Arc 4, Chapter 4
-Kirigakure-
(Hidden Mist Village)
Unlike the Hidden Leaf Village, whose massive walls expanded over the sprawling green forest that surrounded the village, the Hidden Mist Village's walls vanished the higher up they went until its top ultimately disappeared in a thick cloud of mist.
"Wow, this is one of the Five great shinobi villages," Ken mumbled to himself as he attempted to peer through the thick mist. Besides a few poorly lit black silhouettes that could only belong to towering buildings, he couldn't see anything of importance.
As he and Karin, still encircled by the group of Hunter Ninjas approached the walls Ken felt somewhat giddy and excited to see what the inside of the village would be like; he hoped it wouldn't be as crowded as Konoha's streets were. Seeing new places, especially places of interest like the home of one of the strongest shinobi's alive made him love traveling more. The young Senju heir glanced at his Uzumaki friend when they were forced to come to a stop due to the gate guards; two plain and otherwise boring shinobi's held up their hands indicating for them to stop.
"Hmm," one of the Gate Guards hummed looking at Ken and Karin through the crowd of Hunter Nin's that surrounded them. "I take it these two here are important guest since you guys brought them back alive." His teeth were pointy and jagged resembling a monster's pair of teeth rather than a human's.
Karin cringed in disgust while Ken looked the laughing gate guard in the eye. "Is that supposed to be a joke? It's more like they didn't want to fight me; this one here was begging me not to kick all of their asses."
The guard stopped laughing and glanced at his partner, "Hey who's this kid…? He looks sort of familiar don't cha think?"
"His name is Ken Senju, go ahead and log him and…" the Hunter ninja who had politely begged Ken not to attack his troops turned towards the uncomfortably shifting redhead.
"Karin Uzumaki," she answered looking at the gate guard.
After scribbling their name's down, he looked Ken in the eye and said, "Enjoy your stay in the Mist, I'm sure someone like you will enjoy yourself here."
'The fuck is he implying, bringing that up?' Ken pondered, staring at the man's sharp toothy smile.
"You guys head back to HQ; I'll personally escort them to the Mizukage Tower. I highly doubt the two of them will cause any trouble within the village." The Hunter Nin's surrounding Ken and Karin Saluted and jumped away, presumably to return to their HQ like they were advised to.
With his comrades gone the unnamed Hunter Ninja who Ken and Karin have gotten the most comfortable around walked through the village gates and said, "Ignore his words Senju… The Mist has changed, we are no longer the Bloody Mist." The Hunter Nin turned to the sinisterly grinning gatekeeper, although hidden beneath a mask his focused glare could be felt by all present. "Come, the Lady Mizukage awaits you two…" he continued through the gate once the Gate guard scoffed and sat down.
Karin glared at the sulking gatekeeper and followed behind Ken and their Hunter Nin friend. She understood the hidden implication behind the Kiri nin's words and had to disagree with the man. Ken wasn't the type of Shinobi who could ever be compared to the bloodthirsty mutts Kirigakure produced in its Bloody Mist Era.

The first thing Ken noticed about the interior of Kiri was that it had houses and buildings built on top of each other, resembling a jigsaw puzzle of houses more so than neighborhoods and functioning streets. The few people who were out and about, strolling the quiet and empty streets looked down-right miserable. Men, women, and children- there was no exception to the sadness and grief clouded atop their heads like the mist that hung directly above the village.
It was clear by the citizen's overwhelmingly ragged clothing and dirtied faces that the majority of the Village was poor. Probably just getting enough funds to get by…
"What happened here?" Karin was the first out of the two to voice their concerns. "I mean, this is Kirigakure; one of the Five Great Ninja Villages right?" it might've come out as harsh, but she was bewildered by the terrible state of the village.
"War happened," their guide said continuing his walk to the giant tower that loomed over the stacking buildings. "We the Pro-Bloodline resistance won, but at a tremendous cost… Follow, we're almost there."
Taking notice of Karin's slightly agape mouth no doubt because she had more questions Ken grabbed her hand and followed after the Hunter Ninja. "Save it for the Mizukage, Karin," he said turning his gaze away from her to the tower that stretched high in the sky, passing the ever-looming cloud of fog. "I've got questions that I want answering as well."
