Drew finished his spelling worksheet and pushed it to the side. He folded his arms and put his head on the table.
"Head up, just cause you're done with school doesn't mean you can sleep," Trudy said.
Drew groaned and sat up, "Why?"
"Being suspended is sort of like being arrested. It's not meant to be fun," Trudy passed him a bucket of pens, "Sort these. Black pens in one pile, blue in another, then red, and then if there's any other colors you can sort those out too."
Drew sighed and moved onto his knees, "You make me sort stuff a lot."
"It's an easy job," Trudy shrugged.
"It's a boring job," Drew mumbled.
Trudy raised her eyebrows, "Are you being sassy?"
Drew blushed and ignored her.
"That's what I thought," Trudy nodded and turned back to the computer.
Hailey walked down the stairs carrying Drew's lunch box, "Hungry?"
"Yes," Drew ran around the desk and grabbed his lunch, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Hailey watched him go back to his table then leaned against the front desk, "How's it going?"
"It's even more boring than yesterday," Drew said.
Hailey smiled slightly at Trudy, "Good. What are you learning?"
"That the police department is the most boring place on earth," Drew opened his lunch box.
Trudy shook her head, "That's not true, I'm just making it boring for you."
Drew shrugged and looked through his food, "No dessert again?"
"What did Dad say yesterday?" Hailey asked.
Drew blushed, "Criminals don't get cookies."
"Exactly," Hailey nodded.
Jay came down the stairs, "Hailey, ready?"
Drew's eyes widened, "Where are you going?"
"We're going to go get lunch," Jay said.
Drew gasped, "That's not fair! Yesterday you ate with me."
"And today we're going out to eat," Jay leaned over the desk, "Be good for Sergeant Trudy."
Drew groaned, "I want to go."
"Make better choices then we'll talk," Jay hit the desk lightly, "See you."
"Be back soon," Hailey waved and walked out with Jay.
Trudy looked at Drew, "Am I not fun enough for you?"
"You used to be fun until you started punishing me," Drew said.
"Your parents said this isn't a punishment, remember? It's discipline," Trudy sat down, "Want to tell me about that, though?"
"What do you want to know?" Drew pulled his sandwich out of the bag.
"Well, why are they using the word discipline?" Trudy asked.
"Punishment's when you're hit," Drew bit into his sandwich and shoved his straw into his juice box, "And my mom and dad said they will never hit me."
Trudy slowly nodded, "Where'd you learn that?"
"Dr. Charles taught me," Drew opened his bag of grapes, "Do you want to share any of this?"
"No," Trudy said softly, "Thank you though."
Drew nodded and continued eating his sandwich. Trudy sighed watching him and shook her head before turning back to the computer.
Drew paced in front of Trudy's desk, "Why aren't they back yet?"
"They had to go make a stop for work," Trudy said, "You're going to run a rut into my floor, get back here."
Drew kicked the ground and walked back behind the desk, "Fine." He sat at his table and played with his pencil.
"Hey," Trudy reached under the desk and found her bowl of candy, "Come here."
Drew looked up and smiled, "What's that?"
"Candy," Trudy said and shook the bowl, "What do you like?"
Drew hurried over to her and picked out a sucker, "Cherry's the best."
"It's decent," Trudy put the bowl away, "Don't tell your mom and dad."
"Like a secret?" Drew threw the wrapper out and put the sucker in his mouth.
"Exactly," Trudy nodded, "You're being good though and are a big help."
"Thanks," Drew smiled and sat down.
"Here's your next task," Trudy grabbed a piece of paper from the printer, "Connect all the dots."
Drew's eyes widened at the paper, "Whoa."
"Goes up to 200, so good luck," Trudy slid a pencil closer to him.
"I'll try," Drew nodded and started working on it.
A few minutes later, Jay and Hailey walked through the front door and Trudy said, "Drew, look who's here."
Drew's head shot up and he smiled around his sucker, "You're back!" He ran around the desk and stopped in front of Jay.
"Hey, what's that?" Jay lightly touched the end of the stick in his mouth.
"Oh," Drew looked at Trudy and pulled the sucker out, "Sorry."
Trudy sighed, "It's okay."
