"And you're sure you want to do this?" Kim asked Vanessa.
"Yeah, I really don't mind. Kevin's coming with, I'm picking him up on the way," Vanessa shrugged.
Kim looked at Hailey who blew out a breath, "Okay, but please call if anything comes up."
"Of course," Vanessa smiled and hugged Hailey tightly, "We'll have fun keeping them busy and you guys should have fun decorating the nursery."
Kim looked at Cara and Drew watching them, "Will you two be good for Ms. Vanessa and Mr. Kevin?"
"The bestest," Cara hugged Kim's leg, "Please let me go. Ms. Vanessa said she's taking us to Build-a-Bear."
"Do you even know what that is?" Kim laughed softly.
"No, but it sounds fun," Cara said.
Hailey squatted in front of Drew, "Please stay with her and be polite and kind like I know you can be."
Drew blushed, "I will."
"Thank you," Hailey hugged him, "Listen to what Ms. Vanessa and says."
"I know," Drew stepped back and rubbed his arm.
Hailey's eyes flickered to his hand and she quickly straightened to go to the living room, "Hey Vanessa?"
"Yeah?" Vanessa looked up from helping Cara into her coat.
Hailey walked over and set one of Drew's fidget cubes in her hand, "Can you-"
"Got it," Vanessa smiled and nodded, "I'll keep an eye on him."
"Thank you," Hailey said softly.
"All right you two," Vanessa set her hands on Cara and Drew's backs, "Let's go have fun."
"Are you a fun person?" Cara asked while they walked out.
"What? Yes, I am very fun," Vanessa led them to her car.
Kim laughed and shut the door, "They're in for a treat."
Hailey shook her head, "Good luck to them." She walked up to the nursery and ran her hand through her hair, "Have you ever put wallpaper up?"
"Nope," Kim put her hair into a ponytail, "Want to paint instead then?"
"Gladly," Hailey bent down to open the can of light blue paint.
"Lift with your knees," Adam said.
"Shut up," Jay panted and lifted the changing table into the back of his truck with Adam.
"How are we going to put this together?" Adam asked and grabbed the box with the unassembled rocking lounger in it.
"I have no clue," Jay helped him lift it into the back.
"Are you good at that kind of stuff?" Adam grabbed the bags from the cart and put them in the backseat.
"Yeah, but furniture's confusing," Jay said before putting the cart in the cart corral and coming back to get in the driver's seat, "Plus, if we mess up, we could kill my baby."
"That's extreme," Adam put his seatbelt on, "I don't think your baby will die if we forget a screw in the rocking chair."
"You never know," Jay started driving, "Hey, thanks for helping us today, by the way."
"Not a problem," Adam said.
"Will might stop by to help, but he's going to be watching Drew while Hailey and I go up north next week, so I don't want to bother him too much," Jay explained.
"Your babymoon thing?" Adam asked.
Jay nodded, "Yeah."
"What if you get her pregnant while you're there?" Adam chuckled.
"We are preventing any of that from happening," Jay shook his head, "We have both packed many forms of birth control."
"You don't think it'd be fun to have two babies eight or nine months apart?" Adam joked.
"That just adds up to stress," Jay said.
"Eh, I guess," Adam smiled, "But it'd be cool."
Jay glanced at him, "You want one, don't you?"
"A baby?"
Jay nodded.
Adam breathed out slowly and looked out the window, "Yeah, yeah, man, I want one. We still have the wedding to plan and then we need to adopt Cara," he shrugged, "Just seems like we have to keep pushing it off."
"It'll happen when it's meant to," Jay slowed to a stop turning to look at him.
"Kim's a planner," Adam said, "She wants to live life by her timeline and that's fine, but sometimes we need a little variety. Of course, when she did get pregnant off the timeline that didn't end well, but this time could be different."
"I think it will be different," Jay nodded, "You two are actually together now."
"Yeah," Adam sighed, "Hey, it's green."
Jay took his eyes off Adam and started to drive, leaving Adam to his thoughts for the rest of the drive.