Karin nodded albeit hesitantly- the village was just as bad as her home Kusagakure (Village Hidden in Grass) used to be, but much worst in some ways. The depressing aura resonating from everything for example… Kusa once had a presence of forlorn danger because of the group now known to her as Akatsuki. But if what the Hunter Nin said was true, 'Shouldn't they be overwhelmed with joy at winning the war and electing a new Kage? Why is everyone so sad and miserable when they have no reasonable reason to be?' Her Uzumaki genes were telling her to demand answers, but she also knew that all of her questions could be answered by the woman seated at the top of the tower they were walking towards.

-Mizukage Tower-
When the Hunter Ninja finally came to a stop at what Ken could only assume was the final room and floor to the massive tower that easily dwarfed both the Hokage Tower and Kusakage tower, he let out an annoyed sigh. "Whoever constructed this needs serious mental help…" he grumbled hoping he and Karin's guide heard him. "I mean how many of these floors were empty…?" he added.
Karin shrugged, having lost count at some point.
"Our late Yondaime Mizukage, Yagura-sama; leader of the Anti-Bloodline faction created this tower for who knows what before his death…" the Hunter Ninja stated, knocking his hand on the door. Almost immediately after his knocking did a soft, "Enter," resonate from the other side of the door. The man opened the door allowing Ken and Karin to pass through first.
Ken forced himself not to blush at the attractive woman seated on the other side of the massive room. She was partially hidden by the stacks of paper strewn along her desk, but her adult beauty was still viewable from the green eye peeking past the mountains of paperwork. 'I expected someone like a bear… Kind of like Shizuka's sensei.' He shuddered remembering the muscular Nadeshiko who he had mistaken for a man.
Karin's eye twitched beneath her glasses as Mei's uncovered eye examined Ken. Her frustration shifted into worry when the Mizukage's eye drifted to her. Her green eye crinkled in amusement as her body was filled with the older woman's sizzling hot chakra. Unlike Ken who liked to flex his chakra and power at every given moment, uncaring of the fact, that he was making himself a beacon for anyone looking. The Mizukage seemingly instead preferred to suppress her chakra and then release it whenever looking at others in the eye.
Ken smirked and wrapped his arm around his slightly shaking friend all the while releasing more of his chakra.
"She's quite the sensitive sensor Lady Mizukage-sama," the Hunter Ninja spoke up, neither telling his Kage to stop nor continue.
Seeing Ken's smirk simply widen when she released more of her chakra- all of which was directed at the redhead huddled safely in his arms, Mei muffled her laugh with a raised palm and stopped. "Ken Senju, you pass my test. Congratulations not many men do as well as you." She complimented, pushing some of her work to the side so that her guests could fully see her.
"Obviously," Ken replied hugging Karin closer to him and toning down his chakra some.
Mei looked amused by his confident reply, 'Does he not realize that he's standing before one of the Five Great Kages? Well, I suppose only an arrogant fool would attack not one, but two Daimyo's in the strongest out of the five great shinobi villages.' She mentally said to herself while forcing herself to not release more of her chakra so that she wouldn't terrorize the shaking redhead any further. But she was in luck because a fool such as himself was exactly what she needed right now.
Her gaze drifted to the upper left corner of her ceiling, specifically her right-hand man; Ao.
"Thank you for escorting them here," she spoke turning directly to her Hunter Nin. "Go and rest up, you have a long day ahead of you tomorrow."
The Hunter Nin firmly nodded his masked head and left the room closing the door behind him.
It was quiet until Ken broke the silence by stepping forward- the soles of his unprotected feet clapping against the polished floor. "How come your village looks like shit even though they've got someone like you as its leader?" he asked turning his sights to the ninja hidden in the corner of the room. "Looks like you've got a stalker, Mis…"
Mei's amusement vanished with the wind when he called her Mis. "Aha, that's cute, a fine young man called me Mis," she spat sarcastically. "What's next hag? Ma…? Ma'am?" her formerly bright and amused eyes turned cold.
Karin nodded quickly, too afraid to shout her approval of Mei's self-criticism. 'That's right! You old hussy!' She mentally shouted and pointed mockingly at the… old, yet scary Kage.
"So, what if I think you look like an old bat," Ken answered, not genuinely thinking the woman was ugly. "You gonna answer my question or not? You…" he smiled in entertainment when her eyes glinted, silently daring him to finish. "Hag," he finished just as the room's temperature increased dramatically.
