Thank you for the reviews.
So the two idiots are now engaged. I mean, it is a weight off my chest you guys knowing about it (the ring that I chose is up on my twitter if you want to see it).
Now the moment that I made it so that Rachel was going to propose to Eddie, I knew I had to do something like this. Because someone was bound to take the mick.
Mr Mason
It wasn't like Eddie was incapable of being in a good mood but he was fairly certain that the group of year 11s were confused by his overly good mood. He could hear the whispers as he wrote up the questions that he wanted them to complete on the board. It wasn't until he closed the textbook in his hand that he saw it again and he couldn't help but smile at the new ring on his finger.
It might not have been traditional but part of him had always felt like that was how their relationship would be. He was definitely more affectionate when they were in public and he had always given her the control over where they were in their relationship. Why wouldn't she end up proposing to him?
Jane had put the idea in his head but he didn't think that she would do anything soon. So it was a shock to walk into the staffroom to her telling Tom and Matt how much she wanted to marry him. It felt like quite an impulsive thing for her to do. Not that he was complaining.
"Simultaneous equations." He announced to the class as he leant against his desk. "Two equations that can be solved at the same time and, overall, one of the easier parts of your GCSE maths. These aren't any harder than what you were doing in year seven and eight. It is just remembering the steps and working methodically."
"Sir?" Aleesha said.
"Yes."
"Is that a new ring?"
As Philip was at a desk near her, it was easy for Eddie to see his smile. Obviously, another male opinion Rachel had got on the ring.
"Yes, it is."
"Did Miss Mason give it to you?" Danielle said.
"Yes, she did." He said, knowing that it was just best to answer their questions now than over the course of the lesson.
"She didn't propose to you, did she?"
It was at that moment that Rachel decided to walk past his classroom. She instantly caught his eye and she gave him a look that meant he should be focusing on his class but her smile gave her away. He wondered whether she had caught sight of the ring as well.
"Sir?" Aleesha said.
He turned his attention back to his class. "Sorry?"
"Miss Mason didn't propose to you, did she?"
"Yes, she did."
"Really?" Danielle said.
He allowed the class to have their moment. If anything, it gave him another chance to look at the ring. The bottom part of the ring was white gold, engraved with Trinity Knots, while the top part was gold, with Faith inscribed in Ogham, the alphabet of the ancient Irish. Whether it meant the faith that she put in him or representing the faith that he had put in her, he didn't know but it felt oddly appropriate that it did say that. He had looked up the Trinity Knot and found that it represented eternity, adding more layers to the ring.
"Yes. I left it up to her." He said once the class started to settle down. "I didn't mind. Although, I think it was a rather Miss Mason thing to do."
"Wait does that mean you are going to be Mr Mason?" Aleesha asked.
"I don't think it works that way."
"Alright, Mr Mason," Bolton said, earning him a high five from Paul.
Eddie sighed. Maybe he shouldn't have told them.
By Monday morning, it was clear that the news of their engagement had spread around the school and so had who had proposed to who. Mainly because of the number of students calling him 'Mr Mason'. Which Rachel seemed to be loving.
"Miss Mason. Mr Mason." Sam said while Lauren laughed next to her.
"This is your fault." He said as Rachel turned her back to the rest of the students walking the corridor to hide her laughter.
"You were the one to say that I should propose to you." She said after she got herself under control.
"Well, I retract that now. I'll propose to you."
"Too late. I've already done it."
"I gathered that Jane was quite upset that it seemed like she was one of the last to know."
"Sally recorded most of it, which calmed her down."
"Michael seems really excited."
"He told me that he was glad that he didn't have to keep it a secret from you."
"Although, I don't know what has happened between Alison and Brad."
"A comment." She turned to him. "I may have casually mentioned that I had to stop Jane from ruining her own engagement to Sally and he questioned it on my way out. Something along the lines of Michael and being bad for him."
"Seemed like at the weekend, Jane had practically adopted Michael."
"That surprised me. At least, we know that she will be a good auntie to any children we might have."
"Are you trying to tell me something, Miss Mason?"
"Not at all, Mr Mason."
Eddie huffed as she laughed.
"And don't worry." She continued. "I didn't propose to you because I wanted you to become Mr Mason. I proposed because I wanted to become Mrs Lawson."
She left him with that thought and it made him smile.
"I know we are still basking in the afterglow of our engagement, but I do think we need to start thinking about what we want." Rachel said as Eddie brought over two plates with their dinner on it.
"You obviously have some idea then." He said as he placed them down and took his seat.
"I… I suppose, I've never imagined myself to have a massive wedding. Even when I was young and had this massive family that would all expect to be invited just because we shared the same blood." She paused as she took a mouthful of food. "Maybe Jane and Sally have always shown me what is important. As you know, it was only me and James at their civil partnership. I'm not saying don't invite your family. But I only want Jane and Sally and Philip. There is no one else I want there from my family."
"You want just family then?"
"Yeah."
"I think some of the staff won't be happy to hear that."
"Eddie, I don't mind having a big party afterwards, just as an excuse for Steph and Grantly to get drunk out of their minds. I'm talking about the service part. I liked how intimate Jane and Sally's was. The people I care about the most."
"Then Michael needs to come."
"Definitely not going to object to that."
She watched him as he thought about it. It was clear that he had thought what most other people did. That he would, by default, have to invite his parents and his brother and family. She could only imagine how long the list of guests was for his wedding to Alison, adding her family, their mutual friends and their separate friends. It was why guest lists did go into the 100s. But with it being his second marriage, maybe he was thinking that he could shed the list down to people that he wanted to be there, like her.
"Give me a bit of time to think about it." He said.
"I'm not saying that we have to get married now."
"But?"
"But," She said with a smile. "Like I said earlier, I do want to be Mrs Lawson."
"I'm guessing that you wouldn't want a church wedding."
"Not the most religious person."
"So down the Town Hall then."
"Sounds more like me."
"Then maybe we should give them a ring or go there at the weekend. See what they have available. If we are only talking about having a few people, then surely it can't take too much planning."
"Not at all." She said. "And the Town Hall isn't far. If we have an afternoon wedding, we can still go to work in the morning."
"God I love you," Eddie said as he laughed.
"What?"
"Even as we talk about our wedding day, you are still thinking about work. I love it."
"You know me, Mr Lawson. I never switch off."
"And I wouldn't want you any other way."
"Good because I am not about to change any time soon."
"Neither am I."
They sat there, smiling at each other for a few moments before they both went back to their meals and talking about the little things. Not that they knew that as they were making plans for their future, someone else was making plans to try and destroy it.
Don't kill me just yet... Okay?