"Toss it out," Jay nodded toward the garbage can, "You know you're not allowed candy or desserts this week."
Drew grumbled and walked over to drop the sucker in the garbage.
Hailey stepped forward and put her hand out, "Come here."
Drew looked at her and his eyes widened, "You're hurt. We need to call Uncle Will."
Hailey smiled slightly and touched the side of her face, "It's okay, just a scrape. Dad already took care of it."
"Let me see," Trudy waved her over, "What'd you do?"
"Just had to jump on the guy to make him stop," Hailey said softly, "Gravel didn't agree with me."
Trudy nodded and bent under the desk. She stood with a form and handed it to her, "Fill this out."
Hailey sighed, "Trudy, come on."
"It's the rules," Trudy shook her head, "It'll only take a few minutes."
Hailey ran a hand through her hair and walked upstairs.
"Are you sure Mom's okay?" Drew asked Jay.
"Yeah," Jay breathed, "What about you? Have you been good?"
Drew nodded quickly, "That's why Sergeant Trudy gave me the sucker."
Jay smiled and squeezed his shoulder, "Come on, you can come sit with Mom and I upstairs while we work."
"Yes," Drew whispered and packed up his things, "Thanks for hanging out with me Sergeant Trudy."
Trudy laughed softly, "You're welcome."
"I'll probably be back tomorrow," Drew said and put his backpack on.
Jay chuckled, "You definitely will be."
"It'll be the last day though," Drew walked with Jay up the stairs.
"Hopefully, do you plan on getting suspended again?" Jay held the gate open for Drew.
"Never," Drew blushed.
"Mom and I are still disappointed in you," Jay said.
"I know," Drew mumbled and slowed down.
"But," Jay stopped on the stairs and squatted down, "We still love you, remember?"
"I know," Drew rubbed his eyes.
Jay kissed the top of his head and stood up, "Did you finish your school work for the day?"
"Yeah," Drew adjusted his backpack, "Sergeant Trudy was going to have me do a connect-the-dots."
"All right, you can keep doing that," Jay walked Drew to his desk. He pulled a chair over, "Sit here."
"Hi Mom," Drew said while sitting down.
"Hi sweetheart," she smiled.
Drew pulled out his connect-the-dots, "What happened to your face then? Are you sure Dad fixed you?"
"Don't worry about it," Hailey said.
"I worry about a lot of things," Drew grabbed a pencil from Jay's desk.
"And you really don't have to," Jay sat down.
"No, I do," Drew shook his head, "If I don't worry, who will?"
"Worrying is something for parents to do, not kids," Hailey set her hand on Drew's, "Okay?"
"I'm not going to accept that," Drew pulled his hand away, "Why don't you have a band-aid on your face?"
"Because it's my face and it's just a scrape," Hailey used her phone as a mirror, "It's not that bad."
"It's really red," Drew leaned over.
"It's fine," Hailey turned back to her computer, "Do your work."
Drew sighed and looked to Jay, "Dad."
"She's okay, bud," Jay said and tapped Drew's paper, "Work on this."
Drew rolled his eyes and looked down at the paper, "Both of my parents have hurt faces. How is that okay?"
Jay and Hailey made eye contact. Hailey shook her head and ran her hand through her hair. Jay sighed and went back to work.
The next day, Drew finally cracked and cried the entire drive to the district.
"It's H-Halloween and I can't even go to the p-party," he sobbed in the backseat.
Hailey bit her lip and looked at Jay.
He sighed and tightened his hold on the steering wheel, "It'll be okay."
"It won't," Drew cried, "Why? Why did this have to happen to me?"
"You'll still go trick-or-treating tonight," Hailey said, "That's not going to change."
"Even though I'm a horrible child?" Drew scratched his arms.
"You are not a horrible child," Hailey reached back and rubbed his leg, "Deep breaths."
"Plus, you have that awesome costume to show off tonight," Jay said.
"And you're going with Cara, won't that be fun?" Hailey smiled.
"We won't even match!" Drew hit his legs, "She's being a pink dog! That's not even real!"
"But you'll be nice to her, right?" Hailey squeezed his knee.
"Yeah, otherwise I'll be kicked out," Drew cried.
"You will never be kicked out," Jay said.