It was like the formerly cool room turned into a full-blown sauna.
A bead of sweat rolled down his face and Karin's slight shaking started up again… 'Good thing she's concentrating her chakra on me instead of Karin.' He thought, refusing to wipe away the sweat forming along his face.
As Mei stood up from her chair, the top of her blue dress that hid her cleavage stretched as though it was on the verge of bursting open. "Why would I answer a question from a troublemaker like yourself Senju…" She licked her lips temptingly and blew out a hot breath of air with her condescending scowl still present on her face. "Go ahead and wipe your face… It's unbefitting of a good looking kid like yourself to stand before a fine lady with such guck on you."
She increased her chakra outage, her intense smirk widening alongside Ken's when he flared his chakra to match hers in both quantity and density.
"K- Ken-kun… It's too hot," Karin gasped taking large gulps of air as more sweat dripped down from her face. 'Am I hallucinating…? Or is that cup melting?' Just as Karin had thought, the small glass cup located directly atop Mei's desk began rapidly melting right before her eyes, quickly forming into a small puddle of liquefied glass.
'Bend to my will foolish Senju heir.' Mei gleefully thought; her smirk now turning into a gleeful and excited grin. Her eyes widened and observed in astonishment as the dark oak wood from her desk sprouted a dozen flowers and patches of grass along its surface.
Just like Karin, Ken took a large gulp of air but continued smirking at Mei. "Kid huh…?" he laughed ignoring the slight sting to his lungs, "I guess to someone as old as yourself I'm still a kid right hag," he laughed again, harder and released more of his chakra when the Kage slowly walked from behind her desk with her face and chakra growing more sinister.
Mei continued her slow walk towards the drenched pair, basking in the feeling of Ken's chakra fighting against her own and causing the ground to pulse and shake under the pressure of their chakras. "You're strong kid, but I think I'll need to train you," she stopped in front of Ken and bent down to look into his glaring eyes. "What do you say? Not just anyone receives private doggy training from a Kage, let alone me…" she blew a kiss his way and went to cup his cheek, only stopping when Ken's chakra exploded much like a devasting Katon (Fire release) jutsu would.
"That's enough Mei-sama, stop provoking the boy," Ao said standing beside his Kage, between them and their two guests was a tree that easily fit in the gigantic room. "You've brought him here to request his services did you not Mei-sama?" he questioned glaring away from the tree to his silent leader.
"…Shut up Ao," the temperature dropped, making Karin lower herself to her knees in relief on the other side of the tree. "Or I'll kill you," she replied in an icy tone, blowing a strand of her reddish auburn hair out of her face.
Ao shuddered at her look and stepped back when the tree sunk into the ground revealing Ken hugging the kneeling redhead with his grin and piercing eyes still staring challengingly at Mei.
"I don't know what you're trying to request from me, but I'm not into kinky dog stuff, plus you're way too old," Ken stated as his palms glowed as green as Mei's narrowed eyes and hovered over Karin's back. "That was fun, but I think I won, Mis Mizukage-sama~"
"Ahaha, I was going easy on you boy," Mei said in a dangerously serious tone, none of the amusement from before present. "I hope you're not looking down on me because I'm a woman little Senju because you couldn't survive a round with me, kid."
"I don't give a damn if you're a girl or not," the tension in the room skyrocketed far above the pressure from just a moment ago. "I'll still kick your ass if you don't tell me why you're village looks the way it does, o'great Mizukage." Ken sneered allowing Karin to turn around and bury her face in his chest as Mei's blistering hot chakra flared out in an effort to match his own.
To him, no one as powerful as Mei had the right to allow her village to look the way it was. It was downright pathetic. Naido was an at best average ranked Jonin shinobi selected into the role by someone who cared not about power but political view, so he had an excuse- albeit a shitty one. But she was selected by the people who were suffering below this ridiculous tower and held tremendous power befitting that of a Kage ranked shinobi, she had no excuse in his opinion.
"I'll burn you alive kid, it'd be such a waste choose your next words carefully."
Ken scoffed at how serious Mei sounded, weren't they just playing a game if whether she could make him hot enough to wipe away his sweat? He shrugged, "Not if I kill you first," he grinned, "Granny."