"Listen, little man," Kevin held the door open for Drew to hop out onto the street, "I know you like to run when you get excited or scared, but I'm begging you to please stay with us."
"I will," Drew walked with Kevin to the sidewalk, "My mom and dad are already pretty mad at me for getting suspended."
"Yeah, that wasn't a great thing," Kevin nodded.
"But I gave my dad a lot of Halloween candy last night, so I think everything's okay now," Drew smiled.
Kevin laughed, "Good, I'm glad."
"I had so much fun trick-or-treating last night," Cara swung her hand that Vanessa was holding as they walked to Navy Pier.
"That's awesome, did you get a lot of candy?" Vanessa asked.
"Oh yes," Cara's eyes sparkled, "I loved it."
"How much did you guys eat last night?" Kevin set his hand on Drew's head.
Drew dodged him and walked around to Vanessa's other side, "Um, I think I had six pieces."
"I had three," Cara nodded, "I snuck a piece when Kim wasn't looking."
Vanessa laughed, "Very sneaky."
"I'm like a spy," Cara giggled.
"I like to spy too," Drew said.
"What do you spy on?" Kevin chuckled.
"My mom and dad," Drew smiled, "I usually watch them when they sleep so I know they're alive."
"Oh that's a good idea," Cara nodded.
"I know," Drew said.
Kevin and Vanessa exchanged a look and Kevin scratched his face, "Um, I don't know if that's the best."
Vanessa slowly nodded, "Sometimes privacy is a good thing."
"But what if Mr. Jay and Ms. Hailey die at night, who would know?" Cara asked, "I need to start checking on Kim and Adam while they sleep."
"Exactly," Drew smiled.
"Well," Vanessa took a deep breath, "Sometimes parents like to…cuddle at night and they don't want to be interrupted."
Drew shrugged, "My mom and dad like to cuddle with me too though. We could do it together."
"I love when Kim and Adam cuddle me," Cara wrapped her arms around herself, "I love hugs."
"But there's kid cuddling and adult cuddling," Kevin said, "And to do adult cuddling you have to be like thirty."
"Thirty?" Vanessa raised her eyebrows, "I would say eighteen."
"That's too young," Kevin shook his head.
"Were you really thirty when you first had adult cuddles?" Vanessa crossed her arms.
Kevin's eyes widened, "I…we are not talking about me."
"Thought so," Vanessa smirked.
"I'm just saying, we should be careful about setting expectations for them," Kevin said.
"By shaming them if they do it before thirty?" Vanessa asked.
"I'm confused," Cara whispered to Drew.
"Me too, but it seems like an adult problem," Drew shrugged.
"Are you still going to spy on your mom and dad?" Cara asked.
"Definitely," Drew nodded.
"So this is heavy as hell," Adam said while carrying the changing table up the stairs.
"You're almost there," Kim reached out and touched Adam's back, "Just a couple more steps."
"We really should have hired the store to bring this to our house," Jay breathed.
"You're doing great," Hailey steadied him from behind.
"Maybe you ladies should bring up the rocking chair," Adam grunted and finally reached the second floor.
"In your dreams," Kim guided him backwards.
"How many more steps?" Jay asked.
"Two," Kim answered.
"Would it have been easier to put the pieces together downstairs?" Hailey wondered out loud.
"If you make us carry us this down again, I'm going to scream," Jay said as he made it to the top of the stairs.
Hailey patted his back, "For that comment, I just might."
"Hey, Halsteads, not the time," Adam groaned, "This is heavy."
"Got it," Jay walked backwards down the hall to the nursery, "You guys started painting."
"It looks good, don't you think?" Kim smiled.
"Definitely," Adam lowered the box with Jay and breathed out, "So, I guess we need to go get the rocker."
"Set this up first to give yourselves a break," Hailey said and walked back to the wall she'd been painting before.
"It doesn't look too hard," Kim nodded.
"You two are so wonderful," Jay walked out to get his tools.
Hailey glanced to Kim and Adam then followed him out of the room, "Hey, you know we're just joking right?"
Jay turned and nodded, "Yeah."
Hailey walked over to him and set her hands on his arms, "Everything okay? You seem short."