Drew hid his face into his jacket and kicked his legs.
Jay parked the truck and got out, opening the back door to lift Drew out. Drew wrapped his arms around his neck and cried into his shoulder.
"I know, bud, it's hard," Jay rubbed his back and walked inside with Hailey.
Kevin stopped on the stairs and looked at them, "Oh no. There can't be tears on Halloween. What's going on?"
"He's upset that he's not at the Halloween party," Hailey said softly.
Kevin nodded and held the gate open for them, "I'm sorry, little man."
The walked into the bullpen and Adam looked up from his computer with Vanessa, "Hey, what's wrong?"
Jay just shook his head and carried Drew to the break room. He sat on the couch and tried peeling Drew's coat off of him, "Come on, bud, you're getting too warm. Help me out."
Hailey dropped his backpack at her desk and walked in, closing the door behind her, "Maybe we should take him home."
"Hailey, it's Halloween, you know how busy it gets around here," Jay said.
"Yeah, but…" she sighed and sat next to him, "Jay, he's seven and it was just one hit."
Jay raised his eyebrow, "Who are you?"
"Look at him," Hailey rubbed Drew's back, "Maybe-"
"Hailey," Jay shook his head, "Don't finish that right now."
She took a deep breath and nodded, "Drew, can you talk to us please?"
He shook his head and curled up further against Jay.
Hailey stared at Jay with big eyes and mouthed 'Please.'
"No," Jay whispered.
Hailey pouted and grabbed his arm.
Jay rolled his eyes and stood with Drew, "Come on, bud, I know you're super bummed, but we can still have fun."
Hank walked in, "I heard someone was having a bad day."
"Yeah," Jay breathed, "Drew, Sergeant Hank's here."
"I-I know," Drew hiccupped and cried quietly into Jay's shirt.
"Hey, how long have you been crying?" Hank asked.
Drew sniffled, "A while."
"Okay, come with me then," Hank said.
"W-What?" Drew turned to look at him.
"You're coming with me," Hank nodded toward the door, "Let's go."
Jay loosened his grip enough for Drew to slide down to the ground. He rubbed his eyes and slowly walked over.
Hank set a hand on his shoulder and walked him away.
"Should we be worried?" Hailey asked while watching them leave.
"I don't know," Jay sighed and turned toward her, "What the hell though? You were the one so pissed that he got suspended in the first place and now you want to give in to him?"
"It's Halloween," Hailey set her hand on his arm, "We can't be monsters."
"That's the whole point of Halloween," Jay joked.
Hailey rolled her eyes, "He's having a bad enough day as it is, we can't make it worse for him."
"And we will make it up to him tonight, but right now he needs to understand what he did was wrong," Jay said.
"Now you're thinking that?" Hailey crossed her arms.
"What do you mean?" Jay countered.
"I mean that you're the reason we're in this situation in the first place," Hailey stepped closer to him.
Jay sighed, "That may be, so that's the reason I want to make sure he learns his lesson."
Hailey watched him for a minute before asking softly, "Which holiday was it?"
Jay's eyes widened, "What?"
"Which holiday was traumatizing for you?" Hailey sat back down on the couch, "You've clearly got some weird beef with continuing to go hardcore with his punishment on a holiday, so what happened?"
Jay shook his head and looked away.
"See, for me it was Valentine's Day," Hailey said, "My mom showed up to school to help with the party and had a black eye. I went home with her and felt bold from the sugar rush and laid into my dad – me, a little ten year-old girl thought she could stand up to her dad who just beat her mom the night before. He yelled and yelled and threw out all my cards and candy because I was disrespectful and didn't deserve it," she shrugged, "So what was it? What was your tipping point that scarred you enough to use it as your parenting reference?"
Jay swallowed and sat next to her, "I'm sorry that happened."
"I got over it," Hailey said softly, "A couple guys taught me that Valentine's Day can have better memories."
Jay laughed and looked at her, "You really think that making me jealous will make me spill my childhood trauma?"
"Hey, I never said you weren't one of those guys," Hailey smiled.
Jay nodded and nudged his shoulder against hers, "Sure."
"Come on," Hailey set a hand on his knee, "What happened to you?"
