody told ya this is gonna fold ya
We go marching in like toy soldiers
To have and hold ya over sold ya
They're marching like toy soldiers."
Ross took over once again. The beat of the song slowed quite a bit.
"Somehow don't you dare fail, fail me now, ever after
Somehow don't you dare fail, fail me now, ever after
Somehow."
Riker took over and sang alone again.
"Once upon a time
This place was beautiful and mine
But now it's just a bottom line
Barely comes to mind
But ever after was mine."
As the song reached it's end, Ross sang the final lines.
"I'll be your disaster, ever after
So fire away
Goodbye."
"Are you crying, Emma?" Laura asked Emma as the crowd cheered. Emma looked at Laura. As Laura had suspected, a few tears had made their way down Emma's cheeks. "What? Oh. Don't worry. It's happy tears, I promise." Emma told the girl, trying to smile. Emma knew she was not entirely telling the truth to Laura, but part of her was happy. Happy that she had found someone who would sing a song in front of hundreds of people and dedicate it to her. Happy that someone wasn't embarrassed to admit that they had feelings for her. Happy that someone was falling for her. And happy that she was falling for him, too. The only thing that was making her sad? The two of them had less than twelve hours of being happy together before Emma would be returning to her home halfway across the country.
Emma saw Ross look at her. She knew he wouldn't be able to see the tears coming down her face in the dark room. He gave her a thumbs up, which Emma returned. Ross smiled, and Emma smiled back. When Ross looked away and Riker announced that the group was about to begin their final song of the night, Emma turned to her friends. "I'll be right back, guys." Emma told the group. Before anyone could stop her, Emma headed to the bathroom. She just needed a minute to cool off. Fortunately, when Emma looked in the mirror at her reflection, her make-up wasn't messed up from the few tears that had made their way down her face. She quickly dried her face gently with a paper towel, then took a breath. 'I just... can't believe that just happened.' Emma thought. She started to laugh. 'It's like a fantasy! It's like a dream. And yet, it's reality.' Emma thought with a smile. Emma didn't want anyone to worry about her, and she exited the bathroom as R5 finished performing one of their songs that was on the Austin and Ally CD, "Crazy 4 U." The crowd cheered as the band bowed and left the stage. Emma spotted Laura, Raini, Samantha, Calum and Noah head for the stage, and she assumed they were going to congratulate the band. Emma took a deep breath and walked in the same direction.
Ross gave Laura and Raini a hug. Samantha, who had hugged Ross at least twice that week that Emma could recall, gave him a high-five and told him a simple, "Good job." Emma expected Samantha was just saving the hug for Rocky, but instead of giving Rocky a hug, she reached her arms around his neck and kissed him in front of everyone. Emma couldn't help but laugh at Samantha's lack of humility, but thought the two made a pretty cute couple at the same time. 'I guess she was ready to kiss Rocky,' Emma thought, recalling an early conversation she had had with Samantha about how she didn't kiss the night before when they were on their date. 'Perhaps the whole rock-star-thing is a turn on.' Emma declared in her mind before Ross came up to her. "Hey, you." Emma said with a smile, and Ross smiled back. He picked her up in his arms and gave her a huge hug. Emma laughed as Ross spun her around. "You were amazing." Emma told Ross when he put her back down. "Thank you." Ross said humbly, though Emma was pretty sure Ross knew how talented he was. Emma gave Rydel a hug next, then decided she should tell the remaining three boys a "good job" as well. To her surprise, however, when she came up to Riker, he gave her a hug. "I think I owe you an apology." Riker told Emma. "Do you?" Emma asked. Riker nodded. "I'll admit, I was a little pissed when Ross told me he went to a party and then spent the night with you." 'Again,' Emma thought. 'Making that sound dirtier than it actually was.' Riker continued, "But I didn't realize until now just how important you are to my brother. I mean, I'm pretty sure he would jump off of a bridge if you asked him to. Don't do that, by the way." Emma laughed at Riker's comment. "Never." she told him. Riker smiled at her. "I'm sorry if I ever made you feel unwelcome. You're going to come back to Cali and visit our family a lot, right?" Emma smiled as she said, "I'll try to." With that, Emma approached Rocky to tell him a "well done." Rocky also gave Emma a hug and, of course, couldn't help but ask, "Hey, Ross, am I allowed to tell your date she looks really cute or is that your job?" Emma laughed and told Rocky, "Thank you." When Emma turned to tell Ratliff how great he was on the drums and give him a high-five, she could overhear Rocky tell Ross, "Did I say cute? I meant hot." Emma was sure Rocky was getting on Ross's nerves, but she couldn't help but smile. No one had ever said she looked "hot" before. "Eyes on your own date, dude." Ross told Rocky, who did in fact return to Samantha and put his arms around her waist. "So those two should probably go get a room." Emma told Ross. "Probably." Ross said with a laugh. "Hey, you wanna dance?" Ross then asked Emma. The DJ had returned to playing music, and the current song happened to be slower. Emma recognized the song as "Everything Has Changed" by Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran. "I don't know how to dance." Emma admitted to Ross. "Hey, that makes two of us." Ross told Emma before holding out his hand. Emma laughed and took his hand, and the two walked onto the dance floor.
"So if what I've seen in the movies is correct..." Ross joked. "I should put my hands here." He said, gently putting his hands on Emma's waist. "And you should put your hands... um..." Ross started, but Emma finished the sentence for him. "Right here, right?" Emma reached up and put her arms around Ross's neck. Her face was closer to his, and the two looked into each other's eyes. "Uh, yeah. I guess you could do that." Ross told her, and Emma laughed. Ross smiled at Emma. "Hey, I don't think I asked you yet, but my mom wanted everyone from Austin and Ally and R5 to come over to our house after the party tonight. So, you know, I guess you could come, too." Ross joked. Emma smiled. "Yeah? Okay, sounds fun." Emma told Ross. If it meant spending more time with Ross, it sounded good to Emma. "You can drive with me over there. If I would have to guess, Samantha will probably want to ride with Rocky over there." Emma told Ross, who agreed and added, "Let's just hope they actually come back to my house instead of making out in Rocky's car all night." Emma nodded. "But what if they come inside your house and make out in front of all of us all night?" The two looked at each other and started laughing at their ridiculous conversation. Emma was still chuckling when she laid her head against Ross's chest. She felt Ross's chin on the top of her head. Emma felt comfortable. She felt safe. And she felt happy. Really happy.
