A/N: This is yet another reader suggested prompt! Thank you camiladiazib for the song suggestion. They didn't request a particular type of story so I let my imagination go free and this is what I came up with. I hope you and everyone else likes it! I have played with the canon Warbler's ships a bit and whatnot but I also saw a great opportunity to write my second favorite ship (Niff) and couldn't resist!
Song: Girls/Girls/Boys: Panic! At the Disco
Lyrics: "I don't wanna hear you've got a boyfriend, sometimes you're better off alone. But, if you change your mind you know where to find me." "Never did I think that I would be caught in the way you've got me."
Summary: Kurt thought he found his soulmate in Blaine Anderson. The boy was dapper, sweet, and
Rating: T- Just a basic T rating this time around for general teenage situations. I don't see anything that obviously needs TW but if you see anything let me know I'll make an edit to include it.
"That's the end of it!" Kurt put the last box down on his side of the room and looked over to see Blaine smirking at him. "What?"
"Nothing…" Blaine looked back down at his French homework and smiled. "Just you." Kurt smiled to himself and turned around so that his new roommate wouldn't see the blush creeping up his face. He would be lying if he said he wasn't completely and utterly enamored by Blaine Anderson.
It was only a few weeks ago that the curly-haired lead singer had dragged him down the Dalton hallways and introduced him to this incredible new world, and he couldn't be more grateful if he tried. He finally felt safe and free to be himself and it was completely thanks to Blaine's kind and caring nature. Kurt knew he was falling and falling hard… there was just one little problem with that.
"Nick and I were going to go grab some dinner since it's Friday. I know that it's usually our date night but I can probably persuade him to let you join us?" Kurt sighed. That right there was the problem… Nick Duval. Okay, so he wasn't exactly a problem. Nick was nice, a super sweet member of the Warblers with bright eyes and generous a spirit. He lived down the hall in a suite-style room with his friend Jeff (and Thad who was on the council with Wes and David). He was nice enough, but he was also dating Blaine. This meant that no matter how much Kurt felt he was falling in love; the feelings were obviously not mutual.
"I think I'm okay," he answered to Blaine's obnoxiously adorable puppy dog eyes. "You two go have a nice night, I'm just gonna… relax here. It's been a rough day."
"I get it." Blaine closed his French book and crossed the room to put a comforting hand on his roommate's shoulder. "It took me a while when I first got here. You'll find your place soon, I promise."
Kurt could only nod and throw himself down on his bed. He spent the next hour watching as Blaine finished his homework and got ready for his night out. His breath caught in his throat as the shorter boy stripped out of his white uniform shirt to replace it with a heather grey t-shirt that just clung to his chest in all the right places.. "Looks okay right?" He nervously laughed and rubbed the back of his neck.
Kurt nodded. "It's perfect." Blaine shot him a thousand-watt smile before disappearing out the door and down the hall. Kurt sat the rest of the night, tears streaming down his face.
Jeff slammed his lunch tray down on the table causing Kurt to jump, before sliding into the seat next to the countertenor. "Jeff?" Kurt questioned lightly; he just received a grunt in response. "You okay?" The blonde boy didn't even raise his eyes as he shook his head and diverted his attention to his pizza.
"He's moping, you aren't going to get through to him." Thad rolled his eyes as he sat across from Kurt at the lunch table. "Where's Blaine?"
"Practicing," Jeff spat out without looking up at the other two boys.
"With Nick?"
Jeff finally looked up between a tired Thad and a confused Kurt. "Well what do you think genius?" He pushed his pizza away and let his head fall on the table in front of him. "You're supposed to stop this kind of crap from happening, Thad! But, nooooo it was a unanimous council decision to give them a duet! So now I get to stand in the back and harmonize with the rest of the guys while they make disgusting gooey heart eyes at each other in front of an entire audience. Super great for me."