Jay chuckled and shook his head, "Easter. I was little, maybe like five or six? I don't know, I did something stupid-"
"Is it really stupid if you're five or six?" Hailey asked.
Jay shrugged, "It's what my dad always said. Anyways, I wasn't allowed to go visit the Easter bunny and was told I was too 'bad' that year and wasn't given any Easter baskets."
"Ouch," Hailey breathed.
"It sounds dumb now since I'm old, but it just always stuck with me," Jay said and rubbed his hand over his face, "Guess I'm rubbing that off onto Drew."
Hailey sighed, "Let's be honest though, it's not really our choice to take him out of school. We were told he couldn't go."
Jay nodded and stared ahead.
Hailey slipped her hand in his, "You might have taught him how to fight, but it's not fair of me to say you're the reason he's even in this position. We've said since the beginning that school was going to be hard."
Jay squeezed her hand, "So what do we do?"
Hailey rested her head on his shoulder, "I don't know."
Jay kissed the top of her hair and carefully stood, "Let's go find him."
Hailey breathed out and stood, "Okay."
They walked around the district until they heard loud banging noises from the garage.
"If he's in the cage, I swear to god," Jay started running down the stairs.
"Don't be dramatic," Hailey said under her breath, but still quickly followed him.
They paused at the bottom of the stairs to see Drew hitting the cage with a plank of wood.
"What the hell's going on?" Jay asked.
"He's getting out aggression," Hank said without looking over.
Drew smacked the wood again and it broke in half. He panted and picked up another piece.
"No, no," Jay hurried over and grabbed it from his hand, "You're going to get hurt."
"He's fine," Hank took the wood and passed it back to Drew, "Continue."
Drew nodded and went back to hitting the wood against the metal.
"Hank, is this really the right choice?" Jay asked.
"Is he crying or scratching?" Hank glanced at him, "Sometimes parenting means letting them destroy crap."
Hailey sighed as Drew threw the piece of wood and picked up another piece, "Fine."
"Hailey," Jay spun around.
She shrugged, "He's not doing anything wrong."
"I like this," Drew grunted and held the wood over his head before banging it against the cage.
Hank nodded and looked to Jay, "Go to work, Halstead. I've got him."
Jay breathed out and watched Drew obliterate the piece of wood, "Okay. Thank you." He turned and followed Hailey back up to the bullpen.
Hank spent the entire shift with Drew down in the garage and behind the building breaking things, so when they walked back into the building, Hailey was relieved to finally see her son again.
She pulled him against her, "How are you? Feeling better?"
Drew nodded and wrapped his arms around her middle, "Sergeant Hank's a lot of fun."
Jay smiled slightly and looked at Hank, "Thank you."
"I hope you both got a lot done," Hank nodded and walked upstairs.
"Let's go in here for a minute," Hailey led Drew to the side office.
Jay closed the door and leaned against it, "We know you're upset that you couldn't be at your Halloween party today-"
"It's okay," Drew interrupted him, "I think I did something better than the party."
Hailey raised her eyebrows, "Really?"
"Yeah," Drew nodded, "Sergeant Hank let me break stuff and he gave me candy and bought me pizza."
"Some of your favorite things," Jay breathed.
Drew smiled, "I had fun. He let me talk about stuff too. He told me he's made bad decisions and so did you two."
Hailey bit her lip, "We've all made mistakes."
Drew took a deep breath, "This was a mistake."
"A big one," Jay moved to squat in front of him, "That Mom and I don't want you to ever repeat. Did you learn that this week?"
"Yes," Drew nodded quickly, "I promise."
Jay stood and put his hands on Drew's shoulders, "We expect a lot out of you, but if you ever mess up, that's not going to change how much we love you."
Hailey smiled and set her hand on Drew's back, "And that's our promise to you."
Drew smiled back at her, "Okay."
"Should we go home and get ready for trick-or-treating?" Jay asked and picked up Drew's backpack.
"Wait, let me show you something," Drew grabbed his backpack and pulled a folded piece of paper from the front pocket, "Sergeant Hank made me write this." He passed the paper to Hailey and stood up on his tiptoes to read it along with her.
