Chapter 40.

=Normal POV=
[January 3; Midday]
[Isle of Berk; Village Square]

Gobber knew he could have made it back to Berk before the day was over, but he didn't care and wasn't rushing to return home after how things were left. Gobber wouldn't be surprised if everyone suddenly wanted Hiccup to return, and then plead at his feet for forgiveness. It didn't matter to Gobber because he knew Hiccup might forgive the tribe, but he'd never come back to live there or become their chief. Gobber used the extra time to stop at the Southern Markets for a few things, grab a bite to eat, and a room for the night while the dragons hid out in the forest behind the inn. The next morning, Gobber headed right off to Berk; he couldn't delay much longer as it had been about a month since he was there. Certainly, if he didn't get back soon; Stoick would send out search parties in fear of Gobber having located Hiccup, and ended up imprisoned for going against the warning. Now, Berk was in the blacksmith's sights, and already, people were forming to get news on Gobber's traveling.

Grump landed carefully, but the other four dragons; technically three since Barf and Belch were one dragon with two heads, were hiding for now. Hiccup's instructions were clear; the riders did not get their dragons back until they understood the note Hiccup sent for them to read first. Stoick was first to approach, then behind him was Astrid, Snotlout, the twins, and Fishlegs. Not far, but still present were leaders from the other islands as it was the new year, there was always a chieftain meeting to discuss updates and whatnot. The leaders present were only Berk's allies. Bog-Burglar, Meathead, Hysteria, Berserker, Outcast, and Peaceable. The only time all the tribes come together as if there is a huge problem affecting all the tribes, which Gobber scarcely felt would happen with this Johann situation. Gobber only called it that because the overall plan and others involved hadn't been revealed yet, at least according to Hiccup.

"Gobber, thank Thor you're alright," Stoick sighed in relief to see his long-time friend land safely, and with his dragon too.

"Of course I'm alright," Gobber replied.

"Did you find him?' Stoick asked.

"No," Gobber stated calmly, shaking his head and closing his eyes to act upset. "I looked everywhere, but nothing. I didn't even find the dragon hunters, so it's possible they've gone out of the Archipelago. I didn't search that far. Only the Southern regions to the markers," He added.

Stoick sighed heavily, closing his eyes, and then looking at Gobber once more. "He's…Never coming back, is he?" Stoick asked.

"I wouldn't bet on it, Stoick. And I can't say I blame him after what happened either," Gobber responded. "I get the tribe being apprehensive to his powers, but you knew…And you didn't say anything to comfort your son, or defend him," Gobber remarked quietly. "But what would I know, I didn't find Hiccup, so I can't speak on his reasoning…" He mentioned before pulling a rolled piece of parchment from the saddlebag on Grump, then held it out to Stoick. "Maybe this will tell you. It's from him,"

"You said you didn't find him," Snotlout stated.

Gobber rolled his eyes and tossed another rolled letter towards Fishlegs, who struggled but caught it. "There's one for you lot too," Gobber said. "I didn't find him, but I found your dragons on my way back, and Stormfly had those letters attached to her. I assume Hiccup sent them back, and they're here, hiding. The letter on the outside says you can't have them until you read what's inside." He clarified.

Stoick took the letter from Gobber and decided he'd read it later. "What did Hiccup say, Fishlegs?" Heather wondered, stepping closer now.

"It's addressed to the Dragon Riders of Berk, so I guess that's us five," Fishlegs stated, pulling the tie off and unrolling the parchment. "Hiccup says this; Dragon Riders, I've decided to give you back your dragons on the reasoning that I believe you've had enough time to sit with your thoughts about what you did. I do hope that it won't happen again, or else, you will lose them again and this time, it will be a permanent removal. I trust you understand this lesson, and will not make the mistake again. This doesn't mean I trust any of you, I only trust you don't want to risk losing your dragons forever."

Fishlegs paused to catch his breath. "One last thing, don't forget my warning. Leave the dragon hunters alone too, I'm working on them. I remain the leader of the dragon riders, but I name Fishlegs Ingerman my second in command. Fishlegs assumes leadership in my absence; he will make all decisions regarding the group for Berk, and if beyond that problem, extended out to our allied riders. If something comes up you can't handle, I will be there to help. With all that said, your punishment is over. Don't make me regret it, or you know the consequences. -Hiccup, Leader of the Dragon Riders." Fishlegs read off and lowered the paper a bit to look at them.

