I was at my typewriter looking through the Planet files that we had on Mugsy Maples. I just needed to know if we actually had a story to find. Mugsy has only ever been a suspect, the only time he came close to being convicted and the case was thrown out due to a technicality. This guy is a grade-A loser but nothing seems to stick to him.

I began to stretch as there was a timid knock on my door. In walked a defeated Jimmy Olsen.

"Jimmy? Are you okay," I rushed to his side and quickly searched him for any sign of foul play.

"I am okay, Miss Lane, but I think that Anti-Memory vapor stuff worked," he grumbled.

"What?"

"I don't know," he sighed. "All I remember is that I left here to see if I could get into Maples office and the next thing I know I am in a strange office with no idea how I got there." He looked at the floor in shame. "It wasn't until I was out the door and trying to get my barring that I saw the nameplate on the door."

"You must have accidentally sprayed yourself," I reasoned out loud.

"That is what I think too, but I have no way to prove it," Jimmy replied.

"Well, let me call Clark for backup and go see the Chief. I want you to do your darnedest to remember as much as you can." I rang Clark's office and told him to meet us outside Mr. White's office, then escorted the bashful Cub Reporter out of mine.

We were trying to explain to the Chief what happened when he got a phone call, "Yes? What? Oh no," he hung up without any more information. He looked between us with anger in the eyes. "A daylight robbery at the Acme Loan Company. One Hundred thousand dollars and they don't even remember how it happened."

"They don't remember?" I asked. I saw Clark slip out while Jimmy tried to hide his shame.

"That means Mugsy Maples must've pulled the job," Perry speculated. "He must have squirted them with that anti-memory vapor. And it's all your fault!" His finger wagged in Jimmy's direction.

"Chief," I interrupted, "this is not the time to be pointing fingers. We need to get to Musgy's office right now, we may be able to get some evidence against him."

"What? No. That is too risky!" Mr. White tried to protest.

"Then you stay here, Chief," I replied, "let's go Jimmy."

"Wait," he stopped our quick getaway. "Just let me get my hat."

It didn't take us long to get to his office, and just to be safe I decided to call his office just to be sure that he wasn't in. After four long rings and the beginning of a fifth, I hung up and motioned for the gentlemen to follow me.

As we approached the door, Mr. White expressed his concern once again, "I don't think we shouldn't have come here looking for Mugsy Maples without first notifying Inspector Henderson."

"I told you we aren't here to find Mugsy. We are just looking for evidence against him if he was nice enough to leave his door open." The knob turned on cue and I lead the charge into Maples' office.

"I still say this is too risky," he mumbled. "What if Mugsy Maples catches us searching his office?"

"How can he, if he isn't here?" I pointed out, "I called first to make sure and no one answered."

"I still say it is too risky."

"Now, now, Chief, you remember our bargain. On this story, we're giving the orders. You agreed to do whatever we said," Jimmy spoke up.

"Alright, alright," I broke it up before the Chief could retort, "start looking for clues." That at least quieted Perry White for a brief second, but what came through the door about three minutes later was exactly what White needed to lord my "carelessness" over me for the next 10 years.

"Well, well… we got company," I watched at both Mr. White and Jimmy went pale in fear. I closed my eyes, took a deep sigh, and when I opened them again I locked eyes on the smiling sweet face of Professor Pepperwinkle.

He recognized me immediately and his eyes sparkled with pride. "There's no need to be alarmed, Miss Lane," he assured me. "These gentlemen are using my anti-memory vapor for the good of mankind."

I looked at Mugsy and snarled, "Oh I'll bet they are."

"Look," Mugsy's lackey, Knuckles, drew the attention to himself, "what we wanna know is what's the big idea busting in here and frisking the joint?"

The Chief spoke up before I even had a chance to open my mouth. "Well, I'll tell – I mean to say, uh—uh—" And this is why I do the talking, Chief. "Look here, you can't threaten me with that gun. I'm Perry White, publisher of the Daily Planet."

CHIEF! Did you really think that was going to change their minds?

Mugsy's whole demeanor changed from confused to angry in a manner of seconds. "Reporters, huh? Nosy reporters. Including our phony window-washer friend!" He pointed at Jimmy. The boy was trying to act brave, but I noticed the way he swallowed hard as Mugsy pointed him out.

"Okay, everybody, come on," the crook demanded.

"But where are you taking us?" I spoke up.

"To the country," he smiled, "I have a beautiful face in the country." I only had a couple of seconds to think, so I decided not to grab my purse and prayed that the men wouldn't see it. I know that Clark is looking into somethings so if either he or Inspector Henderson get here then they will know I was here… and make the obvious connections.

