Chapter 41.
=Hiccup's POV=
[February 1; Night]
[Hunter Isle; Forge]
It's been about two weeks since Viggo made the announcement that no more dragons would be killed, harmed, or captured on Hunter Isle after my discovery that it was their reaction to the dragons being there in big groups and attacking with weapons causing the dragons to be hostile. Since then, the dragons come and go as they please; some even help out villagers struggling with heavy loads. I loved it; I really did. The best part about living on an island that had peace with dragons is that also, the tribe didn't shun me for my powers. This was perfect for me and I didn't want to leave. I knew that for sure now and I planned to tell Viggo and Ryker soon, when I decided a few other things. I needed to get the dragon hunting business out of the way, despite how cruel that sounds. The dragons weren't going to bond or feel safe if they were watching their friends/riders killing other dragons. Toothless minded a lot, but he knew that we'd change the minds of the hunters as we'd done to others in the past.
I still practice with my powers, all the same ones as before. We haven't found anything new yet thorough tests. I did send a message to Gobber, letting him know that I found the source of the dragon hunter tribe's raids, and thus, there will be no more hunting on Hunter Isle. Gobber sends word back almost right away, excluding travel time and letting poor Sharpshot rest first; he said how proud he was and couldn't wait until he got word on who was first to bond of the Grimborn brothers. Shockingly, neither had one had bonded yet, but Vera and Hertha had. Vera to a female Hobblegrunt she has named Moodscale, and Hertha, to a male Deadly Nadder she calls Flarespine. Runa wants to bond; she's excited to, but I told her that it wasn't always so simple and she had to be patient to meet her bonded dragon. Vera and Hertha's bonding happened at random.
Hertha was first, Flarespine helped bring home some things that she couldn't carry alone, and then after that; he wouldn't leave her side. I explained that Flarespine seems to like her and might have chosen her for bonding with. I proved it later when I had Hertha do the hand thing and the bonding took place; this happened on January 25th. Vera's bonding with Moodscale was on January 29th, also Vera is also seventeen as of December 28th. Hertha also just had a birthday on January 16th. I believe Runa's birthday is next on February 8th, and then Ryker's will follow on the 13th before mine happens on the 28th. That's the last day of February, which marks my birthday, even if it isn't the 29th, which was the day I was born. It wouldn't come for another two years. I believe the next in line would be Brynjar, Viggo, then Agnar. After those, it would circle back to Truda's birthday in November, then onto Vera, and the cycle would continue.
Oh, and I couldn't forget Gobber, his birthday was in May along with Viggo's. I know my father's passed back in November, but obviously, I'm not speaking to or seeing him. Although, I do wonder what his response was to my letter. I should ask Gobber when Sharpshot returns; I just sent Gobber a letter about Hertha and Vera bonding to dragons. I also wonder who will be next to bond. Currently, I'm in the forge, it's about 7:45 pm. Ulrik has already left for the night, and I promised to shut things down and lock up for him when I was done. I never to the Grimborn's for dinner, so I'm sure that would prompt them coming to find me soon. I was working on Inferno again, trying to make it a bit easier to carry. I didn't like having a lot to carry, so if I could redesign the sword and still have it be effective; I'd be happy.
"Hiccup!" I heard Viggo call. And there it was, them looking for me because it's almost 8 pm, and dinner was two hours ago.
"Forge!" I replied. Not long after that, I saw them walk up to the counter. "Come to ask where I was for dinner?" I chuckled.
"Well, yes. You've been here all day, surely you're tired and hungry?" Viggo smiled.
"Nah, Ulrik and I grabbed something from one of the food stands around 6:30-ish," I stated gently as I kept trying to connect pieces and figure out how my design idea on paper could be crafted physically.
"Ah, but still, aren't you tired?" Ryker wondered.
"I'm used to it, so I could be and not feel it yet," I responded. "I'm just working with a few things, waiting for the forge to die down a bit. The first rule is not to leave it when it could still start burning hot again," I repeated, recalling Gobber's forge lessons.
"What are you working on?" Viggo inquired, he was always fascinated by my inventive mind.
"Well, carrying the sword and shield are heavy, along with armor, and all that. I was looking to see if I could redesign my sword to be lighter and easier to carry when flying or even just walking around," I explained. I never used to have to carry my gear, but with the Johann situation; I feel like I need to be more on guard to avoid another capture…" I admitted with a shrug.
"You are safe here, Hiccup. Even if they come, you are not alone. It's not just you and Toothless this time," Viggo reassured as I smiled a little.
"I appreciate that, but I can't always expect someone to save me…" I informed. "I gotta learn how to defend myself. And I know I have my powers, but I don't want to rely on them if I have other options. Know what I mean?"
"Completely understandable," Viggo nodded. "Everyone should always be prepared to fight their own battles if the situation calls for it,"
"Just remember you have several forms of protection and assistance. Your weapons, your powers, your dragon, and us," Ryker grinned.
"Thanks." I nodded, I would remember that. I really was blessed to have these guys in my life, the whole tribe, in fact.