"I assume the letters sent with Stormfly means the dragons were supposed to drop them and wait for you to read before coming out, but since Stormfly gave me the letters when we crossed paths; I had them hide in the cove until you read that," Gobber mentioned before he gave a semi-long whistle. Not long after, Stormfly, Hookfang, Barf, and Belch flew over the trees and landed in line before Astrid, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut. Instantly the riders reunited with their dragons, as Gobber turned to Stoick. "Not going to read yours?"

"Later…" Stoick mumbled, feeling that this would be a letter saying Hiccup was never coming back and wouldn't forgive them. "Let's get back to things…" He ordered.

The tribe began to disperse as Stoick tucked the letter away in his tunic shirt, then lead the island rulers towards the great hall for the meeting. Gobber shook his head, sighing before he made his way to the forge to unpack and relax. All Gobber hoped was that Hiccup was alright, and they'd be able to see one another soon and that it wouldn't be because Hiccup was breaking down from everything.

. . .

[January 20; Afternoon]
[Hunter Isle; Center Town]

Hiccup couldn't believe that he'd been here on Hunter Isle for just about two months now. The holidays were over, it was nearly February, and Hiccup would be twenty years old at the end of next month; he couldn't believe that either. Hiccup was doing well among the dragon hunters, no one minded him there, or his powers, which he'd worked with a little bit after Gobber left on the 2nd of January. It had been eighteen days since then, three days short of it being considered three weeks. Viggo and Ryker are the ones who worked with Hiccup and his powers, feeling they had a better understanding of how they operated based on conversations and observations since the abilities were revealed that night on the ship in the Southern Markets. Hiccup still didn't have full control, but he found he could his abilities with some ease as long as he was focused and wasn't scared or nervous.

Hiccup learned how to levitate any object or person and there weren't any weight limits. Some situations called for only one hand, and some required two if heavier. Hiccup only struggled a bit on heavy things, and until he mastered it more, he couldn't hold heavy things for long periods of time. Hiccup also had barriers mostly mastered, as expected; it was a defensive power that really only activated when there was some kind of trouble in shielding himself or someone else from objects coming at him or said person. Another ability Hiccup sort of had a hunch about was sensing emotions of others, at least once he practiced a bit. Before, Hiccup really only felt when something didn't feel right, but now he could use this power to know when someone was being honest or lying. Hiccup could also still feel when something around them was off, or coming close, which was drawn from the day he sensed Cinder coming at the ship.

Hiccup did have healing abilities, proven when he hurt himself in the forge, and Ryker suggested he try to focus on healing the injury; it took a few tries, but Hiccup managed to heal the injury enough to stop the burning sensation and heal slightly. Hiccup wrapped it up regardless, and it was completely healed the next day. So not only could he heal himself fully now on small injuries, but a bigger one like what he had after Viggo and Ryker found him in the water; Hiccup had rapid healing abilities, meaning his body would heal itself faster than average in an unconscious or sleeping state. One other ability seemed to be that Hiccup could understand just about any language by looking at it, as if his powers just translated it into the main language Hiccup understood as Norse. Hiccup could read, write, and speak new languages as if he'd done it all his life.

So far, that's Hiccup had worked within the last few weeks and knew there would be more training and learning as time went on. Hiccup wasn't scared of having special abilities; it was actually kind of cool. What Hiccup was afraid of was losing control of his more powers he might have been too strong from years of having to lay dormant. Hiccup knew it could happen, and it had. The barrier practice had shown Hiccup that it wasn't always a shield, and as it happened on Berk when his friends got on his case to stay in control, Hiccup learned his powers could shove people away from him if he got scared or mad. It happened to Viggo and Ryker; in a test, situation to see if they couldn't recreate what happened that day. That was how Hiccup and the brothers were working with Hiccup's powers, by going off things that happened already.

Hiccup ended up summoning his powers, forcing the brothers to be shoved back when getting too close as Hiccup wanted to be left alone, but getting worked up by the constant being on his back. The brothers didn't get hurt, but they ended up a good few feet away from Hiccup on their backs. It was definitely an invisible force that did the pushing, Viggo and Ryker confirmed it felt like they were being pushed back by an unseen wall, but not like the wind as it was solid. It's been classified as a defensive power, as the barriers. Hiccup had felt bad but was told not to worry about it as Viggo and Ryker knew what they were going for in reaction. Currently, the brothers and Hiccup were taking a break from Magic Training, which is what it had been dubbed as. The break was due to having lunch cut short because of a dragon raid. Hiccup came to realize the attacks really did happen whenever out here in the Southwestern direction of the Archipelago.

