Jay turned onto their street and wiped his hand under his nose, "What the hell?" He slowed his car to a stop in front of the house and stared at all the cars in the driveway and in the street.
Hailey rubbed her eyes and shakily got out of the car. She grabbed her suitcase from the back and walked with Jay in the house.
Kim looked up from vacuuming the living room, "Hey." She turned off the vacuum and hurried over to hug Hailey, "How're you doing?"
"What's going on?" Hailey asked.
"We're going to help you guys out, okay?" Kim turned to Jay and hugged him as well, "We've got you."
Trudy came down the hall carrying a laundry basket of baby clothes, "Hey you two. I was going to sort these in the closet by age, sound okay?"
"Um," Hailey cleared her throat, "I…sure."
Trudy nodded and walked up to the nursery.
Kevin walked past her down the stairs, "Look who's here," he pulled Hailey against him, "Holding up okay?" he reached over and lightly punched Jay's arm, "Vanessa's parked herself in the hospital. She said Nicole's getting a c-section which sounds good, right? The doctors can make sure he gets here safely."
Jay nodded and took a deep breath, "Yeah, Will said things should go smoothly."
Kevin stepped back from Hailey, "All right, I'll be in the back if you need anything." He hugged Jay quickly then walked to the backyard.
Hailey and Jay slowly followed him, stepping around Kim now dusting the furniture, to see Adam mowing the lawn.
"What is happening?" Jay breathed.
Hank looked over from the stove, "Hey. How're you holding up? You two like pasta, right?"
Hailey breathed shakily, "You all don't have to do this."
They heard a loud noise in the back and looked through the window to see Kevin starting the weed whacker and following behind Adam along the fence.
"This is too much," Jay nodded.
"You two are our family and we step up for family," Hank said, "Nothing changes that."
"We can't," Hailey shook her head, "We can't accept all of this. We can do this."
"Some things aren't up for debate," Hank crossed his arms.
Hailey swallowed and walked around he counter to hug him, "Thank you."
Jay rubbed his face and looked around, making eye contact with Kim. He bit his lip and glanced away.
Kim sighed and set the dust rag down. She walked into the kitchen and said, "Let me tell you two something," she waited for Hailey and Jay to turn toward her, "When I lost my baby, you both made me meals and despite everything I said, you both checked in on me. Everyone did. I know you're overwhelmed, so let us take some of the stress off of you. Adam and I are going to take over Drew and getting him to and from school. Vanessa offered to go shopping for anything once she leaves the hospital. Adam and Kevin have finished putting up the curtains and said they'll babyproof everything. Trudy's doing laundry and said she'll help me clean. Hank's cooking today, but we'll all take turns. Let us help you."
Jay and Hailey stared at her, both in shock upon hearing what exactly everyone was willing to do for them.
Hailey set her hand on Jay's back, "I think we need this."
Jay weakly laughed and tilted his head up to the ceiling, "Wow."
Kim waited a beat before gently pushing his chest, "Go unpack and unwind."
"Thank you," Hailey said softly and took Jay's hand to lead him upstairs, stopping to grab their suitcases on the way. She shut the door to their bedroom and walked to the bed where she crawled on it and pulled the blanket over her head.
Jay couldn't help but laugh as he sat next to her. He set a hand on her back and breathed out, "What's going through your head?"
"I want to go back to sleep and pray that today was a dream," Hailey mumbled.
Jay nodded and laid next to her. He sighed and pressed his palms into his eyes.
Hailey blindly reached out from the blanket and grabbed his shirt.
Neither one of them was sure how much time had passed before Jay's phone rang. Hailey sprung up as Jay fumbled to answer the call.
"Hello?" he choked out without looking at the caller id.
"Jay," Grace said softly.
He sat up and turned his phone on speaker, "Yeah?"
"It's a boy."
Hailey laughed in disbelief and covered her mouth.
"Is he okay?" Jay asked.
"He's four pounds on the dot," Grace took a deep breath, "He's in the NICU right now. His lungs are not fully developed, so he's hooked up to a few machines to help him breathe."
Hailey leaned closer to the phone, "What about the drugs? Is he okay in that department?"