"How's Gobber?" Viggo asked while they came inside and sat down, figuring I'd be here a bit longer and we could talk. Not that I minded, I enjoyed their company.
"He's good, doing the same as always and basically ignoring everyone unless it's forge-related," I smiled.
"Giving them the cold shoulder, is he?" Ryker laughed a little.
"Cold everything according to the last letter. Gobber said he wasn't even really interacting with the tribe, just having them drop off their weapons and what needs to be done with a note. Or having them submit orders on parchment, but he won't open the forge counter windows. My dad said he was being unreasonable about things, but I guess Gobber told him that the only thing unreasonable was how they all rejected and abandoned their ONLY heir and future chief. Well, former now…I basically renounced my status in the tribe in the letter to my dad, told him I wouldn't be coming back, so not to hold hope I was just mad and taking time to myself," I informed while still working.
I was probably gonna give it a break for tonight; I wasn't getting anywhere with it and I was feeling some of that fatigue. The raids were done here, not that they were really attacks, so that made the days and nights a lot easier. I put my work into a small container and set it away to work on it tomorrow. I'd need to refigure a few things, such was the fun on inventing. "What did you say to him?"
"Doesn't matter…" I shrugged softly, then started cleaning up. "I got the message across that I wasn't coming back because this is the second time he and everyone else has abandoned me. And I'm not going to let it go this time. Everything else was just being hurt and disappointed by his choices, and that I hope we never have to cross paths for the rest of our lives because I don't want to see any of them again, unless absolutely necessary. But I won't come back and see him or anyone else unless it's life or death, and even then…I won't stay." Hiccup remarked calmly. His letter was much longer and explained how hurt he was by everything, that he hated having to hide his powers, that his father wasn't there for him. It was just what needed to be said. "I told him I wasn't heir anymore or part of the tribe. My running away was self-exile, despite that everyone's reactions and behavior told me all I needed about not being welcome there. However…" I paused.
"What?" Ryker and Viggo wondered.
I looked at them. "Not being an heir, or part of the tribe doesn't mean I'm not a Viking of the Archipelago still. And no matter what they did to me if they actually needed help; I would. I wouldn't let personal reasons keep me from helping others who are in trouble," I stated firmly. "I want peace. Between dragons and humans. Between humans too. The only way to create it is to stop the fighting, and sometimes everyone has to stand together enemies or allies. So maybe Berk did hurt me with what happened, that doesn't mean I want them to get hurt or be killed. So if something comes up where they desperately needed help; I would. Not because of who they were to me; it's just the right thing to do." I said.
"That makes you a good man, Hiccup. Don't ever lose it," Ryker claimed as Viggo nodded in agreement.
"I don't intend to stop being the person I am just because I'm not accepted by others. I know I want acceptance of who I am, and I know the people who do accept me as I am will always be in my life, have my back, on my side, love and support me," I remarked gently. "But more than acceptance, I just want peace. I want people to get along; it doesn't matter if we have different views…But for Gods' sake, respect one another and get along. And if Berk ever needed help; I would. I wouldn't go back and take my old place with them. But I would help out, and leave again. That's…Just how I am,"
"And who and how you are is completely fine with us and our tribe, Hiccup. As I said, don't be afraid to be who you are with us," Viggo reminded.
"I'm not anymore; I've seen the truth from your people, so they all have my trust and friendship. Everyone has been nothing but nice and accepting to me since I got here with you guys…And that feeling is not something I can even begin to describe," I admitted. "So I owe you both thanks, for saving my life and letting me into your lives, your tribe's lives. Giving me something I lost, or maybe it was never really there…But what you gave me, is real and I am grateful to you both for it,"
"What did we give you?" Ryker wondered.
I smiled as I checked on the forge and finished putting it out, so it would be safe for the night until morning when Ulrik got it relit for work. "Acceptance, trust…Friendship. All of it, real. Not…Fake like it was with Berk, or at least that's how it feels after everything," I explained.
"Well, you're very welcome, Hiccup. We're glad to be your friends, have your trust, and happy to have you with us," Viggo said.
"Come on you two, out. I promised Ulrich I'd lock up," I said as the brother quickly moved to exit the shop. I finished up my last things and then left as well, making sure the door was locked and secured the key in my pocket. Yes, Ulrik trusted me with my own key to the shop; I nearly cried that day. Regardless, I'm happy to be here, and want to stay; I'm just not sure how to bring it up. Maybe I'd think of something while walking with them back to the house.
. . .
[Night]
[Hunter Isle; Village]
As we walked, I sensed we weren't alone and was nervous. I felt like we were not only being watched but followed too. "Something wrong, Hiccup?" Ryker questioned.
"Hm?" I snapped out of my thoughts. "I'm not really sure. I feel like we're being watched and followed," I informed.
"Let's just keep walking, and have our guards up for anything," Viggo suggested. So, we did. The feeling kept nagging me as I was looking around and Toothless obviously sensed it too because he was growling a bit. After a few more moments as we entered the village part with home, not shops, I stopped and so did Toothless. Something was coming at us, I felt it.
"Watch out!" I shouted quickly, but before I could move Ryker out of the way, a dragon came through, running into Ryker and moving him out of the way with a hard nudge forward.