However, this time, Hiccup wasn't taking part in the raid like usual. Hiccup decided he was going to sit on Toothless's back, watching everything intently. This choice was made because Hiccup had looked everywhere for a source nearby, and found nothing. That left Hiccup to believe there had to be something on the island making these dragons so hostile to the dragon hunters. Hiccup needed to find out why, and that could be the solution needed to stop the raids. Viggo and Ryker approved the idea, but Hiccup was still close, in case of emergencies like on Snoggletog when Run nearly got taken off by a dragon.

The raid had been going on for about an hour, and Hiccup didn't see anything yet. "I just don't get it, Toothless…" Hiccup mumbled, still watching. "I don't see what could be making them this way…" He added as the Night Fury crooned softly, sensing his rider's frustration on the matter. "What do you think?" He asked. Toothless looked around at everything still. "There has to be something because they're calm with us, or at least when we take charge and make everyone-," Hiccup stopped, his eyes widening. Toothless warbled questioningly at why Hiccup stopped talking, trying to look back at his friend. Hiccup started running over every raid since he arrived on Hunter Isle, going over the different scenarios of how raids went from start to finish. "Oh, my Gods…I think I figured it out…" He breathed in shock.

Hiccup looked at everything closely, really studying interactions between dragons and hunters. Dragons weren't going after food or people, they were trying to get close in curiousness, but couldn't because the Vikings were weapons up and trying to keep them away. Hiccup's eyes widened more now. The dragons weren't attacking unless attacked first, and there was hostility because this happens every time. Hiccup saw Ryker and Viggo getting cornered by a Titan Wing Gronckle. "Take us down, pal, right between them," Hiccup said as Toothless shot down, landing between the dragon and the brothers.

"Hiccup?" The two said in surprise.

"Put your weapons down," Hiccup told them firmly.

"What? Why? We've got this under control," Ryker remarked.

"The weapons are necessary to protect ourselves, Hiccup. At least until you find a solution to our raid problem," Viggo stated softly, shrugging. "How's the observing going? Any luck?"

"I've got a theory, but I need you to put your weapons down to test it…" Hiccup informed as he got off Toothless, and moved closer to the brothers. Toothless remained in place, trying to keep the Gronckle at bay until Hiccup was ready with his plan. Viggo and Ryker complied, showing they trusted Hiccup's judgment and were willing to listen if he had maybe discovered the cause of their raids. Viggo and Ryker lowered their weapons at their sides and stood on either side of Hiccup. "Alright, bud…Let the Gronckle through," Hiccup told his friend. Toothless shifted out of the way as the Gronckle charged forward at the three males. As the dragon came closer, it slowed a bit and Hiccup saw curiousness, but also hesitation.

Hiccup pulled Inferno off his back and hit the button to set it on fire. The dragon got scared, Hiccup felt it. Still, the Gronckle pressed forward quickly. Hiccup suddenly waved Inferno at the dragon with narrowed eyes, the same thing a lot of hunters were doing to keep dragons back. Now, the Gronckle got angry and roared, charging fast. Hiccup sensed the hostility as it was just a few feet away. Without warning, Hiccup doused the blade and brought his right hand up, the dragon's eyes widened a little from the slits of anger. Hiccup tossed Inferno aside, out of his hand and out of reach. Viggo and Ryker were only watching to try and see whatever Hiccup's theory was. The Gronckle slid to a stop in front of Hiccup, the snout just about to touch Hiccup's palm. Hiccup gave a gentle, reassuring smile to the dragon as it sniffed his palms before pressing in with a low purr-like rumble.

"I knew it…" Hiccup whispered.

"Care to share your findings!?" Someone yelled. Hiccup looked around to find many struggling in the same area.

"I found the source of your problem," Hiccup told the brothers.

"And…Why do they raid us, Hiccup," Truda inquired softly.

"It's because of you all," Hiccup smiled.

"'S'cuse me?" Vera huffed in confusion.

"It's you and your weapons," Hiccup clarified. "If you lower or toss them, the dragons won't be aggressive and attack," He added.

"How can you be sure?" Viggo asked.