"They told me he's trembling which is expected, but that he's also gotten sick a few times and they've given him an IV to combat any possible dehydration," Grace said.
"Wait, wait," Jay shook his head, "He's on an IV? He's a baby."
"Babies can still have IVs," Hailey rubbed his arm, "I'm sure that's normal."
"Yes," Grace stated, sounding confident for the first time, "He is not the first baby in the world to be born addicted to drugs and unfortunately he won't be the last. He's in good hands here."
"And we really can't see him for three days?" Hailey bit her lip.
"I'm sorry," Grace said, "But no." Everyone was quiet for a minute and then Grace asked, "Are you related to a Will Halstead?"
Jay chuckled quietly, "Yeah, he's my brother."
There was a hint of a smile in Grace's voice when she said, "I thought I remembered that. He's been around. I think he's actually in the NICU now. Another girl is here, Vanessa, he's been telling her some information too."
"Of course," Hailey wiped her eyes.
"Before I go, I'd like you to know that Nicole is still very adamant that you raise him," Grace said.
Jay smiled slightly, "Thank you for letting us know."
"I'll call if there's anything else. I'll talk to you soon."
Jay slowly set the phone down on the bed and put his head in his hands.
Hailey blinked and played with her fingers. She tried picturing what he could look like. Nicole had curly black hair, similar to Drew's…maybe the boys would look alike. Who was she kidding though? Did he even have hair right now? She was pulled from her thoughts when she heard Jay sob once. Her head shot up and she stared at him.
His shoulders shook and he pushed himself off the bed to quickly lock himself in the bathroom.
"Jay," Hailey shakily followed him and tried the doorknob, "Jay, open the door." He didn't answer, which really didn't surprise her, and she knocked, "Jay, talk to me." She closed her eyes against her own tears, "Please." She heard him cry again and her heart started beating faster. Sometimes he teared up in front of her, but it really wasn't often. The last time she could even think of him crying was when Drew was in the hospital and that was nothing compared to this.
She hurried out of the room and down to the kitchen. She rummaged through the junk drawer, ignoring everyone staring at her.
"Hailey," Kim gently set a hand on her arm, "What's going on?"
"The baby – the baby was born," Hailey swallowed and found a screwdriver and a paper clip, "This opens a door, right?"
"Wait, stop," Adam noticed her shaking and stood on her other side, "Hey, look at us, Hailey."
Hailey looked up at him and blinked quickly. Her lip wavered as she took a deep breath.
"Talk to us," Adam said.
Hailey closed her eyes, "Jay…Jay's in the bathroom and he won't come out. The b-baby's little and a-addicted like we thought," she shakily wiped her eyes, "I-I don't know what to do."
Kevin reached around Adam and took the screwdriver from her hand, "The upstairs bathroom?"
Hailey nodded and swallowed.
"That'd be a hex wrench," Hank said.
"Yeah," Kevin breathed out and looked through the drawer. He found one and set a hand on Hailey's arm before walking upstairs with her. He knocked on the bathroom door, "Jay, it's Kevin. Hailey's pretty worried about you, so I'm gonna unlock the door unless you can do it yourself."
There wasn't any movement or sound from inside, so Kevin placed the small wrench in the hole and quickly unlocked it.
"Thank you," Hailey whispered and slipped inside the bathroom. "Jay," she slowly walked toward him and lowered herself to the floor where he was sitting against the wall with his head in his knees.
"Sorry," he mumbled and looked up, "I…I don't know. I'm not okay with him being there in a little bed with tubes in him and machines keeping him alive while we sit here not able to do anything."
Hailey nodded and hugged him tightly. She held his head to her chest, pressing her lips to the top of her head. She blinked against the tears that started to fall down her own face.
"I am terrified, Hailey," Jay said.
She chewed her lip and ran her fingers through his hair, "I am too."
Jay winced and sat up further, "I'm sorry, I should be comforting you," he sniffled and set a hand on the side of her face.
Hailey shook her head before hugging him again, "Don't even start with that. We'll always be p-partners and part of being partners means that we-we support each other no matter what."
Jay breathed shakily and nodded, "Okay."