Hailey laughed softly and read it out loud, "Dear Brandon, I'm sorry I hit you. Maybe if you weren't disrespectful this wouldn't have happened. We all make mistakes. I'm sorry again. Drew."
Jay held back a laugh and shook his head.
"I like it," Drew smiled, "It's honest."
"Brutally," Hailey nodded.
"At least I said sorry," Drew said.
"Yeah," Jay chuckled, "At least you did that."
"Okay, look at me, look here," Kim said and waved her hand, "Cara, eyes on me."
"Drew," Hailey snapped her fingers, "Look here."
"Mom, there's a cardinal," Drew pointed.
"Very cool, but let me get a picture of you and Cara," Hailey said.
Adam hit Jay's arm, "Remember when we used to blackout on Halloween?"
"I never did that," Jay chuckled.
"Oh come on," Adam said, "You never partied on Halloween?"
"I'm not really the dressing up type," Jay shrugged and smirked.
"You don't have to dress up to drink," Adam laughed.
"It's a key part of Halloween," Jay shook his head.
Adam rolled his eyes, "Eh whatever. I think I was a junior in high school and my friends and I-"
"Don't finish that," Kim looked behind her shoulder, "I'd rather not hear it."
Jay laughed, "Busted."
"Mhmm, tell you later," Adam whispered.
"Okay," Hailey sighed and straightened up, "I think we got the best we could." She walked over to Drew and straightened the fake medals around his neck, "Sure you're okay with wearing these all night?"
Drew nodded, "They're not heavy. Real medals would be super heavy."
"Have fun," Hailey kissed the top of his head, "And," she tilted his chin up to look him in the eyes, "You do not run, understand? Dad needs to see you at all times. If you get excited or scared, I don't care, you do not run from Dad."
Jay walked to set a hand on her back, "I'll keep my eyes on him."
Hailey turned to look at him, "You better. I can't-"
"I know," Jay said softly and hugged her, "We'll be okay, promise," he ran his hand over her hair and whispered, "We both have our guns."
Hailey closed her eyes and nodded, "Thank you."
"Can we go yet?" Cara bounced on her feet.
"Yes," Kim hugged her tightly, "Be good for Adam."
"I will, I will," Cara quickly hugged her back then ran to Adam and grabbed his hand, "Let's go!"
Jay held his hand out to Drew, "Are you ready?"
Drew nervously smiled and nodded, "Ready."
Cara dragged her feet and whined, "I'm so tired."
"My bag's pretty heavy," Drew said quietly.
"Hey, come on you two," Adam put his hands on their shoulders, "It's Halloween! We're staying out all night."
"All night?" both kids asked.
Jay laughed, "It's only been an hour."
"An hour's a long time when you're five, Mr. Jay," Cara said.
"When you're seven too," Drew nodded.
Adam smiled and nodded his head down the street, "If we turn this way we can get back to your house within half an hour and you'll have lots more candy."
"Adam, can you please carry me?" Cara asked.
"Only if you give me all your almond joys," Adam picked her up.
"Done," Cara sighed and rested her head on his shoulder, "I don't even know what that is, but I'll do it."
"Dad?" Drew grabbed Jay's hand.
Jay smiled, "Yeah, come here," he lifted Drew around onto his back, "I've got you."
"Thank you," Drew wrapped his arms around Jay's neck.
Kim finished her beer and passed Hailey her phone, "What about this one?"
Hailey laughed at the onesie designed like a doctor's scrubs, "Will will love it."
"Add to cart," Kim giggled and pressed the button.
Hailey smiled and drank the last sip of her own drink before setting her empty bottle next to Kim's, "How many outfits do we have now?"
"Outfits, not sure," Kim said, "But we have eighty-two items in the cart."
Hailey laughed, "Jay won't like that."
Kim waved her hand, "Jay-Shmay, whatever."
Hailey slid down on the couch, "I can't wait to hold my baby."
"He's going to be the cutest baby," Kim said and set her phone on the coffee table, "A little Jay and Hailey baby."
"He won't look like either of us," Hailey sighed.
"He'll learn from you both though," Kim smiled, "He'll have Jay's decent personality and your determination."
Hailey laughed and shook her head, "Be nice to my husband."