"Jeff, you know I can't d—"
"Save it." The blonde looked up at Kurt from his spot on the tabletop and gave a hollow laugh. "Don't look so surprised Hummel. You aren't the only one pinning at this school ya know. Some of us have been trying to gain a boy's attention for years and go nowhere. So, no, I'm not exactly humored by your weird lovesick obsession with Blaine. At least you knew he was taken when you met, you don't really have an excuse." With that, he got up loudly and pushed his way out of the dining hall.
"So…" Kurt turned his attention to the only other boy still sitting at the table. "Jeff and Nick?"
Thad just groaned in response. "You have no idea what it's like to live with them. At least you don't have a third-party privy to your unwavering crush Blaine." He didn't miss the slight pink that rose to Kurt's cheeks and snorted at it. "I've been in the middle of this one since freshman year and I'm at the end of my rope with it. I have to live with it… and now there are four of you. I'm so done."
"Sorry."
"It isn't your fault." Thad let his fork fall into his pasta, his appetite suddenly lost. "The Nick and Jeff situation has been going on since middle school. Blaine threw himself into it in freshman year, but it's also Jeff's fault. The boy won't tell anyone that he's gay or bi or just in love with Nick or whatever. So, he lost his chance and now he's a mess because he thinks Nick and Blaine are in love."
"Are they?" Kurt felt a lump rising in his throat at the thought. He had often imagined the words 'I love you' and how easily they would flow from Blaine's lips. He thought about the fact that whoever Blaine loved would be loved with abandon and those words said with reverence… he just often imagined they would be said toward him.
Thad smirked. "You'd have to ask them."
"I'm going to ask you nicely… can you leave my boyfriend alone?"
Kurt couldn't say that the confrontation was unexpected, but he never thought that Nick would actually approach him directly. Kurt knew that he had been a little flirty recently. But, how was he supposed to act? There were a few other out and proud gay boys at the school but none of them had the effect on him that Blaine did, and he was sure that Blaine didn't have that same effect on Nick. He knew that Blaine was… well… hot, but there was a difference between general attraction and a heart-shattering connection. He was fully aware that what he had with Blaine was ultimately the latter. "We live together, Nick. It's not like I can just ignore him."
"I know about the duet, Kurt." Nick sat down opposite of him and sighed. "I know he asked you to help with his Baby It's Cold Outside duet last month. I also know that you like him."
"I'm not trying to break you up if that's what you're worried about?" Kurt phrased it as a question. After all, he wasn't an awful person. Would he love to have Blaine to himself? Absolutely! But, he wasn't a homewrecker. He had enough embarrassing love stories in his life as it stood, he didn't need to add 'helping someone cheat' to the list. "I'm not like that. I'm not a bad person."
Nick put his head in his hands and groaned. "I know… but…"
"But?"
"I think he might like you."
Kurt laughed. "Nick you're literally all he talks about. You're his boyfriend and we all know how he talks about you."
"All I'm saying," Nick countered as he stood. "Is that you don't hear how he talks about you; you don't see the way he looks at you. You can't see what's in his eyes and I don't think I've ever been on the receiving end of that look. He really likes you… even if he hasn't figured it out himself yet."
Before the other boy could walk away, Kurt reached out and grabbed his wrist. "If that's true then I'm oblivious… but you're even more so. Don't think the rest of us don't see the way Jeff looks at you."
"Don't mention things that you don't have a clue about, Kurt. Just don't get involved." Nick snatched his arm back as if he had been burned before all but running out of the room.
At the same time that Nick and Kurt were having their discussion, Blaine was busy having a heart to heart of his own. "I just don't know what to do." He paced around the small room talking mostly to himself but throwing a glace to Wes and Thad from time to time.
Thad just groaned. "Maybe you should talk to him?"
"I can't do that!" Blaine threw his hands up in exasperation. "What if I say the wrong thing? I don't exactly know what's going on in my head, Thad! What if I do something stupid?!"
Wes took this as his cue to jump in when he looked over to see that his fellow council member was about ready to throw his AP History book through the wall. How did the guy get any sleep or time to study trying to balance the drama? "I think that if you really loved Nick this wouldn't be a problem right now."