Just as Mei sped forward with her cheeks immediately filled with boiling hot water and the atmosphere around her sizzling a deep hot red, the door to her office was kicked open and running inside were lines and lines of shinobi each ranging from Chunin to Hunter Nin with their weapons pointed at Ken's turned back.
"M-Mei-sama, Ao-sensei… I- Is everything okay here…? The en-entire village is um-worried?" A tall boy a tad bit older than both Karin and Ken walked through the crowd and shakily bowed to Mei and his sensei. Strapped on his back was a massive oddly shaped sword with its hilt sticking over his back.
Mei continued glaring at Ken with her lips just an inch away from his wood encased fist. She contemplating finishing what she started but decided to back off after she saw Ken's narrowed and dangerous eyes drift down to her breast. 'Hmm, no way he could seriously view me as a granny if he was just looking at my boobs… I guess I'll let him live for a little bit longer, maybe I can seduce him with my womanly charm and maybe marry him! Hohoho.' she smirked and laughed to herself.
"Chojuro!" Ao snapped angrily, breaking Mei from her dreams of marrying a nice young man who happened to look like the missing ninja glaring at her. "Can't you all see that Mei-sama was in an important meeting! Straighten your back like a real man and leave, I've got everything covered here right Mei-sama…" he trailed off as he felt Mei's menacing eyes glaring at him.
"Ao," Mei warned narrowing her eyes on the eye-patch wearing man.
"I'm surprised these people came to your rescue despite how much of a mess you let this village become," Ken berated Mei turning his attention to Karin when she picked herself out of his arms and sent a confused look at the armed Kiri ninjas.
"Oh, would you stop being so obscure," Mei huffed at Ken with a vein throbbing on her head, she fixed her dress before sighing and turning to her gathered shinobi. "I don't know why you continue to mock my status and work as Kage of my village, but it ends now Senju. There are things that you aren't aware of which corresponds as to why Kirigakure is the way it is."
Ken scowled at the beautiful Kage but didn't speak.
"Ken…" Karin grabbed his attention. "These shinobi," she pointed at them all. "All of their chakras are radiating a deep sense of care, and respect, and admiration for her. I think we're wrong about her… I think the state of the village isn't on her entirely."
Mei nodded at Karin, curious about how the young woman was able to read the chakra of her ninjas. "You all may go now," she shooed her underlings away with her hand. "It seemed me and the Senju merely had a silly misunderstanding. Chojuro you can stay." After the rest of the Kiri ninja's left closing the door behind them, she turned around to Karin and smiled thankfully at the redhead. "You're right about this not being entirely my fault…"
"Then who's fault is it?" Ken asked, his face slightly irate at how bipolar the Mizukage's mood was changing. He stood up along with Karin leaning securely against his cloaked frame. As he saw it, it could only be her and her fault alone. He stealthily willed away the clone stationed in the base of the wall and floor, determining that he and Mei's battle of wills was over.
Mei sighed and turned around looking at the fog that covered the entirety of the top of her village from a window. She looked at something that Ken and Karin couldn't see, visions of blood coloring the mist red, of former comrades cutting each other down over opposing views, of war between the Anti-bloodline alliance and the Pro-bloodline alliance. They; the pro-bloodline alliance won, but at the cost of several thousands of shinobi and civilians…
"When we recaptured the village from Yagura's clutches and slayed him in battle we had thought that everything would go back to normal… That we could put the days of the Bloody Mist and now our revolution behind us, but we were naïve to think that people would just forgive and forget…" she turned around and looked at the two, "Every day both surviving member's of the Anti and Pro bloodline parties have to live with the knowledge that their neighbor is responsible for the death of a Lover, a Friend, a Brother, a Daughter, a Mother, Father… the list goes on, unfortunately…"
Karin grimaced, finding Mei's words saddening. That explained why everybody, even the young children were so miserable and sad. But she felt like there was more…
"And what have you done to help them?" Ken asked crossing his arms. He, just like Karin found Mei's story to be troubling, but she was their leader. She was the one who they had trusted and ensured their happiness with. It was her responsibility to secure them the happy ending they all deserved.
