Drew rubbed his arm and took a deep breath, "Um…this is my mom, but you're only allowed to call her Detective Hailey."
Hailey set her hand on his back and raised her eyebrows.
"Please," Drew blushed. He bit his lip and continued, "She's a detective at the 21st police department of Chicago, so she saves a lot of people and solves cases which is police talk for she solves mysteries."
Hailey laughed softly, "Thank you, sweetheart."
"I'm not done," he whispered, "My mom didn't make me, but she's adopting me and that's okay. She loves me a lot."
Ms. Sampson smiled and lightly clapped her hands, "Great job, Drew."
Drew smiled back and grabbed Hailey's hand, "Thank you."
"Can your mom read a story to all of us?" Ms. Sampson asked.
Drew looked up at Hailey, "Can you?"
"I definitely can," Hailey smiled, "What book should I read?"
"We have so many!" Drew ran over to the bookshelves and looked through until he found the perfect book. He walked back to the front of the room and passed Hailey a book, "It has dinosaurs and police officers."
Hailey laughed, "That is the perfect book."
Ms. Sampson pulled over her chair, "Feel free to sit here."
"Thank you so much," Hailey sat with the book.
Drew sat right at her feet and folded his hands.
Hailey cleared her throat and started reading to the class.
Two boys in the back of the room were whispering, and Drew turned back to glare at them.
Hailey noticed him and lightly touched him with her foot.
"Mom," he breathed.
Hailey shook her head and continued reading.
Ms. Sampson walked to the back of the room and whispered to the boys. Drew rubbed his arms again and tried paying attention to Hailey, but the boys were now arguing quietly with the teacher.
Hailey flipped a page of the book and saw Drew's hands twitching in his lap. She attempted to put a smile on her face for the other kids despite how worried she was getting about Drew.
"Stand up and let's go in the hall," Ms. Sampson said quietly.
Drew squeezed his eyes shut and dug his nails into his arms.
"I don't want to," one of the boys said.
"Would you shut up?" Drew yelled.
"Drew!" Hailey put the book down.
Drew stood up and balled his hands into fists, "Let my mom read!"
"I've already read this book though," the second boy said.
"I don't care!" Drew marched over to him.
"Hey, no," Hailey quickly walked through the kids and set a hand on Drew's arm, "Drew, look at me."
"Are you throwing a temper tantrum?" the first boy asked.
"Jonathon and Brandon, you do not talk like that," Ms. Sampson said.
"It's not a temper tantrum!" Drew stomped his foot right on a girl's hand.
"He stepped on me!" a girl screamed.
Hailey tried picking Drew up, "Drew, focus on me."
"Boys, stand up and let's walk in the hallway," Ms. Sampson set her hands on their shoulders.
The second boy laughed, "Drew's face is really red."
Drew jerked his hand away from Hailey and punched him in the face knocking him to the ground.
All the kids started screaming and running to hide throughout the room.
"Drew Alexander," Hailey dragged him away, "No!"
"Dad said I could hit bullies," Drew panted.
Hailey's eyes narrowed and she shook her head.
The principal walked into the room, "What's all the screaming for?"
"And then she said she's like a bird and wants to nest," Jay said quietly, "That's weird, right?"
"I don't know, man," Adam shook his head, "If you need help, though, I'll be there."
"Thanks," Jay lightly hit his shoulder and walked out of the break room to see Hailey walking up the stairs with Drew trailing behind her. "Hey!" he smiled, "I didn't know you were taking Drew out early. How's my star student?"
"Go sit," Hailey pointed to the break room, "Now."
Drew groaned, but still walked quickly past Jay into the room.
He plopped on the couch and Adam looked back at him, "Hey, dude, what's up?"
"I hate my life," Drew threw his backpack on the ground.
Adam's eyes widened and he walked out, "What's up with Drew?"
Hailey walked straight to Jay and poked his chest, "You taught him to fight, and yet I was the one having to pick up the pieces today and deal with the consequences alone."
"What're you talking about?" Jay asked, glancing back at Drew.
"Some kids pissed him off and he jumped one of them," Hailey hissed, "Full on punch right to the face."
Adam whistled and moved quickly to his desk.
"I haven't forgotten that you were very much a part of this," Hailey spun to face him.
"He punched someone?" Jay said.
"Yeah, he punched someone!" Hailey yelled, "And now he's suspended the rest of the week!"
"It's Tuesday!" Jay's eyes widened.
"I know!" Hailey poked him again, "You caused this."
Kevin walked into the room with Hank and Kim, "What'd Jay do now?"