"I never said I loved Nick."
"Does he know that?"
"We've never said it." Blaine looked up at Wes in slight embarrassment. "We've been together over a year and neither of us have said it. Is that bad?"
Wes could only shrug, "I think maybe neither of you want to admit that there are two people out there you'd rather be with. You and Nick, you don't fit. Jeff and Nick. You and Kurt. That makes more sense… at least to me." He shook his head. "Go talk to him… and then… go talk to Kurt."
Kurt took a tentative seat next across from Jeff in the library one day, anxious to hear more about his confused relationship with his roommate. "So…" he started. "You and Nick?"
Jeff looked up with icy eyes. "And?"
"I was just wondering."
The two lapsed into silence, Kurt just watching Jeff as the blonde went back to his book. As time wore on he seemed to become uncomfortable with the other boy's eyes on him. "What do you want, Kurt?"
The newest Warbler shrugged. "I guess I just want to know why you're moping around instead of actually talking to him?"
"Why don't you talk to Blaine?" Jeff snapped.
Kurt shrugged. "Because he already had a boyfriend when I met him. I also don't make everyone else miserable with my moping around and yelling."
"I don't mope."
Kurt raised an eyebrow.
"Okay. Well, maybe I mope a bit. But, I've lived with Nick since we started boarding together in middle school. It's painful. So, maybe I just need to mope around all of you because it literally hurts to be in the same room with him acting so goddamn happy about how much he loves Blaine." The lead Warbler's name was spat out with such contempt from his lips that Kurt wondered if the two were even friends.
"Well, I think those that are unwilling to talk about their feelings shouldn't make everyone else miserable because they missed their shot."
"You don't have any EARTHLY clue what you're talking about, Hummel. Don't push me."
For some reason, it was that last sentence that caused Kurt to push farther. The scene from the locker room at McKinley flashed before him in his mind's eye. He couldn't be there and stand up for himself, but he was going to stand up to Jeff in this moment. He had to.
"Then explain, Jeff. Because it seems to me that you love Nick and he loves you! And if the two of you would just get it together then maybe… just maybe… I might have a chance with the person I love!"
"You don't know love." Jeff pushed his book to the side and for the first time really looked at Kurt. "He told me once and I was too scared of everyone else to saying anything back. So, no, I don't have the right to say anything now. I'm going to do what I always do and do as well as I can until either they break up or we all graduate. That's all I have the right to do at this point."
Kurt shook his head and pushed away from the table as he stood. "Just because you think you lost your chance doesn't mean you did. But, at least do us all a favor and tell him so that you stop bothering all of us about it."
"Can I talk to you?"
Nick sighed and rolled his eyes before turning to the boy who was supposed to be his best friend. He wanted to be mad and hurt but he just couldn't when he turned around and saw the absolute torture in Jeff's eyes. "Sure." He gestured to the piano bench.
"You're going for the solo too?"
"Yup," Nick smiled lightly. "I think you might have a good shot; I only ever get things if uh—ya know…"
"If Blaine goes to bat for you?"
"Yup." Nick looked down and could feel the intensity with which the blonde was staring at him. "Did you want some advice for auditions or…?
Jeff sighed and brought his hand to Nick's chin, lifting his face up so they were looking at each other. "I just wanted to talk. I really… I really miss you. I miss us."
"We still live together, Jeff. It's not like anything has actually changed. You just stopped really wanting to be around me suddenly."
"I know."
"Why?" His voice was quiet. "You know that I can't live without you. I mean you know… I told you…"
Jeff closed his eyes and took a breath. "I love you." His eyes flew open and he was met with chocolate eyes that looked surprised but not disgusted like he had expected. "I love you." He said it again with as much conviction as he could. "I always have. I just… I wasn't ready until I realized what it would mean to not have you. You never had a boyfriend before and I just—something just—it snapped and I don't know. But, I just, I don't even know what I am, Nick. But, I know that I love you." He barely paused, not giving the other boy a chance to speak yet. It has been years he had needed to get this out, and dammit he was going to say it all. "It's always been you, only you, and I'm so sorry that I couldn't say it until now but I just… I love you."