"I can't wait to call Adam my husband," Kim shifted to sit in a similar position to Hailey.
"It's weird at first," Hailey said softly, "But it feels so good to say it."
"Should I change my name?" Kim asked.
"Do you have any animosity toward your father?" Hailey asked.
Kim shrugged, "No."
"Then you don't really need to," Hailey breathed, "I couldn't wait to separate myself from that man and connect myself to the only one that matters."
Kim turned her head to look at her, "Your dad screwed you up."
"Screwed a lot of people up," Hailey said.
The doorbell rang and Kim pushed up off the couch, "Coming!" She stepped over Hailey's legs and grabbed the bowl of candy on her way to the door. She smiled at the sight on the other side of the screen, "Hey!"
"Trick-or-treat," Adam and Jay said.
Kim laughed and pushed the door open for them, "What's going on?"
Adam stepped in with a sleepy Cara in his arms, "Someone poo-pooed on us a little bit ago."
Jay walked in behind him and lowered Drew to the ground, "Where's Hailey?"
Hailey sat up on the couch, "Over here."
Drew rubbed his eyes and walked over to her with a small smile on his face, "I got a lot of candy."
"Let me see," Hailey smiled and moved the beer bottles to the sides of the coffee table.
Jay chuckled and grabbed the empties, "You two had fun tonight."
Hailey blushed and held back a smile.
Drew dumped his candy out onto the table, "Oh man!"
"I'll take that," Jay grabbed a kit-kat and fell onto the couch next to Hailey.
"Can I eat some candy?" Cara mumbled as she became more awake.
Adam laughed, "You were falling asleep back there, now you want candy?"
Cara nodded and sat on the ground to dump her bag on the floor.
"What are we ever going to do with all of that?" Kim asked while siting on the stairs.
Hailey looked over and smiled, "I'd say you two cleared out the neighborhood."
"That's not how it works," Drew said while sorting his candy, "Only one piece per person, Mom."
"Yeah, Mom," Jay winked and opened a bag of M&Ms.
"Stop eating his candy," Hailey laughed and shoved his arm.
"I think there's such thing as a parent tax," Jay tossed the candy into his mouth.
"I completely agree," Adam bent down and picked up an almond joy, "Care-Bear, these are what I want."
"I don't know," Cara giggled and opened a snickers bar.
"Only two pieces," Kim held up two fingers.
"Maybe," Cara shrugged and laid on her stomach to continue looking through her candy.
Drew sighed, "I have so many reese's peanut butter cups."
Cara rolled over and yelled, "Want to trade?"
"Um, sure," Drew threw one at her, "I want a pixie stick."
"No, no, that's too much sugar," Hailey said.
"Let him eat the sugar," Jay said through the chocolate in his mouth.
Hailey scoffed, "You are unbelievable."
Jay shrugged and kissed the side of her head, "Halloween's fun."
Cara walked over to the couch and handed Drew two pixie sticks, "I don't like the purple ones."
"That's fine," Drew said, "Thanks."
Kim smiled at them then looked to Adam opening another candy bar, "You too? You men."
"We're dads now, we can do anything we want," Adam said and popped the chocolate into his mouth.
Kim rolled her eyes, "Okay."
Hailey rubbed her hands over Jay's back, "Maybe you're getting old and shouldn't be carrying our son on your back around the block."
"Don't even joke about me being old," Jay said and looked over her shoulder, "That's not funny."
Hailey smiled and bent down to kiss his nose, "Sorry."
Jay sighed and put his head back down on the pillow, "My stomach kind of hurts too."
"Maybe because you ate more candy than both Cara and Drew combined," Hailey said.
Jay groaned and covered his head with her pillow.
"I'll get you a bottle of water," Hailey rubbed her hand down his back one last time before getting out of bed and going into the hallway. She noticed a light coming through Drew's door so she quietly walked over to it. She leaned against the door and held her breath.
"I can't wait, Rex, we're going to be a family…It'll be so fun…I know! I'm so lucky…We're so lucky!...Good point, Rexy."
Hailey covered her mouth over her smile and stepped away from the door…Drew might consider himself lucky, but she knew she and Jay were even luckier.
A/N: Wow that was way longer than I was expecting, but I like it and I hope you do too!