"And you were a part of this too," Hailey turned to him, "The three of you are very bad influences."
"Hailey, what happened?" Kim asked softly.
"Drew's been suspended until Monday for punching someone," Hailey crossed her arms.
Hank looked in the break room, "So you brought him here?"
"What else was I supposed to do?" Hailey snapped.
Hank shook his head and walked over to Drew, closing the door behind him.
"Hailey, I really did not expect him to do this," Jay set a hand on her arm.
"Don't touch me right now," Hailey backed up, "I'm fuming."
"Clearly," Jay breathed.
"Oh, no you don't," Hailey shook her head, "You do not-"
"Hey, hey," Kim stepped between the two of them and set her hand on Hailey's shoulder, "Let's take a walk."
Hailey set her jaw and turned to walk down the stairs with Kim on her heels.
Jay ran his hand over his face, "I don't know what to do."
"You could try talking to him," Kevin nodded toward the closed door, "Cause I don't think Hailey wants to see your face yet."
Jay rolled his eyes and walked over to the break room. He took a deep breath and opened the door slightly.
"-and it's not always the best idea," Hank said.
"Because of consequences?" Drew asked.
Hank nodded, "Because of consequences. What's your consequence for your little fight?"
Drew sniffled and wiped his hand under his nose, "I'm not allowed to go to school until Monday."
"I'm not gonna lie to you, kid, that's not good," Hank shrugged.
"I can tell. My mom's really mad at me," Drew mumbled.
Jay pushed the door open more, "Hey, mind if I talk to Drew for a bit?"
"Sure," Hank gently patted Drew's knee and stood, "I'll talk to you later, okay?"
"Okay," Drew whispered and watched him leave.
"Thanks," Jay said quietly to Hank then stepped further into the room and closed the door behind him.
Drew bit his lip and scratched his arms over his jacket.
Jay shook his head and sat at the table. He picked up Drew's backpack and looked through it until he found the small fidget cube. He passed it to Drew and said, "Use that."
Drew grabbed it and stared at it as he played with the buttons.
Jay waited a minute before asking, "Can you please explain to me what happened?"
Drew glanced up and shook his head.
"Let me restate that," Jay leaned forward to rest his elbows on his knees, "You need to explain to me what happened."
"I don't want to," Drew said.
"I don't care," Jay shook his head.
"You're going to hate me," Drew's lip wavered.
"No, I will never hate you, remember?" Jay asked, "I'm also not going to hurt you."
"But I hurt someone else, it's fair," Drew whimpered.
Jay moved to sit next to him on the couch, "Hitting you is never fair and is not something I would ever even imagine doing."
"I was so mad," Drew started crying, "Jonathon and Brandon were being so disrespectful to Mom."
Jay nodded, "And that upset you."
Drew sniffled and put his head in his hands, "I can't go to school all week. I have to miss the Halloween party."
"Sometimes doing things that are against the rules means having to do things that you don't like," Jay said.
"I won't even being doing anything!" Drew cried, "I don't even know what will happen to me. I'm going to be homeless."
"Drew, you will not be homeless," Jay set his hand on Drew's shoulder.
"Don't touch me," Drew moved away.
"Okay," Jay said softly and put his hands in his lap, "I'm sorry."
"I'm going to be homeless," Drew repeated, "I'm only seven, I'm not allowed to stay at home alone and I'm not allowed at school and I can't work here because I'm not a detective or a police officer."
Jay sighed, "Yeah, it's a problem, but we're going to figure it out. I promise you, you will not be homeless."
There was a knock on the door and Hailey walked in, "Hi."
"Hey," Jay ran a hand through his hair, "We were just talking about how Drew's not allowed at school this week."
Hailey nodded and sat at the table, "It's a very bad thing and is not what should be happening."
Drew cried, "I know that now!"
"Drew," Jay said softly, "Take a deep breath for me."
"Just kick me out and make me homeless now," Drew slid down on the couch and covered his face.
Jay looked to Hailey and whispered, "He thinks that since he can't be home alone or at school that he's homeless for the week."
Hailey nodded, "I can tell."
"I can hear you talking about me," Drew hiccupped.
"Can you sit up so we can talk?" Jay asked.
Drew groaned and sat up with tears still falling down his face.
Hailey reached out to wipe his eyes, but Jay grabbed her wrist and shook his head. Hailey breathed out and nodded, sitting back in her seat.
"I'll let you hit me," Drew mumbled.
"Oh no," Hailey said, "No. We will not hit you. Ever."