"Jeff…" Nick tore his eyes away for a moment and breathing deeply before he looked back up. The mix in Jeff's face was something that he had never seen before, and it was the vulnerability in the stare that completely captured him. He reached out to stroke a hand down his best friend's face, his thumb ghosting over his bottom lip reverently, eliciting a small whimper.
"Nick… please…" Then they were kissing and Nick was steadying himself against the piano. As Jeff's hands twisted into his dress shirt, his blazer slipping off of his shoulders, he was brought back to the reality of the situation he had just put himself in. They pulled apart, Nick all but gasping for the air he had just deprived himself of. But, how could he breathe now? Because kissing Jeff… that was something he wanted to do again and again. He gulped, pushing himself away from the other boy, his breath heavy and labored.
"I can't…" Nick stuttered out before jumping to his feet and collecting his sheet music, shoving it into his bag haphazardly. "I need to… I have to… I need—"
"To talk to Blaine."
"Yea."
As Nick left the room, a small blush crept up Jeff's cheeks as he smiled.
"You can't even look at me! See? This is exactly the problem!" Blaine ran a hand through his ungelled curls and sighed as he leaned against his headboard. "I can't talk to you; you won't look at me. What happened to us?"
"Life." The word was simple but it was a complete sentence and one that Blaine completely understood. Nick shifted uncomfortably away from Blaine's embrace above the blanket. "Jeff told me he's in love with me." He looked down guilty to pick at his nails. "It was the other day after Warbler's practice. We're both going after the same solo and I was hanging around to get some extra time in and he just… he cornered me." He took in a sharp breath. "All this time he was watching us and supporting us and he… goddammit." His breath hitched. "Goddammit, Jeff. Fuck."
Blaine sighed and released his hands from around the other boy's waist. "You've been in love with him since middle school, you thought he was straight."
"He told me he was straight… but apparently—"
"He was scared, Nick. I've met his parents… they're like mine. Do you really think he could have felt safe?"
The taller boy shuffled so he could put his arms around his knees, tears pooling in his eyes. "I could have made him feel safe. All this time, Blaine. I told him in 6th grade. I TOLD him and he just shrugged it off. But, all the time he just… I could have made him safe."
"Go," Blaine whispered softly after a few minutes. "Go. I never stood a chance anyway, I'm not the one you love."
As Nick scurried off the of the bed haphazardly grabbing his blazer off of Blaine's desk chair and bounding out of the room threw a breathless "thank you" back toward his now ex-boyfriend. "By the way," he said casually as he went to close the door behind himself. "I knew I didn't stand a chance against Kurt. You should take your own advice sometimes."
"I'm really just not in the mood right now, Blaine!"
"Kurt this is serious!" Blaine was jogging after Kurt outside of Warbler's rehearsal, trying in vain to catch up with him. He was just about ready to curse his short legs when Kurt spun around and raised his voice.
"I just need some time alone! Do you have any idea what it's like to room with you and deal with everything in rehearsal and have to hear about all of your issues with Nick?!" Kurt's chest was heaving as Blaine took a careful step closer. "It's really hard for me to do this, Blaine. You have to understand that I just can't—I can't do this." He gestured widely between them, willing him to just understand what he meant
Blaine took another step closer and for the first time really looked Kurt in the eyes. The brilliant blue he was so used to was slightly dulled to a light grey, his lower lip was trembling slightly, and his fingers curled into fists. It was excruciatingly obvious that Kurt was hurting but that he was trying to hold it in for everyone else. "Tell me," Blaine whispered as he took another step, effectively trapping Kurt between himself and the exposed brick wall outside the practice rooms.
"Let me go."
"No."
They stared at each other for a moment. Kurt knew that Blaine wasn't using his whole wight, but that if he wanted to keep Kurt there, he could do it without issue. The shorter boy may not have looked like much but he had co-founded Dalton's fight club with JJ and was an expert boxer. "I just can't do this," he whispered.
