That afternoon, Ron drove us to meet the rest of the team. He parked the car behind an u-haul truck disguised as food delivery. Ron exited first to let them turn off everything down.
I offered to help Karrin exit the car.
-"No!".
The harsh refusal caught me unawares.
She whispered.
-"I have to maintain an image of strength." She stood on her own with a bone-white grip on the walking stick. "It would help if you can grab their attention."
I extended my hand inside the car.
-"Shoes, c'mere." She glided over my arm and curled her form in my waist, looking the part of an expensive belt. Her face rested inside my sash.
I dipped my head and raised it again. This time, the world was behind a red-tinted glass.
-"After you."
Karrin's eyes widened and then she mastered herself. We approached the truck and knocked on the backdoor. When scurried inside, we had to avoid tripping on some jaws.
-"Hi KarrFUCKING CHRIST!" "HOOLEY!" "Gotta be shitting me" "Pranking the rookies, eh?"...
The last one was said by a younger fella, trying to look for a hidden camera.
Rawlins, who was hugging the everliving crap of Karrin, turned around and cuffed him in the back.
-"Don't be stupid."
Another young face, who couldn't be more than a few months outta the Police Academy, furrowed his brow.
-"If magic is real, can you make some?"
Great Tiger's response was to unleash his claws.
The Curious Rookie inched his face closer.
-"And this stuff... fries computers?"
The other, let's name him Not-So-Bright Rookie, strode forwards and pulled from my hand.
-"Don't be stupid. All of this is a prop to mess with us." He pulled but couldn't make the prop come off.
Great Tiger smiled, displaying some canines that would make orthodontists run to the hills.
Curious Rookie blanched while the Dullest Tool in the shed scoffed, scoffed I tell you.
-"Really? That is so gauche."
One of the older officers squinted.
-"Ron told us that you are a magic cop. Do you carry weapons?"
-"I am a weapon."
Ron dug a penny from his pocket and flipped it in the air. A slash later, two halves of the coin hit the floor of the truck.
Slow-In-The-Uptake Rookie collected both parts and tried to join them.
-"Trick coin. I saw Magicians Unveiled, this stuff slides over this …" After failing to disprove me, he crossed his arms. "What else? Are you going to charm a snake with a lute?"
Shoes left her resting place and climbed on top of Karrin. She scratched Shoes under the chin while our audience scampered to the far end of the truck.