"What the hell!" Ryker yelled. "It attacked me!" He started getting to his feet with Viggo's help as I inspected closer at the spot Ryker had been in.
"No…" I told him, bending down to pick something up and then turned to reveal an arrow with some kind of purple substance on the tip. "She saved you. That dragon moved you from being shot and poisoned by this," I corrected as Ryker's eyes widened, so did Viggo's; then they looked at the dragon. I got a good look at the dragon that came in; definitely a Rumblehorn and mostly yellow, like gold.
"This…Is that Rumblehorn from the last raid we had here," Ryker mentioned. "The one you had me set my sword down for," He added to clarify what he meant.
"You're right, brother," Viggo nodded, confirming Ryker's statement.
"I'd ask what she's here for, but sometimes they just come to say hi or play," I told them.
"She seems hurt from the landing," Ryker noted, trying to get closer. I noticed others were coming out of their homes, or wherever they had been. The crash seemed to get a lot of attention, but that was to be expected when it happened at nearly 8:00 pm and things were quiet because everyone was home relaxing and children were preparing for bed.
"Ryker, be careful," Viggo warned, recalling some dragons were hostile while injured or weak.
"It's alright, girl…I'm not gonna hurt ya any…I just want to make sure you're okay…" Ryker tried, making his way to the dragon still, hands up showing he meant no harm.
"He's okay, Viggo. In fact, it's probably better for him to approach given the dragon knows him and will recognize his scent," I stated to Viggo calmly. "He's alright, let him go ahead. I'm right here to intervene if there's an issue," I assured the younger of the Grimborn brothers. Viggo nodded, and we watched as Ryker managed to get close enough, assuring the dragon he wasn't going to hurt her, and only wanted to help. The Rumblehorn responded by nudging his hand softly and then letting him look over her.
"Hiccup, I think her wing is injured," Ryker mentioned. "Can you come to take a look?" He asked.
"Sure," I smiled, rather impressed with how Ryker was handling things. Ryker hadn't even hesitated to get close and figure out what was wrong. I made my way over carefully, and didn't need to put my hands up; she was already relaxed with Ryker next to her, so I kind of had a feeling of what could end up happening with these two. I made my way over to the right-wing and inspected it gently. "These are arrow wounds, this dragon was attacking between last week and now," I pointed out the marks.
"Who would shoot the wings?" Viggo asked as I gave him an unamused really look.
"Downed dragons are dead dragons. They can't fly, and in some cases, can't hunt. Obviously, this wasn't done by any of your hunters…But it means she was attacked by someone in the last week," I informed softly.
"Will she be okay?" Runa inquired gently.
I nodded. "Of course. The wounds have mostly healed already, but it was still weak and she landed on it. So, I think it could be a sprain, but it doesn't appear anything is broken," I replied to Runa. I looked at the wing, then my hands. I wondered if my healing ability could work here. I know it worked for me, but what about others? I suppose there was only one way to find out. I brought up my hands to the wing, and the Rumblehorn growled a little.
"Easy, girl…Easy," Ryker soothed. "Hiccup is just trying to help,"
I smiled at that and then closed my eyes to focus. I felt my energy flow to my hands, then I opened my eyes to see the blue aura around them, sort of meshed into one wavy looking energy. I carefully moved my hands to the wing as Ryker kept the Rumblehorn calm by rubbing her head and talking in what was considered his light voice. I moved my hands along the wing, trying to spread out my aura farther to cover more of the wounded wing. It worked a little, but I still had to move slow and keep it limited or I'd tire myself out and end up unconscious. Once I finished, the flow receded back to my hands, then the glowing transparent blue color faded as I pulled hands back to my lap.
"She'll be alright now," I said. The Rumblehorn got up, shaking a bit, and stretching her wings out before leaping around with some thudding as I laughed a bit. The Rumblehorn purred and nudged into my stomach. I gave an oof from the force and rubbed her face a little. "Yes, you're welcome. Feel better now?" The dragon gave a light roar and nuzzled me. The Rumblehorn turned it's attention to Ryker and moved to face him completely, just staring.
"What's she doing?" Ryker asked.
"I have a pretty good feeling about what's about to happen," I chuckled as I moved between them, but on the side, not directly between. "Close your eyes and turn your head," I instructed. Ryker didn't argue, he just did it. I raised his right hand up and stepped away. The Rumblehorn didn't hesitate to close her eyes, and press to Ryker's hand; the man let out a relieved sigh almost. "Go ahead, Ryker…Open your eyes." I smiled. Ryker opened his eyes, surprised to have bonded, but he smiled. I recognized it; I knew Ryker suddenly felt the bond I had always talked about. "Feel that completeness taking over your body?" I asked as he managed a nod and the dragon opened her eyes to look at him. "That's what it feels like to have a bonded dragon. Might want to come up with a name for her, she's yours now," I informed.
Ryker stared back into the Rumblehorn's eyes, then smiled softly. "Thank you…For saving my life," Ryker began and started rubbing the dragon's face. "And I think we'll call you…Valiant,"