Blaine leaned in basically swallowing the words right out of Kurt's mouth, the aroma of peppermint and mocha making him almost lose what little was left of his self-control. "Why can't you just stand here and listen to me?" He felt the warmth of the taller boy as he breathed out sharply.
"Because I don't want to hear about how happy you and Nick are when I just want to be him." Kurt bit his bottom lip hard and looked up, blinking away the mess of tears that were collecting around his eyes. This wasn't the way this was supposed to go and this wasn't the way Blaine was supposed to find out. In an ideal world, Kurt wouldn't have said anything until he had heard the two had broken up or he would have preferred to never say anything at all. How was he supposed to stay friends with Blaine? Live with Blaine? Be in Warblers? The humiliation of it all was too much and he attempted to make a break away from the wall only the have the other boy's leg slot in between his, keeping him still. "I'm sorry. I didn't want—I never—I—I—"
Blaine didn't let Kurt finish as he wrapped his free arm around the taller boy's head and brought their lips together. Kurt gasped into the kiss, which allowed Blaine to run his tongue along his bruised and bleeding bottom lip. As Blaine pulled away Kurt whimpered slightly and opened his eyes slowly to gaze into soft hazel orbs. Blaine cupped his face and smiled. "Are you still going to try and run away from me?"
"But Nick—"
"Is in love with Jeff." Blaine sighed. "He always has been. I knew it when we started going out. We all just thought that Jeff was… ya know?"
"Straight?" Kurt couldn't help but laugh. After the conversations he had with both Jeff and Thad is was so obvious to him just how not straight Jeff really was. But, he assumed, hindsight was 20/20
"Exactly. Nick and I both kind of settled for each other."
"Why did you settle?"
Blaine sighed heavily. "I never thought I was going to meet someone here in Ohio that I could actually connect with and when Nick said he wanted a boyfriend before he went to college I said yes. But, I knew that if Jeff ever wised up I couldn't' compete."
"And Jeff finally wised up?" Kurt shifted slightly under Blaine's grip and the shorter boy released him, turning his body was pressing against the brick wall as well, their heads turned to look at each other.
"Jeff finally wised up. Nick left me three days ago. I'm not really sad about it though…"
Blaine trialed off and Kurt, feeling brave, prompted him to continue. "Why?"
"Because I said I thought I'd never find someone who I actually had a connection with here in Ohio… and of course…. I found you…"
Kurt inhaled and averted his eyes for a moment before forcing himself to really look at Blaine again. He found himself lost in soft honey-colored eyes and an expression of pure vulnerability. He felt himself falling slightly more in love with the boy in front of him. A boy he had thought up until seconds ago unattainable. A boy that at this point he would be free to lean over and kiss…again. So, that's what he did. Kurt pressed his body against Blaine's and melted into his lips, fingers twisting into curly hair. Nothing had ever felt so right.
Later that week in the dining hall both new couples with the help of Wes and Thad finally emerged from their hazes of confusion and lust. For a moment the Warbler's table went completely silent as they saw Blaine tug Kurt down onto his lap while Nick took up a cozy stance with Jeff in the corner, shying away from the prying eyes of their teammates. While none of the boys were sure what had gone on, they all knew that these pairings seemed so much more correct than what they had previously witnessed.
"Klaine and Niff?" Thad threw the question to the group of boys who all simply laughed at the ridiculous couple names that the council member insisted on giving everyone.
"Yea. I like the sound of that," Jeff said from his seat over by Nick. The other three simply nodded and dug into their food.
A/N: There it is… a story… I guess. Haha. Klaine is my OTP but I am so in love with Niff as well. Plus, RM never got the chance to ruin Niff so I appreciate that I can just pretend that they were a happy Dalton couple who went to college together and got married and lived a happy life and had no crazy drama lol. Anyway, I hope this was enjoyable and keep giving me suggestions for songs! I love my playlists but knowing what you guys wat to read is always a fun treat! I'll "see" you all in the next chapter!