I stayed quiet throughout the car ride, trying to catch mile-markers or landmarks that may help if I could get a chance to use a phone. Jimmy and Perry were trying to reason with our captors which, of course, did nothing.

Finally, he pulled up to the door of house just outside of Bellview. The car came to a stop and the orders began immediately. "Alright, everybody out. Come on hurry it up. Come on, don't make me do all the work."

Mugsy opened the door to a really nice place, but we didn't get to enjoy the beauty for every long. "Alright, let's go, right down to the cellar. Let's go." He looked at Perry, "Alright Pops, down the stairs."

"I'm not gonna take another step. You can't get away with this," Perry commented.

"But I am getting away with it," Mugsy laughed. "So far, $100,000 worth. And the Prof's anti-memory vapor's gonna get us plenty more."

Knuckles laughed, "This is beautiful. The witnesses can't even remember who robbed 'em. The law's got nothing to go on. They can't even touch us."

My eyes narrowed in on Mugsy, who was beaming with pride. I really need to start wearing a wire or recorder of some kind.

"What about Superman," Perry suggested.

"Chief, don't even mention his name! If Superman takes a hand, we'll never get that raise."

Mugsy finally had enough, "Come on, come. Cut out the chatter and downstairs."

A knock on the door interrupted our descent. Perry voice the question first, "I wonder who that is?"

"Shut up," Mugsy snapped. "Go get it, Knuckles."

"Hey, Mugsy, suppose it is Superman?" Knuckles reasoned. Don't worry it isn't Superman, he and I have a deal.

And everything else went blank.

When we came too, Jimmy was untying the Chief and I was working on Professor Pepperwinkle. The door had been busted open, and the two crooks were laying on the floor with the cash bag open revealing the money.

"Miss Lane," I heard Inspector Henderson call out to us. "Mr. White?"

"We are down here, Inspector," Mr. White bellowed.

Clark was right behind the Inspector with concern in his eyes. Where did you come from? "Lois," he let out a sigh of relief as he pulled me into a hug. "I'm so glad you are okay."

"I'm okay, Clark," I whispered. "Did you have anything to do with this?"

He winked, "No, this time it looks like it was all Jimmy."

Once back in the office we met together for a quick debriefing. Jimmy was proudly pacing in front of the Chief's desk. He looked so happy, "Let's face it, Chief," Jimmy said. "Superman didn't rescue us this time. I did."

"You?"

"Well, as he said, Chief. Let's face it. None of us remember what happened after we were taken to that place in the car. So Jimmy must have broken his bonds, knocked out the two crooks, knocked down the door and rescued us," I shrugged. Honestly, saying it like it was a fact made it all a lot more unbelievable, but we needed it to be true.

"It's not possible," Mr. White shook his head.

"Obviously the can of Anti-memory vapor fell out of Mugsy's pocket when I knocked them out. That's why none of us remember anything." Jimmy was starting to believe the fantastic story himself, and I could see that Clark was trying hard not to laugh. "But who was the only one that wasn't tied up when we started to come to?"

"You," Mr. White grumbled.

"Ipso facto, I'm your hero," Jimmy beamed. "A hero, I might add, with a $10 raise."

I jumped on that bandwagon, "Hey, just a minute. I'm in on that raise department too, remember?"

"Alright, alright, you'll get your raise."

Professor Pepperwinkle, who had been hiding the background pondering for awhile finally stepped forward to speak up. "Oh, dear, dear, it seems a pity."

"What, Professor? That we get a raise"

"No, I seem to have forgotten my formula for making my anti-memory vapor," He turned directly to Clark and explained, "I'll never be able to make anymore. Don't you think it's a pity, Mr. Kent?'

He stood and reassured the old man, "Oh I do, Professor. I do, indeed. It would be a lot better for people not to remember."

Clark and I escorted the good professor to the door of the Daily Planet building and bid him ado.

"Until next time, Professor," Clark shook his hand.

"It is always good to see you, Mr. Kent and Miss Lane," the Professor smiled.

"We will see you at our wedding next week," I reminded him.

"You will? Oh, yes! You will," he beamed. "I am looking forward to it.

I kissed him on the cheek, "So are we. Goodbye, Professor." Clark and I watched him disappear around the corner.

My fiancé began to escort me back to the office. Once in the elevator, I turned to Clark, "Did Superman have anything to do with what happened today?"

"I promised he wouldn't," he replied.

"That doesn't mean he didn't."

"I was there, Lois, but I made sure that I used Jimmy as the hero. I just helped him along."

I reached up to put my arms around his neck. "I am just glad that you are always on my side," I whispered before meeting him with a kiss.
