Bella had been transferred into the intensive care unit and I had given the order that I was to approve anything done to her. I called Charlie and informed him of what had happened, and then I went down to my office where Esme and Baby Teresa were waiting.

"What are you thinking?" I asked my wife, glancing at her out of the corner of my eye as I washed my hands.

"I'm thinking I want to adopt her." Esme said casually.

"Yeah, I thought so."

I dried my hands and reached for the baby.

"Give her here."

Esme passed her to me and I sat down in a chair to look her over.

"She'll be okay," I said after a moment, "Stay here. I'll bring a bottle of formula and a package of foster paperwork."

It was late at night when I returned to Bella's room. Charlie had been there until only recently when I'd charmed a nurse into telling him to sod off. I closed the door behind me and locked it, and then pulled a chair up to her bedside, resting in it and putting my face in my hands.

I gathered Bella's cold hands in my own colder ones and pressed my face into them. Her pulse was slow, and it would only get slower. I'd privately taken her off life-support when we'd gotten to the hospital, but she still had oxygen.

It was time to finish this: the only way to start over.

I carefully disconnected each monitor, and the oxygen last of all. I touched her neck carefully, feeling for the pulse until I found it. I pushed a hand through my hair before brushing hers off her forehead and kissing her forehead.

"I never wanted it this way, Child..." I murmured, "But we'll never leave you again. I love you... and I'm sorry..."

The clock stopped at 1:52, and Alice carefully sat up, awakened from the vision. Eleazar had been holding her, his brother's daughter, for the past two hours as she stayed frozen, watching something none of them could see.

Edward turned from the window he had been staring out of at the change of his sister's thoughts.

"Carlisle's finished it..." he said aloud for the benefit of his other siblings and the members of the Denali Clan.

Carlisle stayed by her bed, hearing the venom rush through her system. He stayed with her when the blood stopped flowing. He stayed with her when her brain healed, and her shoulder. He stayed with her when her face filled out, and her hair grew healthy again... and, 24 hours later, he stayed with her when her heart stopped.

Code blue was called, and Carlisle pronounced her dead at midnight the morning of April the fourteenth.

Her funeral was the very next day, when she was buried beside her paternal grandparents... but in reality, Bella was at the Cullen mansion. Carlisle rushed home right after the service was over and up to his room, loosening his tie as he stepped in and closed the door.

"She's waking up, I think..." Esme murmured, and Teresa let out a wail from her arms.

"Who? Bella, or the baby?"

Esme giggled and he sat down on the bed, taking Bella's hand from its limp position on the covers.

"We're the same temperature..." he murmured, and Esme smiled, "Bella, Sweetheart? Can you hear me?"

Her hand twitched, and then her eyes flickered open: blood red.
