Grocery Run
Hello, everyone. This prompt was suggested by a guest. It's Crane- Grocery Run- post series. Enjoy.
It was Crane's turn to go on the grocery run. Adam, Brian, and Crane looked around the house thinking about anything they needed.
"Crane put flour on your list." Adam said.
"Done. How many bags?" Crane answered.
"Two."
"Grab two bags of sugar while you're at it." Brian suggested. "Thanksgiving is next Thursday."
"Ok." Crane answered. "Adam, is there anything Hannah needs?"
"I don't know. The baby hasn't made it easy for her to eat. Probably just some snacks." Adam sighed.
"OK."
"I'll go ask."
Adam went upstairs and asked Hannah who groaned and tried to go back to sleep. Adam came downstairs and sighed.
"Just grab something for her." Adam sighed.
"I'll try." Crane answered. "I wish someone would come with me. I'm gonna need three carts."
"Brian can go with you. I have to stay with Hannah."
"That'll work."
Crane and Brian went to town.
"I have to get a few things at the hardware store first. I'll be right back." Brian said. Crane walked into the grocery store and started looking around. He grabbed some of what they needed and put them in the cart. Then he saw that they didn't have the brand of flour that they usually grabbed.
"Great." Crane sighed as he picked up a couple of bags of flour to see what made them different. "Which one do Brian and Hannah use?"
He eventually gave up and moved on. Then he saw the sugar and found that there was no more sugar.
"Just my luck." Crane mumbled. Brian walked in and found Crane.
"Did you get the sugar?" Brian asked.
"There's no more sugar."
"Have you looked everywhere else? What about the flour?"
"They didn't have the brand that Hannah usually gets."
They went around and grabbed the rest of the groceries.
"What do you think Hannah would want?" Crane wondered.
"I don't know. Food?" Brian answered.
"You're no help, Brian."
"Sorry."
"We still have to go back and see if there's any more sugar or flour."
"Let's just get her some granola bars."
"Ok."
They grabbed the granola bars and then went to where the flour was.
"Usually, they have the brand we use." Brian sighed.
"Can't we just use one of the other brands?" Crane wondered.
"Not if you want to deal with a sick older brother. We tried these other brands and it seemed to make him sick. It's why we used the one we had."
"I never knew that. This is why I never did the grocery runs. I was never told anything."
"Well, you know now."
"Now, we have to find the sugar."
They went over to the sugar to look again and saw that it was still empty.
"Looks like we're going into Sonora." Crane sighed.
"Great." Brian answered. They went to the cash register and bought the food.
"That's a lot of food for two men." An old lady said.
"Not just two people eat this. This feeds 8 people." Crane answered.
"But do you really need that much."
"Yes, we do."
Crane ignored anything the old lady said after that. They paid for the food and went out to the jeep and loaded it with the groceries.
"Did you notice how that lady was in there longer than us and she bought a lot of flour and sugar?" Crane wondered.
"Yeah. And how she tried to wessel us out of our food." Brian answered. "Let's go."
They got in the jeep and drove to Sonora. They got to the store and Brian stayed out in the jeep. Crane went in and saw that same old lady grabbing bags of sugar and flour and putting them in her cart.
"You seem to need a lot of flour and sugar for a little old lady." Crane scoffed.
"I do a lot of baking. What's it to you?" The old lady snapped.
"That brand of flour that you're buying. It's the most expensive brand. It also happens to be a brand for people that get sick from the other flours."
"I'm one of those people."
"Yeah, but you bought about two dozen bags of sugar and about a dozen bags of flour. Why do you need any more?"
"That's none of your business."
Then the manager walked over.
"Is there a problem here?" He asked.
"This man is harassing me." The old lady spat. "He's been following me all over the county trying to wessel me out of sugar and flour."
"Sir, my brother and I watched her buy enough sugar and flour to make a few dozen pies and cakes. Now, she's here buying even more." Crane calmly explained.
"Well, ma'am, I hate to tell ya this, but we have a limit on how much you can buy. You're buying more than enough and there are plenty of other people who need sugar and flour. We only allow the purchase of two bags per customer." The manager stated.
"But I need this." The old lady begged. "Please, let me have it."
"I'm sorry, but so does everyone else. Mr. McFadden, you can get what you need."
"Thank you, sir." Crane thanked as he grabbed the flour and sugar from the lady's cart. He paid for them and then he went out to the jeep.
"What took you so long?" Brian asked.
"An old lady who couldn't read what was one foot in front of her." Crane answered.
"You mean she tried to buy more flour and sugar here?"
"Yep."
"How was she caught?"
"She didn't see that there was a limit. Only two bags of flour and sugar per customer."
"We should tell to do that at his store."
"You can. I'm done grocery shopping for a long while."
They drove home and when they arrived, they saw Adam waiting.
"What took you guys so long? It doesn't take 5 hours to go shopping." Adam exclaimed.
"IT's a long story, Adam." Crane answered.
They took the groceries inside and Crane told Adam the story.
"Some people are just downright greedy." Adam chuckled.
"Yeah." Crane answered.
"Did you get nuts for Hannah?"
"Nope. We got granola bars. You told us to just grab her something."
"She wants nuts."
"What kind of nuts?"
"Mixed."
"You can go back out and get it."
"I can't. Hannah needs me to be her pillow."
Crane grabbed the keys and went back out to the store. When he arrived back home, he saw Hannah and handed her the box of mixed nuts.
"Thanks, Crane. How was grocery shopping?" Hannah wondered.
"Not fun at all." Crane answered.