"I'll prove it to you, but you have to trust me," Hiccup informed. "Have everyone lower or toss their weapons,"

"Dragon Hunters! All weapons in hand, lower or toss them, now!" Ryker called out, having a louder voice between himself and Viggo. Many looked shocked and confused, but wouldn't disobey the order once Viggo nodded to confirm the order. As soon as weapons were down, or thrown a bit away from the person, dragons stopped the attack, but continued to growl and glare. "Okay, this hasn't made them leave,"

"I never claimed it would make them leave the island, I told you that they wouldn't be aggressive and attack," Hiccup smiled. "And they've stopped attacking,"

"So what now?" Ryker inquired, finding himself facing a yellow-looking Rumblehorn.

"I'll show you, and we'll use this girl right here," Hiccup said, motioning to the Rumblehorn. "You saw what I did with the Gronckle, yes?" Ryker nodded. "I want you to do the same with the Rumblehorn. I want you to approach it, and as you get closer, either set the sword down or toss it aside and keep walking until you're right in front of her with your hands up and palms showing. I want you to smile at her and say it's okay and that you won't hurt her,"

"And if that doesn't work since you said this is just a theory!" Ryker glared a bit.

"Then Toothless and I will step in to stop it, and I'll admit I was wrong. But for now, you have to trust me," Hiccup reminded. Ryker groaned a little, but sighed and took a breath. Ryker had seen Hiccup work with dragons before, including Cinder and it had been the same general idea. Ryker said he trusted Hiccup and believed in his dragon work abilities, so he needed to follow those words through now.

Ryker did exactly as Hiccup said with approaching slow and setting his weapon down halfway there and putting his hands up. The dragon seemed calm, but still watching intently. "It's okay…I-I'm not going to hurt you," Ryker finally said when close enough, he got the warning growl when to stop nearing. The Rumblehorn seems to relax a bit, but still stared into Ryker's eyes, which were calm, and perhaps a bit nervous, but confident too. After a few moments, the Rumblehorn eased in and let Ryker's hands be on her snout; then she pulled back and stepped closer to nudge his arm.

"I don't understand," Hertha asked.

"These dragons are not raiding you; they're trying to coexist with you. The dragons don't want to fight, but they will become hostile and aggressive if they're being attacked or feel threatened. They're only protecting themselves, as you are doing with your weapons. If you put them away or don't draw them when dragons come to the island and out of the forests; they'll be as calm as Cinder and Toothless are when they are here," Hiccup explained. "They've taken notice of other places that have peace with dragons, ones that just let unbonded, wild dragons chill in the village and they're trying to do it here. But when you all draw weapons at once if there's a big group; you think it's raid and attack, so they attack back." He said with a shrug.

"How did you figure it out?" Viggo asked, putting his sword away now, others did the same too and noticed how relaxed the dragons were.

"I realized that any of the times since I've been here, the dragons won't attack me because I never draw my weapon. And when Toothless roars at them to stop, he has them leave for their own safety. But when I watched just you guys try to handle this raid without me stepping in to have the dragons back off; your weapons are up and they attack because they're trying to defend themselves. I figure if you stop pulling your weapons when the dragons come, show them a little kindness and reassurance you won't hurt them; they'll just roam free as Cinder does. No rider, no bond, just here as a friend and knows he's safe." Hiccup explained.

"That's brilliant, and I feel stupid we didn't think of it sooner…" Ryker mumbled. "So…This means to stop the attacks-," He paused.

"We have to stop hunting dragons here, and have peace with them, doesn't it?" Runa cut her uncle off.

Hiccup nodded to her to confirm. "If that is what must be done to ensure the safety of my tribe," Viggo began with a soft sigh before looking out to the members of the Dragon Hunter tribe. "From this day forward, there is to be no more dragon hunting on this island. The dragons are welcome any time they wish, to always be treated with kindness and acceptance when they visit," He announced.

Hiccup couldn't believe it; he got to the bottom of things and Viggo made a formal declaration to his tribe that dragon-hunting was no longer allowed on Hunter Isle! The dragons were allowed to come any time to visit. Hiccup already knew this would lead to bonding, which once Viggo and Ryker did, inevitably now; the dragon hunting business would stop because once they understood the bond by feeling it; they would never be able to hunt dragons again. The same way Hiccup learned that with Toothless. Hiccup was so happy right now, and things were shaping up to be near perfect for his new life.