Hailey didn't let go of him until she was confident he had calmed down enough to stand on his own. She eventually felt his body relax and carefully stood, offering him a hand.
He weakly smiled and took it, standing with her then walking them both to the bed. They sat looking at each other, neither quite sure what to say or even do.
Hailey wiped her eyes and crawled across the mattress to grab the remote. She laid on her pillow as she turned on the TV, quickly navigating the guide until she found The Office.
Jay laid next to her, wrapping his arm around her to hold her against his side.
Hailey rested her head on his shoulder and held his hand.
He kissed the top of her hair and rubbed circles on her hand with his thumb.
"Okay, thanks," Kim set her phone on the counter and sighed, "Will's worried. He said the baby's small and sickly looking."
"Dammit," Adam whispered.
"Hey," Kevin lightly clapped his hands together as he walked in the room, "They're really not okay."
Trudy nodded, "Burgess just talked to Will."
"And?" Kevin asked, sitting at the kitchen table.
"Four pounds and full-service in the NICU," Kim said quietly.
Kevin shook his head, "It's a shame."
"I'm worried about them," Hank looked around the kitchen.
"They're never really okay with accepting help," Adam sighed.
"It's up to us to change that then," Trudy shrugged.
Kim glanced to her phone, "I'll go get Cara and Drew from school."
"What're you gonna tell him?" Adam asked, "He's expecting Will."
"I'll figure it out when I get there," Kim breathed and picked up her keys, "See you in a bit."
Drew walked out of school with a bounce in his step as he made his way to the bench near the kindergarten playground. His eyebrows scrunched up when he noticed that Uncle Will wasn't there. Instead, Ms. Kim was sitting with Cara in her lap looking around.
He walked over to her, "Where's Uncle Will?"
Ms. Kim slipped Cara off her lap and stood, "He had to stay at the hospital, so I'm going to take you home, sound good?"
"Is everything okay?" Drew asked.
Ms. Kim held her hand out, "Let's walk to my car."
Drew slowly shook his head, "What's wrong?"
"Drew, let's head to your house," Ms. Kim said.
Cara grabbed Ms. Kim's other hand, "Maybe we can have a play date."
"Why won't you tell me if everything's okay?" Drew rubbed his arm.
Cara pulled Ms. Kim, "He's going to scratch."
"Okay," Ms. Kim breathed and gently turned Drew around. She opened his backpack, "Don't your mom and dad have a fidget cube for you in here?"
"The big pocket in the front," Drew sniffled, "What's going on?"
"Found it," Ms. Kim zipped his backpack up and passed him the cube, "Can you come with us now?"
"Please," Cara reached out to pat his arm.
"I don't know what's happening," Drew said.
"You will find out soon, okay? We have to go to your house," Ms. Kim gently took his hand, "Can I do this? Can I touch you?"
Drew shrugged and dragged his feet as they walked to her car.
During the car ride, Cara rambled about her day, but Drew stayed quiet and stared out the window. He knew something was going to go wrong. Nothing ever goes right. Mom and Dad probably did get eaten by a bear.
Ms. Kim parked the car in the street outside his house and that's when Drew knew something was really wrong. Mom's car was in the driveway which was really bad because that's the car she was supposed to take with Dad to Wisconsin.
Ms. Kim took a deep breath and got out of the car. She opened the back door for Cara to run out. She leaned into the car, "Drew, we're home."
Drew looked at her, "That's my mom's car."
"I know," Ms. Kim sighed, "Once you're inside, you'll find out why."
"I hate secrets," Drew groaned and got out of the car. He reluctantly walked in the house knowing he was going to find something bad on the other side of the door.
The bedroom door cracked open slowly and Jay looked over to see Drew stick his head in. He breathed out and sat up, "Hey, bud."
Hailey poked her head up, "Hi, honey."
"What's going on?" Drew asked quietly.
Jay put his hand out, "Come here. Mom and I need to talk to you."
"There's a lot of people downstairs," Drew said as he walked over, "Shouldn't they be working?"
Hailey laughed softly and moved to sit up against the pillows, "They took today off to hang out with us."
"Why?" Drew asked while Jay lifted him onto the bed.
Jay rubbed his face once setting Drew between him and Hailey, "The baby was born today."
