Through the mirror Part 3

Mom tries to take Diana

...

"You're not taking my daughter!" Nick was standing in front of the elevator in the middle of the night.

"Come with me or get out of my way! You know what's best for her!" Kelly was determined. She had Diana and was leaving.

"Mom, I love you but I will kill you if you try to take my daughter from me."

"Nicky, you know she can't stay here with that thing!"

"What 'thing?' Are you talking about my wife! And yes, my daughter stays with us!"

"What? You know better than to trust those things! Come with me! You know what's best for her."

"You will not call my wife a thing again! Now, you can stay with us or you can go, but you aren't taking my daughter. You do realize Diana is a Hexenbiest right?"

"Why do you keep calling her your daughter? She's my daughter! You never cared about her before."

"Mom! She's my daughter!"

She looks at him surprised. He never had any attachment to her before. Not just that but she can sense he's ready to kill her over Diana. He's in full-on battle mode. She won't get the jump on him like she did earlier. There's something different though. He looks greyish, she can't see any breathing, and he's angry. She sees he's got the big stick thing in his hand too.

Now Adalind is up "Everything OK here?"

Nick looks over "Yep, mom and Diana were just getting a glass of water and going back to bed."

Adalind senses Kelly's thoughts. She doesn't wogue but the witch ripples across her face "You aren't taking our daughter!"

Kelly looks at Adalind "Since when did you start caring about my daughter?"

"What?" Adalind is now upset. Her eyes flash dull grey and half the kitchen floats up into the air.

Kelly is completely surprised by this reaction out of both of them. Adalind had always hated Diana and was constantly trying to kill her. Nick had gone with them for her protection - but had never shown any attachment to the girl.

Adalind looks straight at Kelly. She is now actively reading Kelly's mind "What do you mean I always hated her? Do you know how many people we have killed and how many times I have died over our daughter?"

"What?" Kelly is incredulous "You traded her away to that old Hexenbiest Pesch lady to get your powers back. Nick and I were in the resistance. We rescued Diana out of the dungeon in that castle where you were shacking up with Prince Eric! You had Diana killed! And why do you keep calling Diana "our" kid? She's not Nicks!"

"Mom!" Nick is frustrated "None of that stuff happened here. This is an entire different universe. You had Diana for about a year before the Royals murdered you and kidnapped Diana. Renard is the one who got her back from a terrorist group called Black Claw. And yes - she is my daughter too!"

"What? That makes no sense!" Kelly is looking at them. "No more of your hexenbiest tricks!" And Kelly pitches a knife at Adalind.

Adalind is completely unfazed. The knife swerves around her head missing by half an inch and is assimilated into the swirling cloud of kitchen things. Undeterred Kelly starts reaching for another knife.

Nick isn't giving an inch "Mom! Stop before you get hurt. You're not doing this tonight."

"I can't believe you fell for her witching! She's hunted us every day for eight years straight. I'm ending this now!" Kelly slides another knife out of her sleeve.

She lunges at Adalind and Nick says "Fine!" and blasts a shock wave out of the staff. It doesn't touch anything in the house except Kelly, who is blasted to the floor.

...

Kelly's eyes slowly open up and she is laying in bed. Instantly panic flashes across her eyes until she sees Diana laying on her shoulder. She sighs a deep sigh of relief and kisses Diana's head. She looks around and it's daylight outside. Little Kelly and Catherine are already climbing up on her in the bed and start pestering her "Grandma! Grandma! Are you awake?"

She looks over and Nick and Adalind are sitting at the table drinking coffee and talking. Nick has the baby in his lap while he sips his coffee. She watches her son smile and put his hand on Adalind's hand. "This is strange!" she thinks to herself but soon three kids are chattering at her all at once again.

Adalind sees Kelly is awake and comes over with a cup of coffee. Adalind tries to shoo the kids away "Kids, give Grandma a chance to wake up a bit" but they are already chattering and pulling on her telling her all about the TV show they were watching that morning

Kelly comes over to the table cautiously. Adalind says "You probably don't know about the DNA test do you?"

"DNA test?" Kelly is confused and looks at Nick "Did you get her pregnant with Diana too here? How does a Grimm get a Hexenbiest pregnant anyway? That's impossible."

Nick rolls his eyes. He knows it's going to take some time and he doesn't really want to go through the whole birds and the bees in front of the kids right now. He knows he needs to explain some of it though. "No, Mom, her dad Sean Renard did a DNA paternity test to make sure she was his daughter, not his brother Eric's. It turns out that Diana has a lot of my DNA. Sean is her dad, but I am sort of like a second father."

"What? How?"

"She has my Blood of a Grimm. Adalind passed it to her."

Diana smiles and says "I have two dads and two moms!"

Adaind smirks at Kelly and asks "What do you want us to call you? Grandma? Grandmother?"

She is speechless. It never occurred to her. She was always just Mom.

Nick looks knowingly "Mom, things are completely different here. I know it's difficult and nobody asked you if you wanted to come here. We have been working with Diana about that. Remind me to tell you about the dinosaurs some time. Anyway, I know this is confusing. Do you want to go back to the world you came from? Maybe that would be better."

Diana looks up at her with a sad look "Are you leaving?"

Kelly thinks: Leave without Diana? She couldn't leave her daughter behind. Go back to wherever she had been? She ran her fingers in Diana's hair. Nausea and cold chills flashed across her reminding her of the endless gnawing emptiness of the last two months. She had a vision of Diana and Nick both dying in her arms. Every single person she loved there was dead. She had buried her sister, her son, and her daughter. The only thing left for her in that place was revenge and lonliness. Revenge only lasts so long. She had a whole family here including four grandchildren! She couldn't leave!

Kelly looked at their family and it still didn't make any sense to her. Did it have to make sense though?

She was still completely and utterly surprised about Adalind caring for Diana at all, much less being willing to fight over her. Nick too! Then this bit about Nick sort of being Diana's second father by blood? That was just weird. She thought for a minute - and then smiled. That made Diana her actual granddaughter, sort of. But since Adalind carried Nick's Grimm Blood and had passed it to Diana - was Adalind sort of like her daughter too?

She wasn't leaving Diana behind. She couldn't do it.

She tousled Diana's hair as two more kids tried to climb up into her lap. She looked at the family again.

It didn't make any sense, but she liked it.