Mei, much to Karin, Chojuro, and Ao's surprise, she let a small womanly giggle escape from her lush and full lips. "Yes, you're right Ken, it is my job as their Kage to help them and I swear upon the names of all of my predecessors that I have…" she smiled depressingly at Ken, her green eyes staring into Ken's naturally narrowed purple eyes. She enjoyed the way his eyes stared through her, seemingly right into her soul and heart. If he kept looking at her like that- her heart rate began speeding up.
"Ahem," Karin coughed into her balled-up fist with her cheek rubbing almost possessively against Ken's. "As you were saying…" the redhead said with her glare focused jealously on Mei's massive chest. 'Can't have any more BIGGER girls- let alone old women to sink their claws into Ken-kun! At least with Naruto-baka, I can compete.'
Mei smiled at Karin and shook her head, although she did have this strange feeling to hit the girl… She wondered why. "Anyways, it's sort of hard to assist my villagers with getting past those hard times without any actual support from our Nation's Daimyo, Raiser Otama. You see he was a firm supporter of the former Mizukage; the one we killed and usurped the village from." Her smile widened hoping Ken would get what she was hinting at. As a Kage, she couldn't possibly attack a Daimyo despite how cruelly they were treating her and her village. She would lose the respect of her villagers and fellow Kages.
But a young ruthless missing ninja who was already known for attacking Daimyo's could.
"…" Ken glared at Mei. He wanted her to say it. To say that she wanted him to assassinate this man to free her village from this endless fog of misfortune they somehow had gotten lost within.
"Have you tried asking nicely?" Karin offered.
Mei looked at Ao and shared a sad smile with the man. Karin's words were cute and were said with the intention of helping but were utterly irrational and naïve. Of course, she's asked, begged, hell she's even offered her own body and life up to the pompous brat, but each of her self-deprecating offers was denied vehemently by the young Daimyo. She was insulted by his denial considering the way the kid behaved behind closed doors, but was ultimately filled more so with distress and anguish at once again another failure.
Their village's main source of income came in the form of hunting down missing ninja's who ventured into their lands and waters. She would've issued Ken's capture and personally killed him, had his name been sketched into their bingo books. But again, the Daimyo denied Ken's name from being issued into their Land's Bingo books.
"The boy is more trouble than worth, don't you think Mizukage-hime?"
Mei's head rang at the remembrance of the handsome young Daimyo's voice. He was totally her type, charming, charismatic, tall, and young, but beneath all of that was a spoiled brat who spent his days being an arrogant playboy wasting away his late father's income.
"Yes, Mei-sama has attempted reason's with Daimyo Raiser-sama, but all attempts have resulted in failure young woman," Ao spoke up, answering for his Kage.
"Hn," Ken grunted like an Uchiha, "If that's all then I've got one more question for you before me and Karin leave this dump."
Karin gulped when Ken pulled her closer to him and glared at the distraught Mizukage. 'Is he seriously not going to help her even though she clearly needs it? That this village clearly needs it?' She asked herself looking into Ken's eyes.
They oozed irritation as though he was waiting on something.
"What do you know about my partner's location?" The Senju glared at her perplexed expression. "Haku of the Yuki clan… where is he, surely you and your highly skilled Hunter Ninja's know of his general location. Hurry up and spill it out, I don't have all day you know." He demanded whilst glaring at Chojuro when he shifted uncomfortably and slightly moved his hand for his kunai pouch.
Chojuro froze and lowered his hand back down, trying to forget the surge of killing intent Ken sent at him.
Ao merely shook his head in disappointment and looked at Mei, curious to how she was going to respond.
Karin's face brimmed in excitement awaiting Mei's answer, hoping that her harem would be completely reunited soon. Kami she's missed Haku and his kind smile. It was crazy when she thought about how she had truly only spent not even half a year with Ken and Haku but cherished the two of them so much to where that she would leave her mother and chase halfway across the world for them. Finding Ken was easy for a sensor as powerful and sensitive as herself, but Haku on the other hand was a wholly different challenge considering he was more ninja-like stealthier than Ken.
"Ahh, Haku-kun…" Mei sighed disappointedly. "Yes, he is reported alongside you within your article in the bingo books distributed outside of Kiri. Haku-kun is an S-class missing ninja here in the Land of water so yes, I do know of his general location considering how dangerous he and his present company is." Mei paused in thought.
Ken sensed a, "But," coming.
