Chapter 25
Sixteen Years Ago
EPOV
I gaze out the window of the store, watching as people walk around with umbrellas in their hands. The rain is pelting down hard on the streets. I look up to see my mom gazing at the rain and smiling. Back then, my 8-year-old brain couldn't understand why my mother was so fascinated by something as simple as rain.
I just look at her occasionally with confusion. She closes her eyes then, a smile still playing on her lips. The ice-cream in her hand is slowly melting away, but she seems lost in the sounds of the pitter-patter of the raindrops.
"Mom, why do you like rain so much?" I finally ask.
She sighs softly and then opens her eyes to look at me. "It's soothing. When the rain falls down, I sometimes feel like its washing away all my worries with it."
I just tilt my head in confusion. "Huh?"
She shakes her head lightly. "Never mind." Then gestures toward the ice-cream in my hand. "Go on. Finish it."
Mom takes my hand in hers and we start to walk out of the store. We've barely walked away from the store but I'm already drenched on my left side, as Mom and I are sharing an umbrella.
She's humming lightly as we walk when suddenly someone pushes us both hard from the behind. I immediately crash to the ground while Mom is pushed away to the wall. I barely have time to look up but when I do, I see that there is a gun pointed at my face.
I hear my mom screaming but my eyes zero in on the gun and my body freezes. I can't look away, not even to see the face of the man who is pointing the gun at me.
Somebody tries to grab his hand but he manages to shove them away. I open my mouth to scream for Mom, but before I could speak, I hear the sound of the shot being fired. My eyes squeeze shut. I can only hear the noises of people rustling around and screaming, but I can't seem to open my eyes.
When I finally open them, someone is holding my hand. I look up to see my Dad sitting beside me. My eyes immediately start to peruse the surroundings and I realize that I'm in a hospital.
"Mom?" I call out, but my throat hurts and the sound that comes out is very poor in strength.
Dad turns toward me at the sound of my voice. When I see the look on his face, my hand squeezes his in fear. His eyes are cold and emotionless; and I immediately start to shiver.
"Your mom's not here." He finally answers, but there is no emotion in his voice.
"Where—"
"The man shot her." He cuts me off angrily. "He shot her and now she's dead."
I start to shake my head. "No. No." At this point, I'm simply mumbling to myself. All I can remember is the gun and the sound of the gunshot. And then darkness.
Dad scoots closer to me, but I know it's not to comfort me. I immediately start to shift back. "It's all because of you." He says softly. "You insisted on the damn ice-cream. She wouldn't be out there if it weren't for you. The robber aimed at you. But she jumped in to save you. You did this."
I open my mouth to say "No", but my mind fills with Mom's screams, and suddenly I'm unable to refuse it. I… did this. It's because of me.
"Edward, you will pay for this for the rest of your life, do you understand?" His voice is barely a whisper, but my heart constricts in fear. I simply nod.
"Dad, I'm…" I start to sputter, my eyes filled with tears. "I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry." I start to mumble as the sobs take over me. He simply sits beside me, his cold gaze never wavering.
So what did you think? Review and let me know.