Jay sighed and rubbed his face, "I'm fine. Sorry. I…it's all getting real right now and with Drew last week, I guess the stress of having all of this piled together is getting to me."
Hailey nodded and hugged him tightly.
Jay softened and wrapped his arms around her, squeezing her against him.
Hailey stepped back after a minute and reached up to run her hand over his hair, "We've got this."
Jay smiled and nodded slightly, "We do."
"And we'll have time to just hang out the two of us this next week and we can talk through it and just be, okay?" Hailey said softly.
"Yeah," Jay breathed, "It sounds really good actually."
Hailey kissed him lightly, "I love you, partner."
Jay chuckled, "I love you too."
Cara stood in front of Kevin with her arms filled with animals she wanted to get stuffed, "How will I ever choose?"
Kevin knelt in front of her, "Let's see what you picked out."
Vanessa tore her gaze from them to look at Drew still staring at the wall of possible animals to stuff and walked over to him, "Figure out what you want yet?"
Drew shrugged and glanced at her, "I just don't know. I already have three stuffed animals at home."
"Which are what?" Vanessa asked.
"I have my t-rex, Rexy, and then two birds named Carl and Hoot," Drew said.
Vanessa nodded, "So maybe you get another dinosaur or you could get a bear or even a dog. There are some pretty cool ones."
Drew stepped forward and picked up a light brown bear, "Does it have to be for me?"
Vanessa raised her eyebrows, "Who else would it be for?"
"Buzz," Drew said and stared at the bear in his hands.
"Who's Buzz?" Vanessa asked, searching her memory to see if she ever remembered Hailey or Jay talking about a friend from school but she was certain they'd only said Drew really wasn't interested in talking to other kids.
"The baby," Drew looked at her.
"Oh!" Vanessa's eyes widened, "I forgot that's what you wanted to name the baby." She smiled and nodded, "If you're sure that's what you want."
Drew nodded and smiled as well, "Yes. I want to give Buzz a present."
"Then I think this bear would be perfect," Vanessa said.
There was a knock on the door to the nursery and everyone looked up to see Will standing in the door with a box of pizza, "Anyone hungry?"
"Starving," Kim said and finished putting up the last piece of wallpaper with Hailey.
"You didn't have to do that," Hailey wiped her hands on her shirt.
Will shrugged, "It's just a pepperoni. Thought you could use a break, but this is really looking good."
"Thanks," Jay stood from his spot on the ground, "I think we've finished the changing table."
"After…this last…screw," Adam finished and used his shirt to wipe the sweat from his forehead, "If someone hadn't thrown out the bag of screws earlier, we would have finished at least an half an hour ago."
"I apologized," Kim walked to Will and took the box from him, "Just sit in here?"
"Fine with me," Hailey smiled, "I'll go get us some napkins. Will, do you want a drink?"
"Water's fine," he said and squeezed her shoulder as she walked past him.
"Help me with the curtains?" Jay asked Will.
"Of course," Will slipped his coat off and set it in the hall, "How's it been going?"
"Pretty good. The girls killed the painting and the wallpaper. That worries me though," Jay opened up the package of curtains, "Maybe the room's too small."
"Or maybe Hailey and I are just really good at painting," Kim said, "Jay, the room's the perfect size."
Adam nodded, "There's nothing wrong with it."
Will took the curtains from Jay and held them out, "I think you should wash these before hanging them. They have wrinkles."
"Shoot, and there's probably chemicals on them, right?" Jay grabbed the curtains back and smelled them, "Will, smell these. What would chemicals smell like? They do have a slight smell."
Kim shrugged, "Probably just the plastic from the bag. It won't do any harm."
"Still," Jay hurried out of the room and downstairs to throw the curtains in the wash.
"He's a little on edge today," Adam told Will.
Kim nodded, "He's at like a twelve when he should be at a seven at best."
Will laughed and shook his head, "I'm not surprised."
"Ms. Vanessa, you have to help me pick out the perfect princess outfit," Cara pulled Vanessa's hand to the clothes.