Drew's eyes lit up, "Where is he?" He quickly moved to get off the bed, but Jay grabbed his waist, "Dad," he sighed, "No. I want to go see Buzz."
"Buzz isn't here," Jay said softly.
"Oh," Drew chewed his lip, "Well, can you take me to him?"
Hailey shook her head, "Not right now."
"I-I…I want him, really, I do," Drew quickly looked between the two of them, "I promise to be the best brother. I swear."
"I know you will be," Jay nodded, "But we can't see him for a few days."
"Why?" Drew sighed, "Why won't anyone answer any of my questions?"
Hailey set a hand on his back and cleared her throat, "Drew, the baby-"
"Buzz," he interrupted her.
"Buzz," Hailey smiled slightly, "Is very sick right now, so we can't see him."
Drew blinked a few times and looked at Jay, "Why can't we see Buzz?"
"Drew, she's telling the truth," Jay said, "Buzz is sick right now."
"But when I'm sick, you saw me," Drew shook his head, "You're not – you're lying to me."
"We're not," Hailey rubbed his back, "Honey, Buzz was born too early, he wasn't fully grown and ready for the world."
"I'm not fully grown!" Drew pulled away from her, "I'm only seven and I'm in the world!"
"Listen to us," Jay scooted closer to him, "Babies grow in moms, right?"
"Not my mom," Drew said.
Hailey blushed, "You have to make a baby first and then it grows in moms. Dad and I haven't made a baby yet."
"Oh," Drew slowly nodded, "So how-"
"Not today," Jay squeezed Drew's knee, "Let's keep talking about Buzz."
"Fine," Drew sighed.
"So," Jay continued, "Step one, make the baby. Step two, grow the baby in the mom," he pointed to Hailey, "Step three, it grows for nine months. Step four, it's born."
Drew thought for a moment then nodded again, "Okay."
"What happened was Buzz didn't grow for all nine months," Hailey said, "That's why he's sick. He was born five weeks earlier than he was supposed to be."
"So that's not good?" Drew shook his head.
"No," Jay said.
Drew bit his lip, "How do we fix him?"
"The doctors are fixing him," Hailey said softly, "He's going to have to stay at the hospital for a while."
Drew's eyes widened, "Is Uncle Will fixing him? Is that why Uncle Will didn't pick me up from school?"
"Uncle Will's checking on him," Jay nodded and reached for his phone, "He actually sent us-"
Hailey hit his arm and shook her head.
Jay swallowed and put his hand back in his lap.
"Sent you what?" Drew asked.
"Just some texts," Jay shrugged, "He's been texting me about the baby."
"I would hope he would," Drew said, "That's our baby. Someone needs to look at him."
Hailey laughed softly and nodded, "You are very right. We know that all the doctors are helping him the best they can."
"I cannot wait to see him," Drew whispered.
Jay smiled and got off the bed, "Hey, let's go grab a snack, you're probably hungry."
"Yeah," Drew stood up, "Mom, are you coming?"
"I'm gonna stay here for a little bit," Hailey said, "But maybe you could bring me a cookie?"
"I can do that," Drew walked out.
"You okay?" Jay asked softly.
Hailey nodded and squeezed his hand, "I'm okay. I actually feel better after talking to him. He knows something's off, but he's still positive about it."
Jay smiled and kissed her forehead, "He helped us see the bigger picture."
"Yeah," Hailey breathed.
Jay stepped backwards, "I'll go get that cookie and then we can continue this whole cuddling thing because that was perfect."
Hailey laughed, "Sounds good."
Jay winked at her then followed Drew downstairs.
Hailey breathed out and reached for Jay's phone. She opened up his messages from Will and tapped the photos.
The baby was small and almost didn't look real with all the wires and tubes connected to him. Will said it was normal, but the truth was it was terrifying. Both her and Jay had cried again from looking at it. As "normal" as this was, they didn't want to see their baby in any pain. Their baby.
A/N: Hey! How're you all doing? :) This one was tough to write. I know it's not my absolute best, but I was struggling at the beginning, so I hope it still turned out okay in the end. Please let me know what you think, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you for everything!