"But…"
He shook his head and sighed already knowing what she was going to request from him. He was impressed with Haku's bounty ranking and a-tad bit jealous if he was being honest.
"I want you to do something for me-"
"Fine I'll save your village for you like the hero I am," Ken smirked with his eyes still narrowed and his chakra flaring around him and Karin…. Overall, he looked more like a villain with his rotten expression and the smug smirk he wore, but no-one was going to say anything to dampen his mood.
Karin and Mei smiled whereas Chojuro face faulted- 'This is going to be my village's savior!?'
"In many ways, you're very much like your article in the bingo book describes you as. Arrogant, foolish, and powerful… But what it doesn't say is how admirable, upright, and how great of a husband you could make a certain lucky girl," Mei smiled at the boy who was young enough to be her son. If only he was a tad bit older… She'd let him go this time, but in a few more years if the blushing and fidgeting redhead didn't sink her claws into him, he was fair game.
Ken's sinister-looking smirk grew, "I'm a tad bit confused about you as well Mei." He ignored how Karin looked at him with a betrayed expression and teary eyes.
"Hoh…? First names already? Lucky me," Mei playfully raised her hand to her mouth and smiled at Ken.
"Yeah, you and the rest of the Kages will one day be my underlings after all so you might as well get used to it." Mei raised a brow at Ken's proclamation but didn't make a move to refute his bold claim. "Your age… Just like how you're confused about my characteristics I'm confused about your age Mei."
Ken dodged to the right-leaning against a scared and shaking in fear Chojuro when a molten ball of lava; strangely familiar to that of a certain bloodthirsty Iwa kunoichi launched at him.
"Mei-sama, your office!" Ao shouted pointing to the scorched ground next to a pale Karin. "You must learn to control that anger of yours," he shook his head in disappointment. "I swear this is why you'll never get married…" He shuddered feeling Death himself- or herself stare at him. "I'm sorr-sorry Mei-sama," he offered his apologies.
"Ao," Mei said advancing closer to her most trusted ninja completely forgetting that Ken was the one to initially call upon her rage. "Ao grab that apprentice of yours and escort our guest to the perimeter of Water Daimyo Raiser's palace. Don't be sighted no matter what, this is an SS-rank mission do not fail me, or I will kill you" She ordered glaring into his eye.
Ao nodded and performed a body flicker after yelling, "Meet me at the village gates in ten!"
"So, if we kill…" Karin struggled, "If we kill your country's Daimyo you'll tell us about where Haku-kun is?" She wasn't expecting to have to do something as vile as an assassination in order to see her friend again, but it was Haku, so she was willing.
Mei's gaze softened seeing how she had used the girl's affection against her but forced that thought out of her mind. Her village's happiness came before something like honor- they were shinobi after all. "Yes, you assassinate the Daimyo; Raiser Otama and I'll disclose Haku-kun's location to you two. And if you choose not to take the mission that's fine but remember the Land of Water is vast and filled with many hostile villages and even more scattered islands within it."
Karin gulped but still nodded, nonetheless.
"Tch, we were going to do it anyway, I already swore to save this dump," Ken said with his arm slung over Chojuro's shoulders. "Just get Haku's location nice and ready for us when we come back."
Mei nodded and watched as Ken, Karin, and a nervous Chojuro left her office. She made her way over to her flower covered desk and looked at a document that had the name of a specific organization titled on it; the Akatsuki. "Looks like I don't have to use you expensive mercenaries anymore, now that my Knight in shining armor appeared," she sighed happily whilst ripping the document in two.
End
An: I enjoyed writing out the dynamics between Mei and Ken :) I hope you liked the update take care. Ken is still a ninja who values the happiness of the people above all else, willing to dirty his hands to do so. Also sorry for adding another Oc (Ugh…. I truthfully loathe them) but trust me it's not going too last long.
So just in case, I don't blame you if you forget their name's considering all but one are minor Oc's. (I wish Kishi would've expanded upon the Daimyo's more so than he did in canon...smh)
Kenji Shijimi- Fire Daimyo/Ken's grandfather, (Arrogant and most powerful out of all the Daimyo's who enjoy's toying with others)
Yamauichi- Earth Daimyo, (Cowardly and snarky, used Akatsuki to kill Naido)
Raiser Otama- Water Daimyo (Asshole Playboy who backed Yagura during Bloodline Revolt)