Drew finished 'washing' his bear and looked at Kevin, "Can you help me pick out clothes for my bear?"
"Of course, what're you thinking?" Kevin walked with him to the clothing section.
"Something soft," Drew said, "And I think something a police officer would wear."
"I like that," Kevin smiled, "All right, let's see, what do we got?"
Drew lightly scratched his arm walked along the aisle.
Kevin noticed and reached out to hesitantly touch Drew's shoulder, "You okay? I don't think you're supposed to be scratching."
Drew blushed and looked at his hand, "Um, I think I'm overwhelmed."
"Yeah, there's a lot to look at," Kevin nodded, "But we'll figure it out."
Drew bit his lip and nodded, "Okay."
Kevin spotted a police officer uniform and grabbed it, "Look at this! It's just what you wanted."
Drew smiled, "I like the hat."
"Then we can definitely get that," Kevin said and put the rest of the outfit away.
"Hey Drew," Vanessa peaked her head around the corner, "I'm not saying you have to get this, but look," she held up a shirt and Drew's eyes widened.
"It's perfect!" he hurried over to her.
Hailey plopped down in the rocker and smiled, "I love it."
"You look really good," Jay said.
Hailey felt tears come to her eyes and she took a deep breath.
"Let's take this garbage out," Kim said softly to Will and set a hand on Adam's arm.
They both nodded and gathered up the pieces of plastic and cardboard boxes to bring outside before walking out.
Hailey sniffled and stood, "Try it out."
Jay nodded and squeezed her hand as he sat down. He rubbed his hands over the arms and smiled. He patted his legs, "Come here."
Hailey sat in his lap and immediately hugged him, burying her face in his neck, "It's real," she mumbled.
"Very real," Jay rubbed her back.
"Sorry," Hailey sat up and wiped her eyes, "Gosh, I can't believe this is happening."
"First of all, don't apologize," Jay rubbed his thumb over her cheek, "It's super overwhelming. I mean, we pretty much put together this whole room today. It's ready for a baby."
"I wouldn't say ready," Hailey weakly smiled, "But yeah."
"And second, I can't believe it either," Jay put his hand in her hair, "We're having a baby. It's crazy to think about."
Hailey laughed and nodded, "Us with a baby."
"He's going to be right here," Jay held Hailey's hands apart as if she were holding a baby.
Hailey smiled, "And Drew will be right here," she moved one of her legs and touched Jay's other thigh.
"I'm not a chair, but okay," Jay chuckled.
Hailey laughed softly, "You're a very comfortable chair though; I like sitting on you."
"I'm glad," Jay smiled and kissed her nose, "You're always meant to be here."
Hailey bent down to kiss him and whispered, "That was a little cheesy."
"It's what I do best," Jay said against her lips.
Hailey laughed again and closed her eyes briefly, "You are good at it."
Jay smiled and quickly adjusted her to cradle her in his arms, "Why thank you."
Hailey reached up and set her hand on the side of his face, "Thank you for all of this."
Jay shook his head, "Thank you."
They both looked around the room for a minute taking it all in. It still needed the curtains and the clothes needed to be put away, but the furniture was all put together and in pretty much the right place, so it counted as finished for now.
Jay lightly rocked the lounger and rested his head back, "I'm glad you picked this chair, it's super comfortable."
"That was the goal, you'll be spending many nights here," Hailey winked and sat up.
"I fully expected that response," Jay laughed.
"Nah, I'll take turns," Hailey smiled turned so she could lean back against him, "It might be peaceful."
Jay nodded and held her close, "I can't wait to meet him."
Hailey set her hands over Jay's, "Soon. Just over a month."
"Hopefully it'll be that long," Jay kissed the back of her head.
"Yeah," Hailey breathed, "Hopefully."
"We just have to think good thoughts and hope for a healthy pregnancy," Jay flipped his hand around to hold her fingers.
Hailey swallowed and nodded.
"It'll all be okay," Jay whispered, "I know it."
"Hey, Uncle Will's here!" Drew smiled as Vanessa pulled her car in front of Jay and Hailey's house.