"It's fine, you can punish me," Drew sniffled and wiped his nose on his sleeve.
"Drew," Jay ignored Drew wincing and gently held his face in his hand, "Look at me and listen to what I'm saying. Mom and I will never ever hit you."
"Even though I hit someone else?" Drew asked quietly.
"Even though you hit someone else," Jay nodded, "Hitting you has never even crossed my mind; it's never crossed Mom's mind. You will be disciplined, do you remember that word?"
"Yeah," Drew rubbed his hands on his pants.
"What does it mean?" Hailey asked.
Drew swallowed, "That you won't hurt me, but that I do need to learn from what I did."
"Right," Hailey said, "So one of those things will be going to bed early again."
Drew's eyes watered and he slightly nodded.
"And you will still need to do schoolwork," Jay added.
"But where?" Drew asked.
Hailey took a deep breath, "Dad and I will figure that out."
"You should put me in jail," Drew said.
"No," Jay's eyes widened, "No, not at all, we will not even walk you down there. You will not-"
"Jay," Hailey grabbed his hand and shook her head, "It's okay."
"He's not-"
"I know," Hailey nodded, "We won't take him down there. We'll figure something out."
Drew rubbed his eyes, "Are we going home now?"
"No," Jay sighed, "We need to talk about what you did. I know you were mad and upset, but punching someone is not okay and I know I taught you how to, so I'm sorry if you're confused."
"I guess I did make a mistake," Drew admitted quietly, "You did tell me to only hit people if they hit me first and Brandon didn't hit me. I hit him."
"Which was wrong," Hailey said.
Drew nodded and blinked his eyes quickly.
Jay breathed out slowly, "I…we're in the middle of a case."
"I know," Hailey crossed her arms and sat back.
"I caused a problem," Drew bit his lip.
"Yes, but we'll figure it out," Hailey ran a hand through her hair, "I'll go talk to Voight."
Jay nodded and looked through Drew's backpack, "While we wait for Mom, you need to work on your math."
Hailey walked out of the room and right into Hank's office, "Sarge."
He looked up from a file in his hands, "How is he?"
"Upset," Hailey closed the door and sat in one of the chairs, "We don't know what to do with him. We know that we're in a case and we don't want to leave everyone like this, but we can't take him with us, so-"
"Leave him here," Hank finished, "Bring him here everyday. I'll watch him or Trudy if I can't. We'll put him to work for you two."
Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Sarge, you don't have to do that. He's only seven anyways, what's he going to do?"
"Sharpen pencils, sort stuff," Hank shrugged, "We'll figure it out."
"I don't know," Hailey shook her head, "That's a lot to ask of you."
"We help each other out here," Hank said, "Don't fight it, just accept the help."
Hailey bit her lip, "Are you sure?"
"One hundred percent," Hank nodded, "It'll teach him that he'd rather be at school."
Hailey weakly laughed, "I hope so."
Hank stared at her for a moment before saying, "He said he did it because a boy was disrespectful toward you."
Hailey rolled her eyes, "He was talking while I was reading a book, it really wasn't a big deal."
"But it was to him," Hank interrupted, "And I understand where he's coming from."
Hailey breathed out, "I guess, yeah."
"What happened wasn't okay, but we can't just write him off," Hank said.
Hailey nodded, "I know."
"Want the rest of the day off?" Hank asked.
"Not really," Hailey said softly, "I always planned on coming back after going to his class and I know Jay had some leads going before I left."
"Then send him in here," Hank looked through his desk, "I'll watch him for an hour or so and then send him down to Trudy till the end of the day."
"Would she really want that?" Hailey asked.
"She's always saying how nice he is," Hank set a clipboard on his desk, "It'll work out, Hailey."
Hailey took a deep breath, "Thank you."
Hank nodded, "You're welcome."
Hailey smiled slightly and walked out of his office. She looked in the break room and said, "Drew, grab your stuff. You're going to stay with Sergeant Voight for a little bit."
"At his house?" Drew squeaked.
"No," Hailey shook her head, "You'll just do your work in his office while Dad and I work."
"He's okay with that?" Jay stood.
Hailey nodded, "It was his idea."
Drew sighed, "Well, I guess I deserve this." He dragged his backpack out of the room to the office.
Jay looked at Hailey, "How'd this happen?"
Hailey shrugged, "He said he feels for him and wants to help out. He's going to bore him to death, doesn't sound like a bad thing."
Jay chuckled, "Okay then."
"Should we get back to work?" Hailey suggested with a small smile.
"Looks like our only option," Jay nodded and walked out with her.