"The doctor?" Cara asked.
Drew nodded and the second Vanessa parked the car he was out of his seat running to the front door with his box from Build-A-Bear.
"Damn, he really does just run when he wants," Kevin breathed and unbuckled his seatbelt.
At the house, Drew was pushing open the front door, "Uncle Will!"
Will came around the corner from the kitchen and smiled, "Hey, bud!"
Drew carefully set the box on the steps and hugged Will, "I missed you."
Will's smile widened and he picked Drew up, "Well, now we're going to get to spend a whole week together, isn't that cool?"
Drew nodded, "I'm excited."
Vanessa, Kevin, and Cara walked in the front door and Kevin looked at Drew, "You're pretty fast, little man."
Jay walked over and crossed his arms, "Does that mean he ran?"
"Just from the car," Drew slipped to the ground, "I was good."
Jay blew out a breath and shook his head, "Good."
"Promise," Drew said, "Dad, I swear."
"I believe you," Jay smiled and put his arms to his side.
"How'd it go?" Kim asked while coming around with Adam and Hailey.
"So fun!" Cara quickly opened her box and held up a purple unicorn dressed in a pink tutu, "Her name's Mrs. Rose Petal."
"You are so creative," Adam squatted next to her, "Would you look at that?"
"Feel her, she's the softest thing in the world," Cara rubbed the unicorn against his face.
"What about you, honey?" Hailey sat on the steps next to Drew's box, "Can we see?"
Drew smiled and nodded, opening the box, "It's for Buzz."
Jay and Hailey looked at each other. "You made a stuffed animal for the baby?" Jay asked.
"It was all his idea," Vanessa said.
Drew pulled out his bear wearing the police hat and a shirt that said 'Cool Bro.'
Hailey weakly laughed and instantly covered her face, "I'm a mess today."
Drew's smile fell, "You don't like it?"
"Oh no," Hailey shook her head, "No, I love it," she took the bear from him and smiled at it, "It's just the sweetest thing I think I've ever seen and it makes me really happy."
"It's perfect," Jay squeezed Drew's shoulder and kissed the top of Hailey's head.
Drew smiled again, "Okay, good."
"What's his name?" Will asked.
"Blue," Drew said.
Hailey hugged him and kissed the side of his head, "Thank you, sweetheart. The baby's going to love it just as much as we do."
Kim lightly nudged Vanessa, "This was a super cute idea. Thank you for taking them."
Vanessa smiled, "It was a lot of fun. I got some adorable pictures that I'll definitely send to you both."
"Thank you," Hailey said through her tears. She laughed, "Oh my god, who am I?" she wiped her eyes and sniffled.
"You're my mom," Drew shrugged, not understanding her sarcasm and rhetorical question.
"Well, crap, now I'm going to cry," Adam blinked his eyes and looked up at the ceiling.
Kevin laughed, "All right, that's enough tears. Pull it together people!"
Jay chuckled and sat next to Hailey, pulling her against his side. He lifted Drew onto his knee and said, "We are so lucky to have you."
"And I'm lucky to have you," Drew smiled.
"Yeah, I'm out," Will laughed and turned away to rub his eyes.
Kim looked at Vanessa, "Men."
Vanessa laughed, "The kids have made them soft."
"Just wait till the baby comes, then we'll see that one cry," Adam pointed toward Jay.
"I'll hold it together," Jay smirked.
Hailey scoffed, "Okay, want to bet?"
"Seeing as you lost our last bet, I will gladly bet on that," Jay winked.
Hailey shook her head and kissed him.
"Ew," Cara scrunched her nose.
"Do you think kissing's gross?" Adam tickled her side, "I guess that just means I have to kiss all over your face."
"No!" Cara laughed and ran away carrying her unicorn; Adam chasing after her.
Kim smiled and sat on the floor, "I think we all got pretty lucky with these two."
"Yeah we did," Hailey said softly and rubbed Drew's back.
A/N: Definitely the easiest chapter to write in a while just because it made me so happy and came together I think pretty well. Let me know what you think! I'm excited for what's to come and I hope you are too!
